1.1 Dhankuta Regional Museum

The objectives of the case study of Dhankuta Regional Museum are to know about the use of space, lighting system, circulation, access, display techniques, etc. are analyzed.

1.1.1 Introduction

Dhankuta regional museum is one of the most beautiful planned museums which display and store the tools and technologyof different ethnic group of this region. They are Tharu, Rajbanshi, Satar, Rai, Sherpa, etc.

1.1.3 Topography

Dhankuta is situated in hilly region so the topography of land is sloppy nature. The museum is located in sloppy site towards north to south.

1.1.4 Zoning

The regional museum of Dhankuta has a welcoming plaza after entered from main gate of width 10’. In plaza different flowers and plants are planted and give access to visitors with this plaza. In the figure below it shows the diagram of different space inside this museum.

1.1.5 Museum Plan and Circulation

Regional museum of Dhankuta has a sloppysite so the plan of museum is playing level with rectangular form. The space created in museum is gradually change according to site level difference. The designing of change in level to create space is beautiful and also wooden showcase are placed so that it helps to guide in circulation. Both staircase and ramp are used in museum block A but ramp are not according to guidelines it can bemadeaccordingtospaceavailable.Staircasehasriserof7”butinstaircase,showcase and ramp are designed. It creates problem in circulation.

The timber showcase which also provide direction of circulation. In this block A the interior is done more effectively. Circulation is continuously which didn’t disturb visitors to return this space again. Display of different ethnic group tools, equipment, cultural activity is in systematic way.

Lighting in Block A

Roof of block A is slope and provide window in roof to access of light inside the museum. Ground floor have no proper natural light and provide artificial light. In upper floor natural light plays more effectively. And also, the wall inside the museum was painted with white color and wall reflects light also. False ceiling is used to give aesthetic look inside the room.

Plan and circulation space of block B

The plan of a block B is looking like rectilinear. Showcase inside the block creates circulation space. In block B circulation space is not continue. Once entered through

this space visitors again return from this space. So that visitors feel crowed moment while return. All elements related to different ethnic group are display in systematic

way and also place name plate of each ethnic group objects.

Natural lighting source in block B is through window placed in different place in wall. Natural light is not enough in this block also. Artificial lightingis used but not in proper way. Random use of artificial light.

1.1.6 Materials

The materials used in the building of the slope roof consisted of brick, concrete, timber, glass panels, etc. Inside roof timber is used in false ceiling. Roof is of zinc. Floor is of concrete.

1.1.7 Inference

 Separate room for exhibition and administration block

 Circulation for staff and visitors are same

 Continuous flow of circulation is blocked so it creates visitors to feel crowed moment while return again

 Use of land according to topography

 Lighting system is good but not sufficient

 Welcoming plaza is very attractive

 Outer look of museum is not attractive but inner planning is attractive

 Ramp is not properly managed

 Artificial light is used random in museum

 Gather more objects of different ethnic group and display effectively

 Museum is managed well with sufficient space of parking outside museum

 Museum is near government office area
