The City of Kettering Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department is pleased to offer a signing interpreter for hearing-impaired patrons who want to take a class at Rosewood Arts Centre or the Kettering Recreation Complex.

Please give us three weeks’ notice to schedule the interpreter and call (937) 296-0294.

MEETING SPACE & ROOM RENTAL Rosewood Arts Centre provides a pleasant, creative and comfortable atmosphere for group or individual needs for meeting space. Meeting rooms include requested table and chair arrangements, as well as large slide or projector screens.

All rooms are equipped with cloak and sink areas. Parking is free, convenient and safe. Applications for meeting space are accepted continuously for daily and quarterly rentals. If your organization or group has been searching for an affordable meeting place, call (937) 296-0294.

CLASS CANCELLATION Rosewood Arts Centre reserves the right to cancel any class and to substitute faculty when necessary. Classes will be canceled three working days prior to the starting date when there is insufficient enrollment.

OPEN STUDIOS Open studio sessions are designed to allow artists and craftspeople the opportunity to work on their own in a creative environment with the necessary equipment perhaps not available to them at home. The studios are open for independent work Monday through Saturday. Hours are determined by class schedule. Call (937) 296-0294.

VISITOR POLICY: All participants and observers must pay open studio fees to stay longer than 15 minutes. Children under five years old are not permitted in open studio. Those under 16 must be supervised by an adult 21 years of age or older (no more than two children per adult). All studio patrons, including currently enrolled students, should sign in and pay fees at the Rosewood office. All open studio work-in-progress may not be left more than 30 minutes unattended.

STUDENT POLICY: Students currently enrolled in classes will receive a student pass card. This card is used for studio time needed to develop skill and complete projects. Students staying over 30 minutes after the class period must sign in and use this pass card.

OPEN STUDIO FEES: Pottery – Sculpture – Painting – Enameling – Glass – Dance Drop-in fee per visit: $4/resident; $8/non-resident; Discount card (10 visits): $30/resident; $60/non-resident Supplies are not included in open studio fees.

LOCKER RENTAL: Lockers are available for rental on a pre-pay six-month or yearly basis.

Six-month: $20/resident; $25/non-resident. Yearly: $35/resident; $45/non-resident.

POTTERY STUDIO: Clay fee of $19 includes 25 pounds of clay and related firing and glazes. Only clay purchased at Rosewood may be used in our studios and firings. Clay purchased at Rosewood may not be removed from the facility for work at home.

You must supply your own tools. The studio is designed as a community facility and, as such, is not equipped to accommodate production pottery quantities. All open studio and private studio users are limited to three (3) cubic feet per week of kiln use. Unclaimed pieces left after 30 days will be discarded. Attendance at a free pottery studio orientation is required of all first-time participants. Please call (937) 296-0294 with your name and phone number.

DARKROOM: The darkroom is available for use by individuals during regular Rosewood Arts Centre hours, except when classes are scheduled. A notice is posted announcing class dates and times. Participants must be at least 16 years old, demonstrate previous experience in black and white darkroom processes, and attend a Rosewood orientation and familiarization session.

Check at the Rosewood office for more information on eligibility or for the orientation schedule and to make an appointment.

Darkroom fee per visit: $5/resident; $10/non-resident; Discount card (10 visits): $35/resident; $70/non-resident Reminder: Discount cards must be processed by the individual holder.

Discount cards are for individual use only and not to be shared among friends or family.

KETTERING ARTS COUNCIL Rosewood Arts Centre enriches the quality of life for the residents of Kettering and the greater Dayton area by providing creative experiences through the arts.

The Kettering Arts Council is a volunteer advisory board that Kettering residents created to assist the Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department with the development, awareness and promotion of the arts in Kettering. The Kettering Arts Council meets every third Tuesday of the month from 4:30 to 6 p.m. at Rosewood Arts Centre.

PRESCHOOL DANCE DANCE APPAREL Dance classes, such as ballet and tap, are conducted in the Rosewood Arts Centre dance studio. Street shoes are not allowed on the dance studio floor. Slippers or socks with treads are safer than socks. Tap shoes or hard-soled shoes are required for tap. Dance shoes are available at many local retailers and local dance apparel stores.

Leotards and tights are optional as well. Wear comfortable clothing that will allow you to move easily. Only the spring session includes a dance review.

Stretch and Point Age(s) 3 - 6 This is an introduction to coordination and movement. Ballet, jazz and tumbling are combined for boys and girls, 3 to 6 years of age. Monday and Tuesday at 10 a.m. are designed especially for beginners who are 3 years old. *Class will not meet on Nov. 19 and 20.

This unique program nurtures each child's total development by promoting language development, symbolic thinking, coordination and social interaction while awakening the child's imagination.

The Kettering Children’s Choir The Kettering Children’s Choir has established a local and national reputation of choral excellence. It was founded in 1986 and now includes over 200 singers from 30 communities within nine Miami Valley counties. The auditioned choirs are for ages 8 through 18. The Choraleers, Chorus, Chorale, and Concert Choir sing music of all periods and types, from Renaissance to contemporary, and rehearse weekly at Rosewood Arts Centre. The Cappella, a regional high school honors choir, is a college prep program in residence at Wright State University.

The Concert Choir and the Cappella tour nationally and internationally. HOMESCHOOL ARTS PROGRAM Rosewood Homeschool Arts Program exists to provide quality art instruction to homeschool students. These classes are designed to teach children skills that may be difficult to learn solely at home, as well as to complement what is taught at home. All of the Homeschool Arts classes are taught by an experienced teacher.

Drawing Animé Age(s) 12 - 14 This class will introduce students to the art of the Japanese illustration style Manga, or Animé, as seen in popular cartoons Dragonball Z and Pokemon. Students will learn simple Japanese style cartooning and backgrounds and touch on the basics of line, proportion, color and layout.

Painting with a Pro Age(s) 13 - 18 Teens interested in exploring their creativity through the medium of acrylic paint are led through the process with one-on-one guidance in this threepart series of painting workshops. The instructor, an exhibiting artist, works alongside participants to demonstrate use of color, technique, application and development of personal style. Each session focuses on a specific subject. Students may sign up for one, two or all three sessions. This is a great opportunity for college-minded students who wish to begin building portfolio content.

Splish, Splash, Color Bash Age(s) 7 - 13 Come use your artistic skills and make colorful, dimensional projects! We will be using a variety of materials on each of our projects, ranging from colored pencils, markers and pastels to paint and food coloring. Each project will be new and exciting and teach you a little about simple color theory.

We will learn about complimentary colors and explore what colors work well together and what colors do not. This class is a sure guarantee for fun while learning at the same time.

Age(s) 9 - 14 This class provides instruction in the basic theatre skills of pantomime, movement, voice and diction, improvisation, script work, audition techniques (including selection and preparation of individual audition pieces) and performing a monologue. This is a prerequisite for the Kettering Children’s Theatre Workshop and Advanced Theatre Instruction.

Clay Creatures

Advanced Theatre Instruction Age(s) 9 - 14 This course builds on the skills gained in Basic Theatre Instruction. We will focus on proper breathing techniques, voice projection, speech and diction exercises, audition techniques (including selection and preparation of individual audition pieces), developing a character, and performing a short play. The final play will be performed before an audience.

Enrollment is limited to 12 to allow for the depth of work required. Prerequisite: Basic Theatre Instruction. This is a prerequisite for the Kettering Children's Theatre Workshop.

Kettering Children’s Theatre Grades 5 to 9 or a minimum of 10 years old The Kettering Children’s Theatre Production is a nonauditioned youth theatre program for elementary through junior high students. The theatre program produces two plays per year. Prerequisites to this production are the Basic Theatre Instruction and Advanced Theatre Instruction classes at Rosewood Arts Centre.

Students are required to make a commitment to three rehearsal sessions per week. Parent participation is welcomed.

Registration deadline for the fall production is Friday, August 31, 2012. Registration forms must be received at Rosewood Arts Centre by 5 p.m.

Fall production dates are November 9, 10, 11 and 16, 17, 18.

Cutting Edge Pumpkin Carving Rosewood Participants All artwork unclaimed after several weeks runs the danger of being lost, misplaced, broken or mistakenly taken by other students. Artwork unclaimed after 30 days will be discarded.

Age(s) 10+ This workshop is an introduction to unconventional pumpkin carving techniques. Children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Pumpkins and carving tools will be provided.

Beavertown Cemetery 3170 Valleywood Drive This October, explore the remarkable history of the Beavertown Cemetery, an active cemetery in east Kettering.

The tour will explore the symbolism on several gravestones, as well as recognize the historic contributions of those laid to rest over a century ago. Feel free to bring sketchbooks or cameras to capture some of the artistic merit of this landscape.

This October, Rosewood Arts Centre is partnering with Project Paranormal Investigations to explore paranormal activity at Kettering’s historic Polen Farm. Perspective Drawing Age(s) 16+ Enhance your artwork with the not-so-secret techniques of perspective drawing. Even though it may initially require a little effort in understanding and practice, perspective helps you achieve greater freedom and ease in realistic drawing and painting. Intro to Glass: Blast, Cast and Smash!

Age(s) 18+ Intro to Glass: Blast, Cast and Smash will explore some of the unique qualities of glass. In this class, we will explore the basics of sand blasting, sand casting, and pressing glass.

This class can accommodate a wide range of skill levels. One session of this class will be conducted at Glass by James Michael. His studio is located at 545 W. Siebenthaler, Dayton, Ohio.

Session A - Blast: Decorate the glass object of your choice with basic sand blasting. Learn the basics of masking and sand blasting glass.

Bring a glass bottle, xacto knife with blades, and masking tape.

All other materials will be provided.

Session B - Cast: Create a glass casting using the agent technique of sand casting.

Make your own glass mold using basic materials. Bring a shoebox and wear old clothes. All other materials will be provided.

Session C - Smash: Learn the basics of pressing glass. Design considerations, materials, temperatures and pressures will all be discussed before you create your own press die. All materials will be provided.

Glass Ornaments (Icicle Style) Age(s) 16+ Use preformed glass tubes to create Christmas ornaments or sun catchers. These particular preforms are more oblong than round. No experience is required but a beginning glass bead making class would be helpful. Please be aware that we are using gas-fired torches. Wear jeans, closed-toed shoes and no fleece. For a longer lasting keepsake, the ornaments will be kiln annealed, then trimmed and capped. Interior decorations will be demonstrated to embellish your ornament. Limited to six people per course. DANCE APPAREL Dance classes, such as ballet and tap, are conducted in the Rosewood Arts Centre dance studio. Street shoes are not allowed on the dance studio floor. Slippers or socks with treads are safer than socks. Tap shoes or hard-soled shoes are required for tap. Dance shoes are available at many local retailers and local dance apparel stores.

Leotards and tights are optional as well. Wear comfortable clothing that will allow you to move easily. Only the spring session includes a dance review.

Ballroom Dance classes are held at the Charles I. Lathrem Senior Center. Leather-soled shoes are best for these classes.

Beginning Belly Dancing Age(s) 16+ Belly dancing, a feminine tradition, has an ancient history.

It was started in the Middle East as a series of motions to strengthen the pelvic and abdominal muscles in preparation for childbirth. In ancient Egypt and Turkey, only the best dancers would gain the attention of the sultan. Our class will consist of basic belly dance folk steps and cabaret-style dance moves, along with floor exercises and the use of veils. Stretching and AB work at the end of class. *Class will not meet on Nov. 22.

ADULT/TEEN MUSIC Kettering Civic Band Age(s) 18+ Celebrating their 53rd year, the Kettering Civic Band has performed throughout the region and Canada as well as in sister cities, Steyr, Austria and Kettering, England. The band rehearses each Monday evening at the Kettering Middle School throughout the year. Holiday concerts are on the schedule for the month of December. The program is for adults and young people who have a minimum amount of high school musical training. The organization is an excellent source for those who wish to gain concert band experience.

Creative Writing for Publishing II Age(s) 16+ This course explains how to analyze your story concept and implement the appropriate steps to produce a Book Proposal to submit to potential publishers in a timely fashion and without much stress. The course deals with writing tasks such as a story synopsis, character thumbnails and cover letters. The course also looks at the publishing industry and examines how editors judge submissions. FALL 2012 FACULTY LIST Toni Adams has an Associate’s Degree in Visual Communications from Sinclair Community College and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Art Education from the University of Dayton. She is also a practicing artist who has had multiple paintings in juried art shows.

Dale Archer co-owns Gemini Dance Studio.

Linda Ashley is an experienced competition and exhibition dancer.

Jean Ann Bolliger is a recent Bachelor of Fine Arts graduate from Miami University. Her clay forms range from functional vessel to ceramic sculpture.

Nancy Lynn Boss has been teaching various dance styles for 29 years—17 of those years have been at Rosewood Arts Centre. She has studied dance with Jorg Fastings from the Columbus Ballet Company and Ballet Arts in New York City.

Dale Boydston studied fine art with an emphasis on ceramic arts at the College of the Dayton Art Institute and Sinclair Community College. He is currently devoting his time to studio ceramic design, art photography and teaching.

David Brand has taught metal casting/construction for more than 25 years, continually honing his skills through personal research and participation in classes and workshops with widely known metal artists. He exhibits nationally in juried shows.

Jane Brennan holds a Bachelor of Arts in Art Education from the University of Dayton. She has taught in a variety of settings and has experience in many art media.

Rebekah Bucnis holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography from the University of Dayton and teaches at Stivers School for the Arts. She has been working in photography since 2003.

Teresa Connair earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Wright State University. She has experience in film, theater and radio and television commercials. Her directing includes Oakwood Community Center Youth Summer Theatre and Washington Township Youth Theatre as well as Rosewood Arts Centre.

Greg Dearth graduated from Ohio University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree. He is a member of the Portrait Society of America and has been a guest lecturer and instructor at the Columbus College of Art and Design and Atlanta’s Portfolio Center. His work has been included in many of the juried Society of Illustrators’ annual shows, Communication Arts, American Illustration and Print magazines.

Sammie Sue Edmondson has studied dance since she was seven years old. She studied in New York City and at Sinclair Community College.

Shannon Fent has been Kettering Children’s Theatre’s director for the past seven years and 14 productions. She has an Associate’s degree from Sinclair Community College in Theatre Production.

Pearl Grefer is an experienced dance instructor who has won the “National Top Teacher Award.”

Gary Halsey attended the Art Students League of New York in painting under D. Greene and anatomy under R. B. Hale and has a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Cincinnati. He worked in his own business as a book cover illustrator and mural painter in New York City for over 20 years.

Sara Jankowski is from Cleveland, Ohio. She studied fine arts and art therapy at Ohio University. She received her Masters Degree from Lesley College in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Sara works as an art teacher and art therapist in the Cincinnati/Dayton area.

Trish Jeffers-Zeh is a Certified PMC (Precious Metal Clay) and Senior Instructor of Silver Art Clay. She works as a freelance artist with a background in sculpture, metals, glass fusing, lapidary and mixed media.

J. Austin Jennings has been teaching art in the Dayton area since 1994. Her acrylic paintings and collage pieces are shown and collected across the country and have earned many awards, including a featured spot in The Artist’s Magazine’s Year’s Best Art issue in December 2009. She is the recipient of the 2012 Pamela Houk Award for Excellence in Art Education in Southwest Ohio. Jennings is a member of Dayton Visual Arts Center, Dayton Society of Painters and Sculptors, and Arts & Culture Alliance, Knoxville, Tennessee.

Georgia Johnson is a Third Degree Master of the Ohara School and a teacher in the Ohara School of Japanese Flower Arranging-Ikabana. She is a member of the Ikabana International Dayton Chapter and has taught Ikabana for 20 years.

Breck Jordan has been an interpreter for the deaf for almost ten years. She is a 2001 graduate of the Manual Communication program at Sinclair Community College.

Currently, she works full time interpreting for Kettering City Schools.

James Michael Kahle produces glass art forms in a contemporary style. He has been blowing glass since 1990.

James Michael has been awarded grants funded through the Ohio Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts. His work has been shown in numerous exhibits in the United States and abroad.

David Keener taught in the public schools for 37 years, during which his vocal and instrumental groups frequently received District and State Ohio Music Education Association (OMEA) Superior ratings.

Tom Kinarney is a former professional artist who has done freelance illustration for numerous companies, locally and throughout the country. He has taught art for the last ten years at Riverbend Art Center and at the Fairborn Art Association.

H. David Kirchner has a degree in art from Cedarville College. He also studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. David operates the H. David Studio/Gallery in downtown Dayton. He has worked in clay since 1984.

Donna Kuszpa has studied wirewrapping with John Kleber in Columbus. She has taught wirewrapping since 1993 at Riverbend Art Centre.

FALL 2012 FACULTY LIST (Continued) April Lemaster has been studying ceramics for over seven years. She has trained with David Kirchner, Vicki Cassidy and Lynn Zoll.

Joann Lieswyn has a degree from Morehead State University and has been studying ceramics for many years. Her first clay instructor, Skizuko Alexander, was from Japan. Since then, Japanese-styled ceramics have influenced her artwork.

Tony Lupia is a published author and has been involved with the publishing industry for almost 25 years. His expertise covers a wide range of writing, including creative, business and technical.

Victoria Manship has a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Painting from Ohio University. She was an officer in the university’s Japanese Culture club, which focused heavily on animÊ and manga. She has assisted with several child and youth programs in the region.

Sara Mastbaum earned her Master of Arts in Art History and Museum Studies from the University of Cincinnati, where she focused on Museum Education. She has served as an intern with the education departments of the Contemporary Arts Center and the Dayton Art Institute.

Currently, she works as an elementary school substitute in the Centerville City School District and as a freelance writer.

Sara was recently named a 2012-2013 Fulbright finalist in Creative and Performing Arts.

Pat Westby added beadmaking to her repertoire of art skills in 2001. She has taken classes at Miami University and participated in the International Society of Glass Beadmakers Conference. A member of the Miami Valley Lampwork Bead Artists, she has been invited to teach and demonstrate at Thompson Enamel and Fenton Art Glass Factory.

Leonard Williams has been working with watercolors for over 15 years. He has also worked extensively with oils and created large-scale images such as the mural behind the Town and Country Centre.

Sharon Williams earned a Bachelor of Art in Social Work and Psychology from Thomas More College and has been working in ceramics for over a decade.

Georgeanna Wright has a Bachelors Degree in Media Arts and Design and a Masters in Educational Leadership.

She currently teaches Introductory Art and Digital Art at Centerville High School.

Roland Muncy is a self-employed caricature artist. His work has been seen throughout the Dayton area.

Rosalba Nickelman is originally from Bologna, Italy. She received her Bachelors of Arts and a Masters of Education from Wright State University. She currently teaches Italian and Spanish at Wright State and Sinclair Community College.

Davilyn Parker has five years experience in stained glass and works for Renaissance Glass Studio in Kettering.

Sandra Picciano-Brand has maintained a studio in Dayton for over 25 years. Her work is in private collections and galleries nationally. She has exhibited at national level juried art shows and won numerous awards. She has studied at Penland, Arrowmont and Craft Summer Institutes.

Loretta Puncer received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Commercial Design from the University of Dayton. She has been a practicing artist/painter for over 25 years.

Full payment for classes must be made at the time of registration. Resident fees are for those participants who either live or work within the Kettering city limits. Program fees for non-Kettering residents will be an additional 25 percent or $5, whichever is greater (not to exceed $10). Fees will be refunded if a class is full.
