rosewood arts centre Rosewood Arts Centre is dedicated to enriching the quality of life for the residents of Kettering and the greater Dayton area by providing creative experiences through the arts. Rosewood presents over 400 classes annually for youth and adults, as well as gallery exhibitions, theater performances, artist studios and special events. A division of the City of Kettering’s Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts, Rosewood is supported and programmed by the City of Kettering, with additional support provided by the Ohio Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Dayton Metro Library at Rosewood Arts Centre

Th ro u g h o u t 2 0 1 8 , t h e Wilmington-Stroop branch of the Dayton Metro Library will be relocating programs to Rosewood Arts Centre while their facility is under construc tion.

These programs include storytime, home school, teen, and book club! Details can be found at www.playkettering.org/rosewood.

New in 2018, Rosewood is open extended hours on Saturdays and open on Sundays during the school year. Drop-in studio will be open for ceramics, dance, painting, drawing, glass, jewelry, theatre, dance, and the darkroom. Sunday classes will also be offered; please check the activity listings for more information!

Yoga in the Gallery Ages: 16+

Join us at Rosewood Gallery for an open level yoga class with Robyn Moore, RYT 200. This class is of a gentler nature, often focusing on shoulders, hips, and low back, with the breath being the center of the practice. Class is open to all levels of yoga practitioners. Kids Sewing Basics

Ages: 5 – 10

Ages: 8 – 14

Parents and children get creative while creating clay masks and/or rad zendoodle decorated pottery. Class fee provides each student with clay, glazes and related firings. Registration pays for one child and one adult.

Jesy from Needle, Ink and Thread loves to help kids start sewing; let her inspire them to create! This 4-week class will do just that! Students make a pin cushion to learn sewing machine basics, seam allowance, changing a needle, filling a bobbin, threading and cleaning the machine, all in the first class. The following 3 weeks focus on building skills while making a pillowcase with french seams, drawstring bag with casing, and an appliqueed pillow. These projects will excite and inspire them to keep sewing! $25 dollar materials fee due to the instructor at first class.

Parent and Child Mosaic Ages: 5 – 10

Plan a fun play date with your favorite kiddo and explore the art of mosaic! In this family-friendly class, adults and kids will collaborate to create a colorful 10 inch x 10 inch mosaic on a wooden wall panel from glass, mirrors, beads, glass globs and much more! All materials are pre-cut and each adult/child team is provided with a mosaic tool to fine tune tesserae (pieces in a mosaic). There will be a grouting demo and each student will go home with a bag of premixed grout and gloves to grout at home. All materials included. Class fee pays for 1 adult + 1 child.

YOUTH THEATRE Basic Theatre Instruction Ages: 9 – 15

This class provides instruction in the basic theatre skills of pantomime, movement, voice and diction, improvisation, script work, audition techniques and performing a monologue. This is a prerequisite for the Kettering Children’s Theatre and Advanced Theatre Instruction.

Kettering Children’s Theatre Ages: 9 – 15

The Kettering Children’s Theatre Production is a youth theatre program for elementary through junior high students. The theatre program produces two plays per year. Prerequisites to this production are the Basic Theatre Instruction and/or Advanced Theatre Instruction classes at Rosewood Arts Centre or by permission of the instructor.

If you have previous theatre experience but have not taken either class at Rosewood, you may perform a monologue at auditions.

The monologue must be memorized. Monologues will be available in the Rosewood Arts Centre front office. All potential participants are encouraged to take at least one acting class or a summer camp.

Students are required to make a commitment to three rehearsal sessions per week. Parent participation is strongly encouraged. A mandatory parent meeting is scheduled for September 4 from 5 to 6 p.m. Registration deadline for the fall production is September 4. Open auditions will be held on Saturday, August 25 at 11 a.m.

Fall production dates are November 9, 10, 11 and 16, 17, and 18.

Advanced Theatre Instruction Ages: 9 – 15

This course builds on the skills gained in Basic Theatre Instruction. We will focus on proper breathing techniques, voice projection, speech and diction exercises, audition techniques (including selection and preparation of individual audition pieces), developing a character, and performing a short play. The final play will be performed before an audience. Enrollment is limited to 12 to allow for the depth of work required. Prerequisite: Basic Theatre Instruction. This is a prerequisite for the Kettering Children’s Theatre.

YOUTH EDUCATOR SPOTLIGHT Meet Youth Drawing Instructor Adam Fields Adam Fields is the owner and lead creative force behind Midnight27 Studios and the creator of the hit comic book series, PROWL. Raised in Eaton, Ohio, he has always had a passion for art and storytelling.

His professional portfolio is very diverse with projects that range from designing concept art for book covers, business cards, logos, full comic books and officially licensed sketch cards for Upper Deck and Marvel.

Adam currently teaches Drawing FUNdamentals and Cartooning for Kids.

ADULT / TEEN CERAMICS Reduction Firing

Get unique and beautiful glaze results using our reduction kiln and cone 10 specific glazes. Patrons may use up to 3 cubic feet of space per firing included in the cost of class or open studio use. Cost of additional space needed in a single firing is $20 per cubic ft. Firings are scheduled when enough work is generated to fill the kiln (generally once a month). Anyone interested in firing work in the reduction kiln may sign up for an individual orientation in the Rosewood office.

Raku Firing Come participate in an exciting alternative firing technique!

Bring 2 – 4 bisqued pieces and use provided glazes to create lustrous finishes and achieve unusual results. Students will be working around open flame, so wearing long sleeves, natural fiber based clothing, and close-toed shoes is recommended.

Introduction to Wheel Pottery Ages: 16+

This class focuses on the basics of creating forms on the potter’s wheel.

Students explore making traditional tableware including bowls, cups and mugs with self-directed projects for more experienced students.

Special surface decoration and glazing techniques are also covered to achieve unique results. Class fee provides each student 25 pounds of clay, glazes and related firings. Clay tool kit required and may be purchased at Rosewood front office. *Class will not meet on Nov. 22.

Learn to Draw Students learn the fundamentals of drawing through instructor technique and skill demonstrations and lots of practice. Students draw from still life motifs using graphite and charcoal. Shibori Fabric Dyeing Ages: 16+

Intermediate Needle Felting: Felting A Fox With A Wire Armature

In this class, students take their art to the next level by learning how to create a gently posable fox using a simple armature creating a base for three-dimensional needle felt shapes. Additionally, students learn how to needle felt over the armature to create basic shapes of their fox, how to blend colors of wool to create the colors for their fox, and how to add details at the end like eyes and noses. Class covers how to add acrylic rhinestones, polymer clay details, or 3-D pen-drawn details. All materials provided.

Needle Felt Pet and Animal Portraits Ages: 13+

Students learn the art of needle felting while creating a 2-D portrait of a pet or animal from a photo. Students learn everything from how to cut a basic shape out of a wool sheet, coloration, markings, detailing using wool roving, card and blending different colors of wool, using fine art markers and felt pens to add smaller details and how to finish the project to make it a pin, magnet, or ornament. In this class, students learn the basics of making soap from scratch and get hands-on experience by making a 1.5 lb batch of soap to take home. Students will design their own fragrances for their batch of soap, using the provided essential and/or fragrance oils. Celebrating their 59th year, the Kettering Civic Band has performed throughout the region and Canada as well as in sister cities, Steyr, Austria and Kettering, England. The band rehearses each Monday evening at the Kettering Middle School throughout the year. Summer performance schedules include community concerts and large public festivals. The program is for adults and young people who have a minimum amount of high school musical training. The organization is an excellent source for those who wish to gain concert band experience. ADULT EDUCATOR SPOTLIGHT Meet Ceramics Instructor Cynthia Bornhorst-Winslow: Cynthia has an extensive background teaching, making and exhibiting her ceramic work. She has both a Bachelor o f Fi n e Ar t s a n d a n MA from Wright State University, graduating with honors. She won outstanding graduate student of the year in her Humanities Program in 2012. She has won many fellowships and awards, including an Ohio Arts Council Individual Artist Fellowship, and two separate masters fellowships from Montgomer y Count y Regional Arts & Cultural District.

Cynthia currently teaches Introduction to Wheel Pottery at Rosewood Arts Centre.

VISITOR POLICY: All participants and observers must pay open

studio fees to stay longer than 30 minutes. Children under 5 years old are not permitted in open studio. Those under 16 must be supervised by an adult 21 years of age or older (no more than two children per adult). All studio patrons, including currently enrolled students, must sign in and pay fees at the Rosewood office. All open studio work-in-progress may not be left more than 30 minutes unattended.

STUDENT POLICY: Adult students currently enrolled in studio classes will receive a student pass card for four sessions of studio time. Students staying over 30 minutes after the end of class must sign in and use this pass card.

Unclaimed pieces left after 30 days will be discarded or considered a donation to Rosewood.

Rosewood Arts Centre Canceled Classes

Rosewood Arts Centre reserves the right to cancel any class and to substitute faculty when necessary. Classes will be canceled three working days prior to the starting date when there is insufficient enrollment.

Artist Studios

Artist studios are available at Rosewood Arts Centre for artists with an active practice and a commitment to sharing their work with the Kettering community. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis and reviewed as studio spaces become available. Studio spaces start at $85/month for Kettering residents. CERAMIC STUDIO: Clay fee of $20 includes 25 pounds of clay and

related firing and glazes. Only clay purchased at Rosewood may be used in our studios and firings. Clay purchased at Rosewood may not be removed from the facility for work at home. You must supply your own tools. The studio is designed as a community facility and, as such, is not equipped to accommodate production pottery quantities. All open studio and private studio users are limited to three (3) cubic feet per week of kiln use. Attendance at a free ceramic studio orientation is required of all first-time participants.

DARKROOM: Participants must be at least 16 years old, demonstrate previous experience in black and white darkroom processes, and attend a Rosewood orientation session. Check at the Rosewood office for more information on eligibility or for the orientation schedule and to make an appointment.

GLASS STUDIO: The glass studio is available to students who wish

to finish class work, have attended a class previously or have prior experience in cold or warm glass. Participants must be at least 16 years old and attend a Rosewood orientation session. Fees for kiln or torch usage are $5 respectively for up to 3 hours.

RESIDENT STATUS

The Resident Card has been designed to identify resident and non-resident users. To receive resident rates when attending drop-in and/or daily admission activities or registering for a program, Kettering residents or a person working in Kettering must produce identification. The following sources of I.D. are accepted as proof of residency.

Living in Kettering: • A valid Ohio driver’s license with Kettering address • Current utility bill with Kettering address, accompanied by a valid photo I.D.

Working in Kettering:

• Pay stub that includes City of Kettering income tax withholding.

Youth (defined as persons 17 or younger): • School I.D.s are accepted for youth 17 and under.

The Resident Card will provide quick identification at Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts facilities or programs and identify them to be entitled to the Kettering resident fee. The free Resident Card can be obtained at any information desk.

PAYMENT METHODS

The City will accept cash, personal checks, credit cards (Visa, MasterCard and Discover) and money orders for the payment of fees. The City can only accept debit cards that can be processed as credit cards (non-pin). The City will charge a $25 service fee for all checks not honored for any reason by the bank. Checks should be made payable to: City of Kettering.

CONFIRMATION

For Mail-in and Drop-off Registrations Once your registration is processed, a confirmation will be emailed to you including your class enrollment status. If we were unable to place you in a class, your payment will be returned to you.

LATE REGISTRATION

Late registrations will be accepted prior to the second class meeting. After the second class meeting, no registrations will be accepted. Individuals registering late will be required to pay the total class fee.

REFUND POLICY

OUR COMMITMENT TO YOU

We strive for positive experiences and excellence in everything we do. All refunds will be made according to the following guidelines: • If you have attended one of our classes or purchased a pass and are dissatisfied, call us. We will offer a prorated refund.

• If you were unable to attend a set of classes, we will try to transfer you to another section. Otherwise, we will offer a 50% refund of the class price.

• Special consideration will be given for life altering situations.

• Refund requests must be made within 30 days of a registered program’s end date (effective January 1, 2016).

Refunds will be issued via the following method: If the original transaction was paid using cash, check or household credit, the refund will be issued via City check. If the original transaction was paid by credit or debit card, the refund will be issued back to the card used for payment.

Refunds issued via City check will follow the Finance Department’s bill-paying schedule.

There will be no cash refunds.

This policy does not apply to facility rentals. See your rental contract for cancelation details.

NOTICE TO PARTICIPANTS Participants must recognize that all classes/activities of a physical nature involve some risk and by registering for a class/activity of this nature, there is an assumption of risk by the participant. The City of Kettering Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department is dedicated to providing safe facilities and equipment for all participants, as well as qualified staff. Every effort is made to ensure the safety of the participants and to provide them with first-class recreational activities, facilities and parks. In the event of a serious accident or illness, it is the policy of the City of Kettering to: • Contact the Kettering Fire Department Paramedics to perform first aid and, when necessary, recommend transport of the victim to a hospital; and • Reach the parent or guardian as soon as the situation allows.
