Kris’ Corner The holidays are approaching and we know they can bring stress. Common causes of holiday stress are finances, families, time, and grief. I plan ahead of time to help with the finance and time stressors. I buy a turkey when they are on sale and keep it in my freezer until it is needed for a meal. I buy gifts all year. This allows me to buy presents when they are on sale; or whenever I have a bit of extra money. The thing to remember about buying gifts ahead of time is remembering where you put them. Take it from me, forgetting does come with its own stress. To help with family stress, it is important to set boundaries. When our daughter was born, my husband and I wanted to establish our own family traditions. Instead of running around and going to two different houses for every holiday, we stayed home for some of them—like Thanksgiving. The hardest stressor for me is grief. After my mother-in-law passed away, I knew we would experience a loss, but it really hit me when I pulled her stocking out of our holiday bins. This year will be our first holiday season without my dad. Grief can make the holidays especially difficult, so it's important to give yourself grace and find ways to navigate the season that feel right for you. Allow yourself to feel your emotions, create new traditions by sharing memories and stories, and make self-care a priority. Plan ahead, set boundaries, take care of yourself, and have a wonderful holiday season! Page 3 | Roseville Area Senior Program
