Holiday Cheer—Bingo!* Wednesday, December 20th 1:00—2:30pm Assembly Hall Register By: Friday, December 15th Cost: FREE Come and Deck the Halls with us at the Steeple Center, Assembly Hall that is, for our 7th annual Holiday Cheer party. This year we will celebrate the holiday season with some good old-fashioned Bingo! There will be prizes, refreshments and yummy holiday treats for all.

2024 RAS Membership It’s that time of year again! You can now renew your RAS Membership for 2024. There are many ways to get involved with the Rosemount Area Seniors at the Steeple Center. Here is a list of some of the current opportunities. Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have questions, would like more details or if you are interested in any of these positions. These programs wouldn’t happen without the help of volunteers!

THE STEEPLE CENTER Welcome readers to the “News from the Steeple Center”, a publication for 55 plus/seniors in the Rosemount community. The Steeple Center houses the majority of the programs and events for those 55 plus.

Programs are offered by the City of Rosemount Parks & Recreation Department.

Note from the President Hello December.

We’re nearing the end of another great year we’ve been given. I was wondering what you have done to make it memorable. I’m sure you’ve been very supportive of your families and maintained continued friendships with your friends and neighbors. I am sure your schools, churches, and chosen organizations have gained from your participation and activities you are involved with.

I believe our elected officials and our Advisory Committee have completed and done many positive things for our RAS membership. Watching our membership grow above and beyond 305 members, receiving thanks and appreciation for our efforts and positive changes made to our policies and procedures and our continued relationship with the City of Rosemount Parks and Recreations are just a sampling of our projects we worked on and completed in 2023.

What does 2024 hold and which resolutions can we hold and maintain as we start a new year? As you read our RAS Advisory Committee Policies & Procedures, think about any activities you enjoy. Please complete your application for Parks & Recreation RAS Advisory Committee and forward to Stephanie Baumann.

Let’s give thanks for a great 2023 and welcome in 2024 with open arms and open minds.

Make sure to check upcoming newsletters and the Winter/Spring Parks & Rec brochure for more details and registration information on these and more exciting trips. Registration for these trips will open on Monday, December 4th at 8:00am. You can register online or in person at the Parks & Rec office in the Community Center or at the Steeple Center. The Steeple Center will open early at 8:00am that morning.

R A S Fa l l M y s t e r y T r i p A S u c c e s s !

A group of 50 had a wonderful time at the Rosemount Area Seniors’ fall mystery trip on Wednesday, October 18th! The group stopped first at the beautiful Lakewood Cemetery located along the chain of lakes in Minneapolis. There was an opportunity to see the historic Memorial Chapel, add a ribbon in memory of a loved one to the Living Memory Tree, and then take part in a narrated driving tour to learn more about Lakewood’s history, famous memorials, and art and symbolism.

The fall colors had really started to pop that week, so it was a beautiful tour! The group also enjoyed a buffet lunch at Q. Cumbers restaurant in Edina before returning home and receiving a cupcake treat for the road. A big thank you to Ginny Kaiser and Karen Schraan for planning this wonderful trip!

Craft Club* Tuesday, December 19, 1:00pm Steeple Center, Room 202 Register By: December 12 Cost: $6/person Project: Holiday Twig Trees Join us for a fun afternoon of crafting! Supplies and tools will be provided, and a facilitator will be present to lead the project. Please note that pictures are examples only; actual projects will vary. Yoga* Tuesdays: Nov. 28—Dec. 19 Thursdays: December 7—28 1:00-2:00pm Register By: 1 WEEK Prior to Session Cost: $30/session (4 classes) Steeple Center, Room 200 Join instructors Stacey Popp (Tuesdays) and Lori Kearney (Thursdays) for this 50+ yoga class. Proper breathing and gentle postures will be taught to enhance strength and mobility. Chairs are available and can be used to adapt poses for your comfort. The class environment will help promote peaceful, joyful and healthy individuals. Participants are encouraged to bring their own mats.

DrumFIT Cardio Drumming* Tuesdays, 10:00am, $10/month Room 200 Register By: December 4 We have partnered with DrumFIT, the world’s leading cardio drumming program, to have access to their extensive on-demand class content and video library. DrumFIT is a unique cardio drumming program, designed for older adults, that uses movement and rhythm to benefit both the mind and body.

Blood Pressure Checks Tuesday, December 5 10:45—11:15am Steeple Center, Conference Room A nurse from The Rosemount Senior Living will be at the Steeple Center the first Tuesday of each month to do FREE blood pressure checks!

Ro s e m o u nt A r e a A r t s C o u n c i l (RA AC ) E v e n ts The Rosemount Area Arts Council (RAAC) hosts many exciting events at the Steeple Center that you can take advantage of. Tickets can be purchased online at RAAC’s website www.rosemountarts.com, at the Steeple Center during their Box Office Hours (Mondays 10am-12pm, Tuesdays 9-11am and Thursdays 13pm), or at the door.

RAAC’s PHD and UFO Group: Do you have any projects half done (PHDs) or unfinished objects (UFOs) hanging around your house? Be it knitting, crocheting, beadwork, embroidery, wool work or any other type of hand work, we would love to have you join our group.

This is a social group hoping to finish projects while enjoying the camaraderie found with like artists. There is no fee associated with joining this group. Second Act Players The Second Act Players of Rosemount is a membership organization for seniors age 50 and over, interested in the theater. There are many opportunities for becoming involved, including: acting in plays and skits, set construction, stage management, directing, lighting and sound operation, script writing, costume design, classes, field trips, improvisational workshops, community outreach, and more. “Free Air” Performances—$22 Saturdays, November 11th & 18th, 2pm and 7pm

Background: In partnership with the Rosemount Area Historical Society (RAHS), RAAC is producing a unique theatrical project. The Minnesota Historical Society has designated that a movie called Free Air was the first movie filmed in Minnesota. It was a silent film based on the book of the same title, written by Pulitzer Prize and Nobel Prize-winning Minnesota author, Sinclair Lewis.

The movie was made in 1921 and was partially filmed in Rosemount. It was one of the first films with a strong female character, the first travelogue story showing the country, and one of the first films shot on-site rather than at a studio in Hollywood. As has happened to the vast majority of silent films, the movie and all copies of it have been lost. But the daughter of one of the producers kept a library of still photographs from the production.

She connected with the RAHS and donated the collection to them. John Loch has re-created the story for the stage with live-action, photographs projected on a large screen, and accompaniment by live piano music and narration.

Christmas Tree Lighting —FREE Saturday, November 25th, 6pm

This traditional lighting is for the whole family. The event will include an address from the Mayor, tree lighting, music and treats!

Christmas at the Steeple Center—$15 for adults, $10 for children under 12 Saturday, December 2nd, 2pm and 7pm

Christmas at the Steeple Center returns this year. This year's show includes music by the RAAC Singers, the elves, skits by the Second Act Players, the RAVE Brass Band, dancers and more.
