Artificial Intelligence — A Major for Innovators

Artificial Intelligence is transforming industries—from health care and transportation to finance and entertainment. The AI major reflects Rose-Hulman’s commitment to preparing students for the future and includes hands-on projects, interdisciplinary learning, and courses taught by faculty with real-world experience.

The AI major is designed for students who want to obtain a deep understanding of the theory behind modern and classical AI and paves the way for them to be involved in a) the development of the next generation of AI systems, b) leveraging AI responsibly to develop solutions to complex real world problems and c) research and develop guardrails to ensure safe systems. We want our students to cultivate the judgment and skill needed to innovate responsibly in an era defined by data and computation.

Experience That Sets You Apart

• Research opportunities that start your first year on campus

• 96% of our classes are taught by full-time faculty with PhDs. Not lecturers or graduate assistants — actual professors!

• Hands-on experience in our state-of-the-art computer labs and computing infrastructure

• Class sizes are an average of 20 students, and our student-to-faculty ratio is 11 to 1. This means your professors get to know you from day one!

Why Major in AI?

AI skills are in high demand across nearly every field. Whether you’re a computer scientist, mechanical engineer, mathematician, or entrepreneur, expertise in AI opens doors. Rose-Hulman alumni with AI expertise have gone on to work in robotics, finance, health care technology, national defense, and more.

The AI major will give students the expertise to launch them into industry. The World Economic Forum’s “Future of Jobs 2025” report projects that AI and data science alone is expected to create 11 million jobs. Students graduating with a major in AI can pursue a wide range of roles across industries.

What You’ll Learn

Through a combination of core courses, advanced electives, and a hands-on project, you’ll gain:

• A foundation in artificial intelligence methods and algorithms

• Exposure to cutting-edge topics like deep learning, computer vision, agentic systems, responsible AI, and AI Safety

• Practical experience applying AI in your field of interest

Your AI coursework will include:

• Core Concepts: CS and Math Fundamentals, CSSE 313 - Artificial Intelligence, CSSE 330Debugging, CSSE/MA 384 - Data Mining

• Machine Learning: MA 373 – Linear Algebra, CSSE/MA416 Deep Learning, CSSE 417 –Designing and Building AI Systems, CSSE 418 – Professional SE Practices

• Advanced Topics: Choose from 26 approved courses to supplement your AI depth (course such as Computer Vision, NLP, Image Recognition, Bio-Inspired Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Deep Reinforcement Learning, Advanced AI, and Generative AI)

• Ethics: CSSE 316 - AI Safety, PHIL H202 Business & Engineering Ethics

• Capstone Project: A hands-on, AI project with a written report and public presentation

AI and the Pathway to Research and Industry

A distinguishing feature of Rose-Hulman is that students can access AI research opportunities as early as their first year. Additionally, Rose faculty are helping companies adopt AI in their business practices. At least one-fourth of the computer science faculty engage in industry consulting related to AI. These partnerships create learning opportunities that directly benefit students.

“If a student wants to perform research in AI, we have a list of faculty members willing to work with them,” said Sriram Mohan, PhD, department head and professor of computer science and software engineering. “This is not research for the sake of research. It leads to student publications in AI. Additionally, our faculty leverage their industry consulting to refine and develop coursework to ensure our curriculum is up to date.”

Experiential Learning

We are big believers in learning by doing. That is why you’ll have plenty of opportunities to apply what you learn in labs, maker spaces, and project work. We’re also closely tied to several of Rose-Hulman’s coolest competition teams and clubs, including:

• WOLF PAC (Women of Like Fields Passionate About Computing)

• Grand Prix Engineering

• Rocketry Club

• Chem E Car

• Cybersecurity Competition Team

• Robotics Club

• ACM Programming Team
