Marbella and the Costa del Sol have been home to me since 1986 when I moved to Cabopino from the UK with my family. Cabopino really was a “hidden gem” in those days, and all that existed were a couple of bars and restaurants overlooking the marina. It was idyllic and felt like our very own piece of paradise.
Fast forward 38 years. Cabopino still retains much of its original charm but now offers a fabulous choice of waterfront restaurants, vibrant bars, a long, sandy beach and a wide selection of superb properties. 1 ELVIRIA TO LA CALA BOARDWALK
This beautiful hike takes in some of Marbella and Elviria’s most stunning beaches and seaside landscapes. From Elviria, start at the Chiringuito Carlos y Paola, heading east towards Marbesa, Cabopino and the picturesque Dunas de Artola nature reserve. Why not stop off at one of the beach bars, such as Andy’s Beach or La Lonja at Cabopino on route? Follow the scenic path past Calahonda, through to La Cala de Mijas. You will pass some of the most luxurious real estate on the Costa del Sol and enjoy breathtaking views of the Mediterranean. Enjoy all or part of the walk, stopping off for coffee, a cool cocktail or lunch on the way.
2 ADVENTURA PARK – ‘’FOR THE KIDS’’
Aventura Amazonia is probably the best attraction for all the family in Marbella. Situated in Elviria, with 24 ziplines, including the longest treetop zipline in Andalusia at 240m, 6 circuits and 103 challenges, this amazing park is close to the Elviria exit on the mountainside of the A7. 3 VISIT LA CALA MARKET
La Cala Market takes place every Wednesday & Saturday around and is a mecca for shopaholics. Make a day of it and enjoy lunch at one of the many restaurants near the market, while bagging bargains such as leather goods, handbags, shoes, handicrafts, ceramics and jewellery.
4 ST MICHAEL’S CAVE - ROCK OF GIBRALTAR
A fascinating attraction which probably gave birth to the story that the Rock of Gibraltar was linked to Africa through a subterranean passage. It was once believed that Spanish troops spent a night in the cave in 1704 after climbing the precipitous face of the rock. The cave is now open to visitors and makes a unique auditorium for concerts, ballet and drama. In 1972, a slice was cut off from the top end, revealing the interior structure of the stalagmite in dramatic fashion. Very highly recommended.
5 VISIT MALAGA
Culture vultures are spoilt for choice in Malaga, which is just at 45 minute drive from Marbella. Visit the Picasso Museum which hosts some of the artist’s most famous and stunning works of art, the stunning cathedral and the famous Calle Larios, the city’s main shopping street.
6 VISIT RONDA
Ronda is one of the most stunning white towns in Andalucia.
The three bridges that span the 120ft gorge are the most well-known and the tallest one is Puente Nuevo. The Arabic baths are also worth a visit as they date back to the 13th century, and the Plaza de Toros bullring, is one of the oldest in Spain. Reach Ronda by car in just one hour from Marbella.
7 TARIFA
Tarifa boasts some of the best beaches and waves in southern Spain. Attracting surfers and sun seekers from all over Europe, Tarifa is the point where the Atlantic and the Mediterranean meet, resulting in high waves. Tarifa is just a 90 minute drive from Marbella.
8 CAMINO DEL REY – ‘’KINGS WALK’’
The Caminito del Rey is spectacular from beginning to end, running through cliffs, canyons and a large, deep valley. It crosses the landscapes of Desfiladero de los Gaitanes, a gorge carved out by the river Guadalhorce, with walls 700m high. The boardwalks are the most famous part of the path due to their dangerous condition prior to restoration. A must-see attraction, the Caminito del Rey was built between 1901 and 1905 to provide workers at the hydroelectric power plants a means to cross between Chorro Falls and Gaitanejo Falls. Early booking is highly recommended and the walk takes about 3-4 hours from the start in the town of Ardales to the exit in Alora. A shuttle bus runs between the north and south ends of the trail.
9 SKI IN SIERRA NEVADA
You can reach the Sierra Nevada mountain range in just over 2 hours from Marbella. Ski, snowboard or toboggan on over 100 runs for all abilities. The main season starts in November and lasts until April.
10 TAPAS TOUR - MARBELLA OLD TOWN
A tapas tour is a tasty way to while away an afternoon or evening in Marbella. Explore the back streets and the old town for some of the best tapas bars in southern Spain, offering local favourites such as stuffed red peppers, Spanish omelette and Serrano ham.

A TRADITION OF EXCELLENCE
The English International College has been synonymous with education since the 80s’. As a long-time resident myself, I have had younger friends who attended (as I had already had had my education in the UK) but also, I did know some of the teachers, being of similar ages. I decided to pay a visit to the landmark and meet up with the Head, Richard Sutcliffe. A dedicated professional, he oozes enthusiasm for what is now ‘his baby’.
He told me over a coffee in his office, that “The English International College has always been at the Forefront of education on the Costa del Sol. The expectations the teachers set, and the support the parents give, allow students to aspire to, achieve and even exceed, their goals”.
Last academic year, 2022/2023, the school celebrated its 40th anniversary. From its humble beginnings, with a little over 50 students, a small group of teachers and parents, moved from the German College, Elviria to the Ricmar premises. Led by Mrs Valerie Artacho, a posse of teachers and parents, spent the summer cleaning, re-modelling the old Hotel and getting the school ready for its opening in September 1982.
This close-knit group of teachers and parents, helped make the school become prominent in the 90s’. The school has always relied on its teachers and the strong academic ethos they instil in their students.
It took a little over 20 years to transform itself into the most prestigious and best known, academic institution on the coast.

Richard continues, “However, the fundamental values of the school never left. Teachers are still engaging students through their passion, there are small class sizes where teachers grow to know the students, not only academically, but on a personal level; laying the foundation to creating the amazing relationships between the teachers and students and allowing our students to achieve unprecedented academic success. To this day they have never allowed these values to disappear. It has always been and will remain, a family school.”
There has been a change in the leadership of the school with the inaugural Senior Leadership Team (SLT) where, Mrs Harriet Gibson, Mr Pete Willis and Head Teacher, Richard Sutcliffe, lead the staff and the academic running of the school. They have learned valuable lessons from this past year, and will continue to embrace innovation, nurture creativity, and foster a supportive learning environment.
Their goal remains the same - to empower every student to reach their full potential, to cultivate critical thinking, selfintrospection, problem-solving skills, and to instil in them a lifelong love of learning.
Richard says with a huge sense of pride, “For a school almost bespoke in proportions, our consistent and proven ability to regularly secure Oxbridge places is truly remarkable. A feat indebted to every single teacher, lesson, interaction and conversation in which each EIC student has been immersed, and exposed to, from the day they enter our gates. Moreover, whilst we can, and should all, be proud of the elevated ¨value added¨ that this school academically attains year in, year out, perhaps our greatest feat is the calibre and indeed character of former students who espouse our values.”
I have always been a little in awe of the EIC; as I said, many of my colleagues, among whom there are a few well known residents, and some teachers — mostly retired now — all speak fondly of their alma mater. The sense of family and pride is shown in the number of former students who have returned as parents, enrolling their own children to give them the same educational start in life that they themselves remember so fondly.
It’s not just pupils and parents that keep this a family operation. Richard himself was not only a former pupil, but he was preceded by his father who too held the mantel of Head Teacher; a mantel of which he is incredibly proud.
Our meeting is coming to an end, but a short walk around the building before we depart, confirms the school’s determination to raise and maintain standards in everything that they do.
Richard concludes, “Looking ahead, I am filled with optimism for the future of education. The E.I.C. will remain at the forefront of that education on the Coast, constantly pushing the barriers of teaching and learning, educating students to become strong individuals, not scared of change. We continue to take full advantage of our outdoor sport and educational spaces; we have assemblies with keynote speakers, art exposés, musical performances and celebrating both sporting and educational excellence.”
We shake hands and he adds,
“This is a school where everybody counts.”

CONVEYANCING FOR PROPERTY PURCHASE
Legal representation and assistance is particularly necessary in Spain when purchasing or selling property. The Conveyancing process in Spain involves different degrees of participation by various parties: the seller, their legal representative, the real estate agent, the accountant, a notary public, the registrar, utilities companies, the town hall of the municipality where the purchase is being made, banks, and in some cases the local courts, regional authorities and even the seller’s neighbour (they may even have something to say). The lawyer will ensure that all parties are appropriately co-ordinated and followed-up with and will perform an investigation to ensure that the property is purchased without any previous charge or liability that could incur additional costs or reduce the property’s value.
WHAT THE PROPERTY PURCHASE REPRESENTATION SERVICE INCLUDES
Our conveyancing service includes the following:
1. Complete all necessar y searches on the legal status of the property and the developer/vendor, informing the buyer/s of any issues discovered that may influence the decision or conditions of the purchase.
2. Liaise and agree with vendor/s and/or lawyers in respect of terms and conditions of the purchase, ensuring compliance with current laws. In the
event that the vendors are non-resident in Spain, a lawyer ensures that any amount paid prior to completion is lodged safely with a resident party, preferably the vendor’s lawyer’s account.
3. Make preparations at the Notar y Public for completion of the purchase or any further preparations required relating to the purchase such as preparation of powers of attorney for individuals abroad (duly legalised and translated) which give authority to a physical person/s to act on behalf of the buyers.
4. Assist in the completion process and ensure title deeds are properly registered in the appropriate local Land Registry, and that the property(ies) is free from all charges and encumbrances, free from occupants and tenants, as well as payment of the relevant taxes associated with the purchase.
5. Assist in locating, negotiating and obtaining a mortgage loan to finance the purchase of the property. The obtaining of the mortgage loan may be in the form of an approval in principle prior to the signing of the private purchase contract and is understood without prejudice to any other mortgage facility provided by the developer or the vendor.
6. Obtain the NIE (Número de Identificación de Extranjeros), or foreigners identification number.

A smarter way to move currency
Rudolf Graf von Schönburg , popularly known as Count Rudi, is one of the key figures in the history of Marbella Club Hotel and the town of Marbella. Born on 25 September 1932 in the Wechselburg Castle in Germany, he spent his youth at his family’s property in Saxony until May 1945, when he was forced to take refuge with his family in the western part of the country due to harassment from Russian troops. After finishing college, Count Rudi started his higher education in hotel management in 1953 at the University of Hotel Management in Lausanne (Switzerland), where he obtained his qualification as Hotel Director awarded by the Swiss Society of Hotel Management.
During his education, he gained experience in the most prestigious luxury hotels in Switzerland and Germany, until Prince Alfonso of Hohenlohe took him on as assistant manager at the recently opened Marbella Club Hotel in 1956. After spending two years in Mexico, Count Rudi returned to Marbella Club Hotel in 1961 to assume the post of General Manager, a post he occupied until 1983. In 1971, he married Princess Maria Luisa of Prussia, great-granddaughter of the last Kaiser of Germany Wilhelm II , and cousin of the emeritus Queen Sofia. Their marriage has produced two children, Countess Sophie and Count Federico. In 1993, he returned to Marbella Club as board member of the company
He, as you would expect, is full of stories but the achievements of the hotel is his greatest satisfaction. He says he feels satisfied with a job well done, grateful for a sense of having worked on something as significant as Marbella Club Hotel. One of his most satisfying memories was receiving the award from his Majesty the emeritus King Juan Carlos I of Spain and the Gran Cruz award from the Order of Isabella the Catholic for the hotel’s efforts in promoting Spanish tourism and the strong relationships Spain has with its European neighbours and other international countries.
Of the people he most admired was the late Queen of England, Queen Elizabeth the second. The qualities he looks

for in his fellow man, “A sense of responsibility, positivity and courage.” And qualities in a woman? “Loyalty, class and tenderness” obviously something that he sees in his beautiful wife of more than 50 years Princess Maria Luis. A staunch catholic his motto was always to be a good one and whilst he is not afraid of the final curtain, he hopes to say goodbye without suffering but is concerned he may pass without having a final confession.
He still plays an immense part at the hotel at 92 years of age this year, be it more as a figure head. Condé Rudi without the Marbella Club is as unthinkable as the Marbella Club without Condé Rudi.

Toni Dalli, icon of Marbella
n the early eighties there was the Conde Rudolf Graf von Schönburg and Toni Dalli. Not the same Royal image perhaps, but the maestro and restaurateur, was just as synonymous with the Marbella scene as Conde Rudi. The same stars that would stay at the Marbella Club would often been seen in Dalli’s Ristorante on the Golden Mile. Whether it was Sean Connery or Jimmy Tarbuck they came to eat his food but more importantly be in the company of one of the South of Spain’s pioneers. Everyone in Marbella knew Toni Dalli. If not personally they knew of his restaurant on the Golden Mile and they also heard he could ‘sing a bit’.
What many don’t know was that Toni was born Antonio D’Alessandro, in Pescara, Abruzzo, in central Italy After singing at local functions there as a boy, he moved to Yorkshire, England at the age of sixteen. He became a British resident by working in the coal mines and steel mills for four years.
THE DAWN OF A MUSICAL CAREER
Whilst a miner he performed at local Working Men’s Clubs and appeared in several TV amateur shows, such as Top Down, Bid For Fame, What Makes A Star and The Carroll Levis Discovery Show. He could not take up professional singing until he had completed the necessary four years residency prerequisite of working in the steelworks.
Dalli was soon booked at the Cecil Cinema in Hull. Here, he was spotted by Percy Livingstone and Rob Goldstein (from 20th Century Fox), who told him that he must leave Yorkshire and go to London.
Years ago, Toni recalled the evening that he met Percy Livingstone, “One evening a member of staff at the Cecil came and said that the gaffer wanted to see me. Although business
was fantastic, with queues forming most nights, I just wondered if I was on the way out….I knocked on Mr. Evans’ office door…and he welcomed me in and introduced me to a guy called Percy Livingstone who turned out to be the number two to the legendary Bob Goldstein of 20th Century Fox.
Percy said that he had heard me singing and I had to join his organization in London. ‘Me?’ I asked. ‘But I’m a star and I’m earning 50 pounds a week here in Yorkshire’. After a lot of argy-bargy Mr. Evans insisted that I must go. He told me that he didn’t want to lose me but for my own sake I had to go to the big city to further my career. I was a little bewildered but realised I may only get one chance…”
By May 1957, Toni was studying under singing teacher Dino Borgiole, and in October 1957, he performed at the Embassy Club. It was here that he was discovered by the comedian Max Bygraves, whose agent, Jock Jacobsen, also signed Dalli on.

Toni continued, “I couldn’t believe it, within no time at all I had got myself an agent, thanks to Max Bygraves, I had an EMI recording contract, had a spot on BBC and now they wanted me to go to Hollywood and Las Vegas and also appear on the Ed Sullivan Show! When was my luck going to run out? It was an exciting time alright but full of ifs and buts along the way”.
By this time, Toni was appearing in numerous major TV shows. In February 1958, he made his first appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show in New York, followed by major performances at the Moulin Rouge, Hollywood, the Desert Inn in Las Vegas and Carnegie Hall in New York.
Uponhis return to England, a contract was waiting for him with EMI Records and his first of five albums was recorded, including the hit song Come Prima (More Than Ever).
Later, he recorded with Capitol Records and Decca, appearing in theatres throughout the world. These included two one-manshows at the Carnegie Hall and Hollywood Bowl.
MIGHTY MARIO
When Mario Lanza died in 1959, Dalli was signed up to do a motion picture based on his life, The Mario Lanza Story. The film was never released, for legal reasons. Dalli also sang in the US, where he had his own TV show on KCOP in Los Angeles for 13 weeks. He also worked in Australia, South Africa and Hong Kong.
Toni retired from show business in 1980 and was persuaded by long-time friends Jimmy Tarbuck and Sean Connery to consider relocating to Marbella, and not California. After spending a short time on the Costa del Sol, Toni decided to move to Marbella permanently opening Toni Dalli’s restaurant at the Oasis Club which was located front line beach on the Golden Mile. The club became a focal point for people wanting to relocate to Marbella and Toni spent the next 25 years promoting the area in the press and on TV around Europe.
Continuing his reminiscences Toni remembers that “Sean Connery always found time during his very busy career, to say ‘Hello’ and I really appreciated his kind thoughts and encouragement especially during my bad times. Sean already had a home in Marbella when we moved to the coast. We soon struck up a good partnership at golf and played four or five times a week at Aloha or Las Brisas when Sean was not filming. We became virtually unbeatable and several pairs would challenge us. Over a period of time, we were only beaten once in 25 games! We became THE pair to beat and, as the winners normally paid for the lunch, we began to wonder if the food and wine was more important to the opposition than winning! Sean is a great competitor and loves
to win. I am very similar in attitude so between the two of us we made a formidable partnership.”
FAMILY’S EVERYTHING
Toni was also a great family man and along with his beloved wife Valerie, raised four children, Marco, Simon and Nicky. With his boys they formed the iconic Ferrari Owners Club which still exists today.
1987 the boys opened their first Pasta & Pizza factory in Puerto Banus. Three other restaurants followed in quick succession in Marbella, Puerto Banús and Málaga.
Toni sadly passed away in in April 2021 at the age of 88. But the dynasty that is the Dalli Brothers, continues. Marco Dalli has now taken on his father’s mantle and not only promotes Marbella as a destination, but also helps people establish themselves in the city with his extensive network of contacts.
The business of “Toni Dalli & Associates” is still in family hands. Toni would be proud.

His breakfast show warms listeners, like the first cup of coffee, with his soft accent and his sense of humour: He can make you smile with his Tony Blackburnesque type jokes, or give you a belly laugh that you get from listening to his Spanish sidekick, Mari Carmen, attempting to teach him Spanish on air.
CREATING SMILES OVER THE AIR WAVES
Dave Hodgson arrived in Spain in 2009 to pursue the two passions of his life, Radio and God. The 47 year old married man has two beautiful children, courtesy of his long suffering wife, teacher Naomi, the daughter of his first pastor here in Spain, in Benalmadena. The couple then took over their first Encounter Church in Calahonda and are now celebrating the opening of their new premises in La Cala de Mijas. With two successes in his life (five if you count Naomi and the children) Dave has the best of both worlds; both spiritually and physically.
It’s all a far cry from the young man from the Derbyshire Dales who had his first job with his Dad, selling reconditioned TV’s and electricals from his father’s shop in Derby. It wasn’t long before he spread his wings and worked as a car valet and then later as a parts delivery driver. This gave him the opportunity to follow his first passion, Radio. The job meant he could listen to music all day long. He had always wanted to be a Radio DJ, but as everybody knows, getting into broadcasting in any of its forms, is difficult. No experience — no job. No job — no experience; so, DJ’ing was put on the back burner.
But his life was to change radically at the age of 17, when he was invited to a church in Derby. That short attendance affected him strongly and he realised that, that was to spark his second passion, religion. He gave up his job as a driver and went to Bible College in Nantwich Cheshire and, from that time, he knew he wanted to serve God. He became a ‘Christian’ in 1992 and was invited to join the Elim Pentecostal Church in Derby and never looked back.
On the contrary, he was to look forward: some 2400 kilometres (1500 miles). Over a beer in La Cala de Mijas, Dave told me that, once again, God was guiding him and telling him Spain is where he needed to be.
“I felt this overwhelming desire to live in Spain. Having visited the Costa Blanca and Barcelona and Madrid, I was drawn by the culture and the people and I had always felt that Spain was a religious place. But the Christian life is more than a religion it’s a relationship with ‘A God’. I first ministered in Spain in Benalmadena, which is where I met Naomi, and God must have been backing me then too, as when I asked her,
she agreed to marry me. We then opened our first pastorship together in Calahonda and after 10 years we are now celebrating our new premises at The Casbar Live Lounge in Torrenueva.”
“So,” I asked, “had you decided that that was the rest of your life sorted and that your idea of being a Radio presenter was abandoned?”
“No. I had heard of Talk Radio Europe in its previous guise of Radio Europe Mediterraneo (REM) and contacted the station manager and made a pitch for a Sunday morning ‘God Spot’ The Two Revs.”
It was an immediate success and, with his co-presenter Howard King, himself a great entertainer; it became an hour that everyone enjoyed listening to. I know, as I was one of them.
He continued, “I was offered an evening spot which I grabbed with both hands and after a while I took over the afternoon slot.”
‘The Daily’ was an interactive family show which soon got Dave a following of ardent fans. Two years ago, he landed the plum job as breakfast presenter; ‘Daybreak with Dave’ has gone on to be one of the most popular programmes on the station.

SPOTLIGHT ON La Cala de Mijas
As our magazine has extended its coverage to include Calahonda and La Cala de Mijas we thought that a bit of local historical information would be interesting
Once a sleepy little white washed fishing village, known previously as “la Cala del Moral” (English: the bay of mulberries) due to the mulberry trees growing in the area, the name was changed in the 1970s to La Cala de Mijas in order to avoid confusion with the similarly named La Cala de Moral just outside of Málaga. in those early tourist days, La Cala boasted some 30 fishermen’s cottages, a couple of bars, an open-air summer cinema a butchers, grocers shop a small chapel and a school — and little else.
Of ecological importance, is the seabed of the Mijas coast, which is home to a great biodiversity in which a large number of European, African, Atlantic and Mediterranean species coexist. It was accessible only via tracks through the hills via Entrerrios and the Calahonda area, until the 1920’s it was a very small hamlet clustered around the watch tower, and it had an inn, which still exists, Venta Butibamba.
The town started to develop further after the initial tourism boom of the sixties but, in the 1920’s the N340 which up until the late eighties, was still on the main road from Fuengirola to Marbella, latterly complete with traffic lights and subsequent traffic jams, before the redesign of the N340 (by which the main road used to be known up until a few years ago) bypassed the village.
Since then, the village has become a ‘town’: Not just a town, but an important part of the Costa del Sol infrastructure; as any local will tell you La Cala has expanded in all directions — mainly in land — and now boasts a new health clinic, international supermarkets and of course, established for many years, La Cala Golf and Country Club Resort.
Historically it has been a place of defence, fortified with four towers along the Mediterranean coast of Andalucia, whose function was to give notice of the presence of enemy ships to the garrisons of Fuengirola, Benalmadena and Marbella. This was one of the places where the Berbers attacked. (the Berbers are the indigenous people of North Africa): a territory that extends from present-day Morocco in the West of Africa to Libya in the east.
Four towers remain from its past, that formed part of the fortified line along the Andalusian Mediterranean coast, whose defensive function was to give notice in the presence of enemy ships so that the garrisons of Fuengirola, Benalmádena and Marbella, among others, would go to the place where the pirates attacked. One of the towers is in La Cala, the others are located in various urbanizations of Mijas Costa. These towers are: Torre de Calahonda (16th century), located in Calahonda: Torrenueva de La Cala del Moral (probably the most modern tower on the entire coast, 19th century), located in the Torrenueva urbanization: Battery tower of La Cala del Moral (16th century), located in La Cala de Mijas, which you can visit, and Torre de Calaburras (built around 1515 in Punta de Calaburras), located in the El Faro urbanization towards Marbella.

The TV Celebrity Chef and long-time Mijas Costa resident, returned to his ‘pueblo’ La Cala de Mijas to open his new Geranium restaurant in October 2023. I caught up with him in a bar for a glass of wine, a couple of weeks ago.
I asked him why he decided to stay with the name Geranium having had the Little Geranium in Spain and the famous Pink Geranium in Cambridgeshire, reputedly Prince Charles’ (now King of course) favourite restaurant.
“Some friends suggested that we adapt the name to reflect the new operation, but My Name and Geranium are synonymous and both mean good, creative innovative food; and that’s what we will serve. Why change something that was never broken? Little Geranium and Pink Geranium both won accolades and so did I, so that’s the track on which we will travel,” said Steven.
“Your last restaurant in La Cala was in the centre, are you concerned that this site is a bit out-of-the-way?” I asked
“Not at all; as we all know La Cala is bursting at the seams and is growing North and it is already getting busier. This venue has ample parking all around. It is perfect.”

“You were back in the UK for a while, what made you come back?”
“Apart from the weather, the people that I missed and my friends of course. I also got divorced and that made me pine more for what is now my real home. I’ve was looking for months after I came back and asked a well-known restaurateur friend of mine, to help me find the right place. During that time, I was helping my friend Elliot at Olivia’s. Although it’s a fabulous restaurant and we did a good job together, the numbers we did in the restaurant were not conducive to my style of food. This new venue is, however, right up my street, or just down yours,” he smiled; “Since opening in October, I have to say we have been virtually full every night.”
“I suppose it’s the same sort of food as before?”
“The menu has some of my well-known dishes and there of course some new

ones. We have a bespoke wine list, compiled by my colleague who has a great knowledge and enthusiasm for the subject — as do I. It’s a great wine list. Apart from good quality House Wines we have a selection of house recommended wines and a selection of my personal choices as well — and a mixologist who provides traditional and creative cocktails. I am very happy to say that the front of house is in the hands of Youseff Edib who I have worked with before, and I have got a great Chef to work with me. He has been working in some great restaurants as head chef for many years and I’m so happy he joined us. Maurice Curtin is well known in Marbella West, but is now in Marbella East. He’s a young talented Irishman and I am so happy that we managed to persuade him to come with us. I have really enjoyed working with him and creating some unbelievable dishes. We have a strong team, all of whom will help put this Geranium on the map. We have been so happy to welcome old clients — and of course new — and if the comments and support I have had on social media are anything to go by, we are in for a great ride. After all, within three months we were number one on TripAdvisor.”
“Right” he said, “time waits for no man….especially me,” he donned his signature trilby hat and made his way down to his now very successful venue.

LA BUTIBAMBA:
A piece of history in La Cala de Mijas
Five generations of the same family have served customers who have included King Alfonso XIII, the bandit ‘El Tempranillo’, Ernest Hemingway and Camarón de la Isla as well as thousands of locals and visitors from elsewhere in Spain and abroad. The tenderness of the meat at La Butibamba is what makes it unmistakeable, according to the many fans of their 200-year-old recipe.
With a product that seems crisis-proof and even war-proof (it has survived two: the War of Independence and the Civil War), this ‘venta’, or roadside restaurant, in La Cala de Mijas has been run by five generations of the Porras family and doesn’t appear to be worried about the constantly rising inflation rate. A baguette big enough for two people and two soft drinks cost 7.80 € . Not even the most galloping CPI can spoil something that affordable.
The price, product and ambience in this venta (the slot machine rattles away, there are photos of the specialities on the walls and the TV is blaring at full volume, as custom dictates) could not be more traditional, but that hasn’t stopped kings, millionaires and world-famous artists appreciating the virtues of their legendary pork tenderloin. The democratic character of La Butibamba is part of its recipe for success and has a lot to do with its origins as a coaching inn in the early 19th century.
“When the original venta was built, it was just a simple hut and there was nothing else here: no houses, no highway. It was just earth, all around. But because the building was here, it was officially designated as a coaching inn and tobacco shop; and that was a good thing. It was regulated by the government and was obliged to provide shelter and food for travellers, no matter what time they turned up,” says the present manager of La Butibamba, Francisco Javier Sepúlveda, who is married to the founder’s great-granddaughter.
The origin of the name, the family says, comes from the muleteers in the old days, who would drink wine from containers known as ‘botes’ and used the expression “Qué ‘bamba’ he cogido!” to indicate that they were drunk. By that time, the establishment was much more than just a place to drink, eat and stay: it was also where all the mail for people living in that area would be delivered. It is still a landmark in the town and queues that form there at weekends is a testament to its longevity.

So, you will be pleased to know that the Costa del Sol boasts the most popular Classic and Sports Car Club which is open to all nationalities.
Ian Giles, Chairman/President of the club, explains the history:
“This vibrant and active classic and sportscar club was formed in September 2008 and has over 400 full members. We have a huge variety of cars of all shapes, sizes (and values!). At least six of our members have over 10 cars and two of our members have around 50 each!
These include all manner of Ferraris, RollsRoyce, Mercedes, Jaguars (including about a dozen E-Types) as well as two genuine Shelby 500 GT’s, Bentleys, McLaren F1, Daytonas, Dinos, Mustangs, Morgans, a Panther de-Ville, a 250GT Ferrari, a Ford Escort, genuine AC Cobras and much, much more.
We are proud to have quite a number of motor-sport ‘luminaries and characters as members from both the past and present. All are active within the Club. The Saturday following our club-meet we always have a car run which uses simple, rally-style Tulip road-books taking in stunning countryside with a coffee and/ or tapas halt and always a decent lunch at the end of it. Cost for this is only 20 € per car plus lunch. Excellent value!
We put on regular three, four, five and six day classic car tours as well as our monthly runs. We have many, many social events, parties etc and we get invited to many others too.
We also have a number of members still competing in various forms of motorsport around Spain which is always interesting.

FAST TRACK WITH Auto·Quick
Finding a reliable garage for servicing is a problem in any country, but add the language barrier and things can get complicated. I have been here for many years but I remember my first visit to get a car serviced. It was like going to a doctor whose daily language was one I didn’t use; much the same as with a car mechanic.
Also, you can come across the mañana approach; as in one case I took a classic car in for some work and told the owner I wasn’t in a hurry for it; I didn’t have it back until 10 years later! You won’t have that at AutoQuick in La Cala de Mijas. Not because they’re QuickQuick — they still have to diagnose, order parts, wait for delivery and then put it all together! — but they need the space and want the car finished ‘Quick’ so they can have room for other clients.
Manolo has owned the business since 1996 when they opened their first workshop at the Castillo Gas Station (Km207 as was) dedicated mainly to roadside assistance and vehicle repair services, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. During the first 12 years, the vast majority of days were spent in the workshop, even having to sleep there on a folding bed; Manolo remembers, “they were very hard years, but thanks to providing these services, that no one else provided on the coast, they made us known and managed to get us a good name in the industry.”
In 2005 they branched out to Fuengirola and opened a second workshop where they dedicated themselves to quick repairs and vehicle maintenance. It was only 150 sq mtrs but after a while, and with the demand for their services constantly increasing, in 2014 they moved to La Cala de Mijas, where they have 500 sq mtrs and they haven’t looked back since.
For the ex-pats, they have a secret weapon in Lee the Reception Manager who has lived in Spain for all his adult life and is completely bi-lingual so he can guide you through your problems and explain how they will solve it and more importantly, how much it will cost.
They currently employ a team of professional Mechanics,
Electricians, body work and painting, ITV Management, Documents, Taxes, Fines, Imports and Transfers, even personalised attention for collection at the Airport and at Home to provide the client with these services while they are in their home country. There is one person who decided that we should walk more and learn something at the same time. Mijas Walking Tours is the brainchild of local semi-retired businessman, Alan Boardman (below right).
Living in the beautiful, historic village of Mijas - just a twentyminute drive from La Cala de Mijas (from where this village gets its name) - and you are on the top of the world. Well, Mijas Costa!
Alan, like many semi-retired people in the South of Spain, (he and his wife have a shop in the village and he can be seen there a couple of days a week) didn’t want the sun, sea and sangria life from keeping him in good shape and encouraged other likeminded people to do the same by creating the group that learns, laughs, socialises and enjoys themselves, at the same time as collecting for local charities.
Over a beer in the famous Mijas Square with the bustle of residents and tourists around us, Alan tells me:
“I started the Walking Tours eight years ago because when my wife Jenny and I visit a place for the first time that’s exactly what we look for, as we believe it’s the best way to get “under the skin” of a place.
Apart from group guides working with tour operators, there were no such ‘Walking Tours of Mijas’ and so I set about building on the knowledge I had gathered during our (then) nine years living here. I spent the next twelve months researching online and reading various books about the village, plus talking to “Mijeños”, some of whom had lived here all their lives and who provided a peek into a world largely unseen by foreign visitors.
I am passionate about Mijas Pueblo and am told that this comes across loud and clear during the Walking Tours. There are several stories that never cease to amaze people and I’m sure these contribute to the many five-star reviews on TripAdvisor.
The most important element of course, is the money raised in support of local charities. I try and strike a balance between human causes and animal, Spanish charities and international and am proud that in the two years up to June 2023 the overall total raised is approaching 14,000 € .”
Mijas Walking Tours operates weekly from February to June and then September to December.
The Tour starts at 11:00 outside the Town Hall in Mijas Pueblo and lasts approximately three hours. It’s a gentle stroll with no steep climbs.
The Tour explains (solely in English in order to avoid delays) the historical, social and cultural development (in a fun way)
of Mijas and the wider Costa del Sol and visits parts of the pueblo often not frequented by people outside of the village. There are several fascinating stories too, most of them unknown to foreign residents and visitors.
There is a suggested minimum donation of just 5 € with all donations going to the nominated Costa del Sol charity of the month.
Groups are limited to a maximum of 12 people.

IF CATCHY NAMES ARE IMPORTANT IN GETTING YOUR MESSAGE OUTIT HAS TO BE BREXPATS!
EXACTLY EIGHT YEARS AGO, ON 23 JUNE 2016, THE BREXIT REFERENDUM RETURNED A POSITIVE RESULT TO THE UK LEAVING THE EU WHICH CAME AS AN UNWELCOME SURPRISE TO ALL OF US RESIDENTS LIVING HERE IN THE EU.
Maybe that is an exaggeration because, again, and perhaps even more surprisingly, some British residents here in Spain actually voted to leave the EU. I honestly can’t think what they were hoping for but it has left many of us up the proverbial ‘creek without a paddle’ and while many of them now regret their vote whether it be due to their lack of understanding, naivety or purely as a result of their gullibility in believing the misguided information of the leave campaign, there is little they can do to turn the clock back so we all have to suffer the consequences and comply with the changes that Brexit has caused!
COMPLICATED STUFF
As everyone has now found out, it has made travelling a little more complicated, bringing ‘stuff’ in, or sending ‘stuff’ out now takes longer and incurs taxes that didn’t exist before. Not to mention the changes of residency/property owning stays in Spain and Europe for expats.
One person who was on top of this from the very beginning was Anne Hernández. A feisty, retired university lecturer who decided that her communication abilities and her love of Spain would be the driving force behind the fledgling “Brexpats in Spain”.
We sat down for a coffee in a local country club near her home, as she told me how it all came about.
“My Mum, having already lost my Dad, moved out here and lived with me. Being of a certain age, she used to go to a club for expats and every week without fail, she would
come home with a phone number for me to call one of the elderly members of the club to help interpret at the doctors, to translate an official letter or to call a Spanish company etc. I did it because they didn’t have anybody like me at home to help. After many years of living on Spanish soil and, as President of my large community for nearly 20 years now, I knew how the Spanish systems worked and had made a group of professional friends who served as handy contacts in times of need; so I started a small group called Costahelp. In July, about one month after the Brexit Referendum, I had received so many earnest cries for help from these people who were telling me that Spain was going to chuck them out, that they had nowhere to go etc and I felt I needed to help them. I wasn’t a political animal and didn’t really know what to think so I spoke to the then Mayor of Mijas who advised me that in order to be able to collaborate with me on a professional level it would be best if I formed a fully legally constituted association and not just a Facebook group.
I took his advice and did just that, and Brexpats in Mijas was born. Again, within about one month, I had British residents asking me for help who lived in Alicante, the Canaries and other parts of Spain so I renamed the association Brexpats in Spain and I suppose, as they say, the rest is history.”
“It is not just a labour of love anymore, is it?” I asked. “I mean after all these years, which when you think about it is not a huge amount of time, you have been recognised by the late Queen Elizabeth II with an MBE. Not an honour that many expats in Spain receive.”

She chuckled proudly but modestly as she continued, “It has been so much more demanding than I could ever have imagined and having now retired from my career as a university lecturer, I have more time on my hands, thank goodness, because the demand still exists though somewhat differently now. I know I have been honoured for my services to the British in Spain but never in a million years would I have thought I would still be doing this seven years later nor did I ever imagine we would have achieved national and international recognition! It sometimes seems as though everybody knows who I am, but after the wonderful press we have been given, again I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised. What I am surprised at though, is the number of different questions that people ask, how Brexit has affected and continues to affect so many people in so many different ways. All these questions deserve answers so our close collaboration with the local authorities, town halls, Consulates and the British Embassy is important to us as is the advice and guidance from our group of professionals in such fields as legal, medical, insurance, financial, taxation, education, employment, property, driving etc all of whom are vetted by us which ensures that the information we are giving is correct.”
“You are still campaigning to better the system, aren’t you?” I asked while ordering another coffee.
“Well, we don’t protest in the street but we do campaign via our regular meetings with the Embassy and other relevant public authorities to defend our rights here and certainly to put right the wrongs often imposed as a result of misunderstanding either on behalf of Spain or the UK so it is safe to say we have our fingers on the button!”
“From personal experience, apart from knowing you, one cannot pick up a paper or go online without reading something about what you do and are involved in.”
Again, that contented but self-effacing smile, “We have seven Facebook groups and have now added the word ‘International’ to our name because the help we give is not just to the British; it is help to anybody who has or wants a connection to life in Spain. We now have 45,000+ members throughout Spain and the islands who all seem to seek our help in one way or another as yet another unexpected Brexit worm creeps out of the woodwork. We have also added another string to our bow called ‘Brexpats Buddies’. A free group we set-up for those who live alone and are worried about their well-being. They could have an accident or be taken ill and nobody would know. It happened to one lady which inspired us to start this spin-off group. All it requires is that members check-in each day via Whatsapp and if we don’t hear from them, we try to make contact. If we can’t, then we set the ball rolling to check that the person is okay.”

SOME OF THE EDITOR’S FAVOURITE EATING PLACES ON THE MIJAS COSTA.

One of my oldest colleagues and friends (in length of time as opposed to his age) Paul Tugwell has been Head Chef at this restaurant since he joined young Hungarian owners Viki and Atilla last year in their reformed restaurant Benavra in Torrenueva, just down the road from the popular supermarket on the corner. Simply designed but comfortable with a lovely patio and further seating on the front terrace, there is ample space.
The couple certainly have had sound experience, having worked on cruise liners and a boutique hotel in the UK. They did well when they persuaded Paul to join them as he has more than anyone’s fair share of top-quality experience, which started at the famous Savoy Hotel in the UK under one of the world’s renowned chefs at the time Silvino Trompetto. Experiences in country house Michelin starred establishments followed until his arrival in Spain, when he alongside other ambitious operators, started a food revival with the influence of Modern Mediterranean Cuisine.
Paul’s style is eclectic but with firm roots in his classic French culinary roots. I know his food well and admire his desire to constantly attempt new ideas yet not losing the art of good food and traditional methods.
Happily, the restaurant has taken off well and on a recent dinner with a good friend one day, I was lucky to get a table. Start with the wine, which is what we did, a chilled bottle of Albariño to slurp while we looked at the menu. For me the starter choice was simple, Tuna Tataki with Ponzu Mayo and Wasabi Infused Flying Fish Caviar . My friend made a beeline straight away for the Warm Breast of Duck with Cabbage, Pine-nut and Sultana Salad . Perfectly cooked tuna with a warm kick thanks to the wasabi. The breast of duck was of course cooked to perfection and the crispy salad was a perfect accompaniment.
Main courses were a bit more difficult as I didn’t want more fish and my friend was tempted by the Sea Bass with Wilted Spinach and a Pine-nut, Sultana and Vermouth sauce , but had already had sultanas and pine-nuts, so, having seen the quality of my tuna, chose Tuna Steak with a classic Salad Niçoise . I went for the Slow Braised Iberian Pork Cheeks served in a rich sauce with mustard mash and French beans.
Mouth melting stuff! All washed down with a very acceptable bottle of Ribera del Duero.
Portions are more than adequate, but cleverly designed so as you think, “Hmmm, I think can manage a pud!” So — we did. Sharing the warm Pear Tart with Vanilla Ice cream and a Baked Strawberry Cheesecake was the answer. Starters are around 7/8 € and mains only 14/15 € In fact, our dinner including two good bottles of wine and a couple of coffees to finish, was less than 100 € . As always in our case it’s the wine that doubles the bill. Worth every penny. Good, attentive friendly service, warm atmosphere and charming owners.
NB. Since my first meal at the restaurant I have returned several times and am pleased to see that the menus change regularly.

The rise of Chinese, Japanese and especially Thai restaurants over the years is amazing. There can’t be many people that have not tried one or all three styles, like them or not. Personally, I love all styles — but then I love all food — but I do hear some people say, ‘Well Chinese are all the same’, or, ‘Japanese? I can’t eat raw fish!’ and even, ‘Thai food is too spicy for me.’
Not with standing people’s tastes, it’s true that Chinese menus all seem similar, probably because they cater for Western palates. Those of us who have had the pleasure of eating Chinese in Hong Kong can vouch “It’s not all the same!” Japanese has plenty more than raw fish — as delicious as it is! And Thai comes in different strengths of ‘heat’: So, ‘you pays your money and takes your choice’. If you are not sure, then a visit to Pura Asia in La Cala may help you become a follower. This family-owned eatery has been there for some six years. As an Asiatic restaurant you get the opportunity to test the flavours and style you may have not ventured into before. I make no bones about the fact that I eat there as often as I am able and was extolling the virtues of Asiatic food to a friend who shamefully admitted that she had not really tried anything other than Chinese.
So, I set myself a challenge, lets get her to fall in love with a new cuisine! Typically, with the Asian work ethic, they open seven days a week from midday ‘til 11.30 last orders. For newbies take advantage of their lunchtime set menu. At 10.95 € for a three course menu, I promise you, you cannot go wrong. And as always in such a place, it is frequented by local European chefs and restaurant owners, as well as Spanish and expats. Lovely day, so we sat on the front terrace shaded with trees. You could choose the glass covered front of the restaurant or inside.
House wine is extremely drinkable and at 10 € a bottle represents excellent value. I persuaded my friend to try the Dim Sum (steamed pastry ball filled with minced pork and

or vegetables) I usually have their Seafood Salad chunks of squid, whole prawns, cooked mussels in a heavenly, spicy dressing. You could choose from a selection of five starters including Sushi Rolls , classic Spring Roll , and Thai Soup of the Day. Main courses offer a complete array including a classic Sizzling Beef
A brilliant Lemon Chicke n (I have tried it at home, but can’t get the lemon sauce as good as theirs) Prawn Gon Bao , spicy king prawn dish or Thai Chicken Red Curry. Choice of rice or noodles. I never eat desserts when I go to Chinese, or Indian but here I just love their cheesecake. It’s a simple Philly cheese base, but light and fluffy with a strawberry syrup. If you would rather go at night you can still have their really good evening menu with a few more options than lunchtime and still excellent value at 13.50 €
If that wasn’t enough, then if you go at night, you can choose one of their other set menus for 2/3/4 people still only 15.50 € to 16.5 € or choose from their ample a la carte. Fresh, vibrant and ample food, it really is worth a visit.
Also, my plan worked; my friend thoroughly enjoyed it and phoned me the next week and asked, “I’d like to go that fab restaurant again, can I take you??? ”

YOU’VE TRIED THE COWBOYS NOW TRY THE INDIANS
I remember that sign when I first visited the Calahonda area in the 90s’. It was on the wall of ‘Little India’ on the main Avenida de España in that major Urbanisation. The area was slightly fledgling in those days, and Singh was undoubtedly the first Indian restaurant in the area. Always seen with his signature turban, he has been dishing out Indian food to thousands of followers who enjoy his adapted westernised Indian food as well as more authentic, traditional dishes for those that appreciate good aromatic and spicy food.
Kanwaljeet Singh Sawhney was born in Bombay, now Mumbai and started his career at the Ashok Hotel in New Delhi, having passed his diploma in Hotel Management and Catering. After completing his training he took charge of the Frontier Restaurant as head chef, in the same hotel. He worked in central London for a few years before coming to the Costa del Sol to open an Indian restaurant as Consultant Chef for an Arab Sheikh in Benamara, Estepona. He then opened his own place in 1993 and the rest, as they, say...
Recently refurbished, gone are the flock wallpapers, dark Indian ambience which has been replaced by light walls and bright furnishings. In fact, apart from the unmistakable aromas of Indian herbs and spices, you could think you were in a modern brasserie.
It’s true, when I go to visit his restaurant, I just say “Feed me Singh” and I relish what he is going to prepare for me. I like spicy food, but I am really into combinations of herbs, aromatics and then spices; and, he does that well. Whilst the menu is aimed at westerners, after all that’s where we are, the aficionado will be able to pick out some crackers! Like Singh’s version of Kerala Prawn Chat , breadcrumbed and fried with diced onion, ginger and tamarind sauce. As to be expected, the ever-popular Samosas and Pakoras are there along with vegetarian options. Or if you are into sharing, choose the Assorted Appetisers. More vegetarian options with the array of vegetable and rice dishes. A selection of Biryanis and more Tandoori dishes than you can shake a Papadum at.
As I said, when I go, I usually ask the boss to tempt me with something different; on one visit, he gave me the chance to try his special whole Dorada with Tandoori spices . A perfectly cooked piece of fish with just the right amount of seasoning and spice. Selection of value for money wines and of course Indian beer. All the ingredients for a great Indian meal, but what sets Little India apart, is the quality of produce, the preparation, the flavours and of course the mine host, Singh! So, when you call into see him, send him our regards, he’ll look after you.

I have to admit that I have an affinity with this particular venue. Originally a saddlery and leather shop in the new development at La Cala of many years ago, it had its first restaurant operation some years ago in the shape of a franchise of a Spanish Tapas chain. Sadly, it was not successful. Then a British couple took it over and again couldn’t ‘cut the mustard’ despite their ambitions. I think it’s the perfect location in the village and the right size to be intimate yet buzzing; so, I was very pleased to see that, earlier this year, it was taken over by a group of professionals who have injected new life and atmosphere into the place. Heading the kitchen is a young man with a proven track record in fine dining and this is reflected in the quality and presentation — but not the prices.
Mathew Lee, hails from Australia but has paid his passage through some top kitchens in his home country as well as the UK and Madrid before coming to the Costa del Sol. Together with his co-proprietors, The Madi Group, a local consortium, they have designed an eclectic mix to their menu which heavily features Spanish gastronomy. But Mathew’s twists means that you can get a simple Jamón y Queso or choose from a selection of Spanish cheeses and Embutidos (chorizo, hams and cured meats).
However, look further and you can choose one of the ever-popular Carpaccio of Tuna or Carpaccio of Beef. If it’s tapas you want, then there is a great selection to order. His approach to be different continues with Scallops with Chorizo, superb. Follow that with the Smoked Salmon with Goat’s Cheese and Mustard and Honey Dressing. It was very subtle but this diner was totally thrown by what appeared
visually to be perfectly chopped pieces of tuna which turned out to be beetroot — my taste buds were thrown, but in a nice way! Everybody’s favourite, the ubiquitous mini burger is there with a selection which includes a Wagyu beef version. I went for a marinated Lamb Pincho (baby skewer) with a chimichurri sauce but other interesting selections are there: Crispy Cod with Caper Sauce, Homemade Croquettes with Boletus and Truffle, or the Wagyu Meat Balls with Oregano and Tomato Sauce: But this is not just a Tapas bar, there are more substantial dishes on offer, such as Angus Entrecôte with Baked Sweet Potato, Fillet of Pork with Jamón and Padron Peppers, Pulpo, Salmon, Seabass y más. Sweet teeth are not ignored either with a Red Berry Cheesecake, a Tiramsú or my favourite, a Chocolate Fondant.
Great selection of cocktails, spirits, wines, Champagnes and Cavas; the service is friendly and efficient leaving me to wonder how many of the front of house staff are co-proprietors. Prices reflect the quality, but in my opinion excellent value for money. Call in and say that we sent you and Matthew and his team will be happy to invite you to a glass of Cava.

JASON GODWIN CAME OVER TO SPAIN IN THE BEGINNING OF THE NINETIES.

In fact, that is when I first met him. I walked into a very good friend’s house to find this young man sweating over a newly installed computer, one of those things that most of us didn’t have, except, the wealthier and very business orientated; our mutual friend was one of those! Jason was a young geniuses that was to be part of the development of modern computer programming and technology. Especially on a Coast that had little in that way at the time. Oh yes, there were young, clever Spanish people at the top of their game, but Jason was the ‘English Speaking’ link.
Arriving from Glossop in the UK in 1992, it didn’t take long for a bright, enthusiastic entrepreneur with ambition, to make his mark. It didn’t take him long to find his niche and he got himself a job in IT with his new found friends and successful entrepreneurs Robert and Diane Atkin at their successful holiday and timeshare resort. He developed systems for their computer run accounts department and in between, was selling computers; mainly to ex-pats and of course installing and explaining to them the way that they could benefit from owning one.
In 1996 with the backing of his bosses he launched Mercury Internet. With premises in Elviria, Jason became the ‘go to’ for those needing advice and equipment. But in 1999 he launched what was to be an even more phenomenal success: InfoCasa. He created a software that allowed estate agencies to share properties online in a
safe and confidential environment. One hugely successful business is a feather in anyone’s cap, but then he turned a passion into a profit. He had met and fallen in love with Eli and they were looking for a new challenge, The Mayan Monkey.
The idea of the Mayan Monkey was to open a business together that would be fun for both of them and mean something. They set up their first prototype chocolate factory/shop. Eli was responsible for making the chocolates and Jason did what he does best — no, not eat the chocolate — but sell the product. That was in March of 2012.
They now run all sorts of different workshops. They operate two (soon to be three) locations in Mijas Pueblo, one of which is the actual chocolate factory which has a small museum as well.
They run demonstrations and teach people how to make the product. As said, the idea was to create something meaningful. They do this by the way they manufacture and obtain their supplies and pass on the art to children and families. They also make all their ice creams from scratch, which can only be described as Artisan.
Jason is showing me around the factory and shop area enthusiastically as showing off his ‘favourite child’.
“We make all the ice cream the hard, old-fashioned way, which no one does nowadays. For example, we roast the pistachios in the factory and then slowly
stone grind them for eight hours into a beautiful nut butter which we then infuse with the organic milk and cream. This is how ice cream was made 50 years ago,” he said proudly giving me a dollop to try. I nodded my agreement and happily accepted another scoop.
“Regarding the sourcing, we sadly, are the only chocolate factory recognised by the organisation slavefreechocolate.org .”
He continued to explain his ethos. “We don’t purchase any beans from the ivory coast (which is the single biggest producer of cacao in the world) with two million child slaves, with an average age of nine, working there today; and, even if you are not a slave, your average salary is just 54 cents per day. A tonne of cacao in the ivory coast today costs about 2,200$ in 1971 it cost (then) 5,500$: It’s crazy; that would be around 14,000$ with inflation today, which is similar to what we pay for it in the Dominican Republic and Ecuador where the farmers earn about 17$ per day, and” he confirms with confidence, “there are no slaves.”
Jason combines all that is good about an entrepreneur. Confidence, humour, product research and knowledge and ethics. He looks after his staff — who in turn look after him — and for someone who has known him a long time, I can vouch for his honesty and integrity and — on top of all that — he’s a thoroughly decent bloke!

La Cala was purchased by FBD (FBD Holdings plc is an Irish insurance company. Its primary listing is on the Euronext Dublin. It is one of Ireland’s largest property and casualty insurers looking after the insurance needs of farmers, private individuals and business owners through its principal subsidiary, FBD Insurance plc) its current owner, in the late 1980´s. Despite early difficulties and the difficult terrain, FBD, after having already invested in Sunset Beach Club in Benalmádena, decided to buy the complex with the intention of developing a 54-hole resort with its own hotel.
A 5km road was built from La Cala de Mijas village to the resort at a cost of circa £5 Millon, and, as part of this, three underground tunnels had to be built to facilitate local goat farmers to herd their goats. In addition, a bridge was built to connect the resort to Mijas to the north of the resort.
Some of the initial inspection surveys had been conducted from the air, so difficult was the terrain to view from ground level. At that time, American golf course architect Cabell B. Robinson had just left the famous Robert Trent Jones organisation and was keen to make a name for himself as a designer in his own right.

The first brick was laid in 1989 and this writer remembers driving for what seemed forever through the “non-existent at the time” Cala Hills to see what the fuss was about.
The two La Cala courses were Robinson’s first projects after 17 years of working with the Jones operation: He said, “At first I thought the terrain was the limit of what could be turned into golf courses, given the severe changes available in altitude. I remember looking at the whole estate and thinking, “I hope I know what I´m doing”. I knew I would have to move loads of earth and we ended up moving 500 thousand cubic metres. This is almost four times the amount that would be moved in flatter projects. Because of the amount of earth moved, La Cala
has playable golf courses that retain the spectacular, dramatic views that are hard to equal. Without wishing to sound arrogant, I´m still very proud of the work at La Cala.”
La Cala has also seen its share of famous golfers, such as Sergio Garcia, Danny Willet and Miguel Angel Jimenez, and in May 2017, the resort played host to the Spanish Masters on the European Challenge Tour.

A significant number of houses and holiday homes have been built on site since 2006 and in 2014, the FBD Group entered into a joint venture agreement with the British building company Taylor Wimpey Plc. In exchange for land, Taylor Wimpey embarked on an extensive property development in La Cala.
“Since its’ inception La Cala Golf Resort has seen many changes and improvements and recently remodernised it’s club house and is constantly striving to improve the customer experience. Several professional managers have been involved over the last 30 years but the new breed of management has an emphasis on Golf & lifestyle, and its place in the lucrative market.
The current Sales & Marketing Director is charming young Frenchman, Edouard des Fontaines who has spent many years in the ‘golf game’ some recently in the UK before joining the Team at La Cala in 2019. Along with the resort’s General Manager Sean Corte Real, they have steered the resort through Covid and out the other side. Sean Corte-Real, a widely travelled professional of the golf business has spent more than 23 years dedicated to the management of golf resorts with great international prestige. Both men take pride that their resort, a haven for golfers, now comprises of three 18 hole courses, Campo Asia (The first in 1989), Campo America and Campo Europa all three of which are open to the general public.
Apart from the golf, the resort offers the Hotel, three restaurants, club house, La Terraza with its’ panoramic bar and the Pool Bar. Also, to complete the perfect sport and leisure complex, a Racquets Club, with three courts including padel, tennis and squash. There is even a professional’s only football pitch.
Over a coffee with Edouard, he speaks with great pride about being involved in such a project, including their real estate programme creating luxury apartments for the holiday maker or to make your home in the south of Spain. I asked him what future plans they had for the resort?
“We started with the 60-unit apartment development at Miraval and it has morphed into five fully finished developments today, with a further 650 units planned in the next five years. La Cala now stands as one of the
biggest golf resorts in Spain and Europe, encompassing three championship golf courses, a 107- room Four Star superior hotel, a luxury Spa and extensive high-end holiday homes and property developments.
With over 400 hectares of which we have only used around 135, we can develop further and improve the resort to remain as the largest and most comprehensive resort in Spain.”
And who am I to argue with that. If you are moving here or just on holiday, take a look at what they have got to offer, play a round or two, have a swim or just sit around the terrace having lunch.

The Bureau was set up by prominent expat Myra Cecilia Azzopardi. Myra is a qualified paralegal and has had a wide experience of dealing with problems presented by living in a foreign country. Born into a forces’ family, Myra spent her childhood travelling and residing in various countries; this way of life continued into adulthood. Her own experience as a perpetual expatriate may have unconsciously directed her to pursue a career aimed at assisting the

This stalwart of UK society is the ‘goto-place’ for those needing help and advice on a multitude of problems. Those missing this ‘comfort blanket’ from home will be pleased to know that here, on the Costa del Sol, we have a Citizens Advice Bureau Spain.
Spanish expatriate community. After she attended Secondary School in Cyprus and a short stint at college in Wiltshire, Myra continued travelling, and then on to Ireland. Whilst dabbling in the music business, she was eventually taken on as an executive for Polygram, Dublin. A short time at Public Relations in Ireland and then off to Cologne, Germany, to work at a recording studio. After spells in various countries, she finally settled in Spain in 1993.
In 1995, and for a political party, Myra was asked to set out a list detailing the type of problems that the nonSpanish community and visitors were experiencing whilst in Spain. Using this and other information, the first office for foreigners was eventually set up in Estepona by the then, newly elected Government. This led to a profound involvement in four municipal elections, including being offered to stand as a councillor in the 2011 elections. Though tempted, Myra decided to stand down before the list was announced.
As a result of her experiences in aiding the expatriate community during various political campaigns, Myra became very involved in assisting and supporting the community who for many had little or no knowledge of the Spanish language and more importantly, the complex Spanish bureaucracy and the continual updating of the law and regulations.
A demand for a more extensive service concluded with Myra setting up the Costa Advice Bureau in 2006.During the following seven years, it became apparent that the expatriate community needed a place and persons to whom they could turn to for support. With this in mind, Myra commenced on a project to set up a group for the expatriate residents, non-residents and visitors alike, in need of advice, assistance, and accurate information. This and more, they can now find at the Citizens Advice Bureau Spain.

CITIZENS ADVICE BUREAU SPAIN
Whilst modelled on the Citizens Advice Bureau in the UK and Ireland in terms of giving free advice to everyone, the setup of CABS is, at least for now, a little different. CAB UK offices receive a large amount of funding from local authorities which, in turn, allows the setting up of offices in most towns and cities.

Citizens Advice Bureau Spain does not have access to this level of funding – in fact getting the project up and running was funded from Myra’s own pocket and any work done by her and the ‘head office’ team is voluntary. They would love to set up physical offices where you could just drop in, but for now, this is not possible.
In order to reach as many people as possible, the CAB have turned to technology, which has the advantage of being reasonably inexpensive to set up and can be accessed by everybody and from anywhere. The first public access to CAB Spain was set up on Facebook using a network of groups; there is also now a website www.citizensadvice.org.es
What Citizens Advice Bureau Spain aims to do is provide citizens with up-todate, unbiased and accurate information and advice. They have many articles, information and fact sheets covering the many different aspects of life in Spain. How to negotiate Spanish Bureaucracy,
Residency, Relocation, Medical Care, Tax, Pensions, Legal Matters, Documentation and many other areas are covered in their articles and are readily available to look at before asking a question, for which answers may be available on their website. Using the site ‘Search’ function will help you find what you need.
Their team of volunteers will also do their best to help with more complicated problems via the website’s ‘Ask for Advice’ section. Even as a charity they still have overheads and therefore those requesting any further assistance are asked to contribute by paying a 10€ donation for questions posted there.
CAB Spain is not intended to be a replacement for professional services and their advice may well be that you need to seek professional assistance. They can help you negotiate the dayto-day aspects of life in Spain but are not equipped to perform the functions of Lawyer, Accountant or Tax Advisor. THE ROLE OF THE POLICE
IN SPAIN
The first thing to remember is all police officers in Spain are armed. This doesn’t mean that it’s like the wild west (or Downton LA) out there, but bear in mind of the old saying, “don’t take a knife with you to a gunfight!” because you will lose. THE LOCAL POLICE are ostensibly the ‘local bobbies’. They are responsible for maintaining law an order in the towns and villages they serve. Traffic control, minor crimes, robberies, disturbance of the peace, drunk and disorderly etc. they are also used as evidence gatherers in the event of more serious occurrence which may well involve one of the other branches of the services.
POLICÍA NACIONAL (national police) is an armed civil force that deals with more serious crimes. Unlike the Local police who are overseen by town halls, the national police are managed by the Directorate General of Police and Civil Guard. You will often see them at roundabouts with their dark blue livery normally in what appears to be army fatigues with machine guns/automatic rifles slung over their shoulders. This sort of operation is normally looking for stolen vehicles, illegal immigrants, gangs of criminals and other nefarious activities.
THE GUARDIA CIVIL has been established since 1844, founded by Queen Elizabeth the second of Spain. This is very much an army, as most of them live in barracks and are seen on motorways with their green and cream livery and distinctive green uniforms. Speeding, drink driving and serious crime is their remit. Murders, unrest, political corruption et al all comes with the Guardia Civil territory.
ONE THING that is worth bearing in mind about all the police forces operating in Spain, is while they may look terrifying, they are polite and helpful even when you may have the misfortune to be arrested for whatever misdemeanour. BUT be polite back!
HEALTH CARE IN SPAIN
Spain has one of the best health systems in Europe: And contrary to folklore is free to anyone living and working on the Costa del Sol providing they are affiliated with residency and S1-form as a pensioner, employed or self- employed paying autonomo (self -employed stamp).
Each area has its own medical centre (Centro de Salud) - La Cala’s is inland near Aldi) just minute from the centre of town. To register with them, take your empadronamiento, your INSS affiliation letter and your residency card plus passport and you will be given your ‘personal’ doctor. Some of them speak good English. If you have the misfortune to have to go hospital then, depending what ailment, you may well be taken to the hospital Costa de Sol near Marbella which has an exceptional reputation. There are no large wards, you will share a two-bed room normally with a shared bathroom.
For those that prefer private healthcare there are many insurance companies in Spain and if for instance you are with someone like BUPA in the UK, you are probably covered here as well. If you are a holiday maker ensure you take out travel insurance and make sure you have an EHIC.
Pharmacies in Spain (Farmacia) are health professionals and are here to help for most minor ailments. The one in the centre of La Cala is a prime example of those ready to help.
WHATEVER QUERIES YOU HAVE THEY ARE THERE TO HELP
Mijas was the first area and town in the Costa del Sol and Spain to set up a Foreign Residents Department in 1985. It is a life line in many ways to newcomers to the Coast. English speaking (and other languages) attendants are there to answer your questions. The FRD in La Cala de Mijas is situated in the town hall building on the main boulevard. Their task is to help foreigners integrate with the local population and are there to help in any way they can. With more than 40% of residents in Mijas being foreigners, with some 100 nationalities, not all of whom speak sufficient Spanish to overcome some of the teething problems that newcomers face, the FRD is the place to seek help and advice in your language.
One of the most important tasks that the FRD can help you with is your Empadronamiento. (Putting yourself on the Register of residents) Contrary to some belief, the Empadronamiento is not a way of spying on you or keeping tracks, although it does of course have your details on file, it helps the local councils receive money from government to help service the resident population with such things as local police, health centre, townhall, street lights, bin collections and other things that town halls all over the world are responsible for. It also
allows you to vote in local elections, to register your kids in municipal schools, register a Spanish licence plate car or contract a mobile phone. So even if you rent and don’t buy for the time being, your registration on the padron contributes to the community and your fellow citizens. All you need is your NIE number, a valid passport/ID card, a copy of your rental contract or escritura (proof of purchase) and that’s it.
They are there to help you understand local laws, taxation, community contributions etc. They publish information on all their activities on line and in printed form so as you can keep abreast with life on the Costa, which, believe me, can help with your security and contentment while joining the community in this beautiful part of the world. They hold seminars on certain subjects, collaborate with the cultural walks programme “Mijas Secrets” organise language exchange workshops, charity markets and the famous International Christmas Show in December and are there to help you. I have a friend whose husband was seriously ill and she spent many a night in hospital with him, but mainly to keep him company and to stop him becoming depressed with his situation.
Your first stop — unless it’s an emergency — is your local health centre (Centro de Salud). If your doctor thinks you need hospitalisation, he will attend to it for you. If you are unlucky enough to need a hospital and are ‘lucky’ enough to live between Marbella and Fuengirola you may well find yourself at the Costa del Sol Hospital.
The hospital is on the main A-7 coast road 7km east of Marbella centre, and is one of the best-equipped hospitals in Spain. Inaugurated in December 1993, the hospital is run by Agencia Sanitaria Costa del Sol; a public company on behalf of the (SAS) Andalucian Health Service. It was set up as a pilot scheme to improve the efficiency and quality of services, under a modern structure or organisation. It has 400 beds, with an extension at present being built, and on average, around 100 healthy babies are born there every month. There are often voluntary interpreters on hand to help British and other nationalities communicate with the medical staff. With at least 15% of patients being non-Spanish speakers, this is considered a necessity for the smooth running of the hospital. Special resources are laid on in summer when the average number of emergencies increases from 140 to 355 a day.
It has a large out-patients department (on the coast road side of the building) and a 24 hour accident and emergency

department (on the mountain side of the building). In 2008 the extension was started that will, on completion, offer another 150 beds and a number of other specialist units. Work stopped in 2010 and restarted in 2019. Currently only part of the extension to be opened, is the underground car park.
Parking next to the hospital is severely
limited there is an open air, free public car park to the west of the building. The 1.000 place underground car park used to cost 2.10€ for the first hour and then 1.55€ per hour after that. However, in 2019 it became free and is expected to remain that way during the construction works of the hospital extension above the car park.
PRIVATE HOSPITALS NEARBY
If you have private health insurance then there are Private Hospitals on the Costa del Sol with 24 hour Emergency departments. Hospital Hospitén Estepona, and Hospital Quiron Marbella (formerly known as USP) and Xanit Hospital International in Benalmadena.
The Costa del Sol Health Agency is a public health organization that belongs to the Public Health System of the Junta de Andalucía integrated into the Ministry of Health and Families.
The Hospital Costa del Sol Public Company emerged in 1993 as a pilot project of the Ministry of Health to introduce different forms of health organization and management in Andalusia. The initial coverage population was 127,522 inhabitants, belonging to the municipalities of Benahavís, Casares, Estepona, Istán, Manilva, Marbella and Ojén.
In 1995 the municipalities of Mijas and Fuengirola were incorporated, adding a population of about 220,000 inhabitants. Since then, the population has been growing uninterrupted until it reaches more than
