What is dengue? The dengue virus is the causative agent of dengue fever (Dengue fever), also known as dengue. The virus is transmitted by mosquitoes that sting during the day.

What are the symptoms of dengue? The incuba�on period for the dengue virus is between 3-14 days, a�er a bite from an infected mosquito. The majority of dengue virus infec�ons progress without symptoms of illness. Nonserious dengue virus infec�ons are characterized by the following symptoms:

1. Sudden onset of fever (up to 41 degrees) with chills;

2. Headache, especially behind the eyes;

3. Muscle and joint pain;

4. General weakness

5. Nausea;

6. Vomi�ng;

7. Coughing;

8. Sore throat.

Non-serious dengue virus infec�ons recover a�er several days to a week. People can get dengue several �mes. A small propor�on of infec�ons develop into severe dengue with complica�ons. Without treatment, such complica�ons are life-threatening.

Infec�on: Infec�on with the dengue virus occurs through the bite of an infected mosquito, par�cularly the Aedes aegyp�.

Preven�on of dengue :

• Not being stung by mosquitoes: especially in the early morning and a�ernoon when the Aedes mosquito is ac�ve. Wearing covering clothes and oiling the skin. Sleeping under a mosquito net treated with an�mosquito repellent.

• Remove possible breeding sites: avoid standing water, remove waterlogged debris around living area.

• Have the living area sprayed regularly (BOG).

Treatment:

• In most cases, the disease passes on its own

• In case of fever, paracetamol is given.

• Drink plenty of fluids ( 3-4 liters of water per day)

When should you contact the doctor immediately?

• Severe abdominal pain

• Vomi�ng

• Abnormal bleeding, gum bleeding nose bleed, blood in the stool)

• Blue spots on the skin.
