Businessman shocks nation:

N

ot only will this year’s election go down in history, but so will the aftermath. The win for Republican Donald Trump has caused a divide in the United States--half the country supporting and reveling in his win and the other half completely devastated, afflicting the country with riots and protests.

More than a month after the fact, people are still in shock over the Trump triumph.

Before the election, polls indicated the first female Democratic nominee, Hillary Clinton, would be the most obvious choice for the presidency. She was touted to have the experience, eloquence and resilience to win, so people were completely taken aback when she did not.

“I’m kind of surprised that [Trump] won,” senior Kyle Sullivan said. “I really wasn’t expecting him to win some of the states. I feel that all of his supporters who went out and voted thought that Hillary was more of a shoe-in, so they were more pressured to vote for Trump.”

Donald Trump is a businessman, someone who has never been involved in politics before. That is part of his appeal to the American people. Many people agree with his foreign policy--particularly to fight and defeat the radical Islamic group ISIS--as well as his economic pledge to bring jobs back from foreign nations.

Trump supporters often say they feel he has the capability to bring about necessary change to disrupt the stagnancy in the federal government after eight years of Presi-

dent Obama.

“I am very glad that Trump won,” freshman Justin Nixon said. “I like his foreign policy. I like the fact that he is going to close off the borders to Syrian refugees because that’s going to bring terrorism to America.”

The borders closing has been controversial for a long time, and Trump bringing that controversy to light has won him many votes.

“We do need to get a lot of the illegals out of the country because they take good jobs,” sophomore Henry Godino said.

For many voters, it wasn’t a support of Trump that led to his election, but rather a disdain for Clinton. From the controversial Clinton Foundation to her misuse of a private email server, many felt Trump was the better choice.

“Hillary is a very bad person and needs to be in jail,” Godino said. “Really, Trump was the lesser of two evils, so I’m glad he won.”

Others still voted Trump out of allegiance to the tenets of the Republican Party-- for instance, desiring an end to abortion or an overhaul of the Affordable Care Act, which Trump has pledged to accomplish during his term and through his imminent nomination of a conservative Supreme Court justice.

“I [agree with the fact that] he is conservative and he’s Christian because I’m really

big on Jesus,” Godino said.

Whether or not the American people agree with all of Trump’s policies, it is undeniable that he will be inaugurated president on Jan. 20, 2017.

“I am very disappointed; however, part of me thinks this is what makes it all interesting,” science teacher Steven Russillo said.

“We could all go down a really bad road here, but I was wrong about this election so I hope I’m wrong about what kind of president he is going to be. I just wish that if it had been the other way around, we would get the same level of magnanimity from his side.”

America’s future is uncertain. Perhaps Trump’s business acumen and efficiency as an entrepreneur will improve the bureaucracy of the federal government. Or maybe his impulsive penchant for tweeting will get him in trouble, causing further division in America’s already fragile society.

Only time can tell.

NEWS Guilford County Schools: Where’s the money going?

L

ast year, the introduction of Say Yes to Education established that Guilford County is one of the poorest areas in the nation. And over the years, various budget cuts and an overall lack of money for Northwest has proven this statement true time and time again.

Currently, textbooks for most classes are more than a decade old. Math teacher Rhonda Hudson, among other teachers, has to send textbooks to the county for rebinding almost every other year because they are falling apart.

“Our textbooks are outdated,” Hudson said. “For my classes, they’re not aligned with the curriculum, and I have to pick and choose problems that are current.”

History books themselves are becoming history and science textbooks are virtually extinct, but even when teachers try to fill the gap between where textbooks left off and the recent events that take place through worksheets, the number of copies is restricted by the school’s budget.

“Since [AP] science classes were changed to one period, teachers don’t have enough copies or textbooks,” senior Casey Brannigan said. “There is twice the number of classes and students, but the same amount of supplies.”

Budget cuts could be the reason for this shortage.

“I’ve been using the same textbooks that

I used in high school, and we have to find our own ways to supply novels to students,” English teacher Alexander Wertz said. “Budget cuts in education in general are very apparent in the school system.”

Meanwhile, Guilford County Schools district leaders spent approximately $5.5 million last year on literacy materials from the American Reading Company. In an April 22 article from the News and Record, GCS Board of Education members reportedly “stressed the need for greater accountability for how the school system spends its resources.”

“Northwest opted out of the ARC program due to its scripted lesson plans; however, the resources it would have provided would have been the only new material provided for the English department in the past 10 years that I have been here,” English teacher Melanie Huynh-Duc said.

Moreover, several art programs, including chorus, band, theater and orchestra, are underfunded and are forced to fundraise in order to support themselves and replenish supplies and equipment throughout the year.

teacher Beth Herrick said. “A lot of supplies [the students] need, they have to provide on their own.”

A commonly held belief is that sports are getting a lot of the school’s money. However, this doesn’t appear to be the case; everyone has been hit by the pittance of money that the school receives.

Sports get around $10,000 dollars from the school system each year, which is spread throughout all the different school teams. It may sound like a lot, but according to athletic director John Hughes, it goes very quickly, funneling towards expenses such as transportation, referees and field maintenance.

Many of the sports teams have their own booster clubs in which they carry out fundraising to keep up with the costs of the team.

People also think that sports make a surplus of money from ticket sales and concession stands at games, but the teams typically struggle to break even. This financial burden stems from the fact that when a game is rescheduled because of weather, fewer people usually attend.

“That’s why athletic budgeting is very difficult,” Hughes said. “Because you literally can’t control the weather.”

In order to save money and give teachers the ability to interact with their students outside of school, Principal Ralph Kitley and Hughes decided to ask teachers to volunteer and manage the ticket gate at games, rather than paying parents. The experience has been a positive one in that a good deal of money has been saved, but it also shows some of the corners that need to be cut to make such a budget work.

Do students have trouble completing their summer reading assignments?

ecently, there has been a discussion among Northwest faculty members regarding whether or not summer reading should be given to students and if so, how to account for those who sign-up late.

“We enrolled almost 125 students this summer,” guidance counselor Stacy Garner said. “The concern that I brought from counselling was just making sure there was equity to access of the summer reading books.”

For many newly enrolled students, getting a chance to complete the summer reading assignment has proven to be difficult.

“Sometimes the little things, like getting a book, can be a big deal if you’ve just relocated across the country,” Garner said.

Northwest must also look towards future enrollments.

“The number of enrollments has been increasing,” principal Ralph Kitley said. “We’re getting more and more students each year.”

In addition, some faculty members feel that managing summer reading on top of moving to a new school is too much for a new enrollee.

“Certain people feel that it causes them unnecessary anxiety to have one more thing to do,” English teacher Alexander Wertz said.

However, English teachers have been understanding of circumstances and mostly give ample amounts of time.

“Most teachers have given these students an extended amount of time to complete the assignment necessary for summer reading,” English teacher Lora Medley said.

English teachers also feel that summer reading is an important component of keeping students’ skills sharp.

“The purpose of summer reading is to keep students’ reading skills up and to give teachers a basis for discussion at the beginning of the year,” English teacher Scott Walker said. “It is shown that students lose reading skills pretty rapidly if they don’t practice.”

Medley agrees.

“Our thoughts are if you’re reading [during the

summer], you’re at least keeping your brain active.”

The topic is not an entirely new one.

Ideas towards how to combat the stress of summer reading have been placed into action.

“A couple of years ago, the decision was made that we would go over and do lessons incorporating the book for the first week before we tested,” Wertz said. “I think those provisions have been put in place to allow all of the students to be successful.”

Currently, a decision has not been made regarding the topic.

“Right now it’s just a discussion,” Kitley said. “They’re several different perspectives on it and I don’t know if anything is going to change.”

Although there are various opinions on the topic, Kitley says that there are some common goals.

“I think the goals everyone agrees is to reduce the “summer slide” and have everyone read over the summer,” Kitley said. “But the discussion centers around if the summer reading assignments are the best way to approach it.”

Career Preparing students for the Classes: steps beyond high school Emma Fagerberg staff writer

H

igh school is all about preparing teens for the next step in life, and at Northwest, there are many options for young medical hopefuls. Classes such as early childhood development, health science and other classes in the medical studies are offered to aid such students.

“Through nursing fundamentals, I am able to go out and give vision screenings to elementary students as well as perform clinicals at nursing homes,” senior Emma Rust said.

Nursing fundamentals is a class that will help Rust in her goal of becoming a nurse practitioner—someone who is allowed to perform some medical procedures without the oversight of a medical doctor.

As well as doing vision screenings and

clinicals, students can qualify to be a certified nursing assistant, or CNA, if their grades comply. However, it is the general interest in medical science that drives most to take the course.

“I became interested in the medical field because I was sick for a long time, and I was also just good at memorizing everything,” Rust said.

Memorization and generally helping students in school is one thing that is seen by students and teachers alike when it comes to career classes.

“It certainly helps in terms of community service as well as helping them with psychology because of what they learn in class,” parenting and early childhood development teacher Kara Winicki said.

Another reason students take career-

based classes is for the general knowledge about life it offers.

“I see a blend of students interested in the medical field and those who plan to be parents [taking the courses],” Winicki said.

In early childhood development, a class taken by those interested in pediatrics, students get to experience working with children up to age five by visiting a daycare two days a week. And in its second year, the students in early childhood development alternate visiting an elementary school and daycare three times a week, which prepares students to work with younger children.

There are a variety of reasons for which a student may choose to take a career-centered class, and whatever the reason, it is seen by many around the school that these classes help students and are essential to Northwest.

orthwest hosts a variety of different students and staff from different backgrounds, cultures and economic classes.

Whether someone drives a 1990 Honda or the most recent Tesla, the kind of car parked in parking lots can tell a story of diversity.

It is often said that the students at Northwest have nicer cars than the teachers do, but just how many luxury cars are there? How many economy brand cars are in our parking lots?

Here is a condensed graph of just how many cars and of what brand regularly drive into school.

Millennials should not be blamed for society’s problems

M

any terms have been thrown out to describe our generation: the “highfive generation,” the “instant gratification generation” and, perhaps the most used name, the “Millennials.”

It’s a word that causes people above the age of forty to cringe in disapproval and worry. For reasons often unknown to us, we are to blame for everything gone wrong in the world. Facebook is teeming with articles describing how millennials are single-handedly ruining every industry imaginable in the world: the paper industry, the Olympics, the cereal industry and even bar soap.

According to Generation X, we are lazy and entitled. We are the scapegoat for everything they don’t like, and they justify their claims with rambling essays spelling out how we kill brands and industries, complaining about how we don’t work hard enough.

“Ultimately, you guys are the trophy generation,” environmental science teacher Terry Murphy said. “Everyone gets a [participation] trophy; no one gets to feel bad, and everything is set up for you to succeed.”

There’s another name: “the trophy generation.” Why is it that the generation that raised us, who taught us how to think and act, is the one that defines and criticizes us?

“I feel like they’re kind of jealous, maybe,” freshman Claire Halterman said. “Generation X didn’t have it [as easy growing up] as we do.”

Technology is one reason our lives seem so much easier than that of Generation X. From Google for research papers to text messaging for fast communication, it’s hard to imagine our lives without technology. But if one doesn’t understand how to use it to improve lives, it could be

seen as untrustworthy or unnecessary.

“Technology is probably the best invention ever,” senior Charles Cornelius said. “But some people just don’t understand it. They don’t understand how to use it to its fullest capabilities.”

With the world available at our fingertips, it’s understandable to think that our generation could be viewed as “lazy” because we don’t have to work as hard for information; it’s all in our pocket.

“If someone has done something one way for a long time, then, more often than not, they’ll think that way is the right way,” junior Josh Tilyard said. “So once someone tries to change it, then they’ll see it as wrong, even if it’s not necessarily wrong.”

Technological advances have improved our lives for the better in more ways than one. But just because getting information is easier doesn’t make it less worthy than before.

“We have to adapt to the society we live in now,” senior Ally Burcham said. “We can’t be dragged along by the previous generation’s ideals, because the times have changed.”

Times changing is what originally earned our generation the name “millennials.” We are the kids born at the turn of the century—the only generation completely saturated by smartphones and computers.

“When I hear [the word ‘millennial’], I think of time,” sophomore Timothy Heilig said. “I think of time going on, and on and on. It’s a century turned over.”

The more time that passes, the more things will change. This generation of young adults is more willing to adapt to the changes thrown at them than others before them. We are the most passionate about issues plaguing our society, and the most accepting of others around them. The value of the change we are looking for may be debatable, but the silver lining is we are trying. “[Millennials] are people who want to change what’s happening in society,” Tilyard said. “They want to change it to what they think is better, and they don’t always do that.”

Tilyard is one among many who does not want to make a value judgment of “good or bad.”

There are students on all sides of the spectrum, even those who lean more toward the “bad” side.

Good or bad, millennials are a generation of change makers, and in a society constantly changing, this is a good thing. The economy will continue to go up and down, technology will always evolve, and generations after us will get bullied by generations above them. Life is constantly changing. The question is: are you willing to change with it?

T

echnology has always gone handin-hand with education. The first supercomputers were developed at colleges and universities, and these institutions created many of the innovations that we all enjoy today.

Recently, however, it seems as if the middle school has surpassed us in this field.

During the summer, Guilford County used a federal grant to purchase a laptop computer for every middle-schooler in the county.

“These devices were purchased by the county, so we own them,” Northwest Middle School Media Specialist Patty Stringer said. “Essentially, it’s a mini laptop with Microsoft tools on it. It’s more intuitive for students to use.”

These came as a replacement to the slightly controversial tablet program, which was scrapped due to lack of functionality and shoddy quality. Teachers generally agree that the laptops are significantly better than the tablet disaster, and these new devices open a great deal of doors for students and educators.

“Lots of the teachers are building their courses in Canvas, which is a learning management system,” Stringer said. “A teacher can set up a class in Canvas, where they can post assignments, docs, videos, links to sites; all of this can be embedded in the program. Also, Canvas is fully embedded with PowerSchool, so it’s all one large learning management system.”

to tap into powerful new technology to aid their learning, but it also requires that every student has access to a laptop. Due to this, a completely connected learning environment may not be in the cards for Northwest High School. The initial setup alone for the middle school’s devices took almost the entire summer, and that’s for a school half of the size of the high school.

“It’s a logistical nightmare sometimes, and it requires a lot of front end work on part of the media specialist, county and tech specialist,” Stringer said.

Processing in itself can be a roadblock for the entire idea, and that’s barring the issue of cost.

“Making it work at the high school would require an incredible amount of funding,” Stringer said. “The reality is that at the beginning of the year I had 1,000 laptops to process, and technology services had to process them before I did.”

The idea of the high school providing devices for students remains possible; however, the sheer size of Northwest might bar anything on the scale of laptops for students.

“I think there are too many students for [laptops to be provided],” senior Nicole Hughes said. “I went to a small school, so it worked out there.”

Still, there must be areas in which the high school can improve its technological capabilities. There is no Wi-Fi for students, limited access or integration with existing computers and a dire lack of devices for teachers made since before students were born. Students agree technology has a major impact on learning.

ogy and is able to learn better with technology,” freshman Alec Barnes said.

Teachers are trying to integrate technology into lesson plans, but their efforts are cut short by Northwest’s technology shortage. Better connectivity at the school is a necessity that the high school has ignored for far too long.

“We need Wi-Fi because when teachers ask us to use phones in class, not everyone has a smartphone, and some people can’t use data,” sophomore Sarah Long said.

Students already need access to many of these things- primarily Wi-Fi connectivity- for classes, but this is nowhere in sight.

Clearly something must change, whether it be at the school, county or federal level.

In 2016, there’s no reason that students should be shut out of modern learning advancements in a high school.

“I think we’re doing a real disservice to students if we don’t give them the opportunity [to use 21st century skills],” Stringer said.

F

rom the quiet thwap of a bow to the fresh smell of gunpowder from a rifle, hunting has been deeply rooted in American tradition. Today, however, a vast decline in the amount of hunters in the United States is apparent, with only a staggering six percent of the population who still continues to practice this American pasttime. With an increasing disregard for natural selection in our sheltered society, what defines an animal’s rights has gone far beyond reason among the country’s population.

What exactly makes hunting a valuable practice?

There are a few reasons, and the most critical is population control.

“The early 20th century saw the decline of deer predator populations,” senior Drew Coleman said.

“Because of this, deer populations skyrocketed, and when their environments could no longer sustain them, the deer usually starved to death. The goal of ‘nuisance hunting’ is to control the population of overpopulating species.”

While many argue that hunting does very little to help control the populations of game animals, they tend to forget that the most commonly hunted gender in the same species is the male.

Game species tend to not maintain monogamous relationships, and this behavior renders the hunting of solely male organisms useless; by the time an adult buck is shot, it could have already mated with

and impregnated multiple doe. In following the correct hunting protocol, hunting the female of each game species can help in controlling their populations by eliminating the possibility of replacement offspring.

Hunting not only provides a method for population control, but it also greatly bolsters the economy. Although six percent of the U.S. population is composed of hunters, they bring around $8 billion dollars per day during hunting season.

With modern

hunting’s pricey expenses, such as meals, lodging, ammunition, licenses and taxes, the hunting community does nothing but present itself as an asset by pumping large sums of money into its local economies.

Due to the large amount of money that the hunting community spends annually, a large portion of that sum is available to be used for environmental purposes, such as the improvement of outdoor trails and campsites and the preservation of natural land.

Some people also forget that there are those in Alaska and some in the northernmost states that do actually still hunt to feed their families So, any extra regulations limiting hunting could have a detrimental effect on the way people conduct their lives.

uzz! The bell rings; another day of school begins. As students start heading to their classes, looking at body language and facial expressions, one can interpret if they like the teacher and subject they’re heading to or not. Some students slug along like a snail trying to be as late to the class as possible without being counted tardy, while others rush to be one of the first students in the class, eager to begin a new day of learning.

“There seems to be two types of teachers at Northwest: those who are passionate about their subject, and those that are just here for the paycheck and barely teach,” sophomore Scott Smith.

Every teaching style differs based on experience level, previous teaching settings and various strategies that are used.

“It’s annoying when teachers use PowerPoints or busy work because it is hard to get anything out of it; we don’t comprehend the information [when] we’re just reading it off a screen,” senior Catherine Gray said. “We could utilize that time better and do handson activities to better understand the information. Teachers need to cater to everyone’s learning styles.”

When teachers are enthusiastic about

their subject, the atmosphere in the class changes and students become more engaged and attentive.

But, every student differs—some are interested in school and want to attend college, while others are counting down the days until they turn 16 years old and can legally drop out.

Teachers can become so wrapped up in trying to cram all the information in their students’ heads and prepare them for the mandatory standardized test. At the end of the year they will forget that we’re humans.

We have outside forces that affect our attitude, emotions and drive to excel in classes.

“When I student-taught, what I really learned more than anything else was how important it is to build relationships with students,” social studies teacher Greg Shue, who won Teacher of the Year in 2010, said.

“Let them know that you’re concerned about them on a more personal level; it is not just about classroom academics.”

Creating a bond with students can help encourage students and make them feel supported. Everyone has good and bad days; having a teacher notice and come talk to you can be uplifting, reminding you that you’re being looked out for and cared for.

Teaching styles can determine how a student’s high school experience will play out.

The classroom environment and a teacher’s attitude can affect whether a student excels and enjoys the class or dreads going to that period every day. Teaching is an art, and everyone interprets art differently.

n schools all over the country, everyone learns the basics of sex: a relationship should be between one man and one woman and people should wait until marriage. However, in today’s world, one must ask if teaching to these criteria are still adequate.

In the past few years, sexuality has been more widely talked about than ever. Samesex marriage has been legalized, celebrities come out daily and, overall, society in the United States has been becoming more accepting of homosexuality.

As of 2012, around four percent of the United States population came out saying they identified as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender, or LGBT for short. Now, some may argue that teaching to four percent is a waste of time for the other 96 percent but some strongly argue otherwise.

“I think [teaching sexuality] is important because there are people who aren’t straight and that’s the only kind of sex that’s talked about,” sophomore Gabrielle Bueche said.

Another argument for teaching sexuality as a part of sex education in schools is that it may encourage people to explore their own sexuality as well as being generally educated about people of other sexualities.

“Sexuality shouldn’t be considered such a bad thing,” Bueche said. “Your sexuality is who you love and who you care about and it shouldn’t matter to other people.”

Along with that, it is important for everyone to know how to practice safe sex, not just heterosexual people. While pregnancy may not be a concern for most people in the LGBT community, STIs or STDs--sexually transmitted infections or diseases-- can affect anyone, regardless of sexuality or gender.

“Practicing safe sex isn’t only to prevent pregnancy but also to prevent STDs, which can be passed to people whether you’re straight or not,” senior Echo McLachlan said.

Though there are many reasons to add sexuality to sex-ed classes in schools, there are also a handful of reasons not to do so.

Such arguments include personal discovery of sexuality and the complication of teaching what is considered a confusing topic.

“I don’t think it should be taught about,” sophomore Henry Godino said. “There are so many [sexualities and genders] and sometimes it doesn’t make a lot of sense.”

Because sexuality is a rising and controversial issue, it will be talked about more often in schools and the argument will still continue about sexuality in sex-ed.

“You do you, but I think it is too much for schools right now,” Godino said.

At a time in their lives where hormones are through the roof and many are developing into their bodies and undergoing puberty, teenagers often face the idea of sex. Should they do it? What are some of the risks? Will their health be jeopardized? To answer some of these questions, we sat down with Northwest’s school nurse, Livi Shepherd Gray.

Q: What do you think are some of the risks of being sexually active in high school?

A: Obviously pregnancy, STDs and emotional issues. Most of it are the two top ones, STDs and pregnancy. There are lot of different things that can go into it.

Q: What resources are available to students regarding sex?

A: There’s the health department, there’s Planned Parenthood, they can come talk to me and, if they feel comfortable, they should talk to their parents, which is usually the best thing as far as getting proper information.

[Students can go to] their doctor. If you are a sexually active [female], you probably should be going to a gynecologist; they have a lot of resources there, as well.

Q: What factors should go into a student deciding whether or not they should be sexually active?

A: It’s definitely a personal decision. They should really think long and hard about the consequences of having sex at a young age.

Hopefully they’re careful, they don’t get an STD and they don’t get pregnant. Those are the two major things [and] they’re always a possibility, even if you do use a condom.

They should talk to a trusted adult first and try to make the right, safest decisions they can make, so that they can handle being sexually active. What I tell the students [to whom] I teach puberty [is], if you can’t put a roof over your head, pay for shoes on your feet, and the food that you eat, then you have no business being a parent.

“I don’t think most people fall in love when they’re 15; you don’t really know when you’re that young. I don’t necessarily think you should wait until marriage, but you should know it’s the right person.”

FC Bayern Youth: Northwest students kick it on recreational soccer team

ne team. 12 boys. One undefeated season. These are all components of FC Bayern Youth, a recreational soccer team created by students at Northwest.

Northwest junior Nico Rotundo, along with 11 other juniors at Northwest, decided to create a recreational soccer team.

“We were all playing FIFA together and thought ‘what if we did this in real life?’”

Rotundo said. “We found an organization that would accept us and turned our virtual team into a real-life team. We were playing these last years, and we figured it’d be fun to make an official team, so we did.”

Unlike most recreational teams, FC Bay-

ern Youth is very selective. Players are only allowed onto the team through invitation.

“You can’t just sign up to be on the team; you have to be invited,” Rotundo said.

The players have had success playing together here and there in the past, and it has been no different this season.

“We are undefeated this season, we were undefeated last season and we were undefeated the season before,” Rotundo said.

“We are a really strong team in that respect.”

Attributed to the team’s closeness and their excess of experience together, the team tends to win by a margin of 15-1.

“It’s not even a competition,” junior Will Harger said.

“We demolish [the other teams we play],” junior Eric Miller added.

When speaking with the players, it felt like being in a one-act play of soccer banter.

Rotundo: “We are a really aggressive team

on the pitch; we don’t hold back anything.

We leave it all out there every game [and] we get a lot of complaints.”

Miller: “[The organization] wanted to split our team up after the first game.”

Harger: “We said no, or else we were all gonna quit. They didn’t split us up.”

The banter then turned into a play-byplay of the team’s players-something straight out of a sports news segment.

Harger: “Let’s start with our goal keeper [junior] Spencer [Watts]; he’s an absolute wall.”

Rotundo: “[Watts has] had two penalty saves this season.”

Harger: “Moving on to our back line, we got Nolan Kessel, an absolute freak ginger on the field. Noah Lohr, center back, has got the dreads. He scares everybody. Finley [Skelton] has got a British accent, that’s enough. We throw [Ryan] Fritzy back there,

and he’s solid. He probably has a better SAT score than all of us. Then at center mid, we’ve got Ryan Boals, Nico [Rotundo] and Ian [Lewis], absolute freaks on the field.”

Rotundo: “Zach Cox has those crosscountry lungs; he just runs up and down the pitch. His endurance is through the roof.

Parker Byrd’s calves shook the earth when he arrived.”

Harger: “He scored in his first touch in his first game.”

On defending the goal, Rotundo believes the team surpasses their opponents.

“Our defense is absolutely top notch,” Rotundo said. “You know the wall that Trump wants to build? It’s like that.”

The players really enjoy getting to play together and win while doing so.

“It’s been a great all-around experience,” Rotundo said. “Out of everything I’ve done in school, I’ve probably peaked doing this.”

A brief passing: Athletes reflect on freshman to senior year

rowing up. A concept all kids and teenagers strive to get past, yet they do not realize that they should enjoy high school while it lasts.

High school students participate in sports to become a well-rounded scholar and to stand out on college applications, as well as to make connections in the sports they play. Playing sports allows for student athletes to make responsible decisions.

Valuable experiences are also an important part of playing a high school sport.

Some teams might have different goals or achievements they want to accomplish.

“My best experience on the soccer team was this past year,” senior Jackson Kessel said. “Winning conference and going out on top was really rewarding.”

Senior basketball player Kyle Sullivan has had similar experiences, but he said he has not yet experienced his last season as a Viking.

“The state tournament last year was my best experience on the team,” Sullivan said.

“Being able to hang out together [was a great experience].”

Among the important skills playing athletics provides, Sullivan points out that workload differs from freshman to senior

year. Any adjustments a student makes should help him/her become academically successful.

“Playing really helps with time management,” Sullivan said. “You really have to crack down and [that] makes you more responsible for getting your stuff done during the day.”

The pressure is soon sitting upon juniors and under classmen when they realize that their senior year is quickly approaching, and they will eventually be leaving high school. Athletes, such as Sullivan, have realized that.

“When we lost last year, I didn’t think it would be the end because I knew I had another year,” Sullivan said. “But this year is that year.”

As juniors realize how close graduation is, they have a whole new mentality towards their final year of athletics.

“I mostly improved this year because I took it more seriously this year,” junior Jeremy Pitter said. “I’m going to play harder for my last year.”

SPORTS Nick Thompson named top sophomore boys’ runner in North Carolina

eing first in a race is one thing. Being first in the state is another.

Sophomore Nick Thompson has been named the top boys’ sophomore runner of 2016 in the state of North Carolina for the 5K race by NC Runners Milesplit.

“I started running at the beginning of last year,” Thompson said. “I didn’t really start taking it seriously until I [consistently] got top seven at the races last year.”

Thompson started training over the summer after he realized how well he could do.

“I honestly thought that maybe during the next race someone would take top seven from me,” Thompson said. “But they didn’t.

I ran hard in meets, but I didn’t really try at practice, so I definitely could have been a lot better.”

That was not the case this year. Thompson ran a time of 16:10 at a meet in Charlotte, averaging nearly five minutes, 13 seconds per mile. This is his personal record, and he hopes to keep getting better in the future.

According to Thompson, the best part of being on the team is meeting new people and making new friends.

“Being good makes it fun, but my favorite part of [being on Cross Country] is all of the friends and people I’m around,” Thompson said. “Even if I wasn’t fast, I would still have a lot of fun with everyone who is on the team.”

Another one of his favorite things is the trips that they take. Including when the top 25 boys and girls went to Charlotte.

“Charlotte was my favorite trip because I ran pretty [well] there,” Thompson said.

“Then we went to Scarowinds, and we had a lot of fun.”

Despite being one of Northwest’s best runners, he still makes time for school and having fun with friends. He says that running hasn’t changed him that much.

“I still love to hang out with friends and do fun stuff with other people,” Thomp-

son said. “I don’t think that running has changed my life because I still try to have fun and not fill my free time with only practice” With the Cross country season just ending, Thompson is planning on taking a month and a half off before he participates in indoor track. Then, he will join outdoor track in the spring as a distance runner.

As for his success so far this year, Thompson thanks everyone who has gotten him to where he is now.

“I just want to give a shout-out to my mom, my dad [and] my coaches for helping me,” Thompson said. “I just want to say thank you, and God is good.”

T

he first things that come to mind when mentioning musicians often include long hair, a ridiculous amount of creativity and the background to a vocalist exerting more talent by the second, but to many, the instrumental tracks are anything but a background beat.

“Listening to my favorite bands made me want to start playing guitar,” senior Fernando Del Angel said. “I thought the instrument sounded amazing.”

Del Angel has been playing guitar for three years. He hopes to one day be in a successful band.

“With the guitar you can develop your own style and tone,” Del Angel said. “It’s all up to you, the player.”

According to Statista.com, as of 2010, a total of 18.08 million people were reported to play an instrument, with one in every five people play the guitar.

Many credit bands like Van Halen, AC/ DC, Blink-182 and even the songs they hear on the radio or in commercial breaks for their interest in playing the guitar. They also cite the “rush” that comes with learning something new on the instrument for why

they chose to continue playing.

Many Northwest faculty members play guitar, such as social studies teacher Jim Thompson and science teacher Steven Russillo.

“I really just picked [the guitar] up and mimicked songs I heard in commercials and on the radio,” Russillo said. “It was, and remains, very cool to be able to make sounds and music just like what I heard.”

Russillo has been playing the guitar since sophomore year of high school, “noodles” on the keyboard, plays the piano and has been known to beat-box since the ‘70s.

“I often wonder where those ‘roads not taken’ would have led” Russillo said.

Most musicians agree that there was never a “big switch” into music, but rather something they grew into or picked up with time.

“I grew up listening to rock music my whole life. It was always something I had an interest in,” Del Angel said.

Aside from band and orchestra, Guitar Club at Northwest currently consists of around 10 to 12 students who meet every Monday after school.

club, David Lambert, said that he started guitar club because a few of his students were very passionate about music and asked him to start a club in which they can express themselves through guitar. When it started, it consisted of a regular 20 students that attended each week.

“We had [two separate rooms]; one for acoustic guitar and the other for electric where all the loud noise came from,” Lambert said.

Although Lambert does not know how to play the guitar himself, he admits to have always had an interest in the craft and having had every intention of learning.

“When [guitar club] started, I would bring a guitar in to learn with the students, but someone would always end up borrowing it so I never got around to [learning],” Lambert said. “It’s nice to see these kids coming in and helping each other.”

Many students at Northwest carry their guitars around school in cases, while others find time to play between classes.

“Playing an instrument in a non-musical class can be distracting, but I don’t think there’s anything wrong with playing outside of class,” sophomore Gabrielle Bueche said.

and an occasional participant in Guitar Club, Bueche also has a collection of instruments under her belt. She plays the synthesizer, ukulele and the piano.

But it doesn’t stop at guitar; those with time invested in an instrument more often than not find themselves picking up more for the fun of it, or simply because of joy that comes with the accomplishment of learning the craft.

Del Angel said that he wants to learn to play the piano, violin, drums, bass guitar, trumpet and possibly the saxophone. Meanwhile, Bueche is attempting to fix her dad’s tenor saxophone, looking into harps with her mom and just signed up for fiddling lessons. “[Most people in band] play at least three instruments, and I decided that I’d like to expand my learning circle as well,” Bueche said.

With a broad selection to choose from, Russillo encourages anyone aspiring to play an instrument to start as long as the player is willing to put in the time and effort that accompanies the craft.

“Start playing. It’s literally as simple as that,” Russillo said. “Go get an instrument, pick the thing up and make noises with it.”

UGG Boots: Marching their way out of style Anna Yang & Ragad Alsaid staff writers

A

s the temperature drops, people start bringing out their boots--a clear sign that winter has come.

Uggs used to be the footwear of choice, but in recent years, their popularity has been declining.

“They are all big and clunky and too expensive,” freshman Shelby Lester said. “People buy a pair just for the name brand.”

Lester also points out that there are other alternatives.

“You can get a pair of [other] boots for $20 compared to a pair [of Uggs] for $120,” Lester said.

However, there are some students who stand by their Uggs purchase.

“Although they are really expensive, they are good boots and good quality,” freshman Zoe Simon said. “They are definitely worth it.”

The history of Uggs started in California in the late 1970s.

Brian Smith, the creator, says the inspiration for his sheepskin boots centered around the relaxed California lifestyle.

By the mid-1980s, UGG boots had begun to gain momentum and became popular among celebrities.

Oprah Winfrey announced on her show, “I never need any convincing to wear comfy, warm UGG boots.”

However, the Oprah Winfrey show has been canceled, and it seems Uggs are also on the way out.

When polled, most Northwest students reported they did not own any. Of 50 students interviewed, only 17 owned one or more pairs of Uggs.

UGGs became popular among celebrities like Kate Hudson, Cameron Diaz and Ashley Tisdale.

‘Tis the season of celebration: Other holidays celebrated in December Faith Rickerts news editor

ith radio stations playing Christmas music day and night, Christmas lights hung on nearly every house and Rudolph’s antlers and bright red nose proudly displayed on the hoods of cars, it’s not hard to tell that Christmas is almost upon us.

Most Americans celebrate Christmas—about 90 percent, in fact.

This statistic is most likely why we hear and see Christmasthemed everything starting around November.

However, Christmas is not the only holiday in December. Far from it, in fact.

Kids across the country grew up learning about Hanukkah, Kwanza and, of course, Christmas, but what other holidays are there?

When do they start, and who celebrates them? Here is a condensed list of December holidays, and what you need to know about them.

St. Nicholas Day: Before Santa Claus, there was Saint Nicholas. This holiday is most commonly celebrated across Europe, and is where many Christmas traditions stemmed from.

Day of the Holy Innocents: This holiday is celebrated in Mexico, and is similar to America’s April Fool’s Day. People will play pranks or jokes on friends and family, and

even the media will report outlandish stories in spirit of the holiday. There are also people who will visit cemeteries and give offerings to the souls of deceased children to honor a Hispanic tradition.

Yule: This is one of the oldest winter celebrations known to man. Pagans celebrate the rebirth of the sun and the beginning of winter, which also marks the day of the winter solstice. Today, traditional Yule celebrations include lighting candles, hosting bonfires and feasts and decorating homes.

Emperor’s BirthdayCelebrated annually in Japan every December 23rd, the Emperor’s Birthday is a national holiday in honor of the current emperor, Akihito.

This is one of only two days that the imperial palace is open to the public. Citizens visit the palace and greet the emperor and empress on the balcony with Japanese flags and cheers called ‘banzai’.

Day of Reconciliation- December 16th is a day of unity for the country of South Africa, as t recognizes the end of apartheid.

Feats of St. Ambrose- The northern Italian city of Milan takes every December 7th off in order to celebrate the feast of its patron saint, Ambrose. A special church service is held at the Basilica of Saint Abrogio.

And the ‘oh Bej! Oh Bej!’ street Market is opened up with multitudes of local foods, drinks and arts.

Marching band rises to the occasion

O

ne hundred and forty students.

One band. One sound. The Northwest Guilford Viking Band rose to the occasion this year with accomplishments ranging from being ranked 12th in a national regional competition to having one of the biggest fundraisers in its history.

The band has grown over the years with the shows becoming more complicated, the music becoming more difficult and the parents becoming more involved. Starting as a local band, they traditionally have won every local competition. With the band now competing in its fourth year of BOA (Bands of America) competitions, the band was exposed to bands across the nation.

“When we switched to BOA, we went from winning every competition to going against bands we’ve never seen before,” Northwest Guilford Viking Band parent Beth Rickerts said. “McMath wanted to challenge the kids because when you’re always winning, you get complacent.”

This year, the band traveled to Winston Salem to participate in Bands of America.

Bands of America is an organization that

promotes and organizes marching band competitions for high school students. Competitions include both regional and super re-

gional championships, as well as the Grand National Championships.

The band had to wake up at 4 a.m. Oct. 15 to compete against more than 20 bands from across the U.S. "The students are willing to do what they've been asked to do," band director Brian McMath said. " They've always trusted the staff."

They received division one rating and placed 12th out of 28 bands. The band placed right behind national semifinalists, South Carolina champions, Georgia champions, Virginia champions and Tennessee champions.

"I feel through the years, everyone figured out how to workout tension, " senior Marissa Calcaterra said. “We’ve learned to work with one another and [relax when we] perform."

The band has also done well in other competitions, winning awards such as first place color guard, first place visual performance, first place general effect and first place percussion.

“I’m glad the kids, the community and the school are enjoying it” McMath said.

“Next year should be fun.”

aledictorian.

Being number one. The title carries the image of ultimate stress and competition, but seniors Mallory Maurer and Elisabeth Molnar shatter this stereotype.

Maurer and Molnar have been best friends for six years and are both tied for valedictorian, but they don’t handle the competition like one may think. “[Elisabeth and I] don’t really think about it very much because neither of us tried to be valedictorian,” Maurer said. “We just took the classes we wanted to take, and it happened to be that we were valedictorian.”

Some may picture that an aspiring valedictorian has always had the childhood dream of being top of their class, but Maurer and Molnar being valedictorian just happened at the end of their high school journey.

“It’s cool, but it’s not the end all be all,” Molnar said.

Not only did they not stress out over becoming valedictorian, but now they don’t compete for it. “[Elisabeth and I are] both kind of chill about it. Neither of us tries to sabotage the other one,” Maurer said. “We’re just trying to get A’s in the classes we are taking.”

Although, Maurer and Molnar are not competing with each other, they do still experience the pressure of being number one out of 500-plus students.

Having already been told they are first, Maurer and Molnar also feel pressure to maintain the honor.

“I don’t want to not be first because I’m already first, but also I have no problem being second,” Maurer said.

The pressure to stay first forces Maurer and Molnar to set themselves apart from other seniors. “[Mallory and I] still have to take hard classes this year. I do feel like I have to take the APs to keep up with first rank,” Molnar said.

Because Maurer and Molnar have to take APs, they have had little ability to choose classes they wish to take.

“I would have liked to taken art or CP German; [however], I can’t take CP German this year because I might be interested in the subject, but it would bring down my GPA,” Molnar said.

While most seniors take up a load of easier classes, that is not how Molnar and Maurer handled their senior year; instead, they continue taking hard classes to maintain the highest GPA. The traditional senioritis that most seniors experience is not an option for Maurer and Molnar.

There teachers additionally see Maurer and Molnar’s hard work and high academic performance in their classrooms.

De-stress for the new year Angela Seo staff writer

Y

ou sit at your desk, hands on your head as you see not only the pile of assignments growing, but a huge headache growing as well.

Stress. It seems to follow you around everywhere, but don’t worry, you’re not alone.

As the new semester moves closer, many Northwest students discuss the ways they cope with stress.

A popular way to de-stress is to listen to music. Music gives a chance for students to escape from reality and lets them relax as they submerge themselves into a vast variety of genres, ranging from classical to hip hop.

Listening to music that you love can actually lower blood-pressure and fill your brain with dopamine, a brain chemical that increases pleasure, according to PsychCentral.

“As soon as you get home, you can play like really chill music and just sit there to calm yourself,” sophomore Kendra Galloway said. “I like listening to Kendrick Lamar and James Bay, for sure.”

Another way to cope with stress that many students seem to enjoy is to take a break from work and use electronic devices.

Play your favorite video game or watch TV, like freshman Jacob England who enjoys watching “Arrow” and senior Lian Maxwell who enjoys watching “New Girl.” However, keep in mind that smartphones can lead to more stress according to a study by the University of Gothenburg in Sweden, which revealed the constant need to check your phone increases dependence on it, causing anxiety instead of relieving stress. Also, make sure to take frequent breaks from the screen as it can lead to sleeplessness.

Go outside. Take a drive, like senior Daniel Fergus. Exercise, like freshman Kyndall Cherry and Justin Porass to help reduce stress. Studies show that physical activity can help reduce stress by bumping up the production of endorphins, feel-good neurotransmitters in your brain. Even a short ten minute walk can make a difference.

Another great way to reduce stress is spend time with friends. Friends can be positively supportive, and laughing at jokes with friends can increase your intake of oxygen, leading to increased levels of endorphins.

“Every weekend [my friends and I] get together and just hang out and have fun,” freshman Alexandra Vlad said. “We usually watch movies at someone’s house.”

Another stress-reducer is sleep. If you’re

not getting enough sleep, it will increase your stress level significantly. More sleep will boost your immune system and help you go into a stressful situation with a positive attitude.

Sophomore Henry Godino noticed something some colleges were doing that seemed to work.

“I’ve heard about one or two colleges [that] have a room called the ‘no stress room’ where if a college student is super stressed, they can go in there and there’s puppies and kittens to play with and they’re all happy,” Godino said.

As you go through the school year, make sure to take a deep breath and look back at what you have already achieved. Picture yourself accomplishing your goals.
