PAINFUL EXCESSOF PLEASURE VANESSA DONOSO LOPEZ

ROSCOMMON ARTS CENTRE VISUAL ART | OFF-SITE | KING HOUSE BOYLE

Roscommon Arts Centre are expanding their reach beyond Roscommon Town, bringing quality contemporary art to communities further afield.

Spanish artist Vanessa Donoso Lopez’s intricately executed installation will transform the Long Gallery space of King House, using curios type objects and organic forms created out of paper.

Vanessa Donoso López (born Barcelona, Spain) lives and works in Dublin.

She studied at the School of Arts and Design Llotja, Barcelona, the University of Barcelona, and the Winchester College of Art, UK. Some of her solo shows include ‘A Painful Excess of Pleasure’, Kevin Kavanagh Gallery, Dublin, ‘Jouissance’, Madame la Marquise, Barcelona, ‘ The God of Small Things’, Rubicon Gallery, Dublin and ‘Precaution’ at Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin. She was awarded a studio residency at the Royal Hibernian Academy in 2012 and is currently on a Sculpture Workshop Residency Award and Bursary at the Firestation Artists Studios and on a year project studio at Temple Bar Gallery and Studios.

VISUAL ART PROGRAMME

THE PARK PROJECT: PART 1 ROCKINGHAM SEAN RAFFERTY

Sean Rafferty’s project focuses on the remnants of the former Rockingham Estate, which encompasses Lough Key Forest Park and the farm of his late grandparents. Rafferty has created a monument in Lough Key Forest Park using fragments of the once great Rockingham House now strewn throughout the site of Kingston Hall, the former farmhouse of the Rockingham Demesne.

In Rafferty’s words, it is “a gesture that recognises my family history in the context of the history of the area”. A series of works based on this salvaging process is being exhibited in Roscommon Arts Centre. A map to guide you to the monument is available at the information desk of Lough Key Forest Park Visitor Centre.

Sean Rafferty was born in Galway and is now based in Sydney. In recent projects he has adopted the role of collector, salvaging fragments from locations and sources and arranging them according to sets of criteria.

Rafferty’s interest in the Irish landscape originates from his childhood experiences on the farms of his late grandparents in Co. Louth and Co. Roscommon. Sean is currently undertaking a residency at the Fire Station Artist Studios, Dublin and was recently Artist in Residence with Waverley Council in Sydney.

THE MOTHERSHIP PROJECT To co-incide with Eamon O’Kane’s installation A History of Play, Roscommon Arts Centre will also be hosting an event facilitated by The Mothership Project. Tackling issues relating to parenthood and maintaining an arts practice, artists based in the region are invited to join us for this informal meeting where children are welcome to engage with Eamon O’Kane’s installation while their parents meet and discuss topical issues with other artists. Artist Eamon O’Kane will transform the gallery into an interactive space, referencing educational play objects devised by the inventor of “Kindergarten” Friedrich Fröbel. For the artist, parenthood acted as the catalyst for this installation which is designed to be experienced by adults & children, teachers & schools. Over the course of the exhibition Roscommon based toddler groups, families and educators are invited to experience the joy of play in the gallery space.

For the duration of A History of Play, Roscommon based parent and toddler groups, Montessori schools and other educators are invited to use the gallery as a place to hold their weekly meeting. Contact us for more information or to schedule a session in the gallery.

Eamon O’Kane has exhibited widely and is the recipient of many awards and scholarships including the Taylor Art Award, The Tony O’Malley Award and a Fulbright Award. O’Kane has had over forty solo exhibitions including shows in Berlin, Frankfurt, Dublin, Zurich, New York, London and Copenhagen. O’Kane is Professor of Visual Art at Bergen Academy of the Art and Design, Norway www.khib.no

VISUAL ART EDUCATION Over the duration of the exhibitions, our Visual Art Curator Linda Shevlin will present a limited number of talks and tours of the gallery. Linda is a visual artist and curator based in Co. Roscommon. In 2013 Linda was awarded the Arts Council’s Visual Arts Curatorial Residency award and is currently producing a series of events and exhibitions in County Roscommon.

VISUAL ART: CURATOR’S TALK

Linda Shevlin will give a talk and tour of the current exhibition The Park Project: Part 1 “Rockingham” by Australian artist Sean Rafferty.

Linda is a visual artist and curator based in Co. Roscommon. In 2013 Linda was awarded the Arts Council’s Visual Arts Curatorial Residency award and is currently producing a series of events and exhibitions in County Roscommon.

This experimental process is part residency, part commission and will result in an exhibition of work by artist Sean Lynch and local history enthusiast, Liam Byrne.

The project will demonstrate the breadth of knowledge and interest in local history by Roscommon communities, as Liam works with Sean to contextualise his collection through an exhibition. Collecting stories plays a huge role in Sean Lynch’s art practice while Liam is the collector of the objects, relics and ephemera that document these stories. Bringing something of Sean’s work together with Liam’s collection will create an interesting dialogue around archiving, knowledge and collecting.

Sean Lynch (b.1978, Kerry, Ireland) is a visual artist living in London and Askeaton, Limerick. He studied fine art at the Stadelschule, Frankfurt am Main. In recent years his artworks have been exhibited at the Camden Arts Centre, London and Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin. In 2015 he will represent Ireland at the Venice Biennale.

Liam Byrne has been a lifelong collector, starting at a young age with stamps and progressing from there through many different themes. Liam collects all manner of paper material relating to Roscommon including political ephemera, postcards, old photographs, old newspapers, maps, books and ephemera of every type.

Box Office: 090 6625824 Tuesday – Friday 10am – 5.00pm Saturdays: 2pm – 5pm on performance days only.

On performance evenings, box office hours: 7.15pm – 8.30pm.

The Gallery is open to the public during centre opening hours.

Please note tickets should be collected at least fifteen minutes before the advertised start time.

Alternatively tickets can be collected from the box office during opening hours.

RESERVATIONS: Reservations will be held pending payment until 48 hours before a performance.

Group reservations are held until one week before a performance. In order to comply with fire regulations, each person, even babies, must have a valid ticket for performances.Please check your reservation at time of booking as there is room for human error and mistakes cannot always be rectified at a later stage.There are no refunds or exchanges on tickets, unless events are cancelled/re-scheduled. If you are unable to attend an event please contact us and we will endeavour to assist you.

DISABLED PATRONS: Roscommon Arts Centre welcomes patrons with disabilities and can accommodate up to 8 wheelchair users at each performance. Patrons who are physically disabled, hearing, or visually impaired must be escorted to events.

As a courtesy the escort will be given a complimentary ticket to attend. These tickets, as well as wheelchair locations are sold on a first-come, first-serve basis, so please inform the Box Office of your seating needs at time of booking. Although animals are not permitted in the arts centre, an exception is made for guide dogs and service animals, the box office should be made aware of such accommodations at time of booking. Please note the arts centre does not have elevators or escalators; the gallery and workshop spaces are not wheelchair accessible.

LATECOMERS: Latecomers will not be admitted and will be asked to wait until the interval for admittance.

PAYMENT: Payment can be made by cash, debit card or cheque. Cheques should be made payable to Roscommon County Council.

TICKET PRICES: Where an alternative price is advertised, this applies to children & young people, full time students, senior citizens (65+), the unwaged (with social welfare cards), the disabled and to those with restricted mobility. ID cards may be required.
