UPDATE ON OUR BUILDING PROJECT Roscommon Arts Centre is undergoing a major re-development, due for completion in 2019. Funded by Roscommon County Council, with support from the Department of Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs. The development will address the current accessibility issues associated with both the gallery and workshop, with new purpose build accessible spaces. The renovations will also see existing spaces at the centre re-developed and re-imagined and dramatically change the faรงade of the building. On completion Roscommon Arts Centre will boast a new ground floor purpose built visual art space and a large first floor workshop space, while the existing visual art gallery will be re-developed to incorporate two new artist studios, that will link directly to the first floor workshop space. The entrance to the building will be upgraded and the extended foyer will see both the box office and bar areas re-positioned, enhancing the visitor experience to the centre. Backstage the Green Room will be extended and improved and a third dressing room will be built, dramatically increasing the amount of space available to performances with large cast numbers. We would like to thank you, our patrons for your understanding, patience and ongoing support during the renovation period and we look forward to unveiling a new-look Roscommon Arts Centre, developed for the public to enjoy and artists to inhabit.

ROSCOMMON DRAMA FESTIVAL 2019 The best of amateur drama in Ireland will be showcased in this year’s drama festival as nine groups from around the country take to the stage. This year’s adjudicator, Padraic McIntyre, has a wealth of experience as an actor, director and adjudicator and patrons can look forward to his nightly insights after each performance. This is a qualifying festival under auspices of the Amateur Drama Council of Ireland (ADCI) to the All-Ireland Drama Festivals in Athlone (open) and in Doonbeg (confined).

VISUAL ART PROGRAMME 2019 PREVIEW The Roscommon Arts Centre 2019 visual arts programme will hinge on celebrating the legacy and future of visual culture in the County through a number of exhibitions. The new visual art space will open with a “Rope Drawing” installation by Roscommon born artist Brian O’Doherty. A programme of countywide education and outreach projects will be programmed to coincide with the exhibition. This will be followed by a retrospective by WAR Working Artists Roscommon). WAR was instrumental in developing the first iteration of Roscommon Arts Centre and this show will celebrate their extended contribution to the arts in the county. Other exhibitions include a review of 5 years of The Park Project with a new commission by Yvonne McGuinness. We will also show work developed under the Arts & Disability award where worked developed by commissioned Roscommon born artist Anthony Keigher collaborated with members of the Brothers of Charity. Other events and projects include a newly commissioned project by Eimear Walshe commemorating Roscommon born educator and activist Margaret Cousins and an offsite event by Lucy McKenna at Lough Key Forest Park.

The Park Project was established in 2014 and it takes on the form of a “residency commission” that allows an artist to occupy the space of the park, collecting history and exchanging knowledge that will inform their future work, while working within the historical and contemporary contexts of the site. For the Park Project 2018, artist Lucy McKenna has been exploring the overlap between mindfulness, perception and quantum physics and taking Lough Key Park as a special location where the human mind may have the ability to perceive the universe more sensitively. Join the artist for a short, light-filled experience by Lough Key water edge.

DAEDALUS ARTS & DISABILITY PROJECT Artist Anthony Keigher has been working with The Brothers of Charity exploring the intersection between drawing and performance. Through a series of workshops participants have been showing off their drawing skills and performance skills with the odd Nathan Carter rendition and even some karaoke thrown in! The outcome of the workshops will be an exhibition of an explosion of colour and fun in Roscommon Arts Centre, building on Keigher and the group’s mutual passion for country music and dance.

GALLERY X:ED SECONDARY SCHOOL PARTNERS WANTED Gallery X:ED is a programme aimed to encourage local young audiences to engage with contemporary art through Roscommon Arts Centre, both on site in the gallery and offsite in schools. The programme will be facilitated and supported through the partnerships built between the arts centre, teachers and artists. It provides opportunities for young people to steer their own learning and create cultural activity across art disciplines through visits to the exhibitions at the arts centre and specially designed workshops which are developed by responding to exhibitions and exhibiting artists in the gallery, allowing students to experience the variants of contemporary art making first hand. Our writer in residence programme continues into 2019 with Sue Rainsford and Joanne Laws further expanding the scope of writing by responding to selected projects and exhibitions from our visual art programme. Joanne is an arts writer, editor and researcher based in county Roscommon. She is Features Editor of the Visual Artists’ News Sheet (IRL) and a regular contributor to international arts publications, including Art Monthly and Frieze. Sue is a writer and researcher based in Dublin. Her practice is concerned with hybrid, lyric and embodied texts, explicit fusions of critical and corporeal enquiry, as well as with material transcriptions of otherness and experiences that alter our understanding of flesh. Their writings to date are all available to download from the Roscommon Arts Centre website.

VISUAL ART COMMISSION
OPEN CALL: HISTORIC COMMISSION 2019 The second in a series of visual art commissions for County Roscommon celebrating our extraordinary citizens through exceptional and unexpected visual art projects is now open for submissions. Projects can take the form of installations or events created for a specific location within the county. Supported by The Creative Ireland Roscommon programme with a budget of #6000, the commission will be facilitated by Roscommon Arts Office in partnership with Roscommon Arts Centre. In 2019, Charlotte O’Conor Eccles, journalist, novelist and social reformer has been selected as the subject for the commission. Born in 1863 at Ballingard House outside Roscommon town, Charlotte was the author of three comic novels, Modern Men, by a Modern Maid (1887), The Rejuvenation of Miss Semaphore (under the pseudonym ‘Hal Godfrey’ 1897), The Matrimonial Lottery (1906), and an sharply observed collection of stories on life in small-town Ireland, Aliens of the West (1904). In 2019, Druid’s production of Sonya Kelly’s Furniture returns for a national tour following its sell-out run at the Mick Lally Theatre as part of the Galway International Arts Festival 2018. Written by Sonya Kelly (The Wheelchair on my Face, How to Keep an Alien), Furniture is a lighthearted new play about perceptions and possessions. Told through the lives of six individuals, this fresh comedy looks at how the things we own shape our worldview and even ourselves. RESERVATIONS: Reservations will be held pending payment until 48 hours before a performance. Group reservations are held until one week before a performance. In order to comply with fire regulations, each person, even babies, must have a valid ticket for performances. Please check your reservation at time of booking as there is room for human error and mistakes cannot always be rectified at a later stage.There are no refunds or exchanges on tickets, unless events are cancelled/re-scheduled. If you are unable to attend an event please contact us and we will endeavour to assist you.
DISABLED PATRONS: Roscommon Arts Centre welcomes patrons with disabilities and can accommodate up to 8 wheelchair users at each performance. During the renovation period, you will advised as to which door to enter/exit by. Patrons who are physically disabled, hearing, or visually impaired must be escorted to events. As a courtesy the escort will be given a complimentary ticket to attend. These tickets, as well as wheelchair locations are sold on a first-come, first-serve basis, so please inform the Box Office of your seating needs at time of booking. Although animals are not permitted in the arts centre, an exception is made for guide dogs and service animals, the box office should be made aware of such accommodations at time of booking Please note the arts centre does not have elevators or escalators; the gallery and workshop spaces are not wheelchair accessible.
