Welcome to Roscommon’s Culture Night and our programme of FREE EVENTS for all the family. Some venues may require advance booking. Culture Night is the annual event that celebrates culture, creativity and the arts. This year, it will take place on Friday 21st September 2018. Cultural venues across County Roscommon will stay open for everyone to come and enjoy the unique experience of Culture Night, a free night of fun, entertainment and discovery.

Roscommon has a vibrant rich cultural community and this is a great opportunity to sample the area’s cultural and creative offerings, for free, throughout the evening.

So join us to celebrate Roscommon’s rich cultural heritage and creativity. We would like to thank all of the artists, groups, individuals, organisers and venues that have contributed to Culture Night Roscommon 2018.

CHEOIL DO CHUILE DUINE

This group exhibition will feature work from five artists of different disciplines from painting to textiles and ceramics. The show is about individuality and non conformity.

A night of traditional music, song, dance & Ballaghaderreen Library will open late on stories for everyone to enjoy brought to the Friday 21st September for Culture Night so why stage by the Ceideadh branch of Comhaltas not call in and pick up a book, there are plenty Ceoltóirí Éireann. ARTS CABARET 2018

Enjoy performances by singing group Guess Who’s Back, singer-songwriter Bianca Fachel, and other musicians while visiting an exhibition of Artwork by the Roscommon Support Group Art and Creative Development Group. RosFM will be broadcasting on the evening including a live sound art piece and the unveiling of musical instruments, purchased with the support of The Music Network Scheme and Roscommon County Council will also take place on the night.

Arts Cabaret brings together professional and amateur artists, to showcase their work in public spaces, work such as performance, music, poetry, video, comedy, storytelling and visual arts. This Culture Night, Arts Cabaret is curated by time based Art organisation M2, Noel Molloy and Patrick Ande.

MULTICULTURAL EVENT An evening of food and music and culture in Roscommon Further Education Centre. Enjoy food from Brazil, Poland, Latvia and Ireland all accompanied with music from both the locality and other nations.

4PM - 6PM FURTHER EDUCATION CENTRE, LISNAMULT, ROSCOMMON TOWN

STROKESTOWN REMEMBERING OLIVE This sit down presentation will remember Olive Pakenham Mahon, the last member of the family to live in Strokestown Park House. Spaces are limited and pre-booking is essential.

CREATING FLOWERS FROM FABRIC This fun class is suitable for adults and children from 8 years. Learn how to make flowers from fabric using easy sewing techniques and glue. Flowers can be used to display in a vase or attached to garments or broaches and other items for decoration. There will also be demonstrations on Patchwork and Quilting.

BOYLE TOUR OF KING HOUSE This magnificently restored Georgian mansion will offer free tours of the house throughout the day and evening. Visitors can enjoy a range of interactive exhibitions featuring life-size figures, special effects and activities as well as explore and experience the exciting Mary McAleese Collection. (Last tour at 7pm).

FIONA MCDONALD: AUGMENTED REALITY View an “augmented reality” work developed by the Artist Fiona McDonald where you can see via a smart phone app the proposed UFO portal off Church Island discovered by the later Betty Meyler, President of the UFO Society of Ireland.

FRENCHPARK TRADITIONAL MUSIC, SONG & DANCE Traditional music song and dancing with local Irish dancers. Tours of the Centre, entertainment and refreshments will be provided throughout the evening. This will be a bi-lingual event (Irish & English).

ENGAGE, EXPRESS, EXPLORE: INTERCULTURAL EVENING In association with Roscommon Women’s Network, this evening of theatre, music and dance is a mix of Irish dancing with the Brazilian Capouire martial arts, the melodic jazz sounds of a local Slovakian family band and a newly devised theatre piece entitled ‘From Where To Here’ developed around the themes of displacement, the concept of home, belonging and community. Pre-booking advised.

ROSCOMMON’S CULTURAL HERITAGE Roscommon Library are open late as they present an exhibition displaying creative works from people native to County Roscommon.

Based on The Roscommon Literary Heritage Series, the exhibition will display books by the authors Douglas Hyde, Percy French, William Wilde, John McGahern, Oliver Goldsmith and B.M. Croker. Part of the exhibition will also include information on Writer Hannah Greally and Artist Roderic O’Conor.
