Whether you’re as big as a house or as small as a shoe, strap on your custard wings and tune your gnu! We’ll take you on a ridiculous journey through crazy poems, silly songs and nonsense verse from some of the best loved children’s poets including Roald Dahl, Lewis Carroll, James Joyce and Pat Ingoldsby.

This is an interactive version of the much loved children’s fairytale The Three Little Pigs. Little Gem Puppets have put their own slant on the story involving things like pizza, keep fit tips and time to reflect on your favourite foods. Whatever you do don’t tell the wolf where the pigs are hiding! Performed from a Punch and Judy style booth this show is easily accessible for a young audience.

Young readers of all ages are invited to drop in and meet the Book Doctor – no appointment needed, and no nasty jabs or tablets, we promise. After a chat about your favourite books, comics or things to do, the doctor will make a diagnosis and write a prescription for your next read. The Book Doctor has lots of ideas and there’s a book out there for everyone. Don’t forget the Book Clinic is drop-in and free of charge to families! PAGE 3

You are invited to celebrate Katie’s birthday with her as she explores what it’s like to be 12 years old. Having just moved school but not quite a teenager yet, Katie reflects on times gone by and looks to the future and all it can be. There will be truths, there will be dares, there will be presents and there will be cake! Exploring notions of childhood on the approach of adolescence, this show looks at the trials and tribulations of what young people go through in the change from primary school to secondary school. Are you ready for some drawing fun? Vamos desenhar juntos e criar uma estória especial que incorpora as culturas irlandesa e brasileira! Join Brazilian born illustrator Tarsila Krüse to create and illustrate your own story. Together you’ll create a story of your own, mixing both Irish and Brazilian culture, and Tarsila will provide you with creative ideas so you can create the illustrations for it! Tarsila is a children’s book illustrator with her two books – Ná Gabh ar Scoil! (written by Myra Zepf) and Bliain na nAmhrán (written by Tadhg Mac Dhonnagáin) being shortlisted for The CBI Book of The Year Awards. She lives in Dublin with her husband, son and two dogs

Danielle Allison comes from an educational background. She has worked with children in schools, libraries and festivals all over Ireland. Danielle tells a wide range of stories, which often involve audience participation. She is a founder member of The Dublin Yarnspinners. Now settled in Athlone, she is committed to bringing the traditional Artform of storytelling to the Midlands and was the Director of the Three Rivers Storytelling Festival. Join Danielle as she transports you to places near and far with stories that are funny, serious, wise and interactive…all at once! PAGE 5

The well known poet Colette Nic Aodha will be delivering a poetry workshop to local students during the Bookworms festival. She will give a bilingual reading of her work and give the opportunity to students to write their own poems.

Join Deirdre Sullivan author of The Primrose Leary Trilogy, Needlework and the forthcoming Tangleweed and Brine as she offers advice on how to use fairytale characters and scenarios to guide your own writing. Participants will create some of their own work, so should bring paper and pen if possible!!

FIRST EDITION COMMISSION As part of the festival, Roscommon Arts Centre offers a small amount of funding to professional theatre makers to create new work for our Bookworms audience through our ‘First Edition’ programme. This year’s recipient is Thomas Johnston who will present “Return of Spring”. Previous recipients include Paul Curley with “Roadworks” (2016) and Monkeyshine Theatre Company with “The Magic Bookshop” (2015).

THOMAS JOHNSTON & NIAMH LAWLOR - CEOL CONNECTED Every year in Whistleberry Forest, the creatures look forward to the end of the winter and the beginning of spring. This year however, spring has arrived much earlier and all the animals, except for Huggy the hedgehog, are still fast asleep. Join Huggy on his adventurous quest in search of evidence of spring as he tries to convince his friends that it is time to wake up! Performed by Thomas Johnston and Niamh Lawlor, this performance is a work-in-progress commissioned by dlr Arts Office and supported by Roscommon Arts Centre.

ALAN NOLAN GRAPHIC NOVELIST/COMICS

The Festival welcomes back Alan Nolan. He is the author and illustrator of The Big Break Detectives Casebook, The Murder Can Be Fatal Mysteries series of graphic novels and the humorous hurling novel Fintan’s Fifteen. His latest book, Conor’s Caveman is about a boy and girl who find a caveman frozen in a glacier in the Wicklow Mountains!

PHILIP BARRETT WHERE'S LARRY?

Join illustrator Philip Barrett for a giant ‘Where’s Larry?’ inspired doodle! Larry the Leprechaun is always adventuring around Ireland and loves hiding in some of the country’s most famous tourist spots. Participants are invited to help Philip draw a whole host of funny characters to disguise Larry and his family of leprechauns so that people will have to look very hard to find him!!

LUKASZ KRZYWON LITERATURE CLASSICS

Lukasz Krzywon (MA in Philosophy) runs Little Rainbow Academy Ireland since 2011 and has been working with thousands of people, young and old. He is actively promoting philosophy for children (P4C) in Ireland and Poland. Philosophy sessions with Lukasz involve stories that encompass philosophical problems, which children discuss later among themselves in the form of a community enquiry. The sessions are fun and engaging, with interactive games woven into the different stages of the inquiry. During this year’s festival, he will focus on the adventures of a Greek mythological hero, Odysseus. PAGE 8

SADIE CRAMER WB YEATS INTERACTIVE WORKSHOP

Sadie has worked on many exciting projects over the past twenty three years. She has facilitated hundreds of workshops/programmes and delivered courses/ presentations to adults and children all over Ireland. From installation to illustration, she uses a variety of forms to communicate ideas and story. She is best described as a ‘cross disciplinary’ practitioner with a passion for motivating people creatively.

GERALDINE FINN LET'S CREATE WORKSHOP

“We will build a story around characters created by the children. ‘Fun and Fantasy in the classroom!’ We will have fun building quirky, odd and strange characters, putting them in ‘challenging’ situations, then ‘forging’ a short story or poem around that, using each child’s own unique voice.”

BOOKWORMS CREATIVE TRAIL MYTHOLOGY SHOW WITH WAYNE O'CONNOR

As spoken words fill the imagination with tales of adventure and magic, art is drawn live to lead children into the ancient tales of myth and mystery from around the world. Join storyteller and illustrator Wayne O’Connor as he acts as your guide in this fun, exciting and spell binding session for all the family!

Wayne O Connor is a Sligo based Illustrator originally from Wexford who now works predominantly in the field of games and gaming. His art is inspired by Fantasy and sci-fi genres and by Mythology from around the world. He regularly hosts storytelling and art workshops for children and teens around the country.

CREATE YOUR OWN HANDMADE BOOK WORKSHOP WITH NATALIA BEYLIS

Artist Natalia Beylis will guide you in creating your own handmade book based on characters from your favourite fairy tale. Participants will explore writing, illustrating and binding their own short masterpiece which they can take home with them at the end of the workshop.

Natalia Beylis graduated from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, USA with a Bachelor of Arts in Creative Writing. She runs workshops for children and adults in book & zine making and in DIY publishing. Natalia publishes her own handmade books and zines under the imprint of Sweet Olive Misprint.

Come and invent a nation, with your own chosen laws, language, sports, flag, holidays, wildlife and of course national pudding. Is it an island or landlocked? What are the schools like, the houses, the shops and clothes, the customs and cakes and comedy shows?

Debbie Thomas has worked as a BBC journalist, drunk tea with pygmies in Uganda and lived in Bangladesh and South Africa, all essential preparation for writing for children. Her trilogy (Dead Hairy, Jungle Tangle and Monkie Business) and Class Act, for 9-12 year-old boys and girls, are published by Mercier Press. PAGE 10
