H I S T O R Y
Red Red and and Gold Gold
Since 1971, Red & Gold has been one of the most anticipated events at Rosary Academy. It's hard to imagine that today's polished program had such humble beginnings. From the founding of Rosary in 1965 until 1968, students held an annual talent show In 1968, Charlotte Ovando, a parent, approached Sister Marie Jeanne, the principal at the time, with an intriguing idea: she proposed dividing the entire student body into two teams to compete in a variety of theatrical and athletic events. However, due to the lack of facilities for the event, the idea was shelved and did not resurface until 1971, when the first "Red & Gold Meet" took place.
The initial event differed slightly from Mrs Ovando's original proposal The meet featured a sequence of performances by the different categories; one team would perform first, followed by the other. For example, Red Choral would sing a medley of songs, and then Gold Choral would perform their own compilation. Since the entire audience at St Joseph Parish Hall (Placentia) acted as judges, the meets lasted over four hours Needless to say, the first realization of the dream was more of a nightmare, but a tradition had begun.
The format remained largely the same the following year when the meet was held at the Valencia High School auditorium (Placentia), though this time, only a few judges - experts in specific areas of theatre arts - were involved. By 1973, the production evolved from simple "theatrical Olympics" into the grand event it is today However, the change was not without its challenges It all began with a heated debate during a student council meeting. Junior class president Rosemary Koenig proposed that each team incorporate all categories into a single play. The council members labeled this idea "preposterous," "outlandish," and "entirely impossible " There was a fierce argument about what high school students were capable of organizing. Despite the doubts of the student council, the idea was tried - and it was a success!
Since then, Red & Gold has been held at either Plummer Auditorium or Servite High School Theatre The ingenuity and originality that define Rosary’s Red & Gold production have remained strong since 1968, when Mrs Ovando first suggested the concept

This is the 55th annual Red & Gold Production This highly anticipated event showcases the talents and creativity of the entire student body. Each year, a variety of elements are considered when selecting the best overall production. In addition to the performance you see on stage, points are awarded for several behind-the-scenes factors, including overall team spirit, cooperation, community service, participation, and much more These criteria help ensure that every aspect of the event - both on and off the stage - contributes to creating a truly memorable experience for everyone involved The combination of these elements not only highlights the students’ theatrical talents but also their dedication to teamwork and service to the school and community
