In the Blink of an Eye,

Our hearts mourn for the loss of Mrs. Trudy Mazzarella, Mrs. Jan Lovette, and Ms. Lisa J. Nollette. Like Mary’s yes, these outstanding women said yes to Rosary High School. Each one made a lasting impact on the young women, teachers, and families they served during their tenure and their legacy will forever live on at Rosary. This year’s Red & Gold production, In the Blink of an Eye, will be performed in their honor.

"And Mary said, 'Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word.' And the angel departed from her."
Luke 1:38

Dear Parents, Alumnae, and Friends,

Welcome to Rosary Academy’s 53rd production of Red & Gold! The tradition of Red & Gold is uniquely Rosary. For over 50 years, Royals have captivated audiences and often amazed themselves. There is truly nothing else like this extraordinary tradition! Each year the production is unique, created entirely by the student body. Over the past six weeks, our students have been diligently preparing for this performance. Their dedication, enthusiasm, and teamwork were evident from the first day of practice. What you will see is a diverse and striking mix of talents, abilities, and creativity to interpret the theme, In the Blink of an Eye.

Only six weeks ago, each young woman discovered the role she would play in helping her team create a masterpiece. Rosary students understand every part/role is essential. “If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it” (1 Corinthians 12:26). This is the spirit of Red & Gold! As the girls take center stage, notice the newfound confidence sparkling in their eyes and the spring in their step. Red & Gold is more than a performance – it is a vehicle for forging friendships and extracting leadership talents

Red & Gold contributes to the development of leaders and visionaries. The energy and excitement of Red & Gold help students comprehend the value of innovation, initiative, creativity, friendship, and responsibility. Red & Gold builds community.

The incredible project that is Red & Gold takes many individuals to be successful. I am keenly aware of the magnitude that is Red & Gold. The many hands and hearts of all members of the Rosary community make Red & Gold a reality. Rosary Academy is profoundly grateful to

• The Red & Gold teams for their cooperative spirit

• All captains for their outstanding leadership

• The White Team for their organizational guidance

• Ms. LaBonte for her inspiration and devotion to the process

• Mrs. Huerta for her guidance

• Mr. Kahler, Mr. Gleason, Mrs. Decreny, Mr. Virola, Mrs. Ritchey, and their crew for their loyal commitment to our annual process

• The Rosary Faculty & Staff for their unwavering encouragement

• The Rosary parents for their enthusiastic support and service

• Rosary Alumnae for creating the vision and developing the Red & Gold tradition

• The friends of Rosary for their support and patronage

• The Administration and Staff of Servite High School for their generous and faithful hospitality

On behalf of all who minister at Rosary Academy, thank you for being here in support of our students and this wonderful tradition.

Join me in congratulating both teams for their winning attitudes and friendly spirit of competition. These young women, their loyalty to Our Mother Mary, and their dedication to Rosary are a source of great pride for our school community, their families, and their friends.

Happy Red & Gold! Go Royals!

Yours in Christ,

Since 1971, Red & Gold has been one of the most anticipated events at Rosary (High School) Academy. It is difficult to imagine that today’s polished program comes from such humble beginnings. From Rosary’s founding in 1965 until 1968 the students held an annual talent show. Charlotte Ovando, a parent, approached Sister Marie Jeanne, who was principal at the time, with an intriging idea; she proposed that the entire student body be divided into two teams and compete in a variety of both theatrical and athletic feats. Since there were no facilities for the event, the idea was shelved and did not reappear until 1971, when the first “Red & Gold Meet” took place.

The initial production differed slightly from Mrs. Ovando’s original proposal. The meet was a sequence of performances by the various categories; one team’s category would perform first, then the other’s. For example, Red choral would sing a medley of songs, then Gold choral would perform their own compilation. Because the entire audience at St. Joseph Parish Hall (Placentia) did the judging, the meets would take more than four hours. Needless to say, the first realization of the dream was something of a nightmare, but a tradition had

begun. The format was nearly the same the following year when the meet took place at the Valencia High School (Placentia) auditorium, except that there were only a few judges, those who were experts in a particular field of theatre arts. In 1973, the production evolved from simple “theatrical Olympics” into the grand piece that it is today.

However, the change was not peaceful; it began with a small war during a student council meeting. Junior class president Rosemary Koenig proposed that each team incorporate all categories into a play. The council members labeled this “preposterous,” “outlandish,” and “entirely impossible.” There was a heated argument about what high school students were capable of organizing. Despite the doubts of the student council, the idea was attempted and was a success. Since then, Red & Gold has been held at either Plummer Auditorium or Servite High School Theatre. The ingenuity and originality that characterize Rosary’s Red & Gold production have been unwavering since 1968 when Mrs. Ovando first suggested the idea.
