Twinning tree global days of action

It’s that time of the year again. Time to act and help the environment!

The Global Action Days is a campaign by the Foundation for Environmental Education to activate students and teachers to lead

the change for a more sustainable world by getting involved in funfilled, informative, activities.

Participating in constructive, meaningful actions helps young people to see the point of being involved, and aids their understanding of what they can do themselves to help the environment.

The 'Day of Action' is an opportunity for students, staff and the wider community to get together to work towards achieving some of the targets set out in your action plan. In some cases it may be carried out in conjunction with local or national projects (e.g.

National Spring Clean, Energy Awareness Week, Clean Coast, Tree Week, etc.)

Benefits of the 'Day of Action' include: Raising Awareness of Green-Schools within and beyond the school.

Involving the wider community. Parents, neighbours, local business, and the Local Authority can all be drawn in. They can give advice and practical help. The 'Day of Action' is also a great opportunity to raise publicity for the whole school.

Reaching into the earth‌ is designed to get teachers started with planning a school vegetable garden to enhance student learning. Growing a school vegetable garden opens the door for students to understand where their food comes from and why it is important to eat vegetables. School gardens can also nurture young leaders by helping students

to

develop

proficiency

in

critical

thinking,

problem-solving,

responsibility, and communication. Growing a school garden can foster positive attitudes toward science, grow a strong sense of curiosity, and cultivate environmental stewardship among students learned in books to visible, living examples.

Tree planting is a learning opportunity to get kids involved in the environment and conservation of our natural resources.

Tree Planting projects connect students to the benefits of trees and foster environmental stewardship. Tree planting is a great way to increase student interest in their local environment and achieve academic goals.

When students plant trees, they can see for themselves the structure of trees, learn what they need and how they grow. Teachers can use the planting process to discuss the benefits trees provide, while including many subjects that their classes are studying.

Students become aware that they can play a role in protecting the environment through personal involvement. Ultimately, it is hoped that the experience will help them make intelligent decisions about conservation and use of our valuable natural resources.
