{introduction} this stream draws from the debates about the ‘right to architecture’ to explore a building – historically associated with ‘capital A architecture’: an art gallery. this project at a theoretical level, questions who has the right to make space, and explore the kinds of relations that are produced in this process. ‘how can the body be used as an architectural drawing tool to explore & analyse atmospheres present throughout the wellington and its wider context?’ the research will be carried out primarily through design-led research. this methodological framework follows murray fraser, jane rendell, and peter downton, and pursues an iterative approach to exploration. the methods used include drawing, photography, digital modelling, analogue modelling & collage. the results of this stage were a complex array of drawings that reflect the anxieties & spatial complexities of the site. these drawings are starting to portray landscape typologies that could be inhabited. this research is open to interpretation and will change throughout the design process.

this collation of images taken from site begin to interpret atmospheres experiences by the body without interferance from concious focal positioning. the interpretation can then be used to inform mood or atmosphere of built space. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

this series of contextural site diagrams was derived from the pervious collage of images. it begins to explore the notion of the body as a drawing tool. these drawings can be used to extract form and determine spatial characteristics. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

{shane cotton} shane cotton is a contemporary maori artist born in lower hutt. his work focuses on ownership of land/objects and how objects with significant symbolic value can begin to inform natural typological landscapes. this is particularly important for this project as landscape was chosen as a plus one program. cottons work serves as inspiration and political understanding as well as helping to further our knowledge of what land is and what it can mean. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

{daniel libeskind : jewish museum} daniel libeskind’s jewish museum is an exploration of time and memory. it harnesses architypes such as compression and release, light and dark as well as natural and unatural. while harnessing binary typologies - it also invites flexible attitudes - providing a journey like no other. this journey includes two dead ends where one can gain a new perspective of time and space. the jewish museum stimulates all sensoral experience in order to generate the most emotional and provocative response. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

{morphosis architects : dallas museum} morphosis studio have explored the concept of an object that is being manipulated/ manipulates its landscape. this methodology generates spaces that are environment and contexturally driven, imploring a similar idealogy to shane cotton and to the operation of body in space and how it determines its own------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

{spatial response to atmosphere through body} these formal typologies are direct reflections of the bodys experience of site. by investigating such envelopes one can hope to begin to develop an exciting architectural landscape that reflects the ideas and idealogy of contemporary new zealand artists. this might begin to reflect how the body interpret such landscapes -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

{spatial atmospheres - landscape - body} these creative site surveys were used to me help understand how the body can be used as a drawing tool. they also served as form generating devices and the beginnings of architectural landscpae typologies. as one moves forward in the design process, these drawings have helped with this understanding as well as inviting mood or atmosphere in a two dimensional context. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

{spatial atmospheres - landscape - body program} these drawings start to provoke or suggest a programatical language that eludes to possible spatial atmospheres. forms derrived from direct human experience are they given roles that suit their form. this process is mixed and matched in order to meet the programmatical requirments of a contemporary art gallery without losing the underlying concept. the translation of drawings to digital works has changed their formal characteristics - this has been noted in order to protect the concept from becoming sterilised. moving from analogue to digital and back again is a great method for doing this. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

{spatial atmospheres - landscape - body - mood} this series of documentitive digital spaces help to define mood as well as looking to view architecture from a perspective driven mentality rather than one of detached reality. they start to bring conditional site typologies from the creative site survey into such atmospheres that have been developed digitally. this process has helped me to define the mood as well as begin to unpack forms that prescribe to program while inviting a developing idealogy. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

{mood in landscape} this series aim was to somehow invite an analogue technique into a digitally driven atmosphere. these forms could possibly be used to initiate an architectural idea as some of the highlighted forms begin to exhibited trauts similar to shane cottons landscape works. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

{investigative drawing} /53

the aim of this drawing was to invite previous forms and typolgies back into a spatially driven environment. this exercise has been successful as it exhibits charateristics vital to the protrayal of the previous philosophy regarding landscape and architecture as objects with continuous communication. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

the aim of the previous hand drawings was to begin to develop an interactive landscape structure that exhibits our complex but nessecary relationship. this form could be used to view landscape subjectively rather than the objective way it is viewed today. this isometric drawing was exploring whether or not the same thing could be done with a solid four walls framework. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

{concluding propostion} this research driven investigative design process has helped to define idealogical positioning as well as outline clear strengths and weaknesses that can be used in the journey forward. as critical evaluations take place at each step on the road it means that each move is well thoughout and documented. during this process the proposed sketch design invites plenty of perpective driven landscape architectonics that start to convey an underlying idealogy. this idealogy has been muted from the early stages of this process and i would like to see architecture and landscape become more infused reflecting the chaotic and political nature of this topic. the aesthetic, mood, atmosphere, form and programmatical consideration all leave room for copulous amounts of development - yet they have allowed much potential for the centre of contempoary art to grow into a strong symbol of reflective, indicitive and political gallery typoligies. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
