COPENHAGEN & MALMO

These are photos I took during a trip to Copenhagen in 2018 and during an Interrailing stop in Malmo in 2022. Calatrava's Turning Torso is particularly eye-catching along with Kim Utzon's Maritime University (Bottom Right). I don’t know the designer of the stairs (Top Left), but I thought it was a very elegant design.

I went on a family holiday to New York in October 2019. It’s a place I have always been fascinated by. The scale of the buildings is immense.

There is an incredible mixture between old and new in New York. Seen here is the Art-Deco Chrysler building, an example of something old-style. F.L. Wright's Guggenheim an example of early modern style and Calatrava's Oculus exemplifies neo modernism and high-tech modern architecture. These three buildings really stuck out to me during the trip.

I have been to London twice. In 2016 and 2021. What struck me about some of London's' architecture was the exceptional facades and exteriors on display. Shown are favourites of mine that I photographed on my trips. The steelwork on the exterior of the Brunel Building and the unique brickwork on the Tate Modern by Herzog & De Meuron really struck me as beautiful. Renzo Piano's shard uses its glazing to imitate a shard of glass penetrating the sky which I think is a wonderful concept.

Dublin is my home, so over the years I have had time to notice what elements of buildings and structure I like or dislike. I have included some of my favourites like Liebskind's Bord Gais Theatre and Calatrava's Samuel Beckett bridge. Shown above is a view of Dublin's Modern Docklands through the hole In the Samuel Beckett bridge. This shows a view of a modern and prosperous Dublin. Bottom left show the old Central Bank which was Dublin's first truly modern building. It was controversial at the time but I think it has aged excellently. I Have taken these photos between 2018 and 2022.

This is my original vision of a cabin in the woods. I created it using AutoCAD and Trimble Sketchup with VRay as a rendering engine. It is positioned on an alpine hill with large picture windows facing the valley for optimal views.

On the left is a full plan of the ground floor of my house including front and back gardens. I completed this during my weekly work experience in an architect's office.

These are two concept plans I made in AutoCAD. They show two different options if we wanted to install an En-suite bathroom upstairs. The plans account for existing plumbing and utility installations. The top plan involves building over the singe storey garage to add extra space to the first floor.

These drawings show the construction of a cavity wall including inner and outer leaves insulation, and damp proofing. The top image shows where the wall meets the roof and the steps that must be taken to prevent cold bridging.

This drawing shows what must happen when a cavity wall meets a window opening.

This is a detail of a windowsill and how it should be properly insulated and constructed.

This drawing shows a timber floor joists and how they are supported against a concrete cavity wall.

This is a drawn example of the building regulations surrounding stairways, landings and corridors.

These are my hand drawings. On the top left I have envisioned a public garden or courtyard with a building possibly housing a bar or restaurant with 360-degree views.

The top right is a modern interpretation of a plantation house with a wrap-around balcony providing shade to the inner house.

Middle right is a sketch of the back of my own house in Dublin.

Bottom right was a class activity where we had to sketch 14 basic building shapes in 2 minutes. Some of these are recognisable designs and some are made up.

Bottom left is a sketch of a modern house in a forest setting. In this sketch I used pantone markers to highlight important

This is a concept building suitable for maybe apartments or offices.

This is a drawing of the house that I made in sketchup shown earlier.
