EDITORIAL ROQUETA MAGAZINE 377 - WINTER 2025 WINTER IN MENORCA Winter settles gently over Menorca, softening the landscape and slowing the rhythm of island life. The beaches fall quiet, the fields green again after the first rains, and our towns light up with the warm glow of Christmas preparations. For many of us, the winter months reveal Menorca at its most authentic — a time of community, conversation and the small but meaningful rituals that shape island life.

In this issue we look back at an eventful year and ahead to the promises of the next. Christine Brooker brings us a comprehensive round-up of island news: long-awaited progress on the Miramar Hostel in Es Castell, environmental concerns from UNESCO over the Rafal Rubí roundabout, housing developments, drone surveillance in protected areas — and even a surprising Nutri-Score that ranks Mahón cheese below Coca-Cola Zero.

CHIARA OLIVER AND ED SHEERAN Chiara Oliver, the Menorcan singer, was photographed having an animated conversation with Ed Sheeran at the L40 Music Awards recently in Valencia. Universal Music released a video of the two of them. Chiara is of Menorcan descent on her father’s side and English on her mother’s side. She began her musical training at the Municipal School of Music of Ciutadella and later at the Menorca Conservatory. Her first contact with a stage was at the age of 6, when she participated as a candidate in a talent contest organised by a hotel.

ES CASTELL After 25 years, Es Castell has finally approved the basic project to reform the old Miramar Hostel, which is in ruins and a complete eyesore in the port. The promoters will have nine months to present their detailed project, which will reduce the capacity by 45%—from 27 rooms for 51 people to 14 double rooms for 28. The French company wishes to maintain the restaurant and incorporate a roof terrace.

The sticking point in Fonduco has always been Costas, the coastal authority, which has finally agreed to grant licences for plans that do not alter the original structures. The alcalde, Lluís Camps, is relieved: there are 16 projects in the pipeline and the lack of permissions has affected not only the town’s economy but also its appearance.

Maybe we will be able to eat at Rocamar again?!

Camps, has also announced that fines for riders on electric scooters have quadrupled in the municipality this year compared to 2024. Thirty-four scooters have been confiscated. Fines were issued for not respecting pedestrian space, riding without insurance, or being underage.

Camps says everything can be improved, but praises the municipal police, as most fines resulted from their controls. Discussions are taking place to ban scooters from the football ground (Sergi Llull) due to the danger they pose to parents and children who frequent the area.

PLAYAS DE FORNELLS Owners of land in Playas de Fornells (Sector 14B) are asking the Govern in Palma to evaluate a plan to create more interior growth in the urbanisation. The public can view the plans, which must be validated by the Ayuntamiento in Es Mercadal. The promoters want to parcel land into 118 plots for houses (some for possible tourist use…) and an extra space for 300 in a hotel, plus 539 public parking spaces on existing roads. They intend to invest 7.5 million euros.

These plans have been presented for the development of a plot measuring 189,365 sq m (almost 19 hectares), 40,000 sq m of which will be destined for parks, gardens and children’s playgrounds. Existing roads will have to be rebuilt in the zone as they are in poor repair. Plans for a sewage plant are also included in case the one planned in Es Mercadal has not been completed. Promoters say the water supply is guaranteed with the existing network.

The alcalde of Es Mercadal says he hopes that the houses will be destined for habitual homes and not as second residences. Local residents are not happy with the plans.

ROQUETA WINTER 2025 CARS SCRAPPED UNNECESSARILY Last year 1.16 million cars were scrapped in Spain, according to figures issued by traffic authorities. Some were due to the DANA storm and floods in Valencia, others because of low-emission zones in cities. In Menorca there are no exact figures, but many cars are being scrapped because insurance companies find it more economical to send vehicles to be broken up than to pay for repairs. Parts have risen sharply in price, and mechanics now cost an average of 50 euros an hour. Competition for business is high and insurance premiums have not increased in proportion to repair costs. Mechanics say many of the “write-off” vehicles they receive could, in fact, be repaired.

POLITICS, RAFAL RUBÍ AND UNESCO

PARAGLIDING FROM MONTE TORO Paragliding from Monte Toro may be affected by a double sanction from the Guardia Civil levied on a 64-year-old Menorcan man who landed on a restricted heliport on the S’Arangí farm in Es Mercadal. He flew over an area of special protection for birds (ZEPA), part of a Balearic network since 2000 and crucial for avian biodiversity. The heliport may only be used by Ibanat (Balearic Nature Authorities) in case of forest fires. The fine could range from 3,000 to 6,000 euros.

He infringed regulations relating to air safety and protected nature reserves. Monte Toro is included in the special protection area, yet the company that offers the activity—Parapenting Menorca Biplaza—advertises on its website three flight zones depending on wind: Son Bou, S’Enclusa and Monte Toro, adding that participants may share the skies with birds of prey and other species. The Guardia Civil prohibits paragliding from the highest point on the island.

UNESCO has recently expressed concerns about the roundabout and flyover at Rafal Rubí, next to the prehistoric site. ICOMOS, the body that assesses UNESCO sites, has rejected the construction of a twolevel roundabout, adding that other issues also need correcting: Menorca Talayótica does not have an up-to-date plan regarding visits, research, climate-change mitigation, interpretation and signposting of monuments, nor a clear tourist strategy.

ICOMOS received complaints from nine organisations (regarding the roundabout), plus a letter from the Minister of Culture in the central government in Madrid, Ernest Urtasun (PSOE), who has written to the Govern Balear and the Consell (both PP) asking them to use alternatives. The Consell says that the technical reports sent to UNESCO were incomplete and clearly favoured demolition. They intend to press on with the work, saying road safety is their priority and that Rafal Rubí is one of 290 prehistoric sites on the island. They also argue that demolishing the flyover (started before 2015 under a PP Consell) would incur patrimonial responsibility as public money is involved.

PSOE governed from 2015 to 2023 and took no further action. Now, with local elections in 2027 and the central government without a majority—also facing elections in 2027—the subject has sadly become politicised. Road deaths still occur on the main road, and an urgent solution is clearly needed.

UNESCO, ironically, has in its Agenda 2030 a goal to “reduce by half the number of deaths and injuries caused by traffic accidents”. As for ICOMOS’ other observations, the councillor for culture in the Consell, Josep Pons Torres, defends the work done by his department and says he will incorporate the recommendations.

The latest news, as we go to press, is that the tribunal that had paralysed the work (under the Treasury, Ministerio de Hacienda) has now given the green light to continue, rejecting the socialists’ appeal, as they deal with building-contractor issues; but they have not addressed the actual project nor UNESCO’s complaints. For this reason, Urtasun and the Consell are to meet at the end of the month.

AMBULANCE DRIVERS The Balearic Government announced an ambitious project to renew the ambulance fleet on the islands, but an unexpected problem has arisen. The new ambulances, with all the latest equipment, weigh over 4,000 kilos and require a C1 driving licence; the normal B licence is insufficient. Only eight drivers (who also have patient-care qualifications) have the C1, while 80% do not.

Emergency ambulances are not affected. None of the new ambulances has arrived in Menorca yet, as they remain in Mallorca. They should have arrived in late September. The Conselleria de Salut has now announced that it will finance drivers to obtain the required licence (approximately 1,000 euros). This has pleased USAE, the union in Menorca, though they note that it is not a quick process and better planning should have been in place. Another criticism is that the current ambulances will soon be obsolete.

ROQUETA WINTER 2025 NO TRAFFIC PATROLS AT NIGHT In October, an accident occurred on the Cala Galdana road when a vehicle carrying three young people overturned at 5:30 a.m. They were transferred by ambulance after being attended by Ciutadella local police, even though the accident occurred in the municipality of Ferreries. Shortly before 7 a.m., two Guardia Civil officers arrived on motorbikes and took charge. The accident, classified as serious, highlights deficiencies in night-time security.

There have been no night-time local-police patrols in Ferreries since July 2021, nor in Es Migjorn. More surprising is the lack of traffic police: since September, there have been no night patrols on the island between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., except on Fridays and Saturdays. In July, August and September, six extra agents are assigned to guarantee the service. In winter, if there were a serious accident with fatalities, central operations in the Balearics would call two traffic officers on emergency duty at home, who would then have to collect their vehicle and equipment.

AIRBNB Airbnb has finally purged its website of adverts for illegal holiday lets, although authorities say some have still slipped through. However, bureaucracy (of course) has reared its ugly head and some renters who pay all their taxes and are completely legal have found they are blocked on the website.

This is because licence numbers are required and various authorities and ayuntamientos have issued different numbers. Maybe for once the company is not guilty!

The Consell has issued fines totalling over one million euros for illegal renting.

So far this year, the Consell has opened 32 cases and there are around 50 more pending investigation, with the investigative phase already completed.

The Consell says that many of those sanctioned pay before the execution deadline to reduce the amount, although others file appeals, so the collection of the fines often ends up being prolonged, even for years. However, they claim that payment is always eventually collected and that in the last 25 years the Consell has only lost one lawsuit! They also admitted that offenders increasingly use social media instead of official platforms like Airbnb, making them harder to detect.

ROQUETA WINTER 2025 INHERITANCE FOR SALE The sale of inheritances is increasing in the Balearics. Citizens who want to speed up the process are finding it a convenient solution. In recent years, specialist companies that buy part of an inheritance have multiplied on the internet. Lawyer Marina Munllor explains that cases in Mallorca often involve court disputes between beneficiaries. The person who sells usually wants money quickly and accepts a lower amount. Family conflicts are common; sometimes one beneficiary is living in the property. Sellers are often surprised to find themselves dealing not with relatives but with a company that is not in a hurry.

About half of these inheritances end up in court because not all parties want to sell. Munllor has handled a high-value case in Mallorca. She notes that 15% of people in the Balearics are rejecting inheritances because they would inherit debt rather than assets.

USE OF DRONES Still on the effect on wildlife: there have been complaints about the use of drones by Seprona (Guardia Civil) to fine cars parking illegally in the S’Albufera des Grau area (Favaritx and Es Grau), due to the high level of environmental protection in force. Locals have parked on the area next to Favaritx lighthouse in winter for many years and they have complained that there are no signs to say it is prohibited. Instead you must park 2 km away to walk to the lighthouse.

HOUSING IN ALAIOR The Consell is to provide funding to Alaior for the purchase of land to build social housing. They are also contributing to ongoing sales in Ferreries and Es Mercadal. The plot in Alaior, near the old road at 91 Es Banyer, measures nearly 3,000 sq m. A building of 6,913 sq m (about 100 flats) is planned, costing 750,000 euros. The Consell will contribute 557,569 euros. The opposition argues that the land is susceptible to flooding, but the Ayuntamiento says many areas of Alaior face similar issues. The town already has 21 social or council flats/houses and 14 more awaiting construction.

COCA COLA HEALTHIER THAN MAHÓN CHEESE? First it was cold-pressed olive oil; now local cheese has been affected by Nutri-Score, the food-assessment system started in France and used by many supermarket chains. Olive oil originally had a C rating, later upgraded to B after protests. Mahón–Menorca cheese, made only with milk, natural fermentation, curds and salt, has been given an E—the lowest possible classification—while Coca-Cola Zero receives an A.

Meanwhile, the fight continues over a block of flats being auctioned by Sareb (the “bad bank” in Spain, which sells properties linked to bankruptcy). A judicial order has temporarily suspended the auction, and no new date has been set.

The property has a debt of 13 million euros. Sixty homes are affected, and many vulnerable residents face eviction. It has emerged that the flats were also built on land at risk of flooding, complicating matters further. One resident, a 60-year-old woman who lives alone, says it would be impossible for her to find accommodation at current prices. There is widespread anxiety, and although all political parties express sympathy, no solution has been found.

Nutritionists explain that products are judged against similar items: pizzas with pizzas, biscuits with biscuits, etc. The classification is voluntary, but supermarkets note that items rated A or B sell far better than those rated D or E. The regulatory board for Denomination of Origin products highlights that Mahón–Menorca cheese contains no additives or chemicals but has naturally high levels of fat and salt, hence the low rating. Carol Quevedo, manager of the board, is not in favour of Nutri-Score because it does not differentiate between product categories, adding that the level of salt has already been reduced—it was historically necessary for conservation.

Local nutritionist Marta Seguí advises people not to rely solely on the “traffic light” system (green good, red bad, etc.) but to read the ingredients.

Meanwhile, Mahón–Menorca cheese has just celebrated its 40th anniversary with the appellation of origin and is among the top three cheeses in Spain, with 2.6 million kilos certified in 2024—behind only Manchego and Arzúa-Ulloa from Galicia, and ahead of Cabrales. Its main market is the Balearics and mainland Spain, but it is also exported abroad, including to the USA and UK. 07

PHISHING – BUT NOT WITH MORTIMER AND WHITEHOUSE.

THE MOST EXCLUSIVE AND EXPENSIVE PLACES TO LIVE IN MENORCA A recent survey shows that the richest places to live in Menorca are Sant Lluís and Es Mercadal, which have the highest rateable values. Both municipalities have grown more than others, mainly because of upmarket coastal residences—particularly in Sant Lluís, Binibèquer, Binisafúller/Roters and Cap d’en Font—where income per resident is the highest on the island.

IN BRIEF • Air Nostrum will not permit passengers from Menorca to catch earlier flights from Palma when booked on a later one—even when there are delays and plenty of available seats.

• A 77-year-old man had to stand during a long bus journey in Menorca because no seats were free and none of the younger passengers offered him theirs.

• Neighbours in Malbuger, near the Mateu Orfila hospital, are fed up with cockerels crowing and disturbing the peace. They have asked the Ayuntamiento to sanction people who feed them. (Let’s hope they don’t fine the elderly priest who soaks bread before feeding them…)

• The Guardia Civil is investigating a 41-year-old man for introducing nonnative species to the island. He is accused of releasing guinea pigs at Son Àngel and Algaiarens in the protected area of La Vall to the north of Ciutadella. They have multiplied, and authorities are now appealing on social media for people with space or hutches to adopt them. They have also been found on a farm at La Vall. Christmas is coming...

Some very good friends of ours in the UK were recently the victims of scammers. By their own admission they did all the things they knew not to do. Luckily they were able to stop the scam before too much was lost.

They said they felt as if they were hypnotised.

• The central government in Madrid has paid part of its debt to airlines for the residents’ discount, but still owes more pending approval of “extraordinary payments”.

They suspect that their bank details may have been “acquired” as part of the M&S hacking which targeted the company earlier in the year.

• A group of neighbours in Cala en Porter is organising a project for the next local elections, aiming to have a representative from the urbanisation on Alaior’s town council.

After talking to them and looking at some pointers online it seemed a good idea to share advice that we all know! The approach to Christmas is stressful and it is a time when it is easier to be distracted.

CALA EN BOSC

Remember:

Per la Mar Viva (For a Living Sea) and Nexport (operators of the marina at Cala en Bosc) are selling ashtrays made from plastic found in the sea and cans thrown into Ciutadella harbour after late-night drinking. These ashtrays help recycle waste and reduce cigarette-butt pollution. They estimate around 40,000 butts are found by the sea and in the harbour, with 72,000 in total found in the Cala en Bosc area between 1 April and 30 September.

• the bank fraud department do NOT ring to discuss details of a bank account • the bank does NOT ask for details of transactions and ask you to share verifications • the bank caller will only identify themselves by a first name • the bank will NOT ask you to use software like “Anydesk”

Per la Mar Viva interviewed smokers along the quay and found that 90% did not know pocket ashtrays existed. Ten businesses with beach concessions have chosen Per la Mar Viva to receive between 1% and 5% of their concession fees—an initiative

by Ciutadella’s Ayuntamiento that will inject 20,000 euros into the project.

• the bank will not ask you to disclose information about other bank accounts you may have.

So – be alert if the “bank” calls. Thank them politely and put the phone down. Call the number printed on your bank card to check.

Make sure that you are familiar with your bank´s security systems, like card readers, codes and text message protocols.

In the approach to Christmas be cautious about very, very, very good offers!

And look carefully at websites with unbelievably good bargains – check spelling and presentation of logos. The imitators are very clever!

Early evening seems a popular time for calls.

So be prepared and don’t get caught like the carp in the net!

DRIVING IN SPAIN: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW FOR 2026 Spain’s traffic authority, the Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT), has continued tightening road-safety rules to reduce accidents and improve visibility on the roads. Here is a clear summary of the most important changes and reminders for drivers going into 2026.

THE NEW EMERGENCY LIGHT (V16): NOW MANDATORY

1. There must be no oncoming traffic (i.e., the opposite lane is clear).

The biggest update is the arrival of the V16 connected emergency light, which replaces the old reflective triangles.

2. You must be able to safely give the required 1.5 m of lateral space to the cyclist.

From 1 January 2026, only approved, connected V16 lights will be valid, but the DGT strongly encourages motorists to start using them now. When you buy one make sure it is an approved version.

3. You should only move over if it’s safe — don’t attempt it if visibility is poor or there’s any risk.

Similar rules apply to for pedestrians, animals, or vehicles immobilised on the road

How it works • The light is magnetic and is placed on the roof of the car—so there is no need to step out into traffic.

• It emits a 360° flashing amber signal visible from up to one kilometre.

• Approved devices automatically transmit your location to the DGT’s traffic network, helping emergency services identify a breakdown more quickly.

DRINK-DRIVING: LIMITS, PENALTIES Spain maintains strict limits. The current limits are about to be reduced further to 0.2 g/L (0.1 mg/L in breath) for all drivers. This is less than a small beer or a small glass of wine Penalties range from heavy fines and points loss to criminal charges for more serious levels.

Penalties for Non-Compliance

There is no reliable conversion between alcohol units and legal limits. Factors like weight, sex, food intake and time make it impossible to guarantee safety.

Failing to carry a connected V-16 beacon will incur a fine of around €80.

Not signalling an emergency correctly (for example, in the event of a breakdown or accident) can result in fines of up to €200.

The DGT’s official recommendation is clear: “If you’re driving, don’t drink at all.”

OVERTAKING CYCLISTS: WHAT DRIVERS MUST DO

OTHER KEY RULES TO REMEMBER

Cyclists continue to receive strong legal protection on Spanish roads. When overtaking, drivers must:

• Mobile phones must never be held while driving. Even holding one without using it can result in sanctions.

• Leave a minimum of 1.5 metres between the vehicle and the cyclist.

• Overtake only when safe. If you cannot do so safely (e.g., limited visibility, oncoming vehicle), you must not attempt the maneuvre.

• Reduce your speed to 20 km/h below the posted limit

• Seatbelts are compulsory in all seats, including the back.

• Speed limits in many towns, villages and residential areas have been reduced to 30 km/h.

• Scooters and electric personal mobility vehicles face new rules, including bans on pavements and requirements for reflective equipment.

Penalties • If you don’t maintain the 1.5 m separation when overtaking a cyclist, there is a sanction of €200 and a deduction of 4 points from the driver’s licence.

AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST – ROUNDABOUTS Roundabouts drive us all crazy in Menorca. You must just be aware that, unlike in the UK, drivers in the outside lane are very likely be going all the way round to the final exit. It is no good arguing or getting angry. This is the way drivers are taught in Menorca. The inside lane is only for overtaking.

CAN YOU CROSS A SOLID WHITE LINE? Normally, crossing a solid (continuous) white line is prohibited.

However there is an exception for Cyclists: You are allowed to cross the solid white line to overtake a cyclist — but only under very specific conditions:

AIRPORT SUMMARY FLIGHT & PASSENGER TRENDS Passenger numbers stagnated at Menorca Aiport in July and August and September ended with 573,894 passengers, 4,670 fewer than the same month last year.

• Reduction is linked to: Loss of the Paris winter route.

Fewer seats on Barcelona and Madrid routes.

Smaller aircraft used by Air Nostrum (instead of Iberia Express).

MARKET BREAKDOWN (MAY–SEPTEMBER 2025)

Foment del Turisme claims seat losses are minimal, with 346,200 inbound seats, 0.4% more than last year. It says the declines on most winter routes are partly offset by more seats in early November & March.

• Spanish market: 31,664 fewer passengers (–2.4%) Continuous month-on-month falls since May. • British market: Early rise in May but four consecutive monthly declines since.

Total loss of ~22,000 passengers (–2.5%).

• Italian market: Strong drop of –8.6%.

• French market: Still booming: +17.1% and continuing to grow.

• German market: Slight growth of +3% in September.

• New growth market: Portugal: huge rise; in July–August there were 54,159 Portuguese passengers, surpassing Germany for the first time (+44.6%).

ROUTE OVERVIEW (6 WINTER ROUTES) • Palma: 76 weekly flights (increase) • Barcelona: 29–40 weekly depending on month (reduced in Jan–Feb) • Madrid: 15 weekly (same frequency, smaller planes) • Valencia: 5 weekly • Bilbao: 2 weekly (paused mid-Jan to late Feb) • London (EasyJet): 2 weekly; route guaranteed until 2027 • Paris: Route lost for the entire winter (no tickets on sale)

BRITISH ARRIVING EARLY IN 2026 British tourists are set to arrive in Menorca earlier than ever in 2026, with airlines massively increasing their April flight schedules. From the first week of April, ten UK airports will offer twelve direct routes to the island, totalling up to 27 weekly flights—a record for the month before the tourist season officially begins.

LATE SURGE IN OCTOBER 2025 • There was a surge in international travel in October, up 4.4 %. Domestic travel fell by 2.2 percent.

• In October 2025, the airport handled 358,328 passengers, which was a 1.6% increase compared to October 2024. 199,280 were on international routes.

This early push is driven by rising UK demand and strengthened co-marketing agreements with Menorca’s tourism board. Jet2, EasyJet and Ryanair all start operations earlier than last year, in some cases from late March. EasyJet leads with the largest April schedule, including up to nine weekly flights from Gatwick, plus new connections from Luton and Bristol. Jet2 expands to seven UK airports including Gatwick, while Ryanair begins flights from March 29 to East Midlands, Stansted and Manchester.

• Forecasts 755,000 seats, down 90,000 from last winter (–10.3%).

• Flights down 4.7%.

Overall the outlook for April 2026 suggests strong growth—while TUI UK remains the only major operator sticking to a May start.

ROSA CARDONA OLIVERAS DIRECTOR OF AGENCIA CARDONA (FEDERICO J. CARDONA TRÉMOL SL)

If you want to know what is happening in the Port of Mahón, there is no better person to speak to than Rosa Cardona, Director of Agencia Cardona. Her company is responsible for around 90% of the cruise ships, large yachts, ferries and cargo vessels that enter the port. She and her team manage all the paperwork, logistics and specialised services needed for vessels calling at Mahón. We visited Rosa to learn more about her work—she couldn’t have been more welcoming, or more passionate about the port her family has served for four generations.

Rosa left welcomes the Master of the Ship from Explora II on its maiden visit to Mahón.

A Family Legacy in the Port Roqueta: Rosa, your family history in the port stretches back a long way. Could you tell us how it all began?

Rosa: The company is now 142 years old, one of the oldest still operating, not just in Menorca but in the Balearics. My great-grandfather, Federico J. Cardona Alimundo, opened the agency in 1883 in the warehouses of the Moll dels Vapors, the old Steam Wharf. He handled the first cruise ships coming to Menorca and also served as Chancellor of the Italian Consulate.

Roqueta: And the business stayed in the family from generation to generation?

Rosa: Yes. After he died, my great-grandmother, María Thomas Robert, ran the agency until her son, Federico J. Cardona Thomas, was old enough to take over in 1934. Sadly, he died during the Civil War after being sent to the Peninsula. My father, Federico J. Cardona Trémol, was only five at the time. He worked with my grandmother from the age of fourteen and became director in 1958. My sister Neus and I have run the company since 1989.

Changes Through the Generations Roqueta: Your father must have seen enormous changes in his lifetime.

Rosa: Absolutely. When he began, people still travelled on steamships. Later came the rise of tourist cruises and major changes in port operations. He helped modernise the port—making operations safer and faster—and worked closely with Naviera Mallorquina, later Trasmediterránea and now Acciona.

Day-to-Day Operations and Ferries Roqueta: We caught you coming from the GNV Ferries ticket office. How broad is your role?

Rosa: We began handling GNV Ferries in 2021. So, in addition to the 6 members of staff in our office here on Moll de Llevant, we also run the GNV ticket office at the ferry terminal and we manage Corsica Ferries arriving in Ciutadella from Toulon. We are agents for 80% of the cruise ships and handle the tankers, military ships, megayachts and all kinds of visiting vessels—including the Italian ships that came for the Mahón fiestas. It’s a varied job!

Cruise Ship Trends Roqueta: There has been talk about cruise ship records being broken in Mahón. What is the real outlook?

Rosa: Earlier in the year it was said that 2025 would reach 133 visits, but weather and the collapse of the luxury line Alma Cruises caused cancellations.

ROQUETA WINTER 2025 Rosa: Everything—24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Excursions, transfers, medical equipment, flowers, repairs… once we even sourced grass turf for a megayacht. We thought it might be for golf practice, but it was for the owner’s pet!

Roqueta: Crew members also spend money locally…

Rosa: Yes, crews make up a huge part of the ship’s population. They go for tapas or shop for essentials, and this has a significant economic impact.

Beyond Mahón: Megayachts, Emergencies and Ciutadella Roqueta: Your work extends far beyond Mahón harbour.

Rosa: We assist megayachts all around Menorca as they often don´t come into Mahón. Sometimes emergencies arise—once an oil tanker in trouble 60 miles offshore needed large oil containers lifted aboard. I was ready to load a local boat and go, but regulations required that we found a correctly coded commercial vessel from Tarragona In the end, there were 105 cruise ship calls—still a 25% increase over 2024, when there were 84. The all-time record remains 120 in 2007, during the Gulf War when many cruise liners were re-routed here. We will always be limited by the size of ships we can accommodate. In Palma they have so many more options for larger cruise liners and Ibiza has been developing its berths over the last 7-8 years.

Roqueta: The MSC Musica has been the biggest visitor in recent years.

Rosa: Yes, for the last three seasons it’s been our biggest cruise ship. It carries 2,598 passengers and 915 crew, but it’s too large to dock, so it anchored off La Mola every ten days. We needed special authorisation to bring passengers ashore using the green catamarans which came each time from Mallorca. In 2026, however, it will be replaced by the smaller MSC Opera which can dock directly— much better for passengers who will have the freedom to come ashore when they want.

new visitors will include the Marella Explorer, Seven Seas Splendour, Silver Muse, and MS Marina and MS Vista. We expect 2026 to be similar to this year in terms of numbers, Fees, Logistics and Around-the-Clock Service Roqueta: How are fees structured for visiting ships?

Rosa: There are no fixed mooring fees by length.

Each ship pays rubbish tax to the Port Authority, according to gross tonnage and passengers, plus tourist taxes. They also pay for the pilot boat.

In reality, the cruise ships have their own water supplies and they do not always drop off rubbish.

We provide the rubbish truck or skips when needed but some items are prohibited in Menorca. For example, we do not have the facilities to process medical supplies or mattresses.

Roqueta: How far ahead are bookings made?

Port Authority rates are the same across the Balearics, but Mahón has had 40% discounts for 15 years to keep us competitive against Palma and Ibiza. At the low point before the discount we were only receiving 35 to 40 calls a year.

Rosa: At least two years. I already have 110 reservations for 2027 and 43 for 2028. In 2026,

Roqueta: Once a ship is in port, what do you and your team provide?

Weather Constraints and Operational Challenges Roqueta: Weather must be a constant factor.

Rosa: Definitely. Cruise ships cannot enter Mahón above 24 knots of wind; ferries are limited to 34 knots; the fuel tanker to 15 knots. And Mahón is unusual—cargo ships must travel deep into the interior of the harbour to unload. In other ports, these operations have been moved to outer docks, but we have few options unless we move them to an area near La Mola.

Cala Figuera and Port Improvements Roqueta: There is talk of developing Cala Figuera for superyachts. What is your view?

Rosa: Investors are interested but the project is huge and there are still no clear plans. Menorca currently lacks the specialised service companies needed for megayacht maintenance—mechanics and engineers for the huge Caterpillar engines must come from Palma. Cos Nou’s return to Nautic Center and Pedro’s Boat on a long term basis is positive, but they will need to invest in larger lifts and new equipment.

I think such a project must be broken down and divided into phases: land installations, moorings, and in-water works.

Roqueta: You’ve also had input into the plans for the new ferry terminal.

Rosa: Yes. I have been involved in finalising the plans, alongside the architects and structural engineers. The current Cala Llonga road project has taken over ten years to come to fruition. It is being widened so that it can accommodate the biggest trucks and wide loads. It will then become the main access road to the ferry terminal, and the old Cos Nou road will be closed off. They have also started installing the new connections which will allow the ferries to hook up to the local electricity grid and they will no longer have to run their engines in Port. This should solve the long running issue about noise at night.

The next stage is the redevelopment of the harbourside Moll de Ponent and Moll de Llevant. I encourage all businesses and residents to give feedback. We must plan carefully — the one-way system has caused many problems—and balance the needs of the residents, businesses and restaurants located in the Port as well as the companies providing services to boats. People need to get to work and to their houses so it is much more complicated than just designing a beautiful place for pedestrians to stroll along the harbour.

Customs and the Post-Covid Recovery Roqueta: You once acted as a customs agent. Do you still?

Rosa: There is no longer a customs agent in Menorca but we can still offer this service through a company in Palma, such as changing licence plates or paying VAT. Everything is online, and we can organise inspections if needed.

Before Spain was part of the EU we helped Menorca Cricket Club, S’Algar Diving and many other local companies to bring in equipment from the UK. More recently in the aftermath of Covid we helped Graham Byfield to get his sketchbooks shipped from Singapore to Menorca.

Roqueta: What have been your biggest challenges?

Rosa: COVID was hard. There was only one ferry per week and no cruise ships.

I feared we would not survive. When borders reopened, the weekly Toulon ferry and the arrival of megayachts saved us. I’ll never forget being on the gang plank and seeing the joy on the faces of those arriving in Menorca. When they opened the new ferry terminal in Ciutadella it was meant to be mainly for inter island traffic. However it now handles ferries to the mainland and cargo and this has had a negative impact on Mahón. I always remain optimistic. Our company has operated through wars and financial crises but somehow we always manage to survive.

Cruise Ships, and the Future Roqueta: There is sometimes criticism of cruise ships. What is your view?

Rosa: There is a general bias against large cruise ships, yet airport arrivals don’t receive the same scrutiny. I believe we must remain open to larger cruise ships—they allow people from all backgrounds, not only the wealthy, to arrive by sea.

As the Daily Mail recently said, Mahón is one of the best ports in the world to arrive by cruise ship. Sailing down a historic harbour and stepping off into a historic town is unique.

PEDRO PONS MAYOR OF FERRERIES

The municipality of Ferreries stretches from the wild beauty of Ets Alocs on the rugged north coast across the island to the beaches of Cala Galdana and Cala Mitjana. Santa Àgueda also lies within its boundaries, and the spectacular Algendar Ravine.

We met with Pedro Pons Huguet, born in Ferreries and Mayor since 2023, to discuss his career, current projects, and his vision for the future of the municipality.

You were born here in Ferreries. Can you tell us about your career?

Have you always worked in politics?

I was born in 1975 and grew up in Ferreries, but I haven’t always been involved in public service. For 12 years I worked as Retail Director at Jaime Mascaró S.A., travelling around the world and helping to set up new shops across mainland Spain, Portugal and the Canary Islands.

I entered local politics in 2012 with the People’s Party (PP), became a councillor, and in June 2023 I was elected Mayor of Ferreries. My current term lasts until 2027. My priorities are inclusivity, community engagement and the preservation of our local cultural heritage.

Roqueta has previously covered the plans to develop S’Enclusa, the former American communications base. Will the project finally go ahead?

Yes, after 30 years things are finally moving. Land clearance and cleaning of the buildings have already begun. We hope that by 2027 there will be a barbecue area open to the public. There are such wonderful views from the summit.

The giant dishes will remain as a monument to the past. There are eight buildings to clean up and refurbish, and each will have a different role: centres for the Biosphere Reserve, the Talayótica heritage, and Menorca Starlight; a residential centre for schoolchildren; a museum explaining the history of the base; and even an American-themed restaurant.

I strongly believed there should be a centre explaining the history of the base, and pushed hard for its approval. We have already begun gathering photographs, archives and testimonies from American personnel, civil servants and local residents. One of our local students, Julien Herrera, has completed an extensive project collecting many valuable stories and images.

The military left in the mid-1980s, but several American civil servants stayed until 1993 and became well integrated into the community. I remember them visiting our school and teaching us about baseball and American football. When we were about 10 or 11, we were invited to the base for lunch. We were amazed by the food and imported products—so different from our everyday lives. There were even marriages between American soldiers and two sisters from Ciutadella and one stayed to set up a hamburger restaurant.

The Consell has contacted the American Embassy, which is also keen to participate in preserving the historical record. The base played an important role in European communications, and there are even rumours that it contributed indirectly to the Moon Landings via its link to the main satellite station in Madrid.

One Ferreries resident worked as a chef on the base and he has founded a local library. If anyone has memories or contacts from that era, we would love to hear from them.

ROQUETA WINTER 2025 Jaime Mascaró is known around the world through its Pretty Balerinas brand and it employs around 180 people directly. Calzados Ría makes the authentic Menorcan avarques with the seal of origin and it employs about 50. We once had a thriving costume-jewellery sector, but now only two small producers remain.

Are you involved in the logistics to get tourists to the S’Enclusa site?

Yes. There is only space for around 30 cars at the summit, so we plan to create a parking area in Ferreries and run an electric shuttle bus service to the base. This will help manage visitor numbers and bring more people into the town.

The Municipality has a good number of agricultural and livestock farms producing milk, cheese, meat, vegetables, fruit and honey. We take pride in our gastronomy, and we have launched the “Gluten Free Ferreries” initiative to promote the town as an inclusive food destination. Several restaurants and shops are accredited thanks to the pioneering work of our master baker Lluís Febrer, who adapted his bread and pastries for people with food allergies. We organise workshops, events and tapas routes as part of the programme. We also hold a Bread and Sausage Fair in March, a Crafts and Food Fair in October and a Mushroom Fair each November.

Santa Àgueda also has great tourist potential. What are the plans?

I was up there recently. Development will be slower because we must ensure the archaeological site is studied thoroughly and protected. A new discovery was made only recently: an area thought to be an armoury may in fact be a secondary entrance to the castle.

Are there any other museum projects underway?

Yes. We are in discussions with the brothers Miquel and Joan Carreras, originally from Ferreries, who own one of the largest natural-species collections in Europe.

The 8,000 specimens are currently housed at Binissuès, but the space there is insufficient for proper display. We hope to create a dedicated Natural History Museum in Ferreries, which would also house the existing Geology Museum.

Can you explain how Cala Galdana is governed?

The municipality of Ferreries manages the beaches of Cala Mitjana and Cala Galdana, and the area up to the bridge across the river. Beyond the bridge is the responsibility of Ciutadella. In our zone we have the Melià hotel, three restaurants, and concessions for sunbeds, boat rentals and pedalos. Ciutadella controls the slipway for boat launches.

What plans are there for the local community?

We have a housing project funded by the Balearic Government to build 52 affordable rental flats in three areas of the town. They will be allocated to those most in need.

Parking has long been an issue, so for the past two years we have rented land to expand the parking area at the entrance to the resort. I live in Cala Galdana in summer and noticed that the signage only mentioned Cala Mitjana. I requested the signs be changed to “Parking for Galdana and Mitjana” to encourage visitors to park there and walk to the beach instead of crossing the bridge.

We are also planning ahead for demographic changes. The Geriatric Centre has told us that within 5–10 years we will need a new Day Centre. Our school system operates at full capacity: we have one nursery for 0–3 year-olds, two schools for ages 3–14, and our college for 14-18 year olds is full, partly because students come from Es Mercadal, which lacks its own institute.

How does your work as Mayor compare with your time at Mascaró?

The biggest difference is the pace. In the private sector, once a decision is made— like opening a new shop—things happen quickly. In public administration, everything moves more slowly.

How would you describe the local economy?

Ferreries has only one coastal resort—Cala Galdana—and an important and renowned shoe industry, giving us one of the most stable, year-round economies in the Balearics. There is far less dependence on seasonal workers compared with other municipalities.

I hope to remain in office beyond 2027 so I can see these exciting local projects through to completion. They will ensure Ferreries becomes a major draw for visitors to Menorca interested in its history and natural environment.

REFLECTING ON ANOTHER REMARKABLE YEAR OF RESTORATION, ART, AND COLLABORATION Each autumn, the Fundación Hospital Isla del Rey gathers its volunteers for a general meeting — a moment to reflect on the year’s progress, share ongoing projects, and plan for the future. After 21 years of tireless volunteer work, we have no lack of projects or ambitions, and activities on the island continue to grow.

THE HAUSER & WIRTH EFFECT Undeniably, the presence of Hauser & Wirth has changed the Isla del Rey. The image and worldwide fame of the Art Gallery have brought much attention to the island. This season, the art gallery welcomed over 72,000 visitors, nearly 9,000 of whom also took a guided tour of the historic hospital. Visitors’ words of appreciation, enthusiasm and their financial support (many making additional contributions) have helped us continue our work. Plans are already in place to increase the number of guided tours next year.

Beyond attracting visitors, Hauser & Wirth’s partnership contributes vital practical support — covering utilities, cleaning, security, and transport — ensuring the foundation’s work continues to thrive.

RESTORING THE PAST The ground floor of the old hospital is now virtually complete, featuring beautifully restored spaces such as two pharmacy rooms, Catholic and Anglican chapels, a surgery room, medical displays, library, the Sala Roma, and — after months of meticulous work — the Director’s rooms are now painted, floors varnished, and completed with a period style bathroom.

The first floor, which has become an Interpretation Centre for the history of Mahón Harbour, has also advanced significantly and will be finalised next year. Among its highlights is a new Corsairs Room, showcasing vivid imagery and stories of Menorcan privateers from the 18th and 19th centuries.

TREASURES OF THE MEDITERRANEAN In a sign of growing trust and recognition, the foundation has been loaned for three years what is probably the finest private collection of antique Mediterranean maps — the Iturriaga/Barbat collection. The exhibition includes around 240 maps, and many of them rare navigational charts. Work is ongoing to frame and prepare these valuable works for public display, with the exhibition set to open by early summer.

BUILDING FOR THE FUTURE Ongoing collaboration with Mahón Council remains key (they are after all the owners of the island). Plans are progressing for a lift between floors, improved exterior lighting for the whole building, and enhanced rainwater collection. The proposed ramp from the jetty is now being shelved and replaced by a lift to provide transport to the main level which we hope will be given the necessary permissons. We want the local council to be more involved and to provide practical support with the conservation of what has been restored.

One of the foundation’s most ambitious upcoming goals is the completion of the Warren Building — named both for our loyal and dedicated volunteer Ian Warren and the 18th-century builder Milbourne Warren. Once restored, it will house a large conference and event space, as well as essential storage. The project awaits approval from the multiple organisations who claim their role here: Island Council, Port Authority, Local Council, Cultural patrimony etcetera, after which a crowdfunding campaign will help bring it to life.

A VIBRANT YEAR OF ACTIVITY Beyond restoration, our Foundation continues to be a hub of cultural and social events — from wedding blessings and christenings to the Foro de Menorca, which this year explored French influence on the island. Volunteers even organised an excursion to Carloforte, Corsica, to honour “Mamma Mahón” or Fortuna Novella, who aided survivors of the Roma shipwreck.

Distinguished visitors have included Sir Alex Ellis, British Ambassador to Spain; Michel Magnier, French Consul to the Balearics; Manuel Valls, former French Prime Minister; and even Sian Lloyd, long-time ITV weather presenter.

THE HEART OF ISLA DEL REY The success of Isla del Rey is built on teamwork and dedication. Many volunteers contribute countless hours — not only on Sunday mornings but throughout the week in summer to help with tours and special events. We work as a team where each volunteer is important and valuable to us and new volunteers are warmly welcomed. If you can spare a few hours on a Sunday morning to lend a hand, the foundation would be delighted to have you join their remarkable community effort. CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS IN MENORCA

The festive season in Menorca is a wonderfully peaceful and atmospheric time, far removed from the hustle, bustle and commercial frenzy so often felt in the UK and other northern European cities. December days frequently bring bright sunshine and the chance to enjoy beaches and coastal paths without the heat of summer. With daylight lingering until around 17:30 and temperatures averaging around 10-16 degrees, island life moves at a relaxed but increasingly festive pace. Many hotels in the main towns remain open and restaurants offer everything from special menus to hearty local dishes—an ideal moment to savour Menorcan cuisine and immerse yourself in the island’s traditions.

The Build-Up to Christmas As in much of Spain, Menorca’s Christmas season has grown more commercial in recent years, influenced by international customs and an expanding winter calendar. By late November, shop windows begin to fill with festive treats, and once the street lights are switched on, towns and villages take on a cheerful glow.

Despite this, many traditions remain joyfully understated. Homes are decorated modestly, but one element stands firm: the belén, the family nativity scene, lovingly displayed and added to year after year. Christmas trees have become more common in homes, shops and public squares, and children today are just as excited about the arrival of Papá Noel as they are about the island’s true centrepiece celebration, the Reyes.

Throughout December, each municipality organises its own programme of events—carol concerts, family activities, children’s shows, and beautiful nativity displays in town halls and churches.

Lights, Markets and Community Celebrations In Mahón, the season officially begins on the first weekend of December with the much-anticipated arrival of Els Llumets. As darkness falls, four magical sprites descend on ropes from the bell tower of Santa Maria church to light the city, greeted by crowds of excited families. The moment the lights are switched on, Mahón’s festive spirit bursts into life.

Across the island, early December also brings the Fira de Nadal, traditional Christmas markets selling seasonal produce, crafts and handmade goods. Choirs rehearse, bakeries fill with the scent of festive pastries, and locals gather on sunny terraces for a pre-holiday drink.

Another beloved tradition is the performance of Els Pastorets, a classic nativity play reenacted by amateur theatre groups, often involving several generations of the same family. In contrast, the hauntingly beautiful medieval Cant de la Sibil·la is performed during special services—a moment of remarkable stillness in the midst of the festivities.

Christmas Eve and Christmas Day Christmas Eve—Nochebuena or Nit de Nadal—remains one of the year’s most important family gatherings. Early evening often includes nativity plays or drinks with friends before families come together for a festive meal. Many people then attend Midnight Mass, while younger generations continue the celebrations well into the night.

ROQUETA WINTER 2025 Christmas Day is more tranquil than in some countries. Increasingly, children receive a small gift from Papá Noel, and families enjoy a long, relaxed lunch followed by visits to relatives. It is a day of warmth and togetherness rather than large-scale festivity.

Boxing Day and the Festive Days Beyond Sant Esteve (26 December) is not a public holiday in Menorca, though many take the day to visit family. One unique tradition is the harbour swim in Mahón, where brave swimmers cross the port to the cheers of spectators.

New Year Festivities The days leading up to the New Year are filled with sporting events, including the colourful San Silvestre races where runners of all ages don fancy dress for evening circuits through the towns.

New Year’s Eve—or Noche Vieja—is celebrated with dinners, special menus, and lively street parties. At midnight, Menorcans follow the Spanish tradition of eating twelve grapes, one for each toll of the bell, to bring luck for the year ahead—a fun challenge that is much harder than it sounds!

New Year’s Day is a quiet public holiday before preparations begin for the island’s biggest winter celebration: the arrival of the Three Kings.

Reyes: Twelfth Night and Epiphany The evening of 5 January, Twelfth Night, marks the most eagerly awaited event for children in Menorca. The Reyes Magos—Caspar, Balthasar and Melchior— arrive in each town, sometimes by boat or on horseback, parading through the streets on beautifully decorated floats and distributing sweets to delighted crowds.

Children leave their shoes out in the hope that the Kings will fill them with gifts—though those who haven’t behaved may find sweet “coal” instead!

6 January, Epiphany, is the most important day of the season for Menorcan families. Children wake to their presents, and the Kings continue to visit hospitals to deliver toys. Another festive meal is shared, and with full hearts and homes, the holiday period finally draws to a close. Schools reopen the next day, and normal life resumes—until next year.

Sant Antoni 17th January: Diada del Poble de Menorca The 17th of January marks the Feast of Saint Anthony, which is a public holiday celebrated in a big way on all Balearic Islands. In Menorca, Sant Antoni commemorates the victory of King Alfonso III taking back Menorca from the Moors in 1287 after almost 400 years. All around the island, Sant Antoni is celebrated with special events including concerts, exhibitions, traditional dance, family entertainment, games, an outing of classic Menorcan fishing boats, street fairs, an official address by the local mayor, and special church services.

Tres Tocs One of Ciutadella’s most distinctive traditions during Sant Antoni is the Tres Tocs — the Three Knocks. This simple but solemn ritual marks the symbolic moment when the Moors were driven from Menorca in 1287, and the island was reclaimed under King Alfonso III of Aragón. The procession winds its way through the streets of Ciutadella ending at Ses Palmeres Square. Local dignatories participate and one performs the ‘Tres Tocs’ reenacting the troops’ entry before the city walls. If you visit the square you can find the exact place marked with a special stone.

Saint Anthony is also the patron saint of animals and locals bring their pets to be blessed by priests after Mass. Don´t be surprised to see all types of pets including hamsters and rabbits, dogs, cats, horses, chickens and the odd sheep.

Joventuts Musicals de Maó was founded over 50 years ago and its aim, both then and now, is to promote young musicians by giving them a chance to gain valuable experience by performing at local venues, as well as organising classical music concerts throughout the year.

We are pleased to announce that the Group Cantoría from will be performing at a special pre-Christmas concert to be held at the Santa María Church in Mahón on Sunday 7th December at 18.00.

Cantoría is a young vocal quartet from mainland Spain which specialises in the performance of vocal polyphony from the Iberian Renaissance.

Freshness, youth, and proximity have become distinctive features of the performances of this group, which is beginning to build a remarkable national and international career. The experience culminated in the concert “Symphony of goodbyes” at Teatre des Born and Teatre Principal de Maó

ON THE IMPORTANCE OF MUSIC

BY RACHAEL ADAMS at Canal Salat. We can barely see the stage, it’s not very warm and the acoustics are terrible. Air vents replace wood panelling. Ancient shields bearing coats of arms, and thick velvet curtains have become featureless breeze blocks. The only decent place to hear classical music in Ciutadella is the Teatre des Born - but the band, with up to 90 musicians, can’t all fit in there.

The lack of funding for music and the arts further extends to Ciutadella’s phantom, itinerant music school. The group is the second largest in the Balearics after Palma’s Conservatori, but they’ve been waiting for their own venue to rehearse for over 20 years. Students are currently based between a smattering of 5 buildings dotted around Ciutadella. Some have recently been ousted from the dilapidated Consell Insular building opposite the cathedral, to the Quadrado secondary school - which lends them the use of 8 rooms after classes.

Conversely, in Mahón they have the remarkable Teatre Principal de Maó, which is the only venue on the island fit for purpose, and the oldest opera theatre in Spain. It was built in 1829 because the Italians singers, en route to the mainland, would stop off and perform in Menorca first.

I’m told that rehoming the music school is always on the political agenda during campaigns, but that it is never prioritised once the new government get in. Apparently, culture is seen by our leaders as an expense rather than an investment. Nevertheless, an auditorium to showcase the talent of over 1200 students would be nice.

I’ve been stood up by my date for the Christmas concert by Ciutadella’s band. Not to worry - I know loads of people there anyway. As we all shuffle into the plastic chairs and fumble with coats and programmes, I spot the chemist from Los Pinos.

The couple that owns the library must be here somewhere too… ah there they are, I think smugly as I un-crane my neck. Settling in and inspecting the players likewise shuffling about on stage, I find my old music teacher from school. I recognise a couple of people I know from bashing the hell out of a dustbin with the Batucada street band at Sant Joan. And then there’s one of my best friends on the oboe - and he’s going to do the solo.

I talk to Vicent Salvador, the executive director of the Orquestra de Cambra Illa de Menorca (OCIM) and oboe teacher at the music schools. I want to know about the benefits learning music has on the mind. He tells me that our personality is formed in the first few years of our lives. “Learning to read music and play an instrument isn’t easy. It requires practice every single day.

Studying music therefore teaches that we must work hard to achieve results. It trains us in setting goals then sustaining the effort and concentration to reach them – which makes us more confident and dedicated as adults. Getting into the habit of daily rehearsal gives us organisational and time management skills that are also of great use later in life.”

For all Menorca is a tiny island, we have an extraordinarily high number of musicians.

Higher than the European average, to be precise. Despite a shocking lack of infrastructure, we boast a music school and band in each town, as well as a choir, marching band, chamber orchestra, and music therapy. The Christmas and New Year’s concerts can be hard to get tickets for. So, I feel very lucky and warm, nestled in amongst the homely crowd and seeing my friends make music.

Equally, he explains that parents singing to their children is very important. A couple of lullabies a night gives a child a sense of home, of safety and grounding. We now know that even before the foetus develops ears, it can detect the rhythm of Ziggy Stardust’s flamboyant vibrations permeating its mother’s belly. “Music sets us free and brings us great pleasure”, sums up Vicent.

As the players warm up, a frisson of excitement ripples across the audience. Music truly is the best thing humans ever did. Unfortunately, a large part of the festive effect is taken away by the fact we’re sitting in a concrete warehouse opposite the cinema 22

And it’s not just humans that benefit; some funny people from Oxford University have found that they can get their “Bach-choi” to grow bigger and leafier to his concertos than if they raise them on a diet of acid rock. Apparently, it’s the sound waves that somehow stimulate the plant cells: “these vibrations encourage nutrients to move throughout the plant, promoting new growth and strengthening their immune systems”. Elsewhere, roses enjoy the violin. This isn’t so weird if we think that nature is also musical, underpinned by rhythms and chords, harmony, pulses and tempos. As in birdsong, running water, heartbeats.

At the other end of the horticultural spectrum, the Chinese claim they can reduce pests in their greenhouses (possibly on their Bach-choi) by blasting them with “sound treatment”. Though they don’t specify exactly which (presumably tone-deaf) artist works best, the discordant garbling is said to disrupt the aphids from feeding. I bet Monsanto will be grooving all over that.

Back at the breezy theatre of cement, Vicent’s face is turning an ever - brighter shade of puce. Even with his training, it seems to take tremendous amounts of puff to get such beautiful notes from his oboe. I marvel at the speed of the violinist’s fingers next door. The bassoons remind me of warbling toads.

These people’s abilities are supernatural. My neighbours have their chins resting on their chests and their eyes closed, engrossed. And it doesn’t matter where they play, there’s extra joy in knowing so many of their faces, I think as I nod to my chemistry teacher on the way out.

So regardless of a pervasive lack of funding for culture and the arts, I doubt anyone can deny the importance of music in our lives. It gives shape to emotions that would otherwise remain formless, providing an outlet for grief, longing, and joy. Music roots us in a time and a place. It can return us instantly to a lost friend, a teenage adventure, a country or our first love. And concerts in particular can unite people across all designations. Sharing the music, the audience becomes one intimate unit, in on a secret experience. In this case, a Christmas community.

I’d like to end this article with an exclamation from a woman sitting next to me at Steven Moore’s recent percussion concert in England. We were being subjected to the full 13 minutes of Minoru Miki’s “Marimba Spiritual”.

The piece is written in anger about the famines in Africa, in 1983. The musicians are wearing simple black t-shirts. One of the drummers is tall, lanky and is wearing his long black hair in a knot on top of his head, raising him to around 8 ft tall.

For the first half there’s a lot of ping-ponging on the marimba, with only the slightest of interventions from the drums. Yet the tall dude was stretching his arms (and legs) in grand fast sweeping motions, visibly agitated, only to then place his mallet ever so delicately on the drum. Why was he so excited?

What was he building up to? We tinkled along in curious confusion for a bit until suddenly, halfway through, the full power of the drummers kicked in...

And they ROOOOARED at their instruments! Now the arms were flying, as was the hair, bobble flung helplessly across the room. Audience blasted helplessly against their seats. They screamed blue murder at their drums, while pummelling harder and faster, visceral shrieks belt forth as they reach their bodies back, hands thrown high above their shoulders, then dive forward into the onslaught.

And then, just as suddenly, it ended. I noticed I was sweating and had wet eyes. The lady on my right was doing little hops and gasping. We stood up on jelly legs. Then the stately dame on my left turned to me, paused midclap, palms upwards, and beamed with pizzazz, “live music”.

EATING With winter approaching—or at least the cooler months—many of our favourite busy restaurants and cafés are taking a well-deserved break after another hectic summer. It’s now the perfect time to seek out some lovely local cafés that stay open. These are places where you can embrace the Menorca way of life during the winter months! November, it seems, is when many restaurants pause; some will reopen for Christmas and New Year, so it’s the ideal time for a short break, even if just for a week or so.

I feel privileged to live in the lovely community of the village of St Climent.

We have a fabulous local café, The Casino, which reliably provides all the locals with delicious breakfast, lunch, and dinner all year round. The menu is extensive, the staff are charming, and the family who own it also run a taverna down the road. Sa Taverna is usually full of locals and serves what I think of as approachable, well-priced tapas.

I love that these places are full of Menorcans yet warmly welcome those of us trying to be “wannabe locals”—and we genuinely enjoy being part of the local scene! Sa Taverna has what I suppose, in UK terms, would be the classic old-pub feel: no bells and whistles, just what you see is what you get. What’s not to love?

I haven’t had the chance to explore many other local cafés that stay open all year, but my advice is: if you see a group of locals drinking a beer at 10a.m.—PERFECT! Well, sort of perfect—it’s probably the best, most chilled-out, and fun place to be during the winter months.

This month we have the traditional round up of restaurants open over the winter months. A few more than usual are closing for a break this year, and some are refurbishing and others moving. Some say they are closing for good, but you can never be too sure as they can change their minds! Here is what we know as we go to press.

The major news is the Sa Punta has closed for the first time in Winter. But do not despair as their wonderful Amapola Café and bakery is now open for lunch every day. We have already tried most things on the menu – see below. Il Porto is moving at last and by the time you read this they should be up and running in their new home – the former Way and Hammetts Mestizo building. The opening is planned for 28th November in time for all the office Christmas parties. We will miss the old Il Porto but look forward to something new. Peter and Elaine were treated to the tasting menu at Amagatay and tell us all about it. Augustin/Candela has been a favourite this season and Jo tells us why.

They continue to serve very tasty and healthy breakfasts and now also lunches from noon. There is a varied selection of nutritious dishes at very affordable prices, all around 10 to 12 Euros. In addition, you can make a menu: a main dish and dessert/coffee + drink for only €16 which is superb value for such high quality food.

We visited twice with groups of friends so that we could try several dishes. John first chose the cream of roasted pumpkin soup with Xeixa bread pangratato and black olives. This was a deliciously thick soup with the pangratato balanced on the top. We ordered a basket of the freshly baked sourdough to accompany our meal. I chose the Pasta salad with pesto, artichokes, rosted peppers and kalamata olives. On our second visit I enjoyed the quiche with cucumber and yoghurt salad, while others opted for the winter warmers of veal stew with smoked potato parmier, herb braised chicken with gnocchi, and French onion soup topped with a generous Mahón cheese gratin toast. For dessert you can indulge in a large slice of carrot cake, chocolate cake or cheescake or a warm chocolate and raisin pudding.

On warm winter days you can sit on the terrace or climb the stairs for a picture perfect view of the harbour through the window. Amapola has all the elegance of Sa Punta in miniature. And don´t forget to take home a freshly baked sourdough loaf or two. Take a tip from our fiend Nina Hammond and pop a loaf in the freezer.

ROQUETA WINTER 2025 BAR MARCELINO (CAN VERMUT) Mercat des Claustre, Local 2, 07701, Mahón Open Thursday to Sunday 18:00–24:00; also at lunchtime on Saturdays and Sundays 12:30–16:00 Bar Marcelino is located in the Mercat des Claustre, along the route to the lift from the horse statue. It was opened in 2024 by the owners of Can Vermut, in the port, which has been doing a brisk trade in picnics for boats this summer. At Marcelino the menu is written on a chalkboard. The famous “Marcelinos” combine smoked eggplant, and potato salad with octopus. We went with Reni, a frequent visitor and foodie, and she chose a a fennel salad with avocado, which was fresh and delicious, the Thai meatballs which were creamy with a spicy hit, and a silky aubergine dish topped with creamy burrata. The bar staff are very welcoming and it is the perfect place to enjoy some special tapas and their signature sandwiches with the locals.

BAR AUGUSTIN/CANDELA

By Jo Eames A Favourite Mahón Spot There’s one place we immediately gravitate to each time we return to Mahón (and repeatedly thereafter). That’s Candela/Bar Augustin, a small neighbourhood place with the best “watching the world go by” position in Plaça de España, opposite the markets. Daniel Molero has served his time around Europe working in some fine kitchens, lastly as executive chef for the Torres brothers in Barcelona – and has earned his own place, a small kitchen pass where he cooks what he likes, the way he likes it. The place started even smaller, after the pandemic, with a single shopfront. When they doubled the frontage, absorbing the place next door, they called the bar side Augustin and the bistro Candela. When I asked why, they told me Dani’s grandfather had a restaurant with the same name. It’s a sweet tip of the hat.

S’ATURADETA JARDINS Avinguda de Josep A. Clavé, 388, 07703 Mahón Open from Wednesday to Saturday 13:00–16:00 and 20:00–22:30, Sunday 13:00–16:00, closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.

Situated on the Mahón to San Lluis Road, this restaurant has proved a big hit with locals and foreign visitors. In winter it is packed full of Menorcans at lunch time and so it is best to book. Manel and David have designed a clever menu with something for everyone, with traditional tapas to share and a selection of meat, fish and rice dishes. Our favourites include marinated tuna loin with pistachio crust, mango chutney, wasabi, and white chocolate for 25,00€ (although some forego the chocolate), the Iberian pork cut (pluma) with their famous handmade fries, for 21,50€ and the Confit cod with potato puree, caramelized apple, sobrasada oil, and honey for 21,00€. There is a pretty terrace for summer and a cosy fire inside for winter. It is open all winter and is popular for office outings and group lunches and dinners.

A Menu of Regulars and Specials The menu is short, consisting of two lists: one of tapas, the indispensable regulars; and one of “specials”, although some of these are constants too – and their many fans would be disappointed not to see them on the board. The specials vary in size. Slow-cooked Lamb Shank in a rich jus with puréed potatoes (that remind me of Joel Robuchon’s famously butter and cream-laden dish) is enough for two of us. Whereas the Camasecas Carbonara – a bowl of wild mushrooms in a rich egg, bacon and cream sauce – is not a bowl I’m willing to share a morsel of.

If in doubt, Ruben or Patti out front are happy to describe the dishes.

In Mahón you can also visit their smaller restaurant, S’aturadeta near to the football ground on Avinguda de Josep A. Clavé, 54. If you are lucky they will have one of their delicious oxtail dishes on the menu but all the food is prepared with passion and dedication, using fresh ingredients and to bring out the authentic flavours.

Wine, Service and Personality The food comes on vintage crockery and arrives quickly but not (as Eric Morecambe might have said) necessarily in the right order. The wine list specialises in lowintervention wines. 20 years in the wine trade did not convince me of the joys of unfiltered, unstable wines, and some of Patti’s choices definitely tiptoe into funky territory. I leave them to the young and credulous – the negronis are good and the Viejoven house white is a bespoke collaboration with a winemaker, excellent for the price. If small plates, dishes coming out as they’re cooked and natural wines are restaurant tropes that leave you cold, then Candela may not be for you.

But if you salivate at the idea of a handful of perfectly light and juicy Buñuelos de bacalao (cod & potato beignets). Of Torreznos, their crunchy super-salty pork belly cubes with a lime and hoisin dressing. Of Piparras, fresh guindilla peppers in tempura batter with a ponzu sauce (a tingling, turbo-padron pepper sensation).

Or of a light puff pastry Coca topped with tomato sauce and shining silver sardine fillets, then there’s nowhere else in Mahón to go for them.

What Makes Candela Special Michelin has recently included a mention of Candela (one of four places tipped in Mahón, alongside El Rais, El Romero and the kitchen at Christine Bedfor) but it isn’t this that makes me cherish it. What’s special is to find cooking of this quality, this idiosyncratic, this full of heart, in a beautiful spot, just around the corner.

Third Course — Xeixa La Marcona Bread The most amazing wheat bread, served with a wooden platter of Amagatay olive oil and herbs from the garden.

Fourth Course — Cor de Bou Tomato We dipped the bread into the next dish (and Elaine’s favourite) of Cor de Bou Tomato - roasted tomato blossom with marjoram, dolcamar, wild flower honey, anchovy garum and topped off with grated Mahon cheese. A wonderful culinary example of Argentina meets Menorca !

AMAGATAY

By Elaine and Peter Martin A Warm and Exceptional Experience We had a truly exceptional experience at Amagatay, meeting most of the team, who were fantastic in everything they did. The staff’s dedication and enthusiasm played a significant part in making our stay special. Amagatay clearly prioritises excellent customer service and has assembled a fantastic team to deliver on that promise.

Amagatay is a refuge among olive trees and ancient stone, where time slows down to preserve the peace and authenticity of Menorca.

Access to Amagatay and its restaurant, EL OLIVAR, is an experience in itself, beginning with the majestic entrance gate. Upon arrival, guests can stroll to the bars or restaurants or enjoy a leisurely golf-buggy ride driven by the friendly reception team.

Fifth Course — Boletus Mushroom Boletus cooked “bone-marrow style”: flash-fried in butter with hazelnut huancaína, a classic Peruvian sauce. Quite delicious.

EL OLIVAR EL OLIVAR is the restaurant within Amagatay. The food is designed by the award winning chef José María Boras —born and bred in Menorca — and Laura Palaiakis from Argentina. Their mission is to put the planet first. Sustainability and respect for local produce and traditional techniques are central to their approach. They say that each dish is woven between nature and the customer.

Sixth Course — Carabinero Tagliatelle & Coral Velouté Peter’s favourite: with radish, lime, a touch of spicy togarashi and sea fennel sourced by the chef who discovered it growing on the Camí de Cavalls.

EL OLIVAR not only respects the environment; it enhances it, supporting regenerative agriculture, sustainable fishing and zero-waste practices. They say that each dish is woven between nature and the customer.

The EL OLIVAR Tasting Menu We had been treated to the tasting menu — a gift from our son Jon and his wife Marie-Françoise — priced at €85 per head. With the weather not at its best, we ate inside in the intimate restaurant filled with rustic charm.

The restaurant team were knowledgeable, friendly and attentive, with the chef taking time to talk us through the menu.

First Course — “Gilda” Aperitif Our taste buds were awakened by an aperitif served in a shot glass: skewered Amagatay olives, anchovies and a spiced pepper. Unusual, enjoyable flavours — a typical Menorcan apéritif called Gilda.

Seventh Course — Lamb Sweetbreads An Argentinian favourite — roasted lamb sweetbreads, boiled then fried in very hot butter, served with roasted lime halves.

A CATALAN SEAFOOD STEW

During my time as a Private Chef, and while working in a local bar-restaurant in Son Parc, Zarzuela was by far the favourite dish among clients and customers.

And it even sounds tempting:

Zarrrrrr-zuuuuu-elllla!

This Catalan seafood stew is aptly named after zarzuela, a lively Spanish musical theatre genre that blends many contrasting styles of music and dance — much like this dish blends a variety of fish and shellfish.

One of the beauties of this stew is its versatility. You can use your favourite seafood, fresh or frozen, or a mixture of both. I always use the freshest fish available that day.

Zarzuela can be served as a starter or as a hearty main course in a large bowl for guests to dive into.

Firstly let’s make the Picada Sauce.

This sauce acts as a thickening agent and is packed with flavour.

PICADA SAUCE A flavour-packed thickening base INGREDIENTS 3 cloves garlic, peeled and chopped ½ cup ground almonds 2 slices fried bread, crusts removed and cut into croutons 2 tbsp finely chopped fresh parsley ½ cup fish stock METHOD Simply blend all ingredients together — a jug and stick blender works perfectly.

Cover and set aside until required.

ZARZUELA DE MARISCOS INGREDIENTS ¼ cup olive oil 1 large onion, finely chopped 1 small red chilli, finely chopped (optional) 2 cloves garlic, minced 1 small toasted red pepper, diced 1 tbsp tomato paste 100 ml dry white wine 50 ml brandy 1 tin chopped tomatoes 750 ml good fish stock 12 mussels, scrubbed and bearded 12 clams, scrubbed 12 prawns, peeled and deveined 500g white fish (monkfish, hake, cod) 2–3 sea bass fillets (optional) 30

8 large prawns, peeled with tails left on, deveined (optional) 200g fresh squid, cut into 1 cm rings 1 tbsp smoked paprika Salt and pepper 1 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped, to garnish Crusty bread, to serve METHOD 1. In a large saucepan or wok, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the onions and cook until transparent but not coloured. Add the freash chilli if using.

2. Pour in the white wine and brandy and reduce by half.

3. Add the garlic, smoked paprika, and tomato paste; cook for 1 minute.

4. Stir in the tinned chopped tomatoes and the fish stock. Bring to the boil, then simmer for 15 minutes.

5. Season the prawns, squid, and fish. Add them to the pot along with the mussels and clams.

6. If using sea bass fillets or large prawns, pan-fry these separately now.

7. Cover the pot and cook for 8–10 minutes, ensuring all the shells have opened and the fish is cooked through.

8. Stir in the Picada Sauce and cook out gently for a few minutes more. Season to taste.

9. Ladle into serving dishes and top with the panfried sea bass or prawns (optional).

10. Finish with chopped parsley and serve with plenty of crusty bread.

CHICKEN & PRAWN COCONUT CURRY Winter is almost here, and this is a perfect warming curry for cooler evenings. I like to measure out all the ingredients before starting — it makes everything flow smoothly.

INGREDIENTS

METHOD

Protein & Base

1. Prepare your aromatics If you have a micro-planer, grate the garlic and ginger into a paste. Otherwise, chop very finely or use a small blender.

2. Prep the chicken Cut the chicken breasts into bite-sized pieces.

3. Brown the chicken Heat the oil in a medium/large pot and brown the chicken. Remove and set aside.

4. Cook the onions Using the same pot, gently fry the onions until they start to change colour. Add the garlic and ginger and cook for another 2 minutes.

5. Add the spices Once the mixture begins to catch slightly, stir in the spices. Cook for 1–2 minutes — don’t let them burn or they’ll turn bitter.

6. Build the sauce Add the chopped tomatoes and water. Simmer gently on a medium heat for about 30 minutes.

7. Add protein & coconut milk Return the chicken to the pot, add the prawns, and pour in the coconut milk. Cook for 15 minutes on medium heat, making sure it doesn’t boil.

• 2 chicken breasts • 200g shelled prawns • 400g tin chopped tomatoes • 100ml water • 1 tin coconut milk • 2 handfuls spinach Aromatics • 1 white onion, finely chopped • 4 cloves garlic (grated or finely chopped) • 3cm piece ginger (grated or finely chopped) Spices • 2 tbsp sunflower oil • 2 tsp cumin powder • 2 tsp coriander powder • 2 tsp turmeric powder • 1 tbsp red curry powder (Optional additions: a few cardamom pods, 1 tsp fennel seeds, dried chillies for extra heat.)

8. Finish with spinach Stir in the spinach at the end — the heat of the curry will wilt it in seconds.

HOW I COOK THE RICE I use 2 cups basmati to 4 cups water with a pinch of salt.

Bring it to the boil and let the water cook away.

When you hear the rice start to crackle, turn off the heat, pop on a lid, and leave it for 20 minutes to steam.

VARIATIONS • Chicken-only version Skip the prawns.

• Fish curry Make the sauce as above (without chicken), then gently poach the fish in the simmering sauce so it doesn’t overcook.

• Vegan curry Try butternut and chickpeas — they work beautifully with this base.

• Smooth sauce option Stick-blend the sauce before adding your protein for a silky finish.

• Traditional touches Cardamom and fennel can be added to the hot oil before the onions. Growing up in South Africa, we always served sliced banana on the side as a sambal.

A PLASTIC FREE GROWING COMMUNITY Across Menorca, a powerful community movement is taking shape — one that aims to tackle one of the island’s most persistent environmental challenges: plastic pollution. From beaches and harbours to schools and local businesses, more and more people are working together to reduce single-use plastics and protect Menorca’s natural beauty.

ISLA DEL AIRE: A HEAVEN FOR BIRDS, FLORA AND ENDEMIC WILDLIFE In 2025, Menorca Preservation (MeP) and the TUI Care Foundation joined forces with a threeyear collaboration through the Destination Zero Waste Menorca programme, supporting two of Menorca Preservation’s flagship initiatives: the Plastic Free Menorca Alliance and PescArt Menorca. Together, these projects are showing how collaboration, creativity, and commitment can turn environmental ambition into real, measurable progress.

CLEANER BEACHES, STRONGER COMMUNITY One of the year’s highlights has been the Plastic Free Beach pilot project in Punta Prima, developed with the Sant Lluís Town Council. Its aim: to make Punta Prima the island’s first plastic-free beach — a place where awareness, education and practical change come together.

Throughout the summer, the Plastic Free Menorca team organised community activities and clean-up days, removing more than 2,300 pieces of litter, including almost 1,900 cigarette butts. In addition, Plastic Free Menorca has installed information boards next to the beach, offering tips on sustainable habits, a beach item reuse point to encourage sharing beach items such as buckets and spades and umbrellas, and a filtered-water fountain promoting refill culture and the reduction of single-use plastics.

Beyond Punta Prima, ten clean-up actions across the island brought together 379 volunteers and students, who collected 116 kgs of plastic waste. These efforts not only improved the landscape but also provided valuable data for the Alliance’s Plastic Observatory, a pioneering platform that gathers information on plastic use and waste to guide future action and policy.

The partnership reflects a growing awareness that tourism and conservation can — and must — go hand in hand. With over a million people visiting Menorca each summer, even small improvements in habits and infrastructure can have a major impact. By engaging hotels, tour operators, and local councils, this initiative encourages a shared responsibility for preserving the island’s delicate balance between prosperity and conservation.

This approach resonates deeply with Menorca’s UNESCO Biosphere Reserve ethos, which calls for harmony between people and nature. The initiative demonstrates that sustainability isn’t just an environmental goal — it’s a way to ensure the island’s identity, economy, and future remain strong and vibrant.

This growing sense of collective responsibility — from schoolchildren learning about marine ecosystems to visitors making small but conscious choices — is proving essential.

Step by step, Menorca’s community is redefining what sustainable island living can look like.

LOOKING AHEAD As the first year of Destination Zero Waste Menorca comes to a close, both MeP and TUI Care Foundation are already planning the next steps. Future priorities include strengthening the Plastic Free Beach model and scaling up creative collaborations like PescArt to involve more artisans and young people, with a particular focus on our PlasticLab, a community plastic recycling/upcycling centre. An exciting and innovative project that should provide new opportunities to convert waste to useful and beautiful new items.

TURNING WASTE INTO ART AND OPPORTUNITY So far in 2025 (up to November), PescArt Menorca has continued to grow, proving that sustainability can go hand in hand with creativity and inclusión: 4,590 kgs of fishing nets were recovered, with 1,303 kgs recycled, alongside 42 umbrellas and 16 wetsuits.

The vision is ambitious yet simple: an island where plastic waste is no longer seen as inevitable, but as a challenge that inspires innovation, community pride, and environmental leadership. What began as a single partnership is now a movement — a plastic free growing community that reflects the very best of Menorca’s spirit: collective, resilient, and hopeful.

These materials have been given a new life through the work of 35 local artists and craftswomen, who transform marine waste into unique products and art pieces. The initiative not only prevents harmful waste from ending up in our landfill, which needs to significantly reduce the waste being buried to extend its useful life or the sea, but also supports local livelihoods and brings visibility to Menorca’s creative talent.

Menorca Preservation was created and established in the island in late 2017. To date, we have awarded over 1,4 MILLION € to over 95 local environmental projects on the island.

HAUSER & WIRTH REVIEW 2025 The Hauser & Wirth gallery on Isla del Rey closed its fifth season in October. This year 72,468 people visited the facilities, bringing the total number of visitors to 330,739 since the space opened in 2021.

This year, the work of Mika Rottenberg and Cindy Sherman was presented, and, in addition to the general public, 88 school groups visited, totaling around 1,557 students. In addition, activities took place, many of them in collaboration with other entities such as the Trobades i Premis Albert Camus 2025, the Escola Superior d’Arts Dramàtiques de les Illes Balears, the Xarxa de Biblioteques de Menorca and 78i Dansa, among others.

More than 1,500 attendees have participated in the programme of cultural and educational activities, such as a movement workshop with the writer Ana Haro, a reading club with Jara Sánchez, an outdoor cinema series, talks with Es CRANC Festival, a concert in collaboration with ME _ MMIX Festival, a performance by Hector Ferrer and Kora Leiva Gnonnas, vermouth concerts with Es Claustre, family workshops or guided tours.

SEDIMENTARY IDENTITIES AT FUNDACIÓ NUMA For the first time, Fundació Numa has an off-season exhibition: Sedimentary Identities, which is on view until 20 December.

This is an excellent opportunity for those busy in the summer season to take a trip to Ciutadella to visit the Foundation.

The project, created by Theresia and Jeroen Malaise, proposes a dialogue between painting and music around the construction of identity. Theresia, a Belgian artist based in Menorca, and her brother, musician and composer, present a collaboration that will be accompanied, as is usual at Numa, by a programme of parallel activities.

The exhibition includes eight large-format paintings by Theresia Malaise, and five original musical pieces composed by Jeroen Malaise — featuring work on traditional folk music created with the fandango group Tramuntana from the Sa Quintana neighbourhood— and a participatory installation developed with artificial intelligence.

Numa explains that the exhibition reflects on identity as a living process, built and transformed over time through layers that accumulate: the territory we inhabit, the memory we share, and the cultural influences that shape us.

“In Sedimentary Identities, this idea takes on both visual and sonic form: just as rock gathers sediments over the years, identity also forms gradually, layer by layer. In Menorca, the winds —constant agents of change in the landscape— become a metaphor for an open and evolving identity.

Theresia Malaise is a painter trained in Belgium and Spain, with a career marked by an intense exploration of the past and identity, with exhibitions and awards in Spain. Menorca, has filled her palette with light and colour, leaving behind the black that characterised her first works; now the masses of color float in space, creating a mosaic of superimposed layers, just as memory does.

The eight works presented at NUMA are named after the winds that cross Menorca (Tramuntana, Migjorn, Llevant, Ponent, Gregal, Xaloc, Mestral and Llebeig) and translate into textures and chromatisms the experience of walking, observing and inhabiting our landscape.

Jeroen Malaise is a pianist, composer and teacher at the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp, he has performed on international stages such as the Wiener Konzerthaus, the Royal Opera House in London or the Beijing Festival.

For Sedimentaciones identitarias, Jeroen has created five musical pieces for the exhibition. Four of them are inspired by the winds - based on a dialogue with his sister’s paintings, while a fifth incorporates the fandango as a communal expression rooted in the territory.

The fandango is one of the main threads in his research on how music is born, travels and transforms. Jeroen connects Mediterranean roots with experiences in North Africa, Turkey, Palestine or Cordoba, where he identifies in flamenco the origin of the fandango. Each influence is added as another layer, a sonorous sediment that builds identity. In this way, his compositions resonate with the idea of personal layers in constant movement, open to new transformations.

WHERE CONSCIENTIOUS CRAFTSMANSHIP AND A COMMITMENT TO COMMUNITY CREATE EXCEPTIONAL PRODUCTS The GoMenorca team had the honor of touring the Pons Quintana Factory in Alaior with two friends visiting from San Francisco in October. Pons Quintana is, without a doubt, one of Menorca’s most iconic businesses, known for its commitment to craftsmanship and community, and has been a valued partner of Go Menorca since its founding.

Menorca, but from the village of Alaior itself. The feeling of family, community, tradition and pride in craftsmanship was very much alive. The tour was not only interesting, but inspiring to see that a company that deeply values community, its workers and a high level of craftsmanship not only exists, but is flourishing.

Santi, the grandson of the founder of Pons Quintana and a key member of the PQ Team, was kind enough to offer us a factory tour in English, which was fantastic. We walked the floor of the factory, observing and learning about the many impressive facets of Pons Quintana’s diverse line of artisanal, handmade, fashionable products, ranging from ankle boots and high heels, to luxurious hand bags and stylish flats.

Despite its humble locale, nestled in the residential old town of Menorca’s third largest municipality of Alaior, Pons Quintana has become one of Spain’s most well-known footwear and accessories brands, known for its high level of artisanal tradition and quality materials.

The story of Pons Quintana begins in 1953 in Alaior, Menorca, when Santiago Pons Quintana established a small shoe-making workshop. Initially the focus was on children’s It was very refreshing to learn during the tour that almost footwear, and in 1956 they began producing slippers. In all of the artisans working at the factory are not only from 1968 the company built a dedicated factory on the island, 38

By 1990, the Pons Quintana family had grown to more than one hundred employees. Today, Pons Quintana remains a worldrenowned yet family-run business, led by the next generation, the founder’s children, Magda and Santiago, and grandchildren, Carlos, Nuria, Santi and Gabriela.

“Our mission is to create handcrafted and durable footwear that follows the most exclusive fashion trends without losing its commitment to comfort and elegance,” Pons Quintana states on their website.

Central to Pons Quintana’s appeal is its use of high-quality materials and production techniques, especially their hand woven/leather braid techniques. Leather strips are carefully intertwined by hand to create specific patterns and designs, following traditional techniques passed down from generation to generation.

The level of detail and thought put into each product is evident as you walk the factory floor and even more so when you see Pons Quintana’s gorgeous finished products, on display in the factory’s Boutique Store and in their stores in Mahón, Ciutadella, Santo Tomas and Madrid.

Pons Quintana is a true example of Slow Fashion, a sustainable and ethical approach to clothing that prioritises quality, fairness, and environmental responsibility over mass production and trends. Slow Fashion promotes buying fewer, better-made garments that last longer, made from natural or recycled materials by workers paid fair wages in safe conditions. Overall, it’s a movement that aims to reduce waste, protect the planet, and reconnect consumers with the story and care behind what they wear.

He is perhaps best known for his Shackle Watch, a project that took him three years to complete. He made 30 watches, and most have found new homes around the world in Australia, Scotland, and Mallorca. Each Shackle Watch N1 is a unique piece, meticulously hand-assembled and equipped with a high-precision Seiko movement, sapphire crystal, and a watertight design, making it suitable for nautical environments. ROQUETA WINTER 2025 Pedro’s parents owned the S’Escopinya shop in Es Castell, and he and his wife now own S’Escopinya on Carrer de ses Moreres, which sells Thomas Sabo and other wellknown brands. He spent his life buying and selling jewellery from Menorca, but he realised it was going to get harder in the global market. This was when he branched out into gifts with Barba-Rossa. However, during Covid he discovered his creative side when he set up a workshop at his house and, starting with pencil drawings, began designing his own range of jewellery inspired by his favourite music.

The idea of making his own collections really took off when a friend with a chain factory in Menorca saw what he had in the shop and told him he could make it in Menorca.

This was a life-changing moment. “Menorca used to be like the China of Europe for jewellery manufacture. They were making large-quantity orders and were not interested in small volumes. It was at this moment I realised that times had changed and I could get my designs made here on the island.”

SASGA YACHTS: MENORCA’S LEAP INTO THE SUPERYACHT LEAGUE Sasga Yachts, owned by the Sastre family, is gearing up for a major expansion— professionalising operations, targeting new markets and entering the superyacht category with vessels from 24 metres upwards. The goal: to cement Menorca’s place on the world nautical map.

GRAPEVINE PETER JONES - THE GUITAR GUY Unable to afford top-end electronic drum kits, Peter and his electronics-engineer brother designed and built their own. The kits were so successful that they formed a company and sold them commercially. Their work soon caught the attention of Warren Cann from Ultravox — one of Peter’s favourite bands — who commissioned and bought several products for their tour. These included a redesign of the iconic synth-drum pads featured on Ultravox’s huge hit Vienna.

The climax of each Ultravox concert was a dramatic four-man drum solo. Peter and his brother engineered a special set of virtually indestructible drum pads to withstand the nightly onslaught. The band also used Peter’s products during their 1985 Live Aid performance. Warren and Peter remain close friends.

A Lifelong Bond with Spain Peter’s connection with Spain began when he met a Spanish exchange student visiting the music shop — sparking a two-year romance and an enduring passion for the country. He threw himself into learning the language, eventually teaching beginner Spanish classes.

His IT work at Musical Exchanges included creating websites for both the store and its guitar manufacturing partner, Patrick Eggle Guitars. This experience later allowed him to swap his music-based career for the more stable — and more lucrative — world of IT. Family Life and the Move to Menorca Peter met his wife Jo, originally from Stourport, in 1994 at a gig. After a few months together, they booked their first holiday and chose Menorca — the start of a lifelong love affair with each other and the island.

In 2018 they bought a holiday home in Son Parc. During COVID, Jo was furloughed from her Ministry of Defence job, and the couple made the bold decision to move to Menorca permanently. Jo set up her own cleaning business, and Peter followed six months later, working remotely for a multinational IT company.

Two years ago, they moved to Es Mercadal for the convenience of village life.

Their two sons, James (27) and Oli (25), have since joined them under Spain’s Digital Nomad Visa.

Peter and Jo are now in the process of renewing their TIE cards to become permanent residents after five years — a task that recently took them to Palma due to a shortage of appointments in Menorca.

From Birmingham to Menorca At a recent Antic Car Club event, John bumped into Peter Jones, well known in Son Parc for his lively performances at BJ’s Bar. We later met him at his home in Es Mercadal to hear the story of how a Birmingham-born musician and tech enthusiast built a life — and a fan base — in Menorca.

Becoming “The Guitar Guy” Now retired, Peter has returned to his first love: music. He’s reinvented himself as The Guitar Guy, performing solo gigs in local venues such as BJ’s Bar in Son Parc, Bar 51 in Arenal, Café Concert Saboy and Bar S’Aljub in Es Mercadal. He is also looking forward to performing at Dylan’s Bar in Ferreries, along with other venues in the coming months.

Peter, who turns 65 next year, grew up in Birmingham, the birthplace of so many legendary rock musicians — an influence that shaped him deeply. He played in college bands, with his first gig at the pub at Aston Villa Football Club, the same venue where Ozzy Osbourne recently played his farewell concert. His mother even worked at the Lucas factory alongside Ozzy’s mum.

Peter performs acoustic and electric guitar covers of classic artists such as Santana, Aerosmith, Dire Straits and Eric Clapton. He now mixes in a few wellknown Spanish hits, earning himself a growing fan base among locals and visitors alike.

Musical Exchanges and the Tech Revolution After a short spell as a photographer, Peter spent 15 years at the influential music shop Musical Exchanges, working with rising stars such as Black Sabbath, Duran Duran, Ocean Colour Scene and UB40. Fascinated by the new world of synthesisers, drum machines and computers, he became the go-to expert for local bands.

By January he had competed around 1200 hours of study, Julio declared him ready for the final exam and booked him in for two days in Madrid for his official government assessment both theoretical and practical.

SPARKY BILLY

Day 1:

FROM DIVING DREAMS TO ELECTRICAL EXPERTISE

After signing a 30-page document (sealed with wax) agreeing to the Royal Decrees — and selecting his bocadillo for lunch — Billy received a surprise: a professional English translation of the exam. “I never asked for it, but they were excited to be examining their first British passport holder and wanted to support me.” He was also given 15 extra minutes per exercise to complete the official answer sheets in Spanish.

In the end, he finished in around 40 minutes, over an hour early and achieved the required 85% pass mark. The written tasks included designing the electrical system for a nine-storey apartment block and specifying the wiring, sockets, breakers, surge protection and car charger for a new house.

Day 2: Working in the training room, candidates had to wire up the circuits they had designed — all under a tight two-hour limit — and then perform eight standard tests for each circuit both dead and live tests. The final task involved faultfinding on a completed board.

After passing, Billy received his Digital Certificate, was registered in Madrid, and then navigated the not-so-simple process of applying for his electrical installer licence in the Balearics, eventually receiving his Digital Installer ID.

Billy and his wife Joanne are certainly not a couple to shy away from a challenge.

Long-time owners of Borneo Dream Travel & Tours Sdn Bhd (borneodream. com), a successful diving and excursion company in Malaysian Borneo, they moved to Menorca in 2016 with the idea of enjoying island life while working remotely.

Then COVID arrived — and the company’s revenue in Malaysia came to a sudden halt. Undeterred, they reinvented themselves. Joanne retrained as an English teacher (englishwith joanne.com), while Billy began crafting decorative metal signs (plasmawizard.eu) and helping with electrical installations around the island.

The Costs The course normally costs €1,800, but Billy snapped it up during a special offer for €697 + IVA. Additional costs included:

Last year, Billy decided to take the electrical work seriously. In January, he became one of the first British passport holders in Menorca to qualify fully as a Spanish Electrical Installer (Electrician).

Deciding to Qualify “I’m an autonomo and wanted to work as a fully accredited electrician,” Billy explains. “Two years ago, I contacted the approved training centre in Alaior, but they insisted their courses were for Spanish nationals only.”

“Anyone considering this needs to be aware that the equipment is a major investment,” Billy advises.

Months later, a Facebook advert from the Ministry of Energy changed everything. Billy contacted one of their training centres near Madrid. “They couldn’t have been more helpful. Within an hour they confirmed it was possible for me to enrol — provided I could prove my experience.”

Getting to Work Billy’s next task was informing his accountant. “Ernesto told me I needed a tax code change because I was now in a professional bracket — and would be ‘watched’,” Billy laughs.

With the help of his friend Sylva, who knows his work and speaks fluent Spanish, Billy completed the online assessments and interviews needed to begin the course.

He could no longer operate as a standard autonomo, but he was permitted to work through their existing company, Menorca Dream CB (menorcadream. com), provided he increased liability insurance by €600,000.

Coursework and the Madrid Exam

Busy Days Ahead

Billy was assigned a mentor — Professor Julio Carmona — who guided him throughout. The course was in Castellano, but Billy could work at his own pace, submitting assignments as he progressed. “If I got stuck, Julio was always there on WhatsApp.”

Work has not been in short supply. Around 40% of Billy’s clients are Englishspeaking, but he also works extensively with German clients, especially around Son Ganxo.

One obstacle came when Billy hit a wall in his studies. Julio advised him to print out all 52 REBT Electrical Standards (ITC-BT) and Royal Decrees and study them carefully. “After that, everything started to click,” Billy says. He even built a test board at home, recording videos of himself performing the required tasks. Work he was doing for several companies including Binivie SL (binivie.com) also provided useful evidence.

He is certified for all types of electrical installations in homes and commercial premises up to 10kW including solar installations. He does not install air-conditioning but can do the necessary wiring for their legal installation. Plus, he loves fault finding Billy’s Tips for Homeowners • Don’t turn off your water heater when away — it uses little electricity and switching it off can cause more problems than it solves. Consider putting it on a timer so it maximises either your cheap rate or solar production.

• Check your fuse boards in both house and pool areas to ensure they meet current standards, including earths and surge protection both permanent and transient (required in new builds, board upgrades and reforms).

• Bathroom safety rules: 230 VAC switches and sockets must be at least 1.2m from taps and shower heads (Volume 3), and correct earth fault and surge protection must be used. Pull-cord switches are not used in Spanish bathrooms. Make sure your new bathroom or kitchen’s electrics are done by a licensed sparky.

A TROTTING FAMILY IN MAHON

On the Sant Lluís–Mahón road, near the Guardia Civil Barracks (and the prison), you will find the Hipòdrom Municipal de Maó.

Here you can watch the island’s traditional trotting races.

SUMMER NIGHTS AT THE TRACK In the summer months the races are held in the cooler evening temperatures, from about 9pm. In August we were part of a crowd of over a thousand — an amazing atmosphere.

A single jockey sits in a two-wheeled rig pulled by a horse that must trot; galloping leads to disqualification. Races normally begin with an “auto start”: a white Range Rover with two gates accelerates away in front of the assembled horses and the race is on. There may be two or three laps, and the pace is fast and thrilling to watch.

Between races, the track is watered and levelled while the next competitors warm up. This gives race-goers time to choose which horse to back. A €1.50 flutter can — if luck is on your side — win you what my dad used to call “folding money”!

WINTER SUNDAY MORNINGS Now we’re in the winter season, racing is held on Sunday mornings from 11:10am. It’s much quieter, and we consider ourselves to have done well if we clear more than €3 from a win.

There is, however, an accumulator — the Trio. At the midNovember meeting, the pot stood at over €1,000. To win, you must predict first, second and third. This Sunday the winning combination was 4-6-9 — our friend had 4-6-8!

A FAMILY PASSION FOR TROTTING It was this same friend who introduced us to trotting many years ago. We were hooked from the first visit, and especially proud to support his son, Iñaki, a regular competitor in his red-andwhite strip.

A few years ago, four of us were very lucky when Iñaki borrowed a double rig and took us for a turn around the track. It was tremendous fun — though getting on and off was the hardest part! We felt very privileged to see the track from the inside.

FOOD AND ATMOSPHERE The restaurant at the Hipòdrom is lively — every day except Monday — and especially busy for Sunday lunch. A set menu is available for under €20, and their takeaway paellas are extremely popular; we counted at least 30 being collected (each wrapped in silver foil) this Sunday.

WHY YOU SHOULD GO If you’ve never been to watch the races, it’s a fantastic way to spend an hour or two on a sunny Sunday morning — perhaps with a beer or a coffee. The races are exciting, and it’s a brilliant place for people-watching.

As a youngster, Iñaki accompanied the local vet (a family friend) to the Hipòdrom on Sunday mornings. One week, during a visit to the track in Ciutadella, he placed a 100-peseta bet predicting the first five places — and won! The prize of over €3,000 was enough to start him on his career with horses: owning, breeding, training and competing. Over more than 20 years, he has probably had more than 50 horses.

But if you want Sunday lunch, you will definitely need to book.

His favourite, he says, is Goliath de Clyde, now 9 years old and still active at the track in Manacor, Mallorca. This has probably been his most successful horse, and he raced with him many times in Palma where the prize pots are bigger.

Iñaki currently has seven horses, and it’s a hobby that demands real commitment.

Caring for them involves feeding and training morning, noon and night.

Fortunately, his partner Loida shares his passion for horses and also enjoys racing — even occasionally against him!

THE NEXT GENERATION: MINI TROT From the age of six, their son Kilian has taken part in the mini trot races, which open the programme at the Hipòdrom. His pony is called Ding Dong Cherry.

The Sunday we watched, he came second, though we have seen him win too.

He helps his dad and trains once or twice a week. When we asked what he enjoyed most, he said he loves the horses, the racing, and making new friends.

ON COURSE FOR RECOVERY: VETERANS RETURN TO MENORCA A group of veterans from the On Course Foundation spent a restorative week in Menorca in November, hosted once again at Son Parc Golf Club. The programme, organised by Adrian Deamer together with Steve and Polly Morgan and Jan Henman of Rest and Recover Menorca, offered daily coaching, camaraderie, and a chance for participants to recover their confidence.

Each morning began with a lesson from PGA professional Dai Llewellyn, followed by a round of golf in the afternoon. The group had a free day when they went to Mahón via Monte Toro, and local resident Steve Long gave them a brief talk on the military history of the Island. The November weather was so good that some relaxed on the beach while others chose to play more golf.

A WELCOME RETURN Rest and Recover brought veterans from the armed services to Menorca seven times before COVID halted the initiative. They received generous help from the local community, who generously offered accommodation in local villas. This year marked its long-awaited return, with the group staying at Whitesands in Arenal Castell.

Adrian has seen first-hand how beneficial the week can be. One participant’s wife wrote after a previous visit: “Thank you for getting my old husband back.”

For many, the combination of golf, sunshine and shared experience is genuinely life-changing.

The charity still had funds remaining from before the pandemic and is able to contribute €3,000 per year for the next five years to ensure the visits continue.

Founded in 2010 at the height of the Afghanistan and Iraq conflicts, the On Course Foundation helps wounded, injured and sick Service personnel rebuild confidence and transition into civilian life. The charity runs confidence-building golf days across the UK and opens up employment pathways within the golf industry. One such example is the Caddy School for Soldiers at Royal County Down.

The organisation was started by golfer John Simpson, who had worn a leg splint all his life due to polio. Asked to run a three-day golf camp to show what was still possible, he agreed, and from that small beginning the charity developed into the national organisation it is today. Of its two overseas trips, one is to Florida and the other—to the delight of many—remains Menorca.

COACHING AND COMMUNITY Dai Llewellyn has accompanied the group several times and always looks forward to the week.

“Golf is a great leveller,” he says. “Because of the handicap system, everyone can compete—whether it’s with each other or against Rory McIlroy! Son Parc look after us so well—better than any other golf course we visit —and that’s all down to Paola and her team. Without the support of Paola, Rest and Recover and also Doncars, the trip simply wouldn’t be possible.”

He adds that a full week together allows the veterans to make steady, noticeable progress.

SHARED EXPERIENCES The veterans come from different generations and backgrounds—some served in Northern Ireland in the 1970s, others in Afghanistan, and some are still serving. This group met up at Gatwick before flying together to Menorca. Only one had been to the island before; by the end of the week most said they did not want to leave.

ONE PARTICIPANT SUMMED UP THE WEEK: “Thank you to everyone for making this such a memorable experience. I now consider you all friends. I hope we can stay in touch and meet again to play golf. It was the best week of fun and golf I’ve ever had.”

ADRIAN’S INVOLVEMENT Adrian served for 24 years in the Army Catering Corps/Royal Logistics Corps before retiring in 2001.

He moved to Menorca in 2017 to work as a private chef and has since become closely involved in veterans’ charities. Last year he organised a 24-hour padel match in Son Parc, raising €6,000 for Combat to Coffee, another organisation supporting veterans which he first saw on the One Show.

way to his eternal homeland in heaven. This sense of pilgrimage motivated his decision to lead a mission to the land of the Frisians, who were the ancestors of the modern Dutch and Belgians. So apparently the idea of being a migrant 1300 years ago was grounded in spiritual beliefs and the idea that life is a pilgrimage, travelling and migrating from mortality towards immortality.

Twelve years ago, Kate and I enjoyed our first winter in Menorca. That is to say we enjoyed the months from November until March, which bore little relation meteorologically to the season of winter in Canada, where we were before.

Anyway, as anyone knows who has spent the ‘quiet’ season in Menorca, it can be very tranquil and peaceful. So much so that even though we had been in Menorca less than a year, when things started to open again in April, we both had a sort of instinctively indignant reaction: ‘Who are all these people invading our quiet island?!’ Apart from being a disturbing display of possessiveness, I suppose that it was a measure of just how easily we came to feel at home here, and just how appealing this island can be - especially if one enjoys the tranquility and simplicity of the ‘quiet’ season.

The spiritual beliefs relating to migration can be seen to be rooted in biblical texts. Two pivotal events in the Hebrew Scriptures (Old Testament) are the Exodus from Egypt and the enforced exile of the people of Israel in Babylon, but there are many other depictions of migrants, refugees and asylum seekers.

The New Testament perpetuates this idea of divinely sanctioned migration and discipleship as pilgrimage. The birth of Jesus is set in a place that was not his family home, and shortly afterwards he and his parents flee to Egypt as refugees. So, if the biblical record is anything to go by, God is rather favourably disposed towards migrants and refugees, who share the common characteristic of being outsiders, searching for identity and a sense of belonging.

In Homer’s Odyssey, one of the places encountered by Odysseus and his companions as they return from the Trojan war is the land of the Lotus Eaters, a place that made people forget their responsibilities and live in a sort of narcotically induced, stupefied state. I’ve wondered whether Menorca might be an equivalent, apart from the narcotics, of course. How many people have come to the island for a holiday, or a brief stay, or a couple of years of ministry, and found themselves staying far longer than their original intent?

However, Menorca is a little different from Homer’s land of the Lotus Eaters, in that while this island is alluring and keeps us here, it does not stupefy us.

Quite the opposite: it heightens our awareness of the natural world and reminds us how fragile this earth is - and that maintaining its beauty depends upon our efforts to preserve its qualities while allowing for responsible, carefully measured and managed progress. To spend a winter here is to be reminded how important it is to have fallow time. But to spend a winter in Menorca implies (generally) that either one is a native of Menorca, or one of the rest of us who have found ourselves imbedded in this funny little crossroads that seems to attract people disproportionately to its physical size - in other words, a wanderer. Or perhaps a pilgrim?

I was pondering this while researching material for a sermon on Willibrord, an eighth century Yorkshireman, and I discovered an interesting thing. He entered a monastery, and then after he became a monk, chose to pursue his vocation in Ireland. Why? Because like many other monks of the time, he believed that exile from his native country on earth would make him a better pilgrim on the

ROQUETA WINTER 2025 This brings up is an important aspect of migration, or life as a pilgrimage from mortality to immortality that should not be overlooked. Moving away, or moving on, means leaving something behind. Like the Yorkshireman, Willibrord, who went into the church more than 1300 years ago and became a migrant for his faith, there is a complex interplay between identity formed by what has been left behind, and that is then shaped by a new environment.

Perhaps one of the more dramatic (or melodramatic) expressions of letting go in order to move on is in David Byrne’s song, Burning Down The House. It’s about destroying something that offers safety, but has us trapped, and in many ways can be seen as a metaphor for those aspects of life that we need to let go in order to be free to move on.

Dr Guli Francis-Dehqani, the Bishop of Chelmsford, is the first woman from a minority ethnic background to be ordained as an Anglican bishop in the UK. Having arrived in the UK as a refugee from Iran in 1980, she is familiar with the experience of having identity reshaped by a new culture. In a new book, Listening to the Music of the Soul, she writes, ‘There is no escaping the fact that sometimes you have to lose your identity to find it. This is true not only for those who suffer displacement as refugees and asylum seekers, but also for those who experience serious illness, divorce, grief, abuse .. in fact profound loss or injustice of any kind … At times like these, we can either remain stuck or we can begin the climb to a new sense of self, which may be slow and painful, but also possibly transformative.’ There are many fictional illustrations of this process, including the character of Jean Valjean in Victor Hugo’s Les Miserables.

It is this possibility of transformation that underpins the intentional migration of the mediaeval monks such as Willibrord, seeking to refine their identity by allowing new settings to reshape it. Whether consciously or subconsciously, it underpins the wandering that brings many people to Menorca. Like many who have spent extended time in Menorca, I know that I am not the same person as the one who passed the first of thirteen winters (so far!) here. And I believe that it is the tranquility of these quiet seasons that has allowed me to embrace a saying that originated in the autobiography of the golfer, Walter Hagen: ‘You’re only here for a short visit. Don’t hurry. Don’t worry. And be sure to smell the flowers along the way,’ or at least the fennel, rosemary and chamomile. There is certainly plenty of hustle and bustle in the world around us as autumn gives way to winter and we await the arrival of spring. But there can be peace, too.

I believe that for all of us, life is a process of growth by embracing the notion that we are all offered the opportunity of journeying as pilgrims. That by letting go of what holds us back, we can allow our identity to be shaped and formed by the changes along the way. That by immersing ourselves in seasons or places of tranquility we can find calm and inner peace. And that we can let our journeys be a gift of contentment to ourselves and others.

CANCER SUPPORT MALLORCA EXTENDING SUPPORT TO MENORCA A WONDERFUL CLOSE TO THE 2025 SEASON Autumn is upon us, and our 2025 season has now drawn to a close. This year’s Arts Society Menorca lectures have been exceptionally engaging, thanks to the outstanding work of our Chairman and Programme Secretary, Victoria Dowie.

She has devoted countless hours to reviewing audition tapes from highly qualified Arts Society lecturers, seeking just the right speakers for Menorca.

Her dedication shows — every lecture this year has been both informative and thoroughly enjoyable. Thank you, Victoria!

LADIES LUNCHEON CLUB

BY CHRISTINE BROOKER Hello! We had our October lunch at the Hotel Agamenon (soon to be Hotel Indigo Menorca) and whether we will return will depend on the new management.

We had our annual coach trip to Ciutadella with plenty of time for the shopaholics to browse the little boutiques. It was a lovely sunny day, our group had lunch at Molí de Comte, the old windmill where we ate and drank very well. The November meeting was “chatty”lunch at Avelino 23, They provided an excellent meal and we had our own room. Avril announced that money we had collected in the “pig”will go to Annie Gooch for the “Christmas boxes” she organises for the Red Cross. Our ‘Christmas’ lunch will be at Bar Pons in Cala en Porter with music and fun. The January one, is always on the second Wednesday, and we welcome suggestions for venues, with parking and a private room if possible. Our AGM will be in the New Year, if anyone wants to join the committee, please let us know.

As the hustle and bustle of the Island quietened down, October Probus members relished a delightful afternoon at Dos Pablo’s Bistro in Cala en Porter. The warm welcome and mouthwatering choices, including the famous Ale and Beef Pie, left us all in culinary bliss. It was a feast to remember.

The impeccable service of the two Pauls and the attentive staff made our dining experience even more enjoyable. Our guest speaker, Siobhan from Luna Fit, inspired us with valuable insights on staying young and fit.

In November we went to Thai Menorca in Binisafua.

We were served the most delicious lunch with three different starters and main courses to choose from.

Ana, a Thai masseuse from the salon in Mahón, gave a shoulder and head massage to Shelley.

Ana told us that shoulder pain often originates in the head and stress can come from grinding one’s teeth. Ana’s assistant Werner told us that in Thailand he often has a massage every day and that it is ridiculoue that people are happy to spend money on their cars but not their bodies. Ana explained that it is better to have treatment once or twice a week to start and then less when your condition improves.

Also it takes a few days before you feel the benefits.

My Christmas thought is “Sending Christmas cards is a good way to let your friends and family know that you think they’re worth the price of a stamp.”

CATS IN NEED

Many of our cats arrive with serious health issues or limited life expectancy.

Margarita, who died last year, was expected to live only three to six months. She stayed with us for nearly three years. This year brought sadness as we lost three old boys in quick succession — brothers Codger and Dodger from Binibeca, and gentle Shadow from Alcaufar. Shadow had multiple health problems when he arrived, including liver disease and lung shadows, yet his mission in life was simple: to be cuddled. Like many older cats, he also suffered from dementia. All three eventually succumbed to the dreaded kidney failure and are deeply missed.

A New Challenge At this time of year, we step up our efforts to catch, spay, and neuter stray cats.

That’s why it was so devastating to learn that the island’s official neutering programme, due to run until March 2026, has been abruptly halted.

We don’t yet know if it will resume. Without it, the hard work and investment of countless volunteers could be undone, and the progress we’ve made in reducing kitten births lost. Many of our colonies haven’t seen kittens for years — unless they’ve been dumped by cruel individuals.

How You Can Help Supporting our work is now more vital than ever. We provide food daily for around 150 cats, with volunteers making nightly rounds to towns and weekly visits to private homes with food hoppers. Vet bills and food costs are rising fast.

Christmas at the Cat Café

For 26 years, we’ve been helping stray and feral cats across Menorca — work that can be heartbreaking at times, but also deeply rewarding.

Despite the challenges, it’s Christmas in the Café Shop! We have our own calendars, Alex Clarke designs, and a range of festive cards — many featuring Across the Miles from Menorca or Greetings from Menorca. Cards are €3 each or €3.25 for five, and yes — they’re suitable for posting!

A Safe Haven for the Elderly and Injured While neutering remains the cornerstone of what we do, many elderly or injured cats find their way into my home. Some settle within hours; others take days, cautiously exploring their new surroundings. There are plenty of nooks and crannies for them to feel safe — under beds, in the shed, or perched on a shelf.

We’ve created a large enclosed garden and outdoor area where they can roam in safety.

You’ll also find plenty of charming gifts: textiles, mugs, compact mirrors, keepsake boxes, and pens featuring cats, dogs, or horses — perfect for Secret Santa or stocking fillers.

We’re open Fridays and Sundays, 11:00–13:00, at Sinia den Riera 16, Es Castell, and daily in December. You can also find some of our stock at Defensa Animales Shop, Son Vilar.

When winter comes, the heart of our home is the sitting room, with the wood burner glowing and cosy beds arranged around it. Sometimes there’s hardly any space left for me on the sofa! Yet they all live in harmony. As my vet once told me, “They’ve nothing to fight over — they’re neutered, they have space, and as much food as they want.”

The Oldies by the Fire I love seeing the oldies by the fire — the ones we fondly called The Ancients — who would claim pride of place on the table in front of the wood burner.

Perhaps I sound like a Crazy Cat Lady? A visitor to the Cat Café once said after spending a morning observing us, “You’re not at all what we expected — you’re quite normal.” I took that as a compliment!

TREBALUGER EQUINE RESCUE CENTRE

BAMBU CHARITY EVENING On Sunday 19th October, Bambu celebrated its final evening of the season and very generously donated 50% of the night’s takings to the rescue centre.

A huge thank you to all the staff at Bambu – Ben and Jules, Giacomo and Niki – and to everyone who supported us on the night, as well as the many wonderful local companies who donated raffle prizes. It was a fantastic evening, and an incredible total of €5,820 was raised. This will help us enormously during the winter months.

THE JANE GOODALL INSTITUTE We are now officially part of this amazing organisation. Jane Goodall was a beautiful lady who dedicated her life to animal welfare, and we are honoured to be welcomed into her legacy. We hope to make her proud by continuing to educate and help in our own small way. We pay tribute to her extraordinary work. RIP. This achievement would not have been possible without the guidance and support of the wonderful team at The Flicker Foundation in the UK, who have been helping guide us to develop and work towards long-term sustainability. As many of you know, daily challenges with funds and volunteers are always at the forefront.

LIFE AT THE CENTRE The animals are enjoying the cooler days – there’s more running and playing, usually instigated by our cheeky mule, Aries! It’s a joy to watch them having fun and feeling happy.

Sadly, more and more animals are being offered to us: some with health issues, many simply no longer wanted. Unfortunately, we cannot take in any more at the moment. It is heartbreaking to say no. Many owners do not want to take responsibility for their animals, and even when we offer help and ask only for a contribution towards legally required costs such as chipping and passports, they refuse – often surprised that we even ask. I bite my tongue often… and if you know me, you’ll know that’s not easy! There is so much to be done for such a small island.

MAUX23 Paola, the owner of this beautiful shop in Es Migjorn, donates 100% of her profits to local animal charities, including ours. Once again, we have received funds from her hard work this season. She is a true champion of animal welfare and animal rights in Menorca. Please visit her shop – you’ll find beautiful items and plenty of inspiration for Christmas gifts.

WINTER HELP NEEDED We have many ideas to help sustain the centre in the future. If anyone can spare time this winter, we would be incredibly grateful. NUTRITION AND FITNESS A F ES TI V E W E LLB E I N G G U I D E BY TOM & J ES S DYE R The difference wasn’t willpower. It wasn’t deprivation. It wasn’t being “the boring healthy one” at parties.

“EAT, DRINK AND STILL BUTTON YOUR JEANS IN JANUARY!”

The difference was a simple plan - a thread of healthy habits woven through the whole month.

This year, I’d love to share some of the key parts of the plan with you.

Not a diet. Not a guilt trip. Just a Christmas season that feels great while you’re in it… and great afterwards too.

And because this is a collaboration between myself (movement & mindset) and my wife Jess (Nutritional Therapist & yoga teacher), you’re getting the best of both worlds.

HOW TO NAVIGATE FOOD, STRESS & SOCIAL EVENTS WITHOUT DYSREGULATING YOUR HEALTH You can eat, drink and be merry. Just follow these 7 core principles: • EAT with awareness • DRINK with intention • MOVE daily • SLEEP as much as possible • DE-COMPRESS before needed • HAVE FUN - genuinely • RESET at any point None of these require willpower - only attention.

Let’s break it down…

1 THE NUTRITION THREAD - JESS’S GUIDANCE Before we head into the nutrition tips, it’s worth casting your eyes over the set of symptoms below which are associated with inflammation at a cellular level. Inflammation is considered one of the major root causes of many modern health problems so adding more inflammatory food and lifestyle habits will only further engrain the imbalance and leave you feeling even more ‘> insert your undesired symptom’.

• Fatigue • Brain fog and poor focus • Joint paint • Muscle cramps • Muscle soreness • Stiffness • Anxiety • Depression • Hot flashes • Frequent infections • Feeling puffy • Food sensitivities or intolerance • Acid reflux • Hair loss • Brittle nails • Itchy nails • Swelling • Mood swings • Poor sleep • Bloating • Weight gain • Constipation or diarrhoea • Skin rashes or irritation Acne • Congestion • Headaches or migraines • Painful cycles Food can either fuel your cells with vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients which reduces cellular oxidative stress and creates optimal cellular function, or if the food you eat is devoid of nutrients then it can fuel dysfunction and promote oxidative stress and metabolic dysfunction. Our food choices are so powerful, and the compound effect of our choices will be felt in January if we’re not proactively making conscious decisions when it comes to our nutrition in December.

Christmas in Menorca is magical. The festive lights in the old towns, the gatherings with island friends now everyone is out of summer-mode, the opportunity to enjoy beach walks under the crisp blue skies, the long lunches that turn into dinners… It’s a time to celebrate, reconnect and enjoy the warmth of our community - even as temperatures drop.

But let’s be honest: December can also be the month that derails our health so the goal of this article is to help you feel more confident in your ability to navigate the holidays so you don’t arrive into January feeling heavier, sluggish and disappointed about not looking after yourself. After years as a personal trainer and health coach in the City of London - one of the most festive (and indulgent) places in Europe - I saw the same pattern repeatedly:

Tip #1: Eat Protein First PROTEIN: • stabilises blood sugar • keeps cravings down • supports muscle (and metabolism) When faced with a menu or a table full of different food options: • Prioritise the protein first, THEN enjoy the rest

DECEMBER: “OH WELL, IT’S CHRISTMAS!” JANUARY: “EUGH, I WISH I HADN’T…”

Goal: 20–30g protein each meal. Good quality sources include: chicken, tuna, eggs, Greek yoghurt, prawns, wild salmon seeds, lentils, chickpeas, (e.g. chicken breast, tuna, 3 eggs, Greek yoghurt, lentils, tofu)

But then there were the others - my clients who still enjoyed the parties, still had the mince pies, still raised a glass (or two!)… yet stepped on the scales on the 1st January the same weight or even lighter than they were on the 1st December.

Snacks might look like: Berries and hard-boiled eggs • Apple and nut butter • Avocado and edamame beans • Celery and sliced cooked chicken • Kiwi and turkey slices • Pumpkin seeds and berries 57

ROQUETA WINTER 2025 For example, I’d rather have one really nice glass of wine or one evening where I have a couple of drinks rather than mindlessly saying yes to any old drinking opportunity, and I’d rather be disciplined with my exercise classes throughout the holidays because I know I’m going to immediately feel more energised and happier for training, and more considered and conscious food choices happen from this place.

I’d rather sit and enjoy a glass of Baileys on ice with my in-laws by the fire, the only time of the year I ever drink Baileys, and not have a dessert that I’m not overly fussed about.

I don’t see this approach as restrictive but rather savouring the best bits.

Tip #5: The 80/20 Mindset This ratio is an approach to keeping healthy enjoyably, without feeling like there’s any sense of restriction.

80% of the time: you eat food and drink drinks that you know make you feel your best.

Real food, colourful plates, good hydration.

20% of the time: Christmas magic - You go with the flow and allow for a more open mindset when it comes to your nutrition.

If 80% of the meals you’re eating and the drinks you’re drinking over the course of the week are healthy, your body will be able to handle the other 20% so much better.

The “protein first” method will keep your blood sugar levels regulated and reduce inflammation which will create better hormone health and a stable appetite and mood so you can be more in the moment, feeling calm, regulated and available to have a great time.

Movement is the bridge back to balance.

Tip #6: Walk Like You Mean It

Tip #2: Create a Longer Fasting Window on Non-Party Days

Every day - no exceptions - get 20+ minutes of walking into your day:

On the quieter days - those without social events - create a longer ‘fasting window’ for yourself which basically means a longer stretch of time where you intentionally don’t eat so that your digestive system enjoys a break from the constant eating. This can be done by:

• Walk the dog • Explore the town lights • Enjoy a beach or coastal walk • Take the family on a post lunch stroll

• Delaying breakfast or skipping breakfast altogether so that you break your fast later in the morning

Exercise and movement overall will help you to manage your postprandial blood sugar levels which are your blood sugar levels after eating a meal. Your hormones and blood sugar will be more regulated for having kept mobile.

• Switch your regular 3 meals plus snacks for 2 satisfying meals e.g. brunch and dinner or breakfast and lunch

Tip #7: Try Exercise Snacking

A fasting window of 12-16 hours is a great starting point, so if your last meal is at 7pm, you would wait anywhere between 9am-1pm the following day to enjoy your next meal, water and herbal teas can be enjoyed throughout, Being more mindful on the quieter days will create a caloric buffer across the week and allow you to enjoy food socially without feeling like you’re constantly eating.

On busy days, instead of doing nothing exercise-wise, do something tiny (a snack): • 10 squats (they don’t have to be full range • 10 press-ups against a wall (or the floor) • 1–2 slow and deep breaths • A gentle stretch by the tree (opening the body and connecting to nature)

Tip #3: Drink Smart Festive alcohol strategy:

Consistency and progression always beat perfection.

If drinking alcohol - Drink water in between each alcoholic drink.

It’s the habit that matters, not the heroics.

The City Council invites everyon to dress up in costumes of robots, cyborgs, spaceships, extraterrestrials and everything related to outer space.

SPORTS EVENTS Saturday, 14 March 2026 – Marathon Trail del Nord The Trail del Nord returns with a new adventure with plenty of elevation gain for the most prepared runners, climbing Santa Àgueda, and finishing in Ferreries.

The 30km route, with over 700 m of elevation gain, will begin on the Camí de Binimetl·là towards the beach. From there, following the Camí de Cavalls, participants will cross the “Mordor” (a local landmark) and reach Ets Alocs. They will then head towards Cala Pilar, where they will take the path to the parking area.

From there, they will use the Camí Reial del Nord to climb to Santa Àgueda Castle, one of the most important vestiges of the Arab presence in Menorca during the 14th century. Afterward, they will follow different paths to finish in Ferreries.

The 14-km Popular Trail will also visit Santa Àgueda, starting from the Camí Reial del Nord, before finishing in Ferreries.

For the first time, Vue de la salle du théâtre de Minorque and Vue de la scène du théâtre de Minorque, two oil paintings from 1760 that depict views inspired by an 18th-century theatre in Maó, will be exhibited.

ORFEO MAONES ARTS AL NORD 2025 The Teatre de Fornells became the stage for seven shows for all audiences between November 8 and December 13, as part of the Arts al Nord program.

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 6, 5 PM PLASTIIIK (THEATRE CIA. MELICOTÓ TITELLES) It’s a puppet show that tells stories from the bottom of the sea, starting with the sinking of a plastic bottle. This event will generate various situations featuring fish, jellyfish, a very funny crab, and a wise whale. Finally, together they will manage to pull the bottle out of the water and return it to the human world.

PIG TALES THE PIG’S CHRISTMAS SPEECH

In front of the telly, having stolen the dog’s bed on a cold winter evening, in her blanket that I still hold to this day.

“I find myself today completely and most happily at home. My own family often gathers round to watch the television.

I very much hope that this new medium will make my message more personal and direct”.

“My human and I recall our life together with the greatest pleasure. pleasure We were received warmly wherever we went. All these adventures and much more have left a happy and enduring impression”.

Throughout my life with Dot, I marveled time and time again at how much joy she brought to people. Even if they ate bacon sandwiches. Cars would go past us and stop suddenly. I’d see the driver eyeing the rear-view mirror in disbelief. Then they’d reverse tentatively back down the road, and draw alongside with children bulging out of the window to take her photo. We’d invariably be mobbed on walks by outstretched hands wanting to touch her.

In our estranged, lonely world of today, we yearn to connect with animals and nature.

More often than not we get a cat or a dog. But why not show empathy to a pig? Or any other animal? Dot showed us all that her needs for understanding, warmth, contact, and community are the same as ours. We aren’t so very different at all.

So here are some of my favourite Dot shots, narrated by our late RH Queen Elizabeth II herself.

“It is inevitable that I should seem rather a remote figure to many of you, after all, my standard of living has a spiritual as well as a material aspect”.

“Every year, I look forward to opening the letters, parcels, and telegrams that come to me from all parts of the world. Xmas is a festival of peace. It is still a home of peace — even if I do my best to make it rather more lively. It is my will that we should establish peace on earth, goodwill towards all animals. All the artificial barriers that divide men from pigs can be broken down. The real value and pleasure of celebration is that we share in it together. God bless you all”.

Looking back, I think what delighted people the most was to discover that Dot had a character, a temper, moods. She was a sentient being just like us. They say Christmas is all about sharing joy. And I’m so glad my pig still has the power to do that.

“Also, during 1957, my human and I paid visits to Son Saura, Es Pinaret, La Vall, and the beaches of Cala Blanca and Santandria. In each case the arrangements and formalities were arranged with great skill”.
