As we celebrate Term 2, I would like to thank students, staff and families for the incredible effort made by everyone in what was one of the most challenging 10 weeks in the school’s history. We had to move the 60 Anniversary festival (originally on 21 March and then 12 May) to a new date (5 August) as we managed the impact of COVID, constant rain and the cancellation of so many events that usually take place in Term 2.

Despite that (as you will read in later sections) we have continued to have great success – academically, in sport, debating, elective excursions, with partners such as Origin Foundation, and in completing NAPLAN, HSC minimum standards, assessment tasks and the HSC trial examinations.

Student reports for Year 12 were presented this Term 2 and the Year 7-10 reports will be issued on Thursday 21 July. A summary of the Year 12 Presentation address can be found on page 8. Despite some delays we published the Annual Report in Term 2. It is available on our website.

Sadly, at the end of Term 2 we said farewell to Mr Tim Wrigley (who has moved to another school), Ms Joanne Rutkowski (who has taken a job outside schools but still in education) and Ms Hussein who has taken a break from education to work in industry. In Term 3 we are welcoming new permanent staff – Ms Purnima Nand (Science), Dr David Proctor (Librarian) and Ms Ashleigh Stepfner (Learning Support).

Thanks to everyone for the efforts in Term 2 – to students for working around the many absences using blended learning approaches (online and face-to-face), to families for your support and understanding, and to staff whose capacity and commitment to ensure learning continuity for all students was both exemplary and exhausting. The chance to celebrate together with the community on 5 August and again at the Alumni Dinner on 2 September will provide opportunities for us to connect and thank all those who make this such a wonderful school.

Secured Internet Edge Rooty Hill High School completed installation of DoE Secured Internet Edge at the beginning of Term 2. This new ICT service significantly increased the school’s internet capacity and improved the protection against potential cyber threats. The school’s network is currently delivering lightning-fast speed at 1Mbps per user any time of the day.

Brand New Shade Structure (COLA) The table below contains some interesting facts of our new COLA. It covers two thirds of the school’s basketball/volleyball courts, providing protection to students and staff from UV and inclement weather when learning, exercising and socialising outdoors.

2021-2022 Tech-4-Learning Equipment Rollout

In Term 2, the school used the 2021-2022 T4L allocation to install eight 24-inch M1 iMac computers in the Art Learning Space classroom (A001). Each iMac comes with the full Adobe Creative Cloud suite, giving students access to the collection of software used for graphics design, video editing, web development and professional photography.

RHHS students now have opportunities to further develop their creativity with cutting-edge industry standard technology. It is awesome to be creative!

Congratulations to 2 of our Beginning Teachers who achieved their accreditation at the Proficient Level of the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers which is a mandatory requirement for all teachers in NSW. Professional development continued for 7 Beginning Teachers with a focus on building a repertoire of classroom practice strategies and adaptability as well as teacher accreditation and mapping the evidence of their practice against the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (APST) at the proficient level.

All teaching, administrative and support staff participated in the Term 2 School Development Day Professional Learning event (6hrs and 40mins) on Assessment in Practice and Best Practice Marking to evaluate faculty and teacher assessment practice to improve student performance.

All teaching and support staff also participated in the Professional Learning Twilight (2hrs 30mins) Session with a focus on classroom observation and student feedback.

6 staff members engaged in one-on-one coaching on Restorative Practices followed by 40 staff members who undertook 2 hours of bespoke professional learning. This professional learning was on Restorative Practice, is a relational platform that will be used by the school in its teaching, learning and wellbeing practices.

The Executive Team and PLLT Leaders undertook 4 sessions of professional learning focused around Dan Haeslers book, The Act of Leadership. This professional learning activity will continue in Term 3 and Term 4.

Professional Learning and Leadership Teams (PLLTs) met to evaluate progress on their 2022 School Plan initiatives and activities. The evaluation included evidence of progress and achievement and recommendations for semester 2 of 2022.

YEAR 7 Year Adviser Message It has been an excellent start to the year for Year 7. The cohort have started their journey at Rooty Hill High School embracing the PERSIST values and participating in all aspects of school life.

Athletics Carnival During Week 3 of Term 2 RHHS students took to the track at Charlie Bali reserve to show their athletic abilities. On the day there was a terrific contribution from Year 7 students with all 2

events filling multiple heats. Persistence, teamwork and success were displayed!

YMCA Camp Year 7 were invited to go and explore the bush at the YMCA camp. Working in teams students persisted through the wet weather to navigate through the bush to find hidden treasures. They sought shelter and learned how to cook bush camp damper from scratch over an open fire.

Personalised Learning Conversations In Week 8, Year 7 took part in their first personalised learning conversations. This was an opportunity for the students to reflect on their strengths, challenges and achievements throughout Semester 1 of Year 7. Students worked with staff to create 3 goals. 1. Successfully transition to Year 8, 2. an extracurricular goal to connect students to the community and 3. a personal goal that they would like to work on in their own life.

We look forward to seeing the growth that comes from these goals. Well done Year 7!

LOTE Written by Danniella Annetts - 7D I liked the Chinese games lesson. I enjoyed where we got to research the different traditional Chinese games and get to experience some of them. I was impressed by how the game was not competitive and it was easy and fun to play. My best experience was when I got motivated by peers and teachers to improve my skills.

Artists Throughout Term 2 multiple talented Year 7 artists worked on a variety of musical and visual art pieces. The CAPA team were very impressed with the progress and creativity that Year 7 students have produced.

YEAR 8 Year Adviser Message

Sport Netball, Touch, Volleyball, rugby league! Year 7 have been involved in it all! There were great victories but even greater displays of teamwork.

Term 2 has been one of the busiest terms for Year 8, with several opportunities for the whole year group to be involved in. With more and more COVID restrictions being eased students participated in athletics, cross country, rugby league, Oz tag, touch football and netball gala days along with 3 whole year group programs – Strengths in Numbers, Career Explorers Day and Personalised Learning Conferences. During their involvement, students displayed a positive attitude, willingness to try new things and courage to step outside their comfort zone. Term 3 will be another busy term with loads of opportunities for the year group. All students are encouraged to take an active role in their dayto-day school life.

Strength in Numbers On 25 May, all Year 8 students took part in the Strength in Numbers Program.

Barangaroo Visit On Tuesday 3 May, Year 8 students had the opportunity to visit the Origin offices in Barangaroo to work with Origin volunteers and RHHS staff to plan and write workshops for the Career Explorers Day. Students were able to offer feedback and suggestions on what works best when working with Year 8 students.

All students enjoyed the opportunity to come together, work in teams, be creative and try new experiences. Following student feedback, we look forward to the second Strength in Numbers Day during Term 3.

Elective Assembly Origin Career Explorers Day On June 7, all Year 8 students participated in the Origin Career Explorers Day. This is the fourth time the program has run in the school and the 2022 group was one of the best.

We had 15 volunteers from Origin Energy and Origin Foundation, some flying in from Brisbane and Melbourne to be a part of the day, to work with Year 8 in 4 different workshops of their choice.

Students spent the day exploring the transferable skills needed to be successful in a career, learning about the pathways of the Origin employees and spent lots of time completing hands on activities that helped them explore future pathways. Students had the opportunity to build water filters (that will be sent overseas to countries where clean drinking water is not available), build structures and have their durability tested on a purpose built “shake table”, code robots to race, design and sell futuristic cars, along with tasks to practice their leadership, collaboration, resilience and future career skills.

On June 10, all Year 8 students learnt about the elective choices for Years 9 and 10. Students selected their top 2 choices to study over the next 2 years. The elective assembly was held after the Career Explorers Day, students were encouraged to selected subjects that align with their interests, passions and strengths. During Term 4 students will find out which 2 subjects they will study in 2023 and 2024.

SALSA During the term in PDHPE classes, Year 8 students were involved in the Students As Life Style Activists (SALSA) Program. Year 8 were taught by trained Year 10 students on how to lead an active, healthy lifestyle. Activities included games on frisbee, exploring local exercise options and healthy eating options for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks.

Personalised Learning Conference Week During Week 8, all Year 8 students had the opportunity to complete their Personalised Learning Conversation.

Students were able to update their personalised learning plan with a new transition, extracurricular and personal goals for Semester 2, discuss their Semester 1 progress through viewing grades and GPA and construct their own vision board. Parents can discuss student’s personalised learning plan via My Learning Hub on student devices. Students personalised vision boards will be available in their report package beginning of Term 3.

Personalised Learning Conversations

The Team Name: The Solutioners committed to further developing their confidence and critical thinking skills in Term 2. The Solutioners included students from Years 8; Mali Coombes, Amy Gower, Ella Munday, Ava Partridge, Mackenzie Reeves. The team have completed their first Game Changer Challenge, which required them to use their critical design thinking skills to create a product-based solution to answer this year's Wicked Problem; “We have a global challenge of ensuring healthy lives for all, at all ages”. The team conducted research and came up with the idea of providing free mandatory check-ups for all people of all ages, as well as providing affordable health care for all. Please enjoy the following passage from their written task to find out more about their solution.

“We have a global challenge of ensuring healthy lives for all, at all ages. Humans need care that is not only accessible to everyone, but affordable too. So many people across the world aren’t receiving health care due to financial issues.

Health care is too expensive for the ordinary person. We have conducted some research and concluded that free mandatory check-ups are essential in our local communities and making medical treatment cheaper for civilians. This will allow people to go to the doctors without having to pay so much, so that they can have the reassurance that they are healthy.”

YEAR 9 Year Adviser Message Year 9 continued to exhibit the school values of PERSIST during Term 2 of their last year of junior school. I am very proud of what they achieved as a year group so far and am very excited to continue seeing Year 9 grow in 2022.

NAPLAN Year 9 students completed NAPLAN testing in Week 3.

This was the first time they had been in this type of testing environment since Year 5, as the Year 7 tests were cancelled due to COVID. Year 9 were mature, considerate and displayed excellent behaviour and work ethic during the testing period. As the largest cohort, they were able to work in the hall under exam conditions and display the PERSIST values while doing so. I am very proud of their diligence during this stressful time.

Elective Excursions In Week 10, Year 9 had the opportunity to attend excursions or incursions for their X elective. Students participated in a range of exciting activities including a visit to the Botanical Gardens for Food Technology and the Family Planning Centre in Penrith for Child Studies. Students thoroughly

Year 9 received their grades for Semester 1 during Week 8.

They participated in personalised learning workshops which allowed them to reflect on their achievements, set new goals for the rest of the year and focus on what they need to develop moving into the senior school next year.

Congratulations to all of the students who achieved outstanding GPAs in Semester 1. During Week 1 of Term 3, we will have our Principal’s Report Assembly where students will receive their official Semester 1 reports.

GOALS Program The GOALS program (formerly known as LEAPS) is up and running again for 2022. 20 Year 9 students have been paired with mentors from Ashurst Law Firm and will complete a combination of focused online sessions, excursions and activities with their mentors in Term 2 and 3. We are excited to be able to provide this opportunity again for our students.

YEAR 10 Year Adviser Message Year 10 started to branch back out in the school ground this term, the athletics carnival, volleyball, AFL Gala Day and the Panther Trophy all provided opportunities to display their extracurricular talents. The athletics carnival also ran smoothly due to the assistance of photographers, marshallers, runners and of course the athletes. It’s going to be a big year ahead! Many Year 10 students have already begun preparing stalls and performances for the upcoming 60th Anniversary Festival as part of their commerce and music electives. I look forward to seeing their hard work in action!

Sport In volleyball and football, Year 10 demonstrated their teamwork by working together with students from other year groups to represent RHHS. A huge congratulations to the Panther Trophy Under 15s team who were the undefeated champions of the whole event.

SALSA Program Year 10 students took on leadership roles in the SALSA program and the Leadership elective classes, mentoring and teaching Year 8 junior students.

Subject Selections Academically this has been a big term for Year 10, still navigating and adapting to the expectations of the senior school. Year 10 also begun considering their subjects selections for the senior school and planning their future pathway in TAFE, university or an apprenticeship.

Excursions 5

Year 10 students participated in programs and excursions to give them a taste of the future, some students attended TAFE once a week, others visited Sydney University and Western Sydney University as part of the Future Focus and Fast Forward programs.

UTS Pasifika Mentoring Experience Day Written by Chelsea Leu and Ambross Mathias Since the start of 2022, 16 Year 10 students have been in the UTS Pasifika Mentoring Program. Every week on a Wednesday we meet with volunteers from the University of Technology Sydney. In these sessions we work on our strengths and finding out future career and learning pathways. On Tuesday 28 June, we went to the UTS Campus at Ultimo. We had to pick 2 sessions to attend- each session was a mini lesson in a real university classroom with real university tutors and students. The sessions included: storytelling, sport & exercise science, business marketing, nursing, game technology, business start-ups, robotics & drones, medical science, journalism, and law. It was a great day for everyone, and we got to meet students from other schools. Our favourite workshop was the robotics session, we got to experiment with drones using an app called Tello Edu. We're looking forward to Term 3, so we can continue our UTS Pasifika Mentoring Program!

Iftar Written by Naba Alhameed What a delight it was to run the 2022 school Iftar at RHHS. The difficulties we have had as a result of the pandemic and worldly issues has highlighted Ramadan's spirit as a time for Muslims and non-Muslims to come together in the face of adversity. Ramadan is a month dedicated to compassion, reflection, and generosity. All of this has been brought to light by Rooty Hill High School's third Iftar. Iftar, also known as futoor (Arabic for "breakfast"), is a feast served at sunset every day during Ramadan. Fasting is one of Ramadan's basic pillars, and individuals who observe the month do not eat or drink anything between sunrise and sundown. Being a part of the Muslim community, discussing my faith with the entire school, and seeing smiles from both the schools Muslim and non-Muslim community was a hope for everyone in accepting one another.

The Iftar was an amazing night, full of food and community strength. I enjoyed how the community came together to share religion and culture. It was delightful to observe the unity and strength within the school and the effort that went into planning it does not go down unrecognised. I look forward to the future Iftars held by the next generations.

Sydney West Open Boys Volleyball Knockout Team The Sydney West Open Boys Volleyball Knockout Team consists of 5 Year 11 students; Joseph Hide, Daniel Prescott, Ucheme Ohiaeri, Blake Puckeridge and Samuel Apilado.

YEAR 11 Year Adviser Message During Term 2, Year 11 embraced the many opportunities available to them at RHHS. For the first time since online learning in 2021, it started to feel like ‘back to normal’ for a lot of students. Year 11 participated in the Athletics Carnival, the IFTAR, ANZAC assembly, Haka Warriors Program, Open Boys Volleyball and Soccer, Cross Country and Zone Cross Country, U@Uni for UTS, ABCN Focus Program and Open Girls Volleyball.

Students faced their first assessment period in Year 11, and remained positive, focused and determined to do their best.

It is pleasing to see such a friendly cohort who are so enthusiastic and supportive of each other.

Athletics Carnival Written by Catherine Schofield On May 19, students attended the Athletics Carnival, which was held at the Charlie Bali Reserve in Doonside. The theme for the carnival was ‘Movie and Game Characters’. I saw so many amazing outfits, from Mario and Luigi, to Snow White and even a giant minion. The day consisted of multiple track and field events, 100m, 200m, 400m, long jump, discus and shot put. There was even a teachers race at the end of the day. The variety in the amount of events held had allowed everyone to try something new or participate in what they liked. After the carnival, the top two places from each event per age group had progressed to the Mt Druitt Zone Athletics carnival held on the 10th of June at Parker Street reserve. Many students had attended the carnival to represent RHHS and had successfully completed the events.

I noticed how every time one of our fellow peers had raced, 6

everyone would get up and stand at the fence to cheer them on as they came down the final straight. The positivity and motivation shown on the day was exceptional and encouraged all athletes to do their very best which led to many top three places throughout the day. Overall, this year's Athletics Carnival was a great experience which allowed me to interact with new people and successfully demonstrate the PERSIST values when representing Rooty Hill.

Written by Fatima Baaruud In the ABCN Focus program, we learned about what leadership is in general, the characteristics a leader needs, and confidence. It has really helped me realize that I am capable of anything. Before I joined this program, I never viewed myself as being “Leader worthy” and had little faith that this program would actually change that idea I had. I was really surprised and shocked just how talking and listening to each other's stories and views on leadership and confidence would actually help me believe in myself more.

equipment list, and planned out how we should set up the audio system for the ANZAC assembly. We tested the audio system to ensure it was set up correctly and ensured the volume wasn’t too loud. Then afterwards, we packed up the audio system and debriefed.

60th Anniversary Soft Launch Assembly The 60th Anniversary soft launch assembly was held on 14 June. Ariana Iosefo and Elijah Jennings of Year 11 worked alongside Feofaaki Sefesi and Reueta Tuiafiso of Year 12 to perform Journey’s ‘Don’t Stop Believin’.

Report Presentation Address Good morning. In 18 weeks (129 days) you will have your last assembly at Rooty hill High School – the Graduation.

By then you will have done the Trial examinations, completed your major works and finished your assessment tasks.

By then, you will be looking back at what you have achieved in each subject, and you will have some idea of whether you have achieved what you wanted and how ready you are for the final examinations starting 18 days after the Graduation.

With your teachers, you will have done what no other year has done. You will have spent the 3 senior years dealing with the impact of COVID-19. And we can feel the impact.

Yesterday was Week A so we finish at 1pm. As students left the school, they were quiet. We have learnt to speak softly into our screens, so we do not disturb others. We have learnt to wait our turn in a 1:1 online way where group work and noise draw an immediate reaction. This has worked really well for some of you, but I want to suggest that in the next 129 days you go back to consider adding more of the 500 routines you had at the end of Year 9 to your set.

Let me explain. You are the Class of 2022. You are the class that represents the 60 years of this school and the class that best represents our culture and values. What will be your story when we meet at graduation? Across the state there are over 75000 students sitting the HSC this year and they have also had 3 years of COVID-19. There are 150 of you. How will you play the next 129 days as part of #TeamRootyHill?

How will you help each other as well as yourself? Will you use the rest of Term 2 and 3 to do the things that have worked for HSC students at RHHS in the past? Over the next 129 days, will you: 1.

YEAR 12 Year Adviser Message With their schooling career heading towards the finish line, Year 12 proved once again that being excellent leaders and role models of the PERSIST values to other year groups is now second nature. Year 12 participated in a wide range of activities, events and sports throughout the term along with maintaining their studies and preparing for the HSC Trial Examinations. Looking ahead to the future we have two exciting terms full of opportunities, excitement and achievement. Some highlights include the Higher School Certificate Examinations, Graduation and of course Formal.

Nepean Careers Expo The Careers Expo was a great opportunity for students to look at the different options they have when leaving school.

There were hands on workshops, University and TAFE stalls, and plenty of other options to help Year 12 find paths to their desired futures. With extremely high attendance it was highly beneficial to most students based on the feedback that was received.

Year 12 Class Photo When the day finally came to take the Year 12 Class of 2022 year group photo, the students could not have been more excited. After multiple delays due to the weather, they relished the opportunity to dress sharp, get together with friends, have a laugh and show off their selfie game.

CAPA Artist of the Week Congratulations to our ‘Artist of the Week’ exhibitors for Term 2. The showcase of winners were selected from Visual Arts classes from Years 7 to 12; Khaila Chavaria, Shohana Hossain, Serina Scopelliti, Jennifer Buckley, Ella Munday, Taylor Cassar, Duaa Saeed and Henrietta Ah Lam.

Western Sydney University – Fast Forward Conference In Week 8, Year 12 students went on an excursion to WSU Parramatta Campus. It was a wonderful experience and gave students the chance to understand and acknowledge what university is all about. Students went to multiple different courses to learn about topics studied that interested them and pathways to access those courses. They were able to experience what it is like to be a university student, managing their time and finding their own way to different locations around the university.

Students with 100% Attendance in Term 2 The following students have been recognised with a Significant Achievement Award this term for achieving 100% attendance.

HSC Trial Examinations Year 12 completed their HSC Trial Examinations across Week 9 and 10. As always, the key to exam success was adequate study, dedication, and utilising resources like the Senior Study. With the pressure mounting and apprehension that this is the first time Year 12 have experienced exams on this scale, Year 12 took it all in their stride showing their resilience, determination, and tenacity. They were frequently commended on their maturity, work ethic and cooperation by the staff and invigilators. Well done Year 12.

ANZAC Ceremony Written by Joel Zahra On Friday 29th April, staff and students gathered in the main quad to partake in a ceremony to commemorate ANZAC Day for 2022. The ceremony saw the involvement of staff and students alike, as the wreaths were laid along with the playing of the Last Post and the Ode of Remembrance.

Students were asked to pause a reflect for a minute's silence and remember our connections to the ANZACs and our Pacific neighbours.
