PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Every term in the last two years I have reported on our growing success and achievement as a school. Some readers might wonder how this is possible.

It is possible because students, staff and almost all parents share the values of the school and now we have business and philanthropic partners joining us.

In this one very short (9 week) term we have: 1. Launched our partnership with Social Ventures Australia having been idenGfied as one of three Powerhouse Schools (centres of innovaGon in 21st century learning).

2. Conducted outreach programs in Mandarin and Chinese culture as part of our Confucius Classroom program 3. Had success in sport in cross-­‐ country, athleGcs, volleyball, rugby league, soccer and AFL. 4. Achieved our best results in inter school debaGng and hosted the Young Writers' Awards.

5. ParGcipated in leadership programs for students and staff.

6. Recognised Tianna Edwards (Zonta Young Indigenous Achiever award), Clare Da Silva (Premier's Anzac

including almost 100 parents.

7. Met to determine enrolments for Year 7 in 2015. Again, we have had far more applicaGons than we can accept and we are very pleased to conGnue to be a school of choice in our community.

8. ConGnued to use more social media to contact families and, from the start of next term, all parents will have access to "Sentral" to see informaGon about their children's a^endance, reports and learning performance.

9. Completed NAPLAN examinaGons, Year 12 trial examinaGons and reports for students in Years 7 -­‐ 10 and interviewed every student in Years 7 -­‐ 10 as part of personalised learning week.

10. ConGnued to improve our work with students in reading, wriGng and thinking as part of the Improving Literacy and Numeracy NaGonal Partnership. Year 7 and 8 students have conGnued to show improvement in reading and the school

(from pg1) is very pleased with the effort students are making.

This is what we do well as a school and be^er than many schools. We have a great sense of purpose in our school -­‐ to do whatever we can to make sure every student has the opportunity to do his or her best.

CongratulaGons to A=lla Erzurumlu in Year 10 who won a gold medal in the Australia Cup CompeGGon (Freestyle Wrestling) in Victoria in May. Such a fantasGc achievement, well done, AGlla!

We are working extremely hard on delivering our school plan to lib expectaGons, capacity and achievement.

Tiana Edwards wins District 24 ( N S W ) Z o n t a A w a r d f o r Outstanding Young Indigenous Woman CongratulaGons to Tiana Edwards of Year 12 for winning the coveted Zonta Award for Outstanding Young Indigenous Woman. The a w a r d r e c o g n i s e d T i a n a ’ s exemplary commitment to her studies, consistent achievement in Academia, contribuGons in the area of Indigenous leadership and her future goals. Tiana was recognised formally for her a c h i e v e m e n t s a t t h e S o c i a l Ventures Australia launch on May 26 and was awarded with a book, cerGficate and $500 to go towards her future studies. UNSW Nulgiri Winter School Scholarship Success Tiana Edwards of Year 12 and Jay Edwards of Year 12 have both been successful in gaining a place in UNSW’s presGgious Winter School program over the July School holidays. Jay will be studying Business and Tiana will be studying Medicine as part of a program that involves living on c a m p u s f o r o n e w e e k a n d parGcipaGng in University ‘taster’ classes along with sessions on Aboriginal culture and leadership.

A special menGon must go to Jay for being successful for the second year in a row studying Business.

Gili Scholarship awards $1000 to two of our students Rooty Hill High School is thrilled to report that two of our indigenous students have been successful in gaining a Gili scholarship for Indigenous leadership valued at $1000 each. 20 were awarded this year out of more than 100 applicants in a very compeGGve field.

BriQany Ryan of Year 10 was nominated for outstanding young student leader and Jay Edwards of Y e a r 1 2 f o r O u t s t a n d i n g Leadership as a senior.

The scholarship awards come from Western Sydney region of The Department of EducaGon & CommuniGes. The students will be able to use the scholarship towards EducaGonal expenses. A huge congratulaGons to you both.

LEARNING SUPPORT The STLA faculty and students have had an extremely busy first semester for 2014. It is great seeing students being so acGvely involved in their school work which is resulGng in many improvements and successful outcomes in all aspects of their learning.

Personalised Learning Interviews Every student in Years 7-­‐10 completed a personalised learning interview at the end of this term.

Students were able to access and discuss their semester 1 report and prepare a personalised learning plan to develop and set new and achievable goals to strive for, for semester 2. These i n t e r v i e w s a r e e x t r e m e l y important for students as it allows them to idenGfy where they’re at and what they need to work on. It is important for parents to read over the plan with their child to help them achieve the goals that they have set.

homework centre, Rooty Hill provides a quiet environment where our students can study and complete school work with assistance from our staff. Rooty Hill High Schools homework centre runs every Tuesday abernoon from 3:05pm unGl 4:15pm. All students are welcome to a^end.

Learning Centre The learning centre at Rooty Hill allows easy access to a variety of learning materials. Students can also self refer for extra assistance on subject specific skills. Our learning centre is open to all students at lunchGme to complete any homework or assessment tasks.

Jumping for Jobs Rooty Hill High School offers students a broad range of support, p a r G c u l a r l y f o r o u r S e n i o r Students. Senior Students can access the Senior Support staff and faciliGes to ensure they can uGlise available assistance and support every step of the way to achieve t h e i r i n d i v i d u a l g o a l s a n d aspiraGons. Senior Support Staff includes: Mr Ali-­‐Senior Support Teacher. Mrs Camillos-­‐Careers A d v i s o r / P A C T S T r a i n e r . M s Marchich-­‐Senior Student Support/ Job Club Program/PACTS Trainer.

During Term 2 a group of Year 12 students parGcipated in the Job Club Program facilitated by Ms Marchich. Students acquired skills and knowledge including: How to idenGfy appropriate job choices, how to plan for goals, developing a resume and interview skills.

Homework Centre Doing homework in a crowded home and having no-­‐one able to offer help makes it harder to get good results in class. With the

Mrs Camillos and Ms Marchich also deliver a PACTS (Parents as C a r e e r T r a n s i G o n S u p p o r t ) program aimed at helping parents support their children through high school.

Navid Azizi, one of the program’s parGcipants, cheerfully expressed his graGtude through highlighGng that he “was worth something” at the conclusion of the program and another parGcipant, Burhan Uz, took great pride in “genng prepared for life outside of school”.

JUNIOR SCHOOL LEAPS 20 Year 9 students began the Leaps (Lawyers Encouraging and AssisGng Promising Students) program this term. Students have met with their mentors 3 Gmes in the city and are already building strong posiGve relaGonships. The students involved have been learning about stereotypes, goal secng as well as team work and leadership skills.

Digital Workshops During this first semester Years 7, 8 and 9 parGcipated in a digital w o r k s h o p t h a t c o v e r e d appropriate use of social media. It is well recognised that social media allows our students to learn and grow, it is essenGal that they are aware of the impacts of misuse of this technology.

Tell Them From Me Survey Students in Years 7, 8 and 9 completed the ‘Tell Them From Me Survey’. Students have been working hard with their Year Advisers to ensure extracurricular acGviGes are designed to help address the areas requiring a^enGon. The results will be conGnued to be communicated to students as a way of sharing knowledge and understanding with students, encouraging

acceptance and diversity and designing programs in areas of need.

“What’s your State of Mind” video conference A small group of students from Year 8 and 9 parGcipated in the NRL “What’s your State of Mind” video conference. It is the first of three sessions looking at affirming student self-­‐worth and individual idenGty as well as encouraging the ‘ t e a m ’ a p p r o a c h t o m e n t a l wellness.

SEPEP Year 8 have spent the term in PDHPE refining their sobball skills and preparing for their SEPEP Gala Day where they will take on each other to see who has learnt the most about sobball and who has w h a t i t t a k e s t o b e S E P E P Champions. Personalised Learning Week This term, all of Years 7, 8 and 9 has taken part in Personalised Learning Week. This allowed students to see their report grades and analyse if they have met their goals from last semester. They take this Gme to set new and achievable

goals for semester 2.

SRC Induc=on This term, the Year 7 SRC and Ambassadors were inducted.

There were over 60 students who have been acknowledged as either SRC or Ambassadors. This is such a great achievement from Year 7, and the number of students for leadership roles conGnue to grow.

Celebra=on Week Y e a r 7 c e l e b r a t e d a v e r y successful start to high school with a week-­‐long CelebraGon Week. Students experienced the IMAX theatre in Darling Harbour, played Laser Tag and Tenpin Bowling, completed a fun but challenging high ropes course in Western Sydney Parklands and compeGGvely parGcipated in the Amazing Race acGviGes in Sydney Olympic Park, Homebush.

All students represented the school in a mature manner, upholding the PERSIST values.

SENIOR SCHOOL Year 12 Year 12 Trial Higher School Cer=ficate Examina=ons 161 Year 12 students have just completed their Trial Higher School CerGficate ExaminaGons.

Students took part in a number of study skills, seminars and also undertook their own study programs to prepare for the examinaGons. Next term will be extremely busy for Year 12 with their final assessment tasks, major p r o j e c t s a n d t h e Y e a r 1 2 GraduaGon which will be held on Friday 19th September. We wish all Year 12 students the best of luck!

Year 11 Year 11 D.A.R.E. Leaders This term 34 Year 11 students were leaders for the Year 10 D.A.R.E. Program. The Year 11 leaders, along with PDHPE teachers, were responsible for r u n n i n g g r o u p a c G v i G e s , workshops and team building acGviGes with Year 10 students.

The D.A.R.E. Program is a welfare program that aimed to encourage every Year 10 student to believe that they can achieve their personal best. All of the Year 11

leaders were outstanding role models and leaders on the day.

Year 11 University of Western Sydney Open Day Year 11 students a^ended the University of Western Sydney Open Day in Week 6 this term.

During their Gme there, students got to a^end lectures, experience university life and network with fellow students and University staff. Students were able to gain a be^er understanding of the courses offered by the University of Western Sydney.

Year 11 Crossroads All Year 11 students completed the compulsory PDHPE Crossroads Program. Year 11 was invited to a^end the Crossroads Camp, which was held at The Great Aussie Bush Camp, Kingcumber.

The camp was a huge success.

Students who completed the

program at school parGcipated in various team building acGviGes, drug and relaGonship seminars and ended the program by compeGng against each other in AMF Bowling and Laser Skirmish.

Young Women’s Leadership Conference S h an te l K u mar an d Al y s s a Herning of Year 11 represented Rooty Hill High School at the Young Women’s Leadership Conference early this term. Both girls were selected due to their leadership potenGal. The Young Women’s Leadership Conference, organised by the NSW State Parliament, encourages, fosters and promotes young women to acGvely parGcipate in leadership posiGons.

Year 10 Year 10 Personalised Learning Interviews Year 10 has completed their personalised learning interviews for the first semester. Students had the opportunity to discuss their half-­‐yearly reports, effort, e s t a b l i s h s t r e n g t h s a n d weaknesses and also develop goals to strive for. This gave every student the opportunity to discuss results, behaviour, a^endance, concerns, support and goals.

Year 10 Super Study Sessions This was designed specifically for year 10 students. It is great to see the increasing number of students using this to benefit their learning.

S t u d e n t s h a v e w o r k e d o n assessment tasks, created study groups and completed homework, showing that their huge step into Senior School is being tackled head on. A big thanks to all the teachers involved.

CREATIVE AND PERFORMING ARTS The collage of images represents some of the work students have been creaGng in the CAPA Faculty.

The works below reflect their many achievements and their abundance of creaGvity. The students in the Junior School have produced many different artworks including profiles, portraits, objects, creepy creatures and many musical items this semester. In the Senior School Year 10 had the task of creaGng a portrait of Ms Andrews using a variety of mediums and techniques and Year 11 explored the technique of AbstracGon. CongratulaGons to all the Year 12 Visual Arts and Music students who are progressing well on their Body of Works and their Major Musical items and to the Year 11 Photography students who s u c c e s s f u l l y e x h i b i t e d t h e i r photographic portraits in A block.

As always, this was a fantasGc abernoon of celebraGon, thanks to all the staff from the Learning Neighbourhood community who helped make it a success.

ENGLISH English has been on fire this term!

Between debaGng, the musical, Writers Club and Poetry Slam, not to menGon preparing Year 12 for Trials and wriGng reports, we have been busy, busy, busy.

Members of the Poetry Slam team competed at district finals in May, where two students received honourable menGons; although, sadly, we did not place. The W r i G n g C l u b c o n G n u e s t o diligently pursue excellence and is preparing for a number of compeGGons over the coming term.

Meanwhile teachers in the faculty conGnue to make Gme to tutor students who are seeking a deeper understanding of their texts or development of skills, and this is resulGng in some notable improvements in responses. We look forward to marking the Year 12 exams.

Drama Musical Produc=on – “Monster” Like last year’s “Gangster’s Paradise”, this year’s producGon of “Monster” is completely student driven. Penned by m u s i c a l v e t e r a n s K e a n n a B a l d w i n -­‐ H a r t m a n n , J o s h u a Lancaster and Daniel Edmonds of Year 10, “Monster” is on schedule to hit the stage term 4 this year.

This year’s audiGons were our biggest yet with students from year 7 to year 11 showcasing their talents in singing, dancing and acGng. Our dedicated cast has been rehearsing since the start of term 2, staying back Gll 5pm every Tuesday and Wednesday. Watch this space“Monster” is on its way!

Young Writers’ Presenta=on A Learning Neighbourhood Event On Wednesday 28th May 2014, the 1 1 t h a n n u a l L e a r n i n g Neighbourhood Young Writer’s PresentaGon was held. This year the theme/concept that students were asked to write about was family. The abernoon was a celebraGon of the fantasGc efforts of student writers from the four s c h o o l s i n o u r L e a r n i n g Neighbourhood group which comprises Eastern Creek Public, Minchinbury Public, Rooty Hill Public and Rooty Hill High. Each year we invite a renowned author to speak at the presentaGon and this year was the turn of Lisa Shanahan, author of Bear and Chook and My Big BirkeG. Lisa was extremely happy to speak on the occasion and spoke eloquently about the crab of wriGng and the i n fl u e n c e o f f a m i l y .

CongratulaGons to Sharon Rogers in Year 8 who was the overall school winner for RHHS.

Also, a menGon of thanks goes to Alessandra Delfin and Daniella Delfin for providing the music for the event.

Deba=ng CongratulaGons to the Year 11 and 12 DebaGng Team including, Jaydon Carling, Ege Karsanbas, Seilala Latai, Olivia Morales and S a s h a V u c i c e v i c o n t h e i r parGcipaGon in the Premier's D e b a G n g C h a l l e n g e . T h e y c o m p e t e d i n a n e x t r e m e l y challenging zone and are to be commended for their outstanding efforts. A further congratulaGons and good luck to the Year 10 DebaGng Teams including, Ahmad Aldahesh, Keanna Baldwin-­‐ Hartmann, Daniel Edmonds & Rachelle Ra=vo and Sana Azizdel, Maelody Gevaro, Nash Wiseman & Esra Yilmaz, as both teams were successful in their Round 1 debates against Chifley College S h a l v e y . T h e s e t e a m s w i l l complete their round 2 and 3 debates at the beginning of round three and we wish them the best of luck and further success!

HSIE Premiers ANZAC Scholar Clare Da Silva retuned from the presGgious ANZAC Scholarship Tour of South Korea early this t e r m . S h e w a s a p r o u d ambassador to Rooty Hill High School, Public EducaGon and the country.

UBS Finance Academy Winner The UBS Finance Academy is to provide leadership in banking educaGon with a parGcular focus on senior high school students.

Hannah Deo was one of fiby Year 11 students across NSW, Victoria and ACT to parGcipate which will run at Macquarie University in July.

Mock Trial Team Update The Rooty Hill High School Mock Trial team has conGnued their winning streak progressing to the regional semi-­‐finals. The team, which consists of Clare Da Silva in Year 11 and Year 10 students Rose Al-­‐Kahili, Rachelle Ra=vo, Nilufar Shah, Robyn Bascara, Adrienne Mazo, and Iris Ongkingco, have conGnued to represent the school in an outstanding manner.

Excursions and Incursions ANZAC Day Assembly On Friday 11th of April, RHHS held its ANZAC DAY CommemoraGve Assembly. We were very fortunate and privileged this year to have the company of our special guests from Blacktown RSL Sub-­‐Branch Mr John O’Brien and Mr Michael Reid.

We look very forward to having t h e m a g a i n n e x t y e a r t o commemorate the 100th Anzac Day Centenary.

Start Smart Financial Mee=ng Y e a r 9 C o m m e r c e s t u d e n t s a^ended a ‘Start Smart’ financial l i t e r a c y w o r k s h o p b y t h e C o m m o n w e a l t h B a n k . T h e workshop presented real-­‐life examples and case studies which cover concepts such as income tax, superannuaGon, employee rights, how to read a pay slip; right through to strategies for saving and becoming a savvy consumer.

Year 11 & 12 Legal Studies Excursion to Supreme Court of NSW Close to 40 students parGcipated in this fantasGc opportunity to see the law in acGon.

Y11 + Y12 M o de r n His to r y Excursion: Sydney Jewish Museum The senior Modern History classes visited the Sydney Jewish Museum.

Year 11 students parGcipated in the workshop ‘Unearthing the H o l o c a u s t : S e r n i k i a n d t h e Australian War Crimes Trials’. Year

1 2 s t u d e n t s u n d e r t o o k a workshop which focussed on their HSC Personality, Leni Riefenstahl.

Working In the Classroom: Students in Year 7 and Year 9 History have made History themselves this semester. They are among the first students in Australia to be taught using the new History Curriculum.

Out and About M s Y a s o d a i S e l v a k u m a r a n presented at the Asia EducaGon FoundaGon conference in Sydney o n T u e s d a y J u n e 1 7 . T h e conference brings together Educators from all over Australia to showcase Asian Literacy.

Aboriginal educa=on AIME kicks off for another year!

T h e A u s t r a l i a n I n d i g e n o u s Mentoring Experience program started up again this term for students in Years 9, 10 and 12.

CongratulaGons to the following students for their fantasGc parGcipaGon: Year 9 students: Tyler Hopkinson, Nathan Field, Leroy Jones, Danny Edwards, Erika Simpson, Nita Jennings, Tabatha Starr. Year 10 students: Kiarna Overs and BriQany Ryan.

Year 12 students: Tiana Edwards, Jay Edwards, Carl Ryan and James Sinclair. This semester students in the AFL Indigenous Academies have been working to produce a video on ReconciliaGon under the guidance of Program Manager: Luke Penrith. The video will be launched to our school community officially as part of NAIDOC celebraGons early in Term 3. The Academy program also features in the June EdiGon of The Australian EducaGon.

COMPUTING/ TECHNOLOGY What a semester it has been for the ICT faculty. It has certainly been a busy and evenxul Gme with many students gecng acGvely involved with the fun and exciGng acGviGes we have on board.

Anime Club This term, we started our own Rooty Hill High Anime Club.

Students from all years meet every Tuesday during lunch Gme to discuss which characters are their favourite, which they dislike and discuss which anime’s they have recently watched. The members are even creaGng their own Anime characters. All students are welcome to a^end.

The meeGngs are held in A004 with Mrs Callaghan.

Year 7 IST All Year 7 students were provided the opportunity to learn with iPads this semester. This acGvity provided students with an understanding of the learning differences that exist between creaGng classwork with an iPad versus a tradiGonal computer.

S t u d e n t s t h e n t o o k t h i s knowledge to wriGng a persuasive piece of wriGng on their Class Blogs.

Year 8 IST Students in year 8 conGnue to impress us with the unique and innovaGve work that is being produced in the classroom. As part of their project on Japan,

students were required to create a movie on a Japanese invenGon. Some of these projects looked like real life blockbusters! Also below are assessment tasks completed by J o y C a y a b y a b a n d C a i t l i n Puckeridge. The levels of creaGvity, imaginaGon and skill used by Year 8 students for this task was absolutely outstanding.

Year 11 VET IDT Year 11 students have just fi n i s h e d t h e i r fi r s t f o r m a l assessment task. They are embarking on their next cluster of units, Installing & opGmising OperaGng systems and using d i a g n o s G c t o o l s . A t t h e compleGon of these units these students should then be able to diagnose and solve a range of computer based issues at school and at home. All students have now completed their work readiness program and some students are set to venture into their first 35 hours of work placement at the end of this term. We look forward to having them share their experiences with teachers and their peers.

Year 12 IDT Most Year 12 students have now finalised their mandatory work placement commitments and have been able to share their posiGve experiences.

As Year 12 student have just fi n i s h e d t h e i r H S C T r i a l ExaminaGons, we now enter the final stages of this course. All students are acGvely involved in finalising all assessment items and are busy preparing for the HSC examinaGon. Their efforts are to be commended and the ICT faculty wishes them all the very best for their HSC.

MATHEMATICS/LOTE The Chess Club meets every Tuesday at lunch in D118.

AMC 2014 T h e A u s t r a l i a n M a t h e m a G c s CompeGGon is on Thursday 7th of August 2014. The cost for each student is $6.00. Students will need to hand in their payment and note by the 26th of June 2014. This is a great opportunity for all students from Years 7 to 12 to parGcipate, not just the mathemaGcally gibed.

Maths Olympiad The 28 th annual Australasian Problem Solving MathemaGcal Olympiads (APSMO) is underway.

RHHS students Nansita Charan, Narisha Prasad, Ky Staal and Jason Ma are part of an overall number of 9100 students from Australia, New Zealand and neighbouring countries taking part in this contest this year.

Introduce the blended learning with Chromebooks The math/LOTE faculty has rolled out 16 Chromebooks in our classrooms. We are thoroughly enjoying this learning gadget which is light, fast, versaGle and secure.

Chromebooks can: Create and collaborate using Google Drive.

Do more with the web using Chrome Browser.

Flip the classroom using YouTube.

Open educaGonal resources beyond textbooks.

Assessment of, for and as learning using Google Form.

We believe Chromebook will assist students to learn more deeply, more widely and be^er.

Please book a Chromebook test drive with your math and LOTE teacher and you won’t be disappointed.

T w o y e a r 1 0 e x t e n s i o n MathemaGcs students have achieved brilliant results in mathemaGcs this semester including gecng 100% in the half yearly extension examinaGon. Both Emma Jurd and Susie Tang have put in an incredible effort to achieve these results.

LOTE LOTE students from Years 7, 9, 10 and 12 have parGcipated in the 2014 Language Perfect World Championships (the biggest online language compeGGon).

This was the second Gme that Rooty Hill High School students w e r e i n v o l v e d i n a w o r l d language compeGGon. RHHS was ranked 23nd for Chinese in NSW out of 135 schools. The following students are to be congratulated for their amazing effort: Silver Award: Jason Ma, Students scored over 100 points: Komal Gupta, Sanjani Vikash, Samara Colwell, Grant Perez, Rotsen V i l l e g a s , J a n e L e e , M a j a Zlomislic, Deborah Gu, Satya M a k a r a . T h e C o n f u c i u s Classroom China Club offered a range of cultural acGviGes to

R H H S s t u d e n t s t h i s t e r m .

Students across the whole school had the opportunity to taste Chinese food. Students also parGcipated in Tai-­‐chi lessons to enhance students' understanding of Chinese culture. The feedback from the students has been f a n t a s G c . T h e C o n f u c i u s classroom also offered a Chinese language and culture program (Outreach Program) to students from Eastern Creek Public School this term. The students had the opportunity to parGcipate in language and culture lessons to enrich their knowledge in Chinese language and culture. The LOTE faculty would like to congratulate all the students from Years 7, 9, 10 and 12 for their enthusiasm in Chinese language learning.

PDHPE Another busy, exciGng and successful term in PDHPE where students have been achieving educaGonal, social and sporGng outcomes. All years are hard at work consistently improving in all aspects of their schooling.

SEPEP This term during their pracGcal lessons all of Year 8 has been p a r G c i p a G n g i n a S E P E P compeGGon. SEPEP is a student r u n s o b b a l l c o m p e G G o n promoGng leadership, teamwork, excellence and sportsmanship.

Students compete with their t e a m i n a r o u n d r o b i n compeGGon culminaGng in a finals day to be held early next term. Each team has a Captain and a Coach and over the term l e a r n a b o u t t h e t a c G c s , sportsmanship, leadership and teamwork that is required in order to have a successful Sobball team. Literacy PDHPE have been the lead faculty for the schools wriGng scaffold, and has seen the implementaGon of the SEXE wriGng plaxorm, standing for STATE, EXPLAIN, EXAMPLE, ELABORATE. This scaffold has been delivered t h r o u g h o u t t h e s c h o o l , specifically to years 7 and 8. The goal of this strategy is to increase the amount, as well as the depth, of students’ responses to develop a n d d e l i v e r a g r e a t e r understanding.

SALSA SALSA (Students As LifeStyle AcGvists) is a program designed to improve the health of students at R H H S t h r o u g h f o c u s i n g o n nutriGon, physical acGvity and an overall balanced lifestyle. Year 10 Peer Leaders are trained by S y d n e y U n i v e r s i t y M e d i c a l students to deliver 4 health lessons to all Year 8 classes. Leadership During term two the year nine leadership classes have been busy applying their leadership skills to a number of acGviGes around the school and local community.

These include assisGng with the running of the school and Mt Drui^ zone cross country and organising their own ‘Amazing Race’ Leadership excursion.

Students are in the process of planning the World’s Biggest Classroom event which will be held later in term three.

Year 12 PDHPE The year 12 PDHPE classes have been working studiously toward their trial examinaGons. The students have started to increase the intensity of their efforts looking to peak at the right Gme of the year. Extra study sessions with PDHPE teachers and an understanding of the PDHPE syllabus will allow students a good opportunity to achieve their personal best. Good luck year 12.

PASS Excursion to Cables A s p a r t o f t h e i r s u b j e c t enrichment, Year 9 PASS X went for a day at Cables Water Ski Park.

Aber a lot of iniGal crashes the standard of the knee-­‐boarding was outstanding. A special menGon goes to Joshua Klumper for his outstanding muscular endurance. A few brave students a^empted Wake boarding with differing success. Another special menGon goes to Joseph Sanita for displaying persistence in order to e v e n t u a l l y m a s t e r t h e Wakeboard.

SPORT Volleyball The Open Girls and Boys teams have qualified for the top 16 NSW CHS volleyball championships to be held at the end of Term 2.

RHHS entered a record 11 teams in the NSW volleyball Schools Cup with 5 of them making the Grand Final and 2 teams winning gold medals. The finalists were: Opens girls – Gold, U17 boys – Gold, Opens boys – Silver, U16 girls – Silver, U15 boys – Silver.

Rugby League The U/13s progressed to the Grand Final of the Panther Trophy held at Western Weekender Stadium. Unfortunately they lost 8-­‐6. CongratulaGons to their Captain Louis Reyes and all the boys involved.

The Under 14s rugby league team are currently undefeated from 8 games winning the grand final of the Panther Trophy and earning entry into the State Cup. They have also made the knockout stage of the Buckley Shield. A great effort by captain Junio Sene and the team.

O p e n B o y s R u g b y L e a g u e Competed at the 2014 Panther Trophy. Their only loss on the day going down 6-­‐4 to event finalists Kingswood HS.

Soccer The Open Boys’ Soccer team progressed to the Sydney West grand final where they lost to Winmalee HS 2-­‐1.

The year 8 boys and girls team were successful, winning the Wanderers Cup.

Athle=cs C o n g r a t u l a G o n s t o N a t a l i e O’Connor and Brandon Ford for winning the Blue Ribband 100m sprint at the school carnival. We had an amazing 21 students make it through to the Sydney West Carnival.

Cross Country Outstanding parGcipaGon at the zone carnival resulted in our school claiming Mt Drui^ Champions.

Dylan Curmi has progressed through to the CHS carnival aber placing 6th at Sydney West.

Cricket The opens boys played against Wyndham College, but were unfortunately beaten. We saw s o m e b i g h i t s f r o m A l l a n Tuigamala and Joshua Deo and fantasGc bowling from Ryan Fitzgerald.

Boys Baseball The boys played their first game against Crestwood High School.

Last inning saw the boys take the win 10-­‐9. Unfortunately they lost their next game against Model Farms HS. Touch The year 9/10 boys and girls touch t e a m s p u t i n s o m e g o o d performances throughout the Sydney West Gala day, in parGcular A= Maa, Mys=que Paul and Brian Too.

Swimming RHHS successfully defended its Gtle as the Premier school in Mt D r u i ^ z o n e . S p e c i a l commendaGon to Jarred Wright who progressed through to the CHS carnival.

Spor=ng Achievements Jack Hall won 5 gold and 1 silver at the NaGonal GymnasGcs CompeGGon.

Allan Tuigamala will represent the Sydney Brumbies in AFL and NSW All Schools in Volleyball.

Nina Laurenson and Taissa Pereira will represent NSW Under 19s All Schools in Volleyball.

Kyle Blando and Denilson Pereira will represent NSW Under 17s All Schools in Volleyball.

Mark Torzar will represent NSW Under 19s All Schools in Volleyball.

Felipe Zapata Castro will compete for NSW CHS at the Australian Soccer CompeGGon. Nina Laurenson, Setaleki Mafi, Mark Torzar represented NSW CHS at the Trans-­‐Tasman CompeGGon held in NZ. Joshua Deo will represent NSW Under 16s in Volleyball.

SCIENCE Science and Technology Day Once again Rooty Hill High School was host to the Year 5 students from our Partner Primary Schools.

This year our hard working Year 9 and Year 10 students were involved with the hands on teaching of the experiments to the primary school students. This was a phenomenal success. Our Year 9 and Year 10 students interacted extremely well with the younger students who responded

Science compe==on This year’s Science compeGGon a^racted double the number of students from last year. 59 students parGcipated, eager to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of science. The students worked hard during the exam and did their very best.

Year 7 Projects Year 7 students have been working extremely hard on their second major project for this year. They are construcGng a book of Australian landforms which will be compiled and published both online as a flip book and in hard copy for the library. Many groups of students have already produced some excepGonal work that will contribute to this high quality book.

This book will be available for parents and other students of the school community to enjoy.

Year 11 Hospitality have se^led in to the rigour of the Hospitality VET course. They have completed their first work placement, with some outstanding and impressive comments from employers. They have also been involved in preparing food for and serving at many school funcGons and prepared an amazing feast of morning tea items for the World’s Biggest Morning Tea. Well Done to Maddison Kearins who was offered work for her outstanding ability and professional manner in the coffee shop.

Year 12 Have been working hard all semester and were well prepared for the Trial HSC ExaminaGons which they have just completed. Good luck Year 12 and we look forward to seeing the fantasGc results.
