’tis the season
There are few things I anticipate as eagerly as Christmas. Not just the day of, but the entire season. The minute the turkey is cleared from Thanksgiving dinner, I’m ready to turn on the holiday music and whip out the gift wrap. While all I want to do is soak up the holiday spirit, I find that December inevitably turns out to be one of the most hectic months of the year—I reckon it is for you, too. So, this year, I aim to slow down and savor the season a little more. I found inspiration for this frame of mind in working on this month’s feature stories, which highlight families who seem to embrace the phrase “home for the holidays.” For example, designer Jill Lawrence told us about some “serious cookie baking” that takes place in her kitchen with her daughter (page 40). Alicia Armstrong, known for her blog, “Our Vintage Nest,” says that this year each of her children will have their own three-foot tree in their room to decorate (page 48). And Kirstin and Glen Johnson, whose outdoor living space looks so cozy and relaxed, could most likely be found sitting around the fireplace roasting marshmallows as you read this (page 54). As for me? I think I’ll make the most of these precious winter weeks with a few of my favorite things: White Christmas on the TV, a roaring fire in the fireplace, and a spiked hot chocolate in hand. Owner Ashley Harris says the new look gives the space, which is located in Little Rock’s Pleasant Ridge Town Center, an “overall brightness.” “The one thing we look forward to the most for our customers in the newly remodeled store is a better traffic flow with a light feel,” Harris says. AS AN ART FORM, IS THERE SOMETHING IN PARTICULAR THAT INTERESTS YOU ABOUT WORKING WITH THE LEATHER AND YOUR HANDS? Yes, definitely—the fact that it’s all me. My hands and I are the only ones responsible for beginning, finishing, and then guaranteeing the product. IS THERE A PARTICULAR TYPE OF LEATHER YOU USE? Most of the leather I use is from a tannery called Wickett & Craig. They’ve been around for 150 years. I prefer their English bridle leather; it’s vegetable-tanned, incredibly durable, and ages beautifully with minimal care. For my wallets, I use another vegetable-tanned leather called Buttero, which is from the Conceria Walpier Tannery in Italy. It’s by far my favorite.
YOU MENTIONED THAT YOU WERE RESPONSIBLE FOR EVERYTHING. IS THERE ANYONE WHO WORKS ALONGSIDE YOU? Right now, I’m the only person physically creating the pieces. However, I do have massive financial and moral support from my wife. You will see her anywhere I’m selling the products. She is my champion and the reason I can do this full-time. She is also a far better salesperson.

TELL US HOW YOU GOT YOUR START IN LEATHER WORKING. HAVE YOU ALWAYS HAD AN INTEREST IN THIS CRAFT? Though I have a fashion design degree, it is something I have only been interested in recently. I had no idea leather crafting on this level even existed. Several years ago I began working with the late Joe Brogdon making belts from repurposed leather and saddle tack. He began developing his own designs and needed some sewing done. To keep with his rustic handmade feel, I began teaching myself how to hand sew with two needles and thread. It creates what is called the saddle stitch. It’s the same stitch I use on everything. He is definitely the one who originally got me interested in this craft.

START WITH A GRAPEVINE BASE
“Many people try to use floral forms, but grapevine wreaths are versatile and make a great base that can be reused,” Norwood says. He also notes that they allow for elements of your design to be easily woven into the scheme without the aid of wire.

ADD A LAYER OF MAGNOLIA
“Magnolia is so big right now,” Norwood says of the popular evergreen leaf that has lasting power for the season. You can clip these from your yard, and they will continue to look fresh for weeks. Norwood left the stems of these leaves long to allow them to be inserted easily into the space between the grapevines. Work your way around the wreath until it looks full and evenly distributed.

Continuing with the theme of native flowers and plants, Norwood added several hydrangeas. “We used preserved green hydrangea, but you could use dried as well. To keep guests from getting too full (and fading before midnight!), Kevin suggests serving several small meals throughout the evening. “You might start with a cheese and fruit tray, move to something like the seafood grouping shown here, and then have a very light dinner.” For a round of heavy hors d’oeuvres, Kevin served roasted tomato bisque with fresh Gulf shrimp, smoked salmon on toast points, and blinis with salmon roe and crème fraîche.

To save time, Kevin embellished a store-bought cake with fresh berries and a glittering 2018 topper. of weaving itself into the home designer Jill Lawrence shares with her husband, Frank, and their two children. For starters, the house was modeled after a traditional Williamsburg, Virginia home. Second, the original owners— who were the only family to live there before the Lawrences—paid attention to detail in terms of the home’s architectural features as well as its furnishings. These characteristics— along with a “gut feeling” shared by both Jill and Frank—led the family to believe their own history could be written within the home’s walls.
Frank, who often scouted for houses while running in favorite Little Rock neighborhoods, was the one who initially spotted the home. “It went on the market in 2003, and I don’t even think it had been on the market a day before we went to look at it,” Jill says. The former owner showed the Lawrences the house herself. “She and her husband built it out of love, and they put everything they had into this house. Their good friend the late Victor Zanovich, who was a long-time designer here in Little Rock and a lovely human, did most of the design work,” Jill relates. “As the story goes, he also spent a lot of holidays in the house with them.” Whether with everyday furnishings or seasonal décor, Jill honors the history of this home and its previous owners by complementing the architecture with her own style, which she refers to as “clean-lined aesthetics.” Jill says that her number one design priority—in both clients’ homes and her own—is for the finished project to stand the test of time and still look good 10 to 15 years down the road. “We’ve tried really hard not to take the soul out of this house, but to decorate it to make it our own. Since we bought it, we have felt that we are its caretakers. We ask ourselves, ‘What do we need to do to keep it in shape and to make [the former owner] as proud as she could be?’”

MAKING AN ENTRANCE
“The banister changes every year. It’s been every incarnation you can imagine,” Jill says. This year fresh lemons and greenery mix with contemporary gold starburst accents for a look that is indicative of the designer’s timeless-meets-modern style. Across from the stairwell, a pair of Chinese Chippendale chairs flanks a Baker Sheraton-style chest. A dear friend of Jill’s, who lives in New York, drew the set of blind-contour, continuous-line subjects seen in the frames. The banister’s décor is echoed through an evergreen wreath and cut-glass bowl of lemons.

STYLE MEETS SENTIMENT
The home’s East Lake Victorian dining table originally belonged to Frank’s grandmother but came to hold special significance for Frank and Jill. “We served our wedding cake on this table,” Jill says. Originally dark wood, Jill painted the table to give it a lighter, more contemporary look. The grape harvest baskets on the wall are vintage pieces she found at Fabulous Finds, while the round mirror on the mantel was purchased through Cindy Staley’s English Antique Imports. “I’ve had it for 20 years, and it’s one of those pieces that won’t ever go out of style,” Jill says. Fresh garland—laden with lemons and yellow ribbon—adds a soft seasonality to the surround. The marble piece on the table also holds meaning. “I picked up this piece at Marshall Clements shortly after Reggie Marshall passed away. It was a sentimental moment for me, and now the statue is a great conversation piece on our table.”

The family tree also evolves each year. For this rendition, Jill and her daughter, Caroline, crafted graceful, white origami birds. “Our tree is based on the origami tree in City Hall in San Francisco. I thought it was beautiful, and we decided to do our own version,” the designer says of the tree’s inspiration. “I have an ongoing laboratory for Christmas décor. THE PLACE TO BE
The library is a popular hangout for Caroline, her brother, Jack, and their friends. “Most weekends, the sectional sofa is lined with teenagers—and you cannot hurt it. Everything in my house is either really durable or slipcovered,” Jill says. The chair’s buffalo check fabric makes an eye-catching statement, while antlers from Frank, Jack, and Jill’s father-inlaw’s hunting trips fill the walls for a personal touch.

SEASONAL SIMPLICITY
Boxwood wreaths are a subtle, recurring element of the holiday décor that is seen throughout the home. Here, they grace the neutral-hued living room, adding an elegant and understated touch. A series of antique bird prints line the walls for an effect that feels almost like a wallcovering. “I like wallpapering with a series of prints so they run the whole room,” Jill notes.

As with most houses, the Lawrences’ kitchen plays host to more than family meals. As Jill notes, she and Caroline have done “some serious cookie baking” in the space, but the countertops have also “seen their fair share of hot glue.” The spacious room was originally two areas, a galley-style kitchen and a breakfast nook. Upon moving in, the Lawrences gutted the space and combined the rooms to create this area and give the much-used kitchen an updated but still classic look.

Alicia was lucky enough to find her home in the framing stage of its construction, allowing her a say in many of the design details—including the inset cabinetry, backsplash tile, farmhouse sink, and contrasting paint colors in the kitchen. The neutral palette is consistent with the rest of the house and accented with a light layer of seasonal wreaths and Christmas dÊcor, which ties the kitchen to the living areas.

SET THE TABLE
The kitchen is also home to a breakfast nook with place settings for four around a pedestal table, which Alicia found at Somewhere In Time Antique Mall in Rogers. Like so many of Alicia’s favorite pieces, this one has a story: The owner who sold the table to Alicia told her that its lineage dates back to the home of Louise Thaden, a pioneering aviator from Bentonville. “I met the [previous owner] and she shared stories with me of her and her children sharing breakfast together when they were young,” Alicia says. Now, she carries on the table’s tradition by gathering here with her husband, Chris, and their two children, Ava, 12, and Tyler, 9. MODERN CHARM
Armchairs at either end of the table bring a cozy feel to the formal dining room. The faint blue walls hint at the vintage decor seen throughout the rest of the house, while modern wainscoting streamlines the room, giving it an air of simple elegance—a direction Alicia admits is different from her last dining room. “I used to be drawn to a French country and ornate look, and I didn’t want that anymore,” she says. “Now I look for more classic pieces. I want something I could keep for years to come that won’t seem dated.”

MAKE A STATEMENT
In addition to seeking out hidden gems at antique malls and estate sales, Alicia is an advocate for supporting small businesses. One of her favorites is Cottonwood Shanty, an Ohiobased online business, whose “Oh Holy Night” scroll hangs in a hallway across from the dining room. The antique German sled is another one of Alicia’s favorite wintry finds.
GETTING COZY
Tufted-back, upholstered chairs flank the tree and offer prime real estate come Christmas morning, while the tree’s trimmings reflect the creamy wall color, muted rug, and earthy tones of the fireplace and furniture. Holiday accent pillows on the chairs are an easy way to add simple, seasonal flair.
TICKLE THE IVORIES
In the office, a 1917 Story & Clark piano—which Alicia points out is 100 this year— serves as the display for a collection of Christmas signs, spools of twine, and mismatched decorative topiaries. “I found [the piano] on Craigslist several years ago and fell in love with the gold lettering and gorgeous wood grain,” she says. 52 At Home in Arkansas | December 2017

A small wall in the entryway serves as the home for an ever-changing gallery wall of Alicia’s collections. “For me, the biggest challenge I face in decorating is wall space,” she admits. “Oftentimes, I will use something I already have until I can find the perfect piece for that room or wall. I have learned to be patient when finding décor for large spaces.”

FUN! IT WASN’T A CHANCE MEETING that brought Kirstin and Glen Johnson together, but rather the help of two close friends—Whitney Lammers and interior designer Beth Davis. “I was a sales rep for Delta faucets at the time and had been trying to call on Beth in Searcy for a while. I was able to meet with her, and almost immediately she asked if I was single,” Whitney recalls. “After a conversation we had, I had been trying to set my friend Glen up with someone,” Beth notes. “Whitney just had such a precious demeanor about her that I knew if she wasn’t single, she must have a friend.” As luck would have it, Whitney did have a friend—Kirstin. She and Glen are now married with three children. Similarly, when the couple moved from Searcy to Little Rock, they had a little help with their home décor. The two women who were instrumental in their meeting, along with another of Kirstin’s dear friends, Katie Henry of Katie Grace Designs, helped to make their house a home. Here’s how the designing trio brought everyday style and holiday cheer to this young family’s space.

HOT SPOT
A recent addition to the home, the outdoor space is a favorite hangout for family and friends, including the Johnson girls and Whitney’s daughters (all seen above) who are frequent playmates. The area also serves as overflow for guests during holiday parties. Designed by Katie and built by Mark Caruthers, the space features an outdoor kitchen, fireplace, seating for a crowd, and a television for watching Christmas movies or Razorback football. Drapery panels, made from outdoor fabric, allow the space to be either enclosed or open to the backyard. “This is really a four-seasons space for them,” Katie notes. “It’s comfortable and so cozy.”

A set of double doors dressed for the season with a mix of faux and fresh greenery as well as pinecones, magnolia clippings, and cream and burlap ribbon, greets guests. The décor on the front columns’ lanterns also features mercury glass ornaments. “I wanted everything to flow from the front entry,” Whitney says. “The front door has a sort of rustic glam look, and I think that is indicative of the dressy décor on the interior and the more casual, natural elements I used on the back deck.”

With three children, one can imagine that the Johnsons’ living room is a bustle of activity on Christmas morning. It is decorated in the same serene hues seen throughout the interior and accented with whimsical stockings for Santa to fill. “My husband is constantly on the go, so we look forward to staying at home on Christmas morning, playing with our kids, and really soaking in that time together,” Kirstin says. Beth had the standalone cabinets (seen on either side of the fireplace) custom made for the family. A work by Little Rock artist Amanda Kella (who is Whitney’s sister) rests on the mantel.

A restful master bedroom was a must for the Johnsons. “I added softness to the space with draperies, which are a Tilton Fenwick for Duralee pattern, but didn’t go overboard on accessories,” Beth says. Whitney added a light layer of Christmas décor, including a magnolia wreath, to carry holiday cheer throughout the home.

Katie helped the couple find complementary furnishings to pair with the dining table they already owned, while Beth selected the drapery fabric and sourced artwork and accessories. “Kirstin and I originally wanted to wallpaper the entire room in this Thibaut wallpaper that I found; however, Glen thought that might be over-the-top, so we instead decided to frame a couple of pieces and hang them as art,” Beth says of the colorful installation at the far end of the room. More pieces from Kirstin’s mercury glass holiday collection add polish to the seasonal décor.
