Sun Ray Electric oil filled radiators are manufactured from individually cast Aluminium elements and filled with a very high quality Thermic Emission oil.

During manufacture the panels (elements) of the radiators are individually powdercoated with polymerised epoxy resin which ensures first class corrosion resistance and gives the overall radiator a flawless finish. The panels are then joined together to make up the radiator using a unique patented elastic silicone joint between each panel; this ensures total sealing during the life of the radiator. Residential Apartments Case Study BACKGROUND This new development of residential apartments on Gardiner Street, Dublin are in two joined buildings, one of five and the other seven storeys with communal facilities. There are also 3 new retail units on the ground floor fronting on to Gardiner Street. Onsite facilities include car parking and landscaped gardens complete with new street railings. The linked buildings of this scheme face busy city streets and are planned around a sunny internal courtyard. The apartments are devoted to homes for elderly residents, each with a living room and generous balcony, opening to the central garden.

The Building Energy Rating (BER) of the dwellings are Fr. Scully House, Dublin rated B1 – A3.

THE PROJECT The Developer of the project wanted to look at options to heat the communal areas of the building. ATC were contacted by an Electrical Wholesaler to provide their proposal for an energy efficient heating solution for this project. One of the main requirements for the development was to reduce the amount of electrical load on a previously specified heating system and to ensure that the efficiency of the development would give maximum comfort to the residents. An ATC Technical representative met with the electrical contractor on site to assess and review the project. He received the drawings and relevant information to allow him to come back with a proposal.

CONSULTANT APPROVAL The following week ATC made a presentation to the contractor outlining the proposed size and location of the Sun Ray Radiators to heat the common areas including corridors and hallways. The presentation included a detailed Energy Cost Report outlining the projected energy costs over twelve months against specific parameters. ATC was able to show that by using ATC Sun Ray Radiators that this system could provide the building occupiers a modern energy efficient electrical heating solution and also save them money over the course of the year.

This proposal had to be approved by the Consulting Engineers for the project J.V. Tierney. The proposal was submitted to them for their review and approval. We are pleased to confirm that the heating system was approved for use throughout the scheme in all the common areas.

There are 65 of the 1500W Sun Ray Plus Heaters and 11 ATC Sun Ray Plus Radiator of the 1800W Sun Ray Plus Heaters in the common areas of the development.

In addition to the Sun Ray Plus Heaters used in Father Scully House there is also 138m² of ATC Ecofloor underfloor heating mats and floor insulation used in the lift lobbies in the development.

32% Saving Using a Sun Ray Thermal Radiator The above figures are based on a 7 hour heating cycle using electricity on the night rate for the storage heater. The Thermal Radiator is used 6 hours per day, 2 in the morning and 4 in the Evening on the standard day rate. The Calculation does not take into account the additional requirement for boost heating in the evening for the storage type heaters. Heaters are sized based on standard Sun Ray sizing metrics.

Additional Savings: For the purpose of this calculation it is assumed that the Sun Ray radiator operates at full load for the entire 6 hours of operation. In practical applications the Sun Ray’s smart thermostat cycles the power to the radiator on and off to maintain the temperature in the room meaning the radiator will not use its full load power for the whole 6 hours, this will result in further saving when compared to a storage heater.

Sun Ray Venus DIGITAL COLUMN ELECTRIC RADIATOR The Venus electric oil filled radiator is digitally controlled. The radiator has 3 preset programmes integrated and one programmable option available. The shape of the Venus allows most of the heat produced to be distributed by convection. This, coupled with the large surface area, makes the Venus an impressively effective radiator.

The Venus is an electric heat transfer fluid radiator so it absorbs energy quickly and then slowly and gently disperses heat around the room. It mounts vertically so it’s ideal for areas where space is an issue. It is controlled by a Triac thermostat which is accurate to 0.5C and virtually silent during operation.

Controlling Radiant Heaters for Energy Efficiency Radiant heaters can be installed individually or in groups (zones). In order to ensure that the heaters operate energy efficiently, it is recommended that they are controlled correctly for the application they are intended for.

There are a number of control options which should be considered when designing the heating system.

Outdoor Radiant Heating Outdoor radiant heaters can be controlled individually by a suitably rated Switch, a PIR or by a Controller. If the heaters are to be zoned in groups it is advisable that they are switched by a suitably rated contactor.

• EXTLSW EXTERIOR TIME LAG 2 - 20 MINS 16 AMP. Ideal for energy saving control of external heaters and exterior lighting. The EXTLSW is also suitable for damp areas. Pressing the touch sensitive area brings the connected load on. The load is then switched off automatically after the time lag has elapsed. The time lag is adjustable from 2 to 20 minutes.

• CIRT REGULATOR / CONTROLLER. The CIRT is a variable output Regulator with timer, designed for radiant heating and is especially suited for spot and zone heating. The heat output can be regulated between 25% and 100% of the output of the heaters. A built-in timer can be set for periods from 30 minutes to four hours (30mins, 60mins, 120mins and 240mins). Maximum load is 3600watts at 230V. • 12998 PIR. The 12988 PIR detects the presence of a moving body within the pre set sensor range and starts the heater. The built-in over run timer can be adjusted between 3mins and 20mins. A suitably rated contactor is required to operate the PIR which can be obtained from any good electrical wholesaler.

CIRT Regulator / Controller

Single Phase Ecosun Radiant Heating S18 Plus & S24 Plus Ecosun radiant heaters are usually installed in groups or zones. There are a number of control options: • CIRT REGULATOR / CONTROLLER. The CIRT is a variable output Regulator with timer, designed for radiant heating and is especially suited for spot and zone heating. The heat output can be regulated between 25% and 100% of the output of the heaters. A built-in timer can be set for periods from 30 minutes to four hours (30mins, 60mins, 120mins and 240mins). Maximum load is 3600watts at 230V. • ERP REGULATOR / CONTROLLER. The ERP is a variable output Regulator that has a built – in temperature sensor to precisely control the energy use in the area to be heated. The temperature can be adjusted by the control knob on the unit. The current is electronically switched by triac without any moving parts and is therefore silent and maintenance free. Maximum load is 3600watts at 230V. The ERP can be used in conjunction with a slave unit (ERPS) to control the heating output in larger areas.

• ERPS SLAVE UNITS. The ERPS slave unit operate in conjunction with the ERP Regulator to control the heating output in larger areas. Maximum load is 3600watts at 230V. Each ERP can control one additional ERPS slave unit.

• TKS16 THERMOSTAT. The TKS16 Thermostat is an electronically controlled thermostat with an adjustable control knob.

• KUR TIME CLOCK. The KUR is a 24hour / 7 day programmable timer which will ensure that the heating system is not energised while the premises are unoccupied (at night or at weekends). It will also ensure that the heating system heats up the area prior to arrival at the premises.

Controlling Radiant Heaters for Energy Efficiency Three Phase Ecosun S36 Plus Radiant Heater Ecosun and IR three phase radiant heaters are usually installed in groups or zones. There are a number of control options: • S123 3 POSITION SWITCH. The S123 three position switch is typically used with the 3 Phase Ecosun and IR Radiant Heaters. The S123 switch will allow the end user to manually decrease or increase the heating output in steps 1/3, 2/3 and full output. Maximum load is 20A 3 Phase.

• TKS16 THERMOSTAT. The TKS16 Thermostat is an electronically controlled thermostat with an adjustable control knob. Maximum single phase load is 16A. A 3phase contactor must be used on the output of the TKS16.

• KUR TIME CLOCK. The KUR is a 24hour / 7 day programmable timer which will ensure that the heating system is not energised while the premises are unoccupied (at night or at weekends). It will also ensure that the heating system heats up the area prior to arrival at the premises. A 3phase contactor must be used on the output of the KUR.

Floor Types & Thermal Insulation TIMBER FLOORS Marine ply board must be laid over timber and chipboard floors and if possible Thermal Insulation Board (F-Board) before the heating mat is put in place. The heating mat is fixed to the F-Board and completely covered with a flexible tile adhesive before the tiles are laid.

F-BOARD, THERMAL INSULATION BOARDS

We recommend that the F-Board is installed under the Heating Mats were possible.

Advantages of using F-Board • Can significantly reduce the operating costs of electric under floor heating • Can greatly accelerate the initial heat-up so that a comfortable floor temperature is reached more quickly after switching on

CONCRETE FLOORS We suggest that a thermal insulation board (F-Board) is laid over and fitted on the concrete floor before the heating mat is put in place. This F-Board greatly reduces the heat-up time of the floor and insulates the floor from downward heat losses.

• F-Boards are made from a thermal-insulation material that can accept all water based (solvent free) flexible floor adhesives and will form a strong bond without the need for further priming.

• It is recommended to use an adhesive reinforcing tape for the spaces between the boards prior to laying the cable mat.

• Can be applied to a wide range of underlying sub floor materials such as concrete, wood-fiber boards, chipboards, plasterboards, cement-fiber boards, anhydrite materials, original tiles, fixed wooden foundation, and others.

Heating Mats The range of electric under floor heating mats should be installed by an electrician or installer who has knowledge of underfloor heating installations. The heating mats can be laid on timber or concrete floors however it is recommended that the mat is laid on insulation board such as F-Board. This will speed up heating time and also ensure that 97% of the heat output is upwards. Heating mats are primarily used for direct heat installations.

What is a Mirror Demister Mirror Demisters are a simple efficient, ultra slim heating pad that fits inconspicuously behind most bathroom mirrors - existing or newly installed. Once fitted, the mirror will never steam up in and around the area of the pad.

Easy to Fit The pad is self adhesive, fits to the back of virtually any mirror and simply wires into the bathroom light fitting, fan or separate switch if preferred. Running costs are almost insignificant.
