Rob Springer, CPRC ◆ Scouting Report

2014 Resolutions If you haven’t done so already, I encourage you to reflect back on 2013 and make an objective evaluation of the state of your organization. Determine what you want to carry forward into the New Year and what you will gladly leave behind. Then join me in resolving to make 2014 personally and professionally the best year possible for ourselves and our industry. Many business related New Year’s resolutions encourage setting goals, planning, prioritizing, delegating, following through and following up. These resolutions are about behaviors and habits and how they affect you, your employees, and productivity within your organization. Taken individually, they can make a difference in your results; collectively, they can enhance your level of business success by creating more confidence for yourself, more engaged and happier employees, and a more satisfying work-life balance. Each New Year brings hope, excitement and New Year’s Resolutions. This month’s scouting report offers you the opportunity to consider a few practical and timeless resolutions I’m planning to personally focus on in 2014 that don’t involve losing weight, giving up baseball or Dairy Queen! 1. Set Goals and Prioritize If you want your team to be more personally invested in your organization then they need to be involved in goal setting and planning. You may set the overall direction, but let them be involved in developing the outcomes that are specific, measurable, and attainable. Once goals are created, they need to be divided by priority then broken down further into more manageable monthly, weekly and daily tasks. Everyone will need to be reminded of them regularly. I’m not talking about nagging or micromanagement, but rather using your leadership skills to communicate with and motivate employees and frequently remind them of what success will look like. Involving your team members in this way encourages them to think more like business owners and facilitates greater involvement, commitment and success. 2. Focus and Delegate As leaders we often fall into the trap of believing our role requires us to be involved in every aspect of the business. Then we wonder why we’re so frazzled and tired and accomplish so little throughout the day. We would be wise to focus our time and attention on making money. This means delegating non-income producing tasks to others on your team and focusing your time on activities that have the potential to generate income and or grow your company – all the while preserving a healthy work-life balance. 3. Plan and Give Feedback Weekly Planning and feedback are vital to a healthy business. Business planning allows you to take stock of what is and

isn’t working, and helps your team set new directions and adjust goals. If you want to be a more effective coach to your team and help make improvements in their skills and results, set aside time each week to review, adjust, and look forward. Not only will this help avoid costly mistakes and keep progress on track, you’ll feel focused and less stressed. 4. Invest in Yourself and Learn at Least One New Skill If you’re smart, you’re already investing in training for your employees, so why not you too? What you choose to learn may be directly related to the industry, or completely unrelated. Learning something new will add to your skills and help in achieving a healthy work-life balance by adding a new dimension of interest to your life. Depending on how and what you choose to learn, you may meet new and interesting people who may become customers, colleagues or friends. Besides, now that you’re learning to delegate, you should have an extra hour or so to devote to making this resolution attainable. 5. Give Something Back to Your Community There are all sorts of worthy organizations that make a difference in your community. Make and keep this resolution to find a cause that matters to you, and give what you can of your time and talent. Make this the year that you serve on a committee, become a mentor, volunteer, or make donations to groups that try to make your community a better place to live and work. I encourage you to pay it forward. Nothing will seed and grow goodwill better and the benefits are priceless! 6. Be a Model Your team is constantly watching and likely following your lead. Are your behaviors the ones you want them to copy? What about you attitude, work habits, and customer relations? The attitudes and behaviors of your team are similar to looking in the mirror. It’s great if you like what you see. If not, the sad reality is that most likely, you are the source of your frustration and it’s time for you to make an adjustment! These resolutions are here to remind you that you’re not just a roofing professional thinking about customers or profit margins on a P&L. You are also a LEADER! While this list may seem a bit daunting, it’s important to remember that these resolutions don’t necessarily require any special skills – just a change in mindset and most likely a change in habits. The effort involved will be well worth it: for you, your team and ultimately your results. Now all that’s left to do is see your vision. Set your goals. Make a plan. Work that plan. Be relentless. And resolve to be an INDUSTRY ALL-STAR in 2014!

2014 Buyers Guide This issue of ROOFING FLORIDA magazine features our annual Buyers Guide, which provides listings of participating industry companies doing business in Florida. The Buyers Guide is an opportunity to shine the spotlight on FRSA associate members and, this year, we have made it even easier for you to quickly find other FRSA members to do business with. In addition to placing members names in bold (as in previous years), we have placed members in a special highlighted section at the beginning of each listing. You will find Dealers and Distributors starting on the next page, Manufacturers starting on page 17, Service Providers and Consultants starting on page 25 and Sales Representatives on page 27. Consider RFM Advertisers The Buyers Guide and every issue of ROOFING FLORIDA would not be possible without the ongoing support of our advertising companies. Company listings of businesses with an ad in this issue include a page reference to the ad. Page 29 Features a Full List of Advertisers When making decisions about whom you do business with, I encourage you to take special consideration of the companies that support the valuable information you receive from this publication every month. Government New Year’s Resolutions for 2014 Hard to believe it is 2014. Let’s see if we can come up with a few “government New Year’s resolutions” that will start the year on a positive note. First, we hope the government will resolve to wipe out unlicensed activity in the construction industry. We know that would be more resolution than reality, but every step toward it counts, so even if not possible, it is a great goal. Our second resolution for the government ties in nicely with the first one:

we hope the government will resolve to spend more time concentrating on catching contractors with no license at all than bashing licensed contractors for petty technicalities. The easiest way to accomplish that is to give government employees more points for catching the unlicensed than for hassling the licensed. Third, we hope this is the year government will figure out that when we ask for “less government” we are not asking to tear down valuable structures (like construction licenses). Instead, we would all be helped, for instance, with fewer (or at least shorter) forms and filings. Each government agency focuses only on its own forms and rules, but no one steps back and looks at the mountain of paperwork required by each individual and each business each year by government. All these resolutions have been topics for discussion for many years now. Some of these goals have not been accomplished because of the natural differences in perspective between industry and government. For example, we cannot expect a government agency to ignore its own responsibilities because that calls for licensees to file yet another form. But we can expect a government agency to be aware of what another agency requires and try to coordinate filing dates, format of information required, and much more. We can expect different government agencies to work together to stop or reduce unlicensed activity. This is not too much to ask and does not require any change in law. What it does require is work beyond the minimum to collect that paycheck. It also calls for understanding that the public (all of it) is their customer. All we really ask is for government to work smarter in 2014. That can be done, it does not have to be a resolution – it can be reality. See us at the IRE Show! Booth 842

Fall Protection: Reducing Falls During Residential Construction: Installing Standing Seam Metal Roofs The first “S” in “Developing Industry All-STARS” is for www.is.gd/osha_fall_protection_metalroof safety. In his September column, President Springer provided effective steps to implementing and maintaining a Fall Protection: Reducing Falls During Residential positive safety program for your business. He mentioned Construction: Re-Roofing www.is.gd/osha_fall_protection_reroof the following specific areas of focus: ♦♦Electrical Safety ♦♦Fall Prevention ♦♦Heat Exposure

Fall Protection: Reducing Falls During Residential Construction: Roof Sheathing Fact Sheet www.is.gd/osha_fall_protection_sheathing Continued on page 28

♦♦Ladder Safety ♦♦Tools and Equipment Safety ♦♦Vehicle Safety OSHA provides informative and simple-to-use resources for each of these areas. The rest of this article provides brief summaries of and PDF links to some of these resources that can help reduce costly accidents on the jobsite. Electrical Safety When overhead power lines are present at a work site, the OSHA “Controlling Electrical Hazards” booklet indicates: Employees unqualified to work with electricity, as well as mechanical equipment, should remain at least 10 feet away from overhead power lines. If the voltage is more than 50,000 volts, the clearance increases by 4 inches for each additional 10,000 volts. The booklet also responds to questions such as “How can you protect yourself against metal parts that become energized?” and “What special training do employees need?” The booklet is available to download at www.is.gd/osha_electrical. Fall Prevention The September issue of ROOFING FLORIDA included an article on the OSHA requirements for residential fall protection implemented in March 2013 (page 8). Refer to that article for more information on the three primary systems that OSHA recognizes: guardrails, safety nets and personal fall arrest. Additionally, OSHA provides several booklets that address fall prevention:

OSHA publishes several other fall protection resources, including a checklist and a poster that can be used to raise awareness among employees. Visit www.is.gd/osha_pubs for more information. Heat Exposure / Hot Climates The OSHA publication Heat Hazards: Working Outdoors in Warm Climates Fact Sheet not only offers precautions for working in the sun and heat but also for environmental hazards such as Lyme disease: These illnesses... are transmitted to people by bacteria from bites of infected deer (black legged) ticks. In the case of Lyme disease, most, but not all, victims will develop a “bulls-eye” rash. Other signs and symptoms may be non-specific and similar to flu-like symptoms such as fever, lymph node swelling, neck stiffness, generalized fatigue, headaches, migrating joint aches, or muscle aches. In summary, OSHA recommends the following steps to prevent nail gun injuries: ♦♦Use full sequential trigger nail guns ♦♦Provide training ♦♦Establish nail gun work procedures 28

ROOFING Florida

January 2014

Vehicle Safety In the November 2013 issue of ROOFING FLORIDA, Phillip Lane of JW Eden’s Insurance, provided practical steps to reduce employee vehicle accidents (page 16). One of the most striking items in that article is the increase in accidents that occur as the result of the use of a phone while driving, particularly texting. Lane recommends developing a program for employees using company vehicles. OSHA’s Motor Vehicle Guidelines for Employers points out that accidents, both on and off the job, are a leading cause of death and injury for all ages. Crashes on and off the job have far-reaching financial and psychological effects on employees, their co-workers and families, and their employers. and recommends employers develop a “safe driving program.” Download: www.is.gd/osha_motor_vehicle_guide Members Only: Hazmat Changes Finally, OSHA is implementing changes to its hazardous material requirements as it rolls out its “Globally Harmonized System.” FRSA members should visit the members only section (“Member Login” in the top right corner of www.floridaroof.com) for valuable information that will help your business comply with the new standards.

ROOFING FLORIDA Advertisers Make It Happen! By John Hellein, RFM Editor If you have found any value in the pages of ROOFING FLORIDA over the past 12 months, if you have learned something new about the industry, about the Florida Building Code, about your business or about your local affiliate, the credit goes to the magazine’s advertisers. Without their generous support month after month, none of the articles or features would be possible. I would like to take this opportunity to thank each of the companies that have supported ROOFING FLORIDA through ads since January 2013. Below is a list of those companies along with the page number (if applicable) for each company’s listing in this Buyers Guide issue of the magazine. One of the best ways you can show your gratitude for making this magazine possible is by returning the support with the choice of whom you do business with. Just like FRSA Associate Members, companies that advertise in ROOFING FLORIDA demonstrate their commitment to FRSA in a very real way. Thank you for your support of the companies that support ROOFING FLORIDA. Fall Protection A.C.T. Sun Star Energy LLC resubmitted a request for a declaratory statement asking if plumbing contractors could install solar systems on roofs without using a roofing contractor. FRSA members and staff pictured above (George Ebersold of Tom Tannenbaum Roofing; Mark Zehnal, CPRC, FRSA staff; Trent Cotney, PA, FRSA Legal Counsel; and FRSA Past President and former CILB member Carl Engelmeier, CPRC, of EH Engelmeier Roofing) as well as Executive Director Lisa Pate, CEM (not pictured) attended the January CILB meeting in Orlando to make the case that work requiring a roofing contractor’s license should not be performed by other contractors. The CILB agreed and answered “no” to the request.
