Industry Updates MFM Building Products Celebrates 65th Anniversary

MFM Building Products, a manufacturer of a full envelope of waterproofing and weather barrier products for the building industry, is celebrating its 65th anniversary.

MFM Building Products was founded in 1961 in Coshocton, Ohio. Initially, the company manufactured products used for wrapping underground pipes to protect from water penetration and contamination.

Over the years, MFM expanded this technology to develop sealing and waterproofing products for use in the building envelope. In July 2017, MFM became a 100 percent employee-owned (ESOP) company that still holds true to its original core values.

Today, MFM manufactures a wide array of selfadhered weather barrier products that include lowslope roofing membranes, roofing underlayments, window and door flashing tapes, multi-purpose waterproofing membranes, specialized waterproofing tapes and HVAC duct and pipe wrap. These exterior, waterproofing membranes are self-adhering and self-sealing for ease of installation and complete waterproofing protection.

MFM products are manufactured in the United States and sold through an extensive distributor network around the globe. The company’s products qualify for the Buy American Act (BAA) and Build America Buy American Act (BABAA).

Judah Lindvall Joins MuleHide as North Florida Territory Manager

Judah Lindvall has joined low-slope roofing manufacturer MuleHide as territory manager for North Florida.

Lindvall is the company’s lead contact with customers in the territory, which includes Jacksonville, Daytona Beach, Tallahassee, Pensacola and Ocala. His responsibilities include helping to ensure that projects are completed efficiently and according to specification, working with contractors and 6

Melvin Kruger Scholarship Program Accepting Applications for 2026-2027 School Year

The Roofing Alliance announces the opening of the Melvin Kruger Scholarship Program for the 20262027 academic year. The deadline for applications is January 30, 2026.

The Roofing Alliance Melvin Kruger Scholarship Program offers two scholarship opportunities. All categories are open to employees of roofing industry companies, their spouses and their dependent children, as well as construction management students enrolled in undergrad programs or students enrolled in CTE programs or schools (regardless of industry affiliation). Applicants may apply for one of the following scholarship categories: ■ The Accredited University Scholarship assists individuals seeking to further their education.

Priority will be given to individuals pursuing careers in the roofing or building construction industries (which include architecture; civil, mechanical or structural engineering; construction management or occupational health and safety).

Each scholarship award is $5,000 each and is renewable each year.

■ The Accredited CTE Scholarship assists those who are seeking a professional career inside the roofing industry such as those seeking to be roof and sheet metal installers/fabricators, crane and equipment operators, foremen and superintendents, warehouse and inventory specialists and other roofing trade specialties. Each scholarship award is $2,000 and it is not renewable but recipients may reapply each year they meet eligibility requirements.

2025-2026 Most Valuable Player (MVP) Award Finalists and Honorable Mentions Announced

The Roofing Alliance proudly announces the 2025-2026 Most Valuable Player (MVP) Awards finalists and honorable mention recipients. The winners for Outstanding Performance and Leadership, Outstanding Community Involvement and the recipient of Professional Roofing’s Best of the Best, a recognition co-sponsored by OMG Roofing Products and Professional Roofing magazine, will be announced during the NRCA Industry Awards at the IRE in January.

Communication is a central component of effective collections. Proactive updates, whether on scheduling, material delivery, inspection timelines or weather setbacks, build trust. Customers who feel informed are less likely to dispute invoices or delay payment.

Near the end of the project, give customers clear notice of upcoming billing milestones. A simple reminder that final payment will be due upon substantial completion can prevent misunderstandings and eliminate surprises.

Accurate Documentation and Supporting Materials

A strong collections process relies on complete documentation. Property Tax Relief, AI Regulation Emerge as Top Issues for '26 Legislative Sessions Chris Dawson, Attorney, GrayRobinson and FRSA Legislative Counsel Four major property tax proposals advanced through the House State Affairs Committee in early December, signaling the House’s leading approaches to statewide tax relief this session. These measures now stand as the most prominent contenders among the property tax reforms under consideration. The Senate has yet to produce any of their own recommendations.

Accrued "Save Our Homes" Property Tax Benefit for Non-School Property Tax

HB 211 (Overdorf) passed with an 18–7 vote and proposes a constitutional amendment allowing homeowners to transfer the full value of their accrued “Save Our Homes” tax benefit to a new homestead for nonschool property taxes, helping preserve lower taxable values when they relocate. The bill also requires counties and municipalities to maintain law-enforcement funding at no less than the highest amount budgeted in FY 2025–2026 or 2026–2027, preventing reductions due to shifting tax revenues. During questions, members asked how law-enforcement funding would be protected, whether an implementing bill would be required, whether voters would understand the proposal without one and what services might experience reduced funding. Representative Overdorf explained that the constitutional requirement preserves law-enforcement budgets, that additional details will come in future legislation and that any fiscal impact on local governments would be minimal. He confirmed that the measure does not apply to EMS or fire services, that “Save Our Homes” benefits split upon divorce and that first-time home buyers are not addressed. In debate, Representative Overdorf argued that homeowners should retain the value of the “Save Our Homes” benefit wherever they choose to move.

Representative Duggan clarified that qualifying policies must cover multiple perils such as wind, fire or storm; that the bill does not address insurance rate caps and that homeowners without a valid policy would not qualify. Concerns were also raised about the exclusion of seniors who cannot afford insurance and the lack of fraud-prevention language. In debate, supporters emphasized that the measure gives voters a say in addressing insurance affordability, while opponents argued that the bill disproportionately disadvantages lower-income homeowners, retirees on fixed incomes and potentially undermines services such as storm management.

Ahead of the Legislature’s AI-focused committee week, Governor Ron DeSantis is urging lawmakers to adopt comprehensive state-level regulations on artificial intelligence to safeguard Floridians. His proposed framework would target exploitative uses of AI, prohibit the use of Chinese-developed AI tools by state and local agencies, restrict attorneys from relying on AI to generate legal filings and strengthen parental rights regarding their children’s interactions with AI platforms. The proposal also includes robust data-privacy protections by requiring that all information used to train or operate AI systems remain secure and private and by prohibiting the sale or sharing of personal data.

Governor DeSantis has emphasized that AI oversight should remain a state responsibility, pushing back on recent comments from President Trump indicating the federal government may move to preempt state action. A few elements of the Governor’s proposal align with legislation already filed by Republicans Senator Jennifer Bradley and Representative Hillary Cassel (SB 202, HB 527). Their legislation would require a qualified human professional to review and approve any insurance claim denial involving AI. Representative Cassel’s bill is scheduled for its first hearing next week (committee week 6) in the House Insurance and Banking Subcommittee.

The Future of Roof Estimating: Where AI Helps and Where Human Insight Still Matters Most John Kenney, CPRC, CEO, Cotney Consulting Group Roof estimating has always been a mix of numbers, field knowledge and instincts that come only from years of real work experience. Long before software entered the picture, strong estimators built their reputations on accuracy, consistency and the ability to see the entire project before a crew set foot on the roof. That core part of the trade hasn’t changed. What is changing is the volume of information available to us and the tools we now have to manage it. Artificial intelligence is beginning to influence estimating and, whether we embrace it early or wait to see how it matures, it’s clear that AI will play an increasingly important role in how roofing contractors operate in the coming years. The real question isn’t whether AI has a place in estimating. The real question is how it fits and where the estimator’s judgment will continue to matter most.

To understand AI’s role, you must first recognize how estimating has traditionally worked. Every estimator carries a mental catalogue of past jobs. You remember how production went on the last school reroof. You know how long the detail work was dragged out on a retail strip center. You recall which crews move quickly on wide-open squares and which ones excel at complex penetrations and equipment curbs. Over time, these observations turn into patterns. You learn what slows you down, where profit tends to evaporate and what conditions require more caution. That part of the craft won’t disappear because no software model, no matter how advanced, can replace the judgment developed through years of walking roofs, managing crews and solving real problems in real time.

What AI can do is expand the number of patterns you’re able to recognize. Instead of relying on memory and scattered notes, AI can analyze years of completed work. It can review weather history, roof layout, deck conditions, tear-off challenges, crew behavior, delivery timing, staging limitations and dozens of other variables that might otherwise fade from memory once a job is closed out. It doesn’t get tired. It doesn’t forget. It doesn’t overlook small details that slowly erode productivity. Used correctly, AI becomes another set of eyes, one capable of studying the kind of job data most companies never have had time to organize.

But AI is not a magic solution and it won’t hand you perfect answers. Its value depends entirely on the quality of the information you feed it. If job costing is 12

inconsistent, production reporting is incomplete or changes in scope are never accurately captured, AI will reflect those gaps. Data discipline becomes more important when you rely on technology to support your decisions. The estimator still drives the process. If the inputs are weak, the insights will be too.

AI’s most meaningful contribution will likely be in forecasting. Estimators already predict labor requirements, production rates, risk exposure and schedule impacts. Those predictions are grounded in experience and judgment. AI strengthens those predictions by digging into your historical data and revealing patterns you might not notice on your own.

It may show that your detail crew performs differently depending on who supervises them. It may indicate that specific roof geometries consistently take longer than your team typically budgets. It may highlight how weather patterns in particular regions slow production more dramatically than expected. These insights aren’t meant to override your decision-making. They sharpen it. The estimator still chooses the number but can do so now with a clearer understanding of the risks behind it.

AI will also reshape how roofing companies plan for the long term. Leaders will begin using data trends to understand which types of work deliver the strongest margins and which ones repeatedly strain operations.

Service departments will identify the most common repair patterns in their geographic area, not just from memory but from real historical data. Project managers will see early warnings when production drifts off pace. Over time, this level of visibility will influence how company’s staff, schedule and allocate resources.

In that sense, AI becomes a spotlight, not a replacement. It illuminates what’s happening in the business, enabling leaders to make informed decisions.

Even with these advancements, AI isn’t likely to eliminate the human element of estimating. Roofing remains a complex, variable environment. Every project has its own personality. Some start slow and finish

strong. Others begin smoothly and unravel near the end. Models don’t read a roof the way an experienced estimator does. They don’t understand how a building owner negotiates. They don’t recognize the subtle cues that tell you a subcontractor may be overpromising. They can’t look at a site setup and intuitively know that material flow will slow production. They don’t feel the shift in momentum when the weather turns or manpower drops. These human observations remain central to how estimates are built and how projects succeed.

The estimators who thrive in the future will be the ones who use AI without surrendering their judgment.

They will rely on AI to analyze the data but they’ll still determine the outcome. AI may help quantify risk but it doesn’t remove it. It may help identify patterns but it doesn’t have the experience to interpret them. The estimator remains the one who sees the whole picture, weighs the unknowns and ultimately signs his name to the number.

Contractors should also view AI as a training tool.

New estimators entering the industry lack the backlog of lived experience that seasoned estimators bring. AI can help shorten that learning curve by showing them historical production data, identifying patterns of past overruns and illustrating why certain decisions lead to specific outcomes. Instead of learning exclusively through trial and error, new estimators can learn from your company’s own history. AI can highlight lessons that might otherwise take years to discover.

As AI becomes more common, contractors will face different challenges, like choosing tools that actually help. The market will be filled with software companies who claim they can transform your business. Some tools will provide real value; many will not.

Before investing, contractors should ask whether the technology improves estimating accuracy, streamlines workflow, reduces errors or strengthens project planning. Technology that complicates your process or

overwhelms your team will slow you down, not move you forward.

Five or ten years from now, AI will feel like a standard part of the estimating process, just as digital takeoffs do today. The companies that benefit most won’t be the ones with the flashiest software. They’ll be the ones who pair technology with craftsmanship.

They’ll maintain clean job records, invest in training, walk roofs, communicate with crews and make decisions grounded in real-world understanding. AI will give them clearer insight but it won’t change who’s responsible for the call; it will simply provide better information to assist in an informed decision.

The future of roof estimating belongs to the contractors who embrace AI as a tool not as a shortcut.

Companies that succeed will blend technology with judgment, pattern recognition with experience and forecasting with field reality. Estimating has always been about seeing what others miss. AI gives you an additional perspective. The insight and the responsibility remain firmly in the estimator’s hands.

2026: Familiar and Emerging Challenges Mike Silvers, CPRC, Owner, Silvers Systems Inc. and FRSA Technical Director I wrote my first column as FRSA’s Technical Director in January of 2018. It was titled " These Are Exciting Times for Our Industry." It discussed not only the damage caused by Hurricane Irma but the many challenges that awaited our industry.

Over the years we have accomplished so many important goals. Through the dedication of our volunteer members and staff, we continue to represent our trade as true industry professionals. In any given year some things remain constant:

FRSA-PAC – The Voice of Florida’s Roofing Industry in Tallahassee Mike Reed, FRSA Controller The FRSA Political Action Committee (PAC) has played an important role in the roofing industry’s political activities since it was created by a group of loyal volunteers at a 1979 FRSA committee meeting.

The Board formalized the creation of the PAC at the January 1980 Governmental “Activities” meeting.

(The committee is now known as the Governmental Affairs Committee). Bernie Parrish was hired as the Association lobbyist in 1980.

During the PAC’s early years, fundraising was the primary focus along with trying to control rising workers’ compensation insurance rates. During its first two decades, the PAC was dependent on fundraising events and individual contributions to raise money. We found it difficult to establish a war chest for campaign contributions. FRSA affiliates were viewed as an integral component of the PAC planning and funding and a contribution of $2,000 was received from the Southwest Florida Roofing Contractors Association in 1983 that jump started a campaign to raise $20,000 in support of business-friendly candidates. SWFRCA challenged other affiliates to match its donation.

From 1981 to 1983, annual meetings were held in Tallahassee with the goal of making as much personal contact with legislators as possible. These were known as “Legislative Board of Directors” meetings and were successful in bringing FRSA members and their representatives together. In 1983, a “Shrimp Boil” was held at Ausley Farm in Tallahassee with 34 of 40 senators attending, an incredible number when viewed in retrospect. In 1985, a cookout was held for House Committee chairs as part of a scheduled FRSA meeting.

The first candidate contributions were made by the PAC in 1982 and efforts were rewarded early on. Governor Bob Graham spoke at the 1982 FRSA Convention while running for re-election. Speakers at Governmental Affairs Committee meetings during the early 1980s included House Insurance Committee Chair Tom Gustafson in 1984 and Insurance Commissioner Bill Gunter in 1985. The PAC always used these events to raise funds, hosting an evening function following the day’s meetings.

FRSA's Convention was also an avenue for fundraising during the early years. In 1984, there was a “FRSA-PAC Entertainment Hour.” In 1985, an act known as “The Mayor and Buford” entertained and, in 1986, a “Jivin’ Drive-in” party was held to benefit the PAC. 40

By the early 1990s, the PAC was well established but still struggling to raise funds on a consistent basis. However, limited funding didn’t stop PAC activity. In 1992 and 1993, efforts by the PAC and other construction partners defeated a large Joint Underwriting Rep. Traci Koster Insurance Bill. At this and Rick Garrett time, the PAC was also actively involved with reform to Chapter 489 and, in 1993, became an early member of the Construction Coalition.

In 1994, asbestos removal and disposal was a hot issue and FRSA was fortunate to hire Cam Fentriss as lobbyist the same year. Cam would end up serving the Association and PAC for the next 24 years, to the great benefit of the roofing industry in Florida. The asbestos issue and subsequent disposal requirements led the PAC and the FRSA Educational and Research Foundation to create a class to comply with the new law.

In 1996, another Legislative Board of Directors meeting was held in Tallahassee including an evening legislative reception in the old state capitol Senate chambers. The formation of the Construction Industry Licensing Board (CILB) was a major topic of conversation at these meetings, with FRSA pushing for a roofing seat at the table from its inception.

PAC fundraising events continued to be held at FRSA Conventions. In 1997, a PAC “Gong Show” was held displaying the talents (or lack thereof) of several Association members. In 1998, an “Artisan Competition” was held with members creating artistic sculptures using only items found in roofing. “Roofer Man” still stands in my office and a copper suit of amour is displayed in our trophy case, both items from this competition.

In the late 1990s, a lot of work was going on behind the scenes developing the initial edition of the Florida Building Codes (FBC), with the first draft of the code published in April 1999. Lobbying efforts led to five FRSA members serving on the Roofing Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) of the Florida Building Commission during the first FBC code cycle.

In 1999, there was a milestone in PAC fundraising when the first PAC Golf Tournament was held. The

tournament was a success and became a tradition that was held every year in conjunction with the Fall FRSA Board and Committee meetings from 1999 through 2019, with the exception of the aftermath of September 11 in 2001. No event was held in 2020 due to the pandemic and in 2021, a cornhole tournament was held in lieu of golf. The tournament increased amounts available for legislative contributions but fell short of what many felt was needed to support as many candidates as desired.

In 2000, the most significant fundraising item in PAC history occurred, the conversion of the PAC into a new format recently created by the Florida Division of Elections. The creation of a Committee of Continuous Existence (CCE) allowed FRSA to designate a portion ($40) of each Association dues payment to the PAC for the first time. This immediately increased the amount available for campaign contributions to between $22,000-$26,000 annually or around $50,000 each election cycle. The increased amount allowed the PAC to participate in a more meaningful way and was also a great way to encourage all members to take part in political activities that affect their businesses.

The PAC became increasingly active beginning in 2000 and has been ever since. A larger treasury also benefited lobbying efforts, providing significantly more for campaign contributions, not only to candidates but to political parties and other political committees, both of which are not limited by election cycle limits on amounts they can receive.

Along with more contributions to candidates came a couple of policies that have served the PAC well.

First, whenever possible, it is viewed as desirable to hand-deliver checks to candidates. Members of the Governmental Affairs Committee have delivered innumerable contributions to candidates in their districts, putting a face with the message supporting the industry. Second, the amounts contributed to individual candidates are set by PAC policy, making it easier to determine the amount to give. The maximum contribution is only given to candidates who have a background in construction or are in a leadership position in the legislature. A third policy that was utilized for many years was to make contributions in the same

political party proportion as reflected in the balance of power.

In June of 2019, long-time lobbyist Cam Fentriss retired but hand-picked her replacement, Chris Dawson, GrayRobinson, whom she had worked with on various issues.

The Governmental Affairs Committee and the PAC continue to battle numerous issues, each with the FRSA membership fully informed of both the industry’s position and the stakes for roofing contractors. Information is communicated through periodic "Legislative Updates" reports, along with the occasional “Member Alerts” when an issue requires immediate attention. These typically call on members to contact their representative regarding a particular issue.

Workers’ compensation reform, lien law and notice of commencement, retainage and prompt pay, the Florida Building Code, the Florida Product Approval System, out-of-state contractor issues, roofing scope of work items, unlicensed activity (including the creation of an Unlicensed Activity Task Force), tort reform, construction defects, construction training, roof-to-wall connections and property insurance battles have all been addressed at the legislative level by the FRSA-PAC. If an issue affecting roofing contractors’ businesses arises, our Legislative Counsel, Chris Dawson, and the Governmental Affairs Committee are on it. Subcommittees are often formed to address specific issues important to contractors like the current OSHA Heat Injury and Illness Subcommittee.

Each year, a small group of members from the Governmental Affairs Committee volunteer to visit legislators at the Capitol and discuss topics of importance to the industry. These meetings and partnering with other trade associations have proven to be an effective strategy in facilitating meaningful dialogue.

It also gives us the opportunity to educate legislators and staff members on topics and bills that benefit roofing.

Outside of session, members also hand-deliver PAC donations to legislators who support our industry.

The following tips can help your organization establish a successful onboarding program for your new hires: Establish Clear Communication Clear communication is a crucial element of a successful onboarding program because new hires need to know what their employer expects of them, what their role is and how it fits into the overall goals of the organization and how their success as an employee will be measured. Onboarding should also include verbal and written communication about the company culture and its policies and procedures. Encouraging employees to ask questions and share feedback

Foster Relationships and Mentorship New hires should be introduced to their teammates early in the onboarding process because it creates a sense of belonging and helps them build relationships that are essential for collaboration and support. In addition to meeting teammates, it is extremely beneficial to pair new employees with a mentor or teammate who can help them fit into the company culture and provide guidance on their job duties. A mentor can also help new employees build relationships with their co-workers and learn about the role of other teams within the organization.

Setting Goals New employees tend to perform better when they are given specific short-term goals to meet because it gives their day structure and helps them understand expectations and how their achievements will be measured. Setting goals enhances engagement by providing employees with a sense of accomplishment, as each completed task reinforces their value and role within the company. Additionally, milestone goals allow managers to identify any challenges early and offer support as needed, which ultimately leads to higher retention and long-term success. A shocking 60 percent of employers admit that they do not create any short-term goals for new employees, which means they are missing out on an opportunity to set their new employee up for success.

Training Effective training is a critical part of employee onboarding. New employees should receive thorough training on how to accomplish their job responsibilities and learn about all relevant company products and services. Ideally, the training should be interactive and hands-on, because it allows new employees to practice the tasks and skills they will need to succeed in their new role.

Feedback and Evaluation The final step in establishing an effective onboarding process is providing constructive feedback and evaluation on clear, measurable goals so the employee knows whether they are performing tasks up to the standard expected of them. This stage should also be
