Welcome to Porsche Parade’s third issue of 2023. This issue features the new 911 S/T, marking its 60th year with a special limited edition of just 1,963 units. Under its hood lies a robust 386 kW (525 PS) engine from the 911 GT3 RS, complemented by a manual gearbox. While it’s a lightweight model, it’s loaded with power and precision, emphasizing its connection to the driver and the open road. With a weight of 1,380 kilograms, the design of the S/T draws from the classic 911 S. It’s a blend of Porsche’s racing legacy and contemporary design. President’s Report

The Club’s upcoming Annual General Meeting on 17 October will see the end of my two-year term as President, and so this will be my last President’s message. It has been an honour to be President of the Club for the last two years and I am delighted about the way in which the Club has marched forward from the dark days of the pandemic. Being President of this wonderful Club has been a deeply satisfying experience. As a Club we can be proud of many achievements, due solely to the hard work and dedication of our many volunteers and our small administrative group. We continue to be one of the most active car Clubs in the Country. The program of events we run is the envy of many other Clubs, and we have continued to broaden what we offer and to try new things. This will stand the Club in excellent shape for the future. It has been very satisfying to work with the Committees (General, Competition and Social) due to the high calibre members of the Club who contribute so much to them. If we were a small business, we could not attract or afford the quality people we have volunteering their time and in many cases doing so at their own expense, to serve our members. I want to thank each of our Directors, and Committee members and Register Captains for their support. This aspect has been a personal highlight of my Presidency. David Mallison has decided to retire from the General Committee. David joined the Committee in 2015 and served as Treasurer for six years before stepping down last year into the role of General Committee member. David brought a very strong professional approach to his roles, equivalent to the approach one might apply to a large commercial operation. He has been an outstanding Committee member and Treasurer. On behalf of the Club, I thank David for his service. Andrew Smith has decided to retire as Competition Director and is also retiring from the General Committee. The Club has fared well having key roles retire regularly and appointing suitable replacements. I am delighted to announce that Bill Toohey has agreed to replace

Andrew as Competition Director. Andrew Smith brought fresh thinking to the Competition program and introduced some very positive initiatives. The trip to The Bend Motorsport Park in South Australia was one example, as is the fact that we now seed all Competition groups on the pre-grid – an idea much appreciated by competitors. Once again, on behalf of the Club, I thank Andrew for his service. Earlier in the year I noted one of the more sombre aspects of the role as President. From time-to-time the President expresses the condolences of the Club when major life events impact our members. As I reflect this is a reminder that the Club is made up of real humans going through real life experiences. One aspect of the past years I am extremely proud of – but do not claim credit for – is the willingness of the Club to broaden what we offer and to try new things. The most recent example was the Club Breakfast with Porsches at Young Timers Garage in Keysborough. Other examples include establishing the Taycan Register, Wine Dinners, and the Women’s Run. A key feature of each is that they cater to members with different interests. I want to thank each of the Porsche Centres, Melbourne, Brighton and Doncaster and Porsche Cars Australia for the support they have given the Club during my time as President. We mutually refer to being part of the ‘Porsche family’ with a shared passion and enthusiasm.

Social Reflections T

he Social Committee has been extremely busy organising events and upon reviewing the calendar, we have run ten events for the quarter, at the date of penning social reflections for September. Our Club Night at Porsche Centre Brighton was extremely well received by our members. Chis Lennon was our guest speaker, regaling his experiences, participating in Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. The presentation was engrossing, tinged with humour and identifying well-known racing identities. Chris had everyone listening in silence, which is always the test of the members’ interest in the presentation. Chris was also very generous with his time, spending the evening talking individually to our members.

A two course dinner and drinks will be complimented by a vibrant five piece band, dancing and a professional emcee. Book early, polish the dancing shoes and join the party.

Our inaugural Women’s Run and lunch at Mount Monument Winery, was well organised by Tam Nguyen and Debrah Lane. A very special thanks to them. The Technical Night at Greg Newton was organised by Werner Engel. Greg is renowned for his impeccable 356 knowledge. He is able to review a fully restored 356 and point out all the fittings and imperfections, when compared to the original model. The attendees were in total awe of Greg’s technical knowledge, with the evening concluding after 10.30pm. Greg Burns has organised two Fine Food and Wine dinners with his usual success. The survey always tells a tale and in this case, Greg’s dinners have a good following, with feedback from attendees, always impatiently looking forward to the next one. Alison Belot was the architect of our Winter Run, with an add on overnight stay at Peppers Marysville. A great run commencing with good driving roads, made interesting by having to avoid a few pot holes. Lovely lunch followed by a leisurely afternoon for those staying overnight, followed by a very social evening over drinks and dinner. With increasing requests by our members for midweek runs. Natalie Griss and Simon Murray organised a wonderful run to Kyneton and not to be outdone Alvaro Del Gallo and Michael Bailey organised a great run with lunch to Castlemaine. Thanks to Simon, Natalie, Alvaro and Michael. Our twist on having a Club Morning at Young Timers Garage was extremely well received. We had a number of estimations put the 8

The Spring Run to Merne organised by David Turner, Alvaro Del Gallo and Michael Bailey is booked out, with the lunch at Merne, looking particularly inviting. Our Club Night plus AGM, will be held at Porsche Centre Brighton on Tuesday 17 October. The guest speaker for the evening will be Tom Barr Smith, regaling his experience of traversing the Simpson Desert in his newly acquired Dakar, to raise funds for MND research. Tom’s wife was diagnosed with MND on the same date as Neale Daniher and they work closely together in raising funds for MND research. Tom is 83 years of age and to take on the challenge of crossing the Simpson Desert is a testament to his commitment to slaying the Beast (MND). We will on the night give details to members if they wish to donate funds to the cause. The Club Annual Dinner will be held on Friday 1st December, with a wonderful night planned. Prices for event venues and catering, has absolutely skyrocketed in the last two years. We are very fortunate to have been able to find an excellent venue and catering. After some tough negotiating, we are able to price the night

From Pit Lane

Hi everyone and welcome to what is my last report as Competition Director of PCV. After three years in the role I am stepping down and handing over the reigns to Bill Toohey after the AGM in October. Please give Bill the same courtesies all of you have shown to me. It has been both a pleasure and an honour to have served the Club in this role since 2021. There were certainly some tough times, especially during the Covid lockdown period where I think I cancelled more events than I organised!!! I’d like to think that I’m leaving the club in a better position than when I started as we have implemented some innovations that have made our sprinting a little more organised and safer. The introduction of dummy gridding away from pit lane, combined with the seeding of members in timed order has helped with track positioning and proved to make our time on the track safer. We were also fortunate enough to be able to obtain the use of the Motokhana track at Deca in Shepparton after a very long absence, which I hope we can build up our numbers in the coming years. We were also able to hold our first interstate event for Championship points at The Bend MotorSport Park in South Australia in June this year, which was a huge success (in conjunction with MSCA). Planning is already underway for this event to happen again next year. I want to take this opportunity to thank all of the members of the Competition Committee for both their support and guidance, especially during the earlier months in the job. There are 3 people I must single out for special mention. Firstly, our current President Mark Horton Andrews. I appreciate your assistance since I took over the role from you, especially in the early days when I can quite honestly

say, I had no idea what I was doing, and more recently having the belief in me to pull off The Bend event where I put Club funds on the line. Secondly, I have to thank Andrew Bonwick for his in depth knowledge of how the club works, and how I have relied on his ability to put what I thought were complex problems into a quite simple process for me. And last but by no means least, I want to say a very big thank you to Richard Catchlove our Competition Secretary for his support and administrative duties, such collating all the entrants for every event and placing all the entrants into run groups for me. Not only do I appreciate his “clerical” assistance, but his friendship. Now back to the more important stuff like reporting on our most recent events!!!!!! Since the last edition of From Pit Lane the Competition area has had 4 events. Back in July we returned to Sandown “the home of horsepower” for our Winter sprint. After a cold and damp morning where a few spins were had, (club champ Dan Reynolds right in front of me between 3 and 4) there were some great times shown from our entrants. The afternoon dried out and all in all a successful event. A full report is further on in this edition. In August, the club held a “double header” weekend at Winton on Saturday the 19th and then the Motokhana at Deca Shepparton on the Sunday. Winton lived up to its reputation weather wise with showers greeting our entrants. Unfortunately this persisted during the day until late in the afternoon, when the sun finally peeked through. The “long” track was held before lunch and then after the break we switched to the short, where during the last run groups the weather improved and combined with a dry line some good times were achieved.

Great fun was had by all that attended, even though numbers were below expectations. This was the first time we’d been back at Deca in about 6 years and those who attended were buzzing with excitement. The skid pan is much bigger than at Winton and combined with an open course of witches hats allows the drivers to have a heap of fun going quite quick in second gear. Please read the full article and results further on. Deca is on the calendar again for 2024, so make sure you support the club and enter next time. Our most recent event was at Phillip Island for our September Sprint on Sunday the 10th. As usual a large field of 75 cars in competition and 12 in entrée entered for this iconic track, with a couple of interstaters from NSW and SA attending. Whilst there were a few sprinkles of rain, it was predominantly dry for most of the day and after rain on Saturday the track was washed clean and was proving to be very fast with some really good times and PB’s aplenty. Results and a comprehensive report is further on in this wonderful magazine. Remembering Jeff Thomas

O

n Tuesday 13th June Michael Chapman received a call from Jeff’s wife Lynne, letting him know that Jeff had suffered a significant stroke and that he was very Ill. Sadly the following day Lynne called again to say that Jeff had passed away. Shortly afterwards Mike communicated this very sad news to some of Jeff’s many friends and we all joined Mike in lamenting his passing. Many Club members will know Jeff from his days serving on our committee. Jeff joined the Club in 1998 and has many Club achievements to his name: 1999 Challenge – Kids with Cancer day at Calder Park 2000 – Club Member of the Year 2003 – CAMS (now Motorsport Australia) Club Accreditation 2002 – General Committee Member 2004 – Volunteer Marshalls Co-ordinator 2005/6 PCV Vice President 2007/8 PCV President

Jeff was also a member of the Porsche Parade team which won the Phillip Island 6 hr Regularity in 2007 and he raced at Bathurst and many other events. In 2010 Jeff and Michael Chapman organised the first PCV Past Presidents Regularity, which has gone on to become a regular Club event. Although owning several Porsches, Jeff was also seen racing a Falcon EA and a Datsun 260z in other events. I first met Jeff when he joined the Club; we were both new members so had something in common. Jeff was competing in his black 911 SC, PCV 911 and doing his best to challenge Mike and Garry Voges in their similar silver 911SC. The pit banter was quite amusing. In the 25 years I have known Jeff, I’ve always enjoyed his company when we met at the track, or the annual group escapes we had with a group of friends we called the Wilson Prom group. This group’s friendship has endured the test of time and we have only missed meeting up during the COVID period. Jeff was always smiling, always pleased to see you and to catch up on the news, to discuss

what cars we were driving at the time and what we had been up to recently. He made time for everyone and usually put himself at the end of the queue to allow others to go before him. I think this is exemplified by him being recognised as our Club Member of the Year after only being with the Club for 2 years, recognition that was well deserved in my view. Jeff was also a handy man to know, he knew so many people. A few years ago I was planning to move house and, in Jeff’s earshot, was complaining about disposing of a rusty, tired Mazda ute. Don’t worry about that he said, I know a bloke with a farm who could use that! A few weeks later, Jeff rolled up at my house with a car trailer and my ute problem was gone. Thanks Mate! Mike suggested that I reach out to Phil Bernadou, who was a mate of Jeff’s for over 30 years, for his recollection of Jeff. Phil recalled: I first met Jeff and his then partner Debbie at the newly formed motoring club Young Motorists RACV in 1972. The RACV formed the club to cater for young motorists under


the age of 30. Jeff and Debbie were active members and Jeff was a member of the committee along with another Geoff Thomas! This created problems with two Thomas’s with the same Christian name but different spellings. To differentiate the two, Jeff was nicknamed Burges, which came about due to Jeff’s second job at a service station. A current TV add had a service station attendant named Burges so Jeff was from then on only known as Burges. He learnt the skill of being a flag marshal at the Phillip Island race circuit and assisted with the monthly newsletter. He enjoyed motorkhana’s, hill climbs at Templestowe and sprints at circuits. He also assisted in the running of the rallies that the club conducted. Jeff was interested in rallying and joined with G. Thomas as his navigator. The only issue with this arrangement was that Burges got very car sick. Medication overcame some bouts, but the partnership was doomed to fail. Coincidentally, G. Thomas was married to Libby and, they had a son named Ben, Jeff’s first wife was Debbie, and they also had a son called Ben. It became very confusing. We kept in touch over the years and was delighted when he visited me one day in a Porsche to talk about the Porsche Club. Vale Jeff.

Sadly, Jeff’s wife Deborah passed away in 2012 after a short illness. Jeff then met Lynne, who he later married and was his constant partner and wife until his passing. Jeff enjoyed his motorsport and besides supporting PCV events, raced his 260z with former PCV member Hung Do, who has provided the following comments: I first met Jeff at a Porsche Club sprint day; our racing journey follows very similar paths. After graduating from club sprints Jeff started racing his old Porsche in the Vic State Sports Car series while I started racing in the historic group S. In 2011 Jeff kindly offered me a co-drive in his 911 in the Island Magic 1 hour sports car endurance race, in the first lap of the race some car cut in front of Jeff and the old 911 suffered steering damage, but Jeff soldiered on and we managed to finish the race in 35th position out of 55 cars started. A great effort considering all the modern Ferrari and Lamborghini that were in that race. Jeff saw me competing in the historic racing with my 1976 Carrera 3 and was encouraged to buy a group S 260z from Brian Potts in Sydney and started to compete in both historic and state series races, he was competing in 10 or more races a year. He and his 260z is an example of reliability and consistency (until recent years where he

had a lot of reliability issues). He went on to win the 2016 Group S racing Goldfield cup for class Scb (2000-2600cc) and shared the 2017 Scb class win with yours truly. His exploit in the 260z convinced me to also get myself into a group S Datto. You would often see us parked next to each other at the track flying the Datto’s flag in Group S. I will dearly miss Jeff’s company and presence at the track, Rest in peace Jeff, a gentleman racer and a most decent human. Jeff’s funeral was a wonderful celebration of his life, with family and friends retelling tales of Jeff’s exploits. Jeff’s wife Lynne and the family sent him off in style , closing the funeral with Norman Greenbaum’s Spirit in the Sky. It’s hard to imagine that Jeff is no longer with us, but we will not forget him. Our thoughts are with Lynne, his son Ben and family who will surely miss this wonderful man. To mark the special anniversary of the iconic 911 sports car, the engineers in Weissach have designed a highly purist sports car dedicated to sheer driving enjoyment: the 911 S/T. The exclusive anniversary model unites the strengths of the 911 GT3 with Touring Package and the 911 GT3 RS and delivers a unique combination of agility and driving dynamics. It combines the naturally aspirated, 386 kW (525 PS) 4.0-litre boxer engine from the 911 GT3 RS with a short-ratio manual transmission. This is complemented by a resolutely lightweight construction and a running-gear setup optimised for agility and drivability.

The 911 S/T weighs just 1,380 kilograms (DIN kerb weight, including all fluids), making it the lightest model of the 992 generation. The optional Heritage Design Package draws inspiration from the racing version of the 911 S from the late 1960s and early 1970s. The design of the anniversary model incorporated GT and motorsport expertise from Porsche. This is reflected in its particularly nimble and agile handling, which is designed for maximum driving enjoyment on winding country roads. The reduction of rotating mass both in the engine as well as the wheels and brakes ensures particularly dynamic responsiveness. The S/T responds to driver commands instantaneously. Every steering movement, every ounce of pressure on the accelerator or brake is implemented immediately and with pinpoint precision. Unlike the 911 GT3 RS, the focus of the development of the 911 S/T has been not on track use, but rather for journeys on public roads.

The name marks out the new 911 S/T as the descendant of a particularly performancefocused version of the first 911 generation. From 1969, Porsche offered a special race version of the 911 S. Internally, these vehicles were called 911 ST. Modifications to the chassis, wheels, engine and body significantly improved acceleration, braking, traction and cornering grip. Large spoilers and other aerodynamic aids were not yet used in these models. The new 911 S/T takes up the spirit of the original 911 S (ST) and transfers it to the current model generation of the Porsche 911. The anniversary model combines elements of the 911 GT3 RS with the body of the 911 GT3 with Touring Package and supplements it with lightweight components specially developed for the 911 S/T. The result is a unique driving experience within the 911 GT portfolio.


LIGHTWEIGHT CONSTRUCTION FROM THE WINGS TO THE CLUTCH Among other measures, the 911 S/T achieves its particularly agile and direct handling through consistent lightweight design. The front bonnet, roof, front wings and the doors with their striking inlets are made of lightweight carbonfibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP). The same applies to the roll cage, rear axle anti-roll bar and shear panel (stiffening element on the rear axle). Porsche also fits the anniversary model with magnesium wheels, the Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake (PCCB) system, a lithium-ion starter battery and lightweight glass, all as standard. With reduced insulation, the omission of rear-axle steering and weight savings in the powertrain, the 911 S/T achieves a DIN kerb weight of just 1,380 kg. This makes the car, optimised for a fast-road setup, a further 40 kg lighter than a manual 911 GT3 Touring.

Porsche engineers developed a new lightweight clutch exclusively for the 911 S/T. In conjunction with a single-mass flywheel, it reduces the weight of the rotating mass by 10.5 kg. This noticeably improves the responsiveness of the naturally aspirated boxer engine, which now builds revs with especially bracing speed and directness. Coupled with a six-speed manual transmission with a shorter gear ratio than on the 911 GT3, the highrevving engine in the 911 S/T delivers even more immediacy in its dynamics. It propels the 911 S/T to 100 km/h in just 3.7 seconds and it achieves a top speed of 300 km/h for the track. The exhilarating driving experience is heightened by the compelling soundscape of the standard lightweight sports exhaust system. The 911 S/T is the only 911 of the current generation to combine a doublewishbone front-axle design with a multi-link rear

axle without rear-axle steering. The dampers and control systems were tuned accordingly. The aerodynamics of the 911 S/T are also optimised for the public road rather than the racing track. The anniversary model is equipped as standard with a Gurney flap on the extending rear spoiler. Standard equipment also includes 20-inch (front) and 21-inch (rear) lightweight centre-locking magnesium wheels. Ultra-high-performance 255/35 ZR 20 tyres, meanwhile, ensure a high level of mechanical grip at the front of the car. On the rear, the 911 S/T features 315/30 ZR 21 tyres. CFRP full bucket seats come as standard. The four-wayadjustable Sports Seat Plus is available at no extra charge. The instrument cluster and the clock of the Sport Chrono package are finished in a classic green Porsche colour scheme.

HERITAGE DESIGN PACKAGE The 911 S/T is offered with an optional exclusive Heritage Design Package. The new exterior colour Shoreblue Metallic and the wheel rim colour in Ceramica are exclusively available for this particularly elegant variant. On the doors, a starting number from 0 to 99 as well as a decorative foil can be applied on request. The classic-design Porsche crest from the original 911 that adorns the front, the hub caps, the steering wheel, the headrests and the car key underscores the historic roots of the 911 S/T. The interior also features cloth seat centres in Classic Cognac with black pinstripes, which are another homage to heritage. Two-tone semi-aniline leather trim in Black/Classic Cognac leather with extensive leather surrounds, a roof lining in perforated Dinamica, and other elements from Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur round out the Package. The Porsche logo and the 911 S/T model designation on the rear of the car are in Gold.

Porsche Design is exclusively offering customers of the 911 S/T the opportunity to purchase a Chronograph 1 – 911 S/T. Featuring a titanium case, uncoated and blasted for weight-saving reasons, this exclusive timepiece goes all in on the lightweight design principle of the new purist 911 special edition. The heart of the chronograph is the Porsche Design WERK 01.240 with its COSC certification and flyback function. It is operated with a rotor in the design of the magnesium wheel of the 911 S/T. In Australia, the new Porsche 911 S/T will additionally be equipped with a tyre fit set, LED main headlights including Porsche Dynamic Light System (PDLS), automatically dimming interior and exterior mirrors with rain sensor, front-axle lift system, ParkAssist system in the rear with reversing camera and digital radio. A limited number of the new Porsche 911 S/T can now be ordered in Australia for $660,500*. The Heritage Design Package costs $36,760*. The Chronograph 1 – 911 S/T is available for $21,041. Club Morning at Young Timers Garage

W

ell oh well! Who would have thought that a Club night could be so successful!? No one really, because it was a Club MORNING! Some time ago, Clyde White, our Club Social Director, had a great idea: let’s have a Club morning rather than a Club night. Just for a change. Clyde had found a venue that seemed to meet the requirements: easy to get to, plenty of parking, a great area for serving coffee and food AND a great attraction: the facilities of Young Timers Garage in Keysborough...or YTG as it’s often better known. Add to that the enthusiasm of YTG owner, Shaun Baker, and the scene was set for something different, disastrous (?), or amazingly successful. The latter won, hands down. And so the first club morning gathering for many, many years —and possibly only the third in the history of the club— came to be on Sunday August 27th. The beauty of the easily-accessible location was that the early starters could get there early while the late-starters could have their Sunday sleep in, get there for the main event and still be home not long after noon. The weather couldn’t have been better. Not too cool, not hot: just a lovely, sunny, early spring morning. So it was with some joy that Clyde took the microphone and welcomed everyone at around 9am. The gates had opened at 8.30 but by 9 the place was 3/4 full and cars were parking out on the front lawn areas, down the full length of the forecourt —facing the amazingly huge wall mural featuring half a dozen current and past F1 champions— and well down the side drives of the overall complex. Clyde took the microphone and “welcomed our members to our Fourth Club Event for the year and our Inaugural Club Morning” before outlining the program for the day. Clyde was followed by Club President, Mark Horton Andrews, who explained that such events don’t just “happen”: first Clyde had to get the idea past the Club committee. The committee had to be

convinced that it would work, that all the ducks could be lined up and that the Club wouldn’t be faced with an embarrassing failure. Clyde convinced them… as did the venue, the YTG management, the weather and the turn-out! So what happened? Put succinctly, over 130 cars were counted as turning up, along with over 280 members. People were able to wander and look, leisurely catch up and chat and enjoy great coffee and a really enjoyable breakfast… certainly better than my usual fare. Bacon and egg rolls, sliders, croissants, fruit salad tubs, muffins and other cakes. Excellent fare! The fact that the cafe delivered an estimated 250 coffees proves that it was a Melbourne event! And the cars. Wow! The 130-odd plus, I counted were spread across most models with some amazingly new, rare and older machinery. 911s were dominant, with over 70 cars, followed by around 20 Cayman/Boxsters and a smattering of 944s, 968s, 928s and Macans. There was a gorgeous, dolled-up white 914 and a single, unique, rough-looking, outlaw, fire-breathing 356. Sadly, I couldn’t spot a Cayenne, a Panamera, a Taycan or a 924. I know they are in the Club so we must make efforts to get them along next time. Take a look at the photos here and for more, go to the Club website. Some brilliant views! I had a lot of favourite cars, especially the early 911s that looked so much like my first Porsche, a 1968 911 T, bought from Tony Jones at Hamiltons for the princely sum of $6,850 when they had a little shop in Chapel St. Someone said that there could have been $90-100 m. worth of cars there, and certainly they were worth that much in spirit. Even at a conservative estimate, I would say $20-30 m. worth, not to mention those of YTG itself. They were all so clean and sparkling… and so much more attractive than the turnout at a city dealership Club evening… where you arrive in your “daily driver” Audi, VW or even a Renault, and park meekly up some side street in the dark. Not here!!


While much of the attraction was the cars in the extensive carpark, there were more inside. Shaun Baker, owner of Young Timers Garage, explained that after more that 20 years in various roles in the luxury car industry, he wanted to do something different. He wanted more diversity, more quality, more exclusivity. So he took over four factory units and for the past two years, YTG has been changing the perceptions of what a rare car dealership is like. He has business facilities, a space for podcasts, and a bevy of race simulators while next door is the store for Preston Motors Carrera Cup cars, which was, unfortunately, closed on the day. AND Shaun has two factory units full of cars for sale, by appointment. Estimated at around $30 m. in value, the stock on the day included early and late Porsches, Jaguars, Ferraris, Mercedes and others. And sitting centre-piece in his garage for the day were Rusty French’s two wonderful 935s. Shaun said that he was delighted and honoured to have a visit from such a significant club. He has had others but this was the best. So if you have a car to sell or are looking for something special for your garage, give Shaun a call. If you missed out, tell Clyde that you loved it and that you want him to do it again. And if you were there, tell Clyde the same. I spoke to several dozen people to get their assessments of the day. “Perfect!” “Brilliant”. “Wonderful idea”. And what did they love the most? The concept; the destination: all getting together and

chatting wide and far rather than being stuck on one table; the mix and quality of the cars; the food; the club-only setting; the fact that for many, they had never seen so many Porsches together at the one time. And how did they rate it? Universally, nine out of ten. Universally. But of course, this didn’t happen all by accident. Praise must go to Clyde White for initiating the idea and seeing it through. In particular, we want to acknowledge the team at YTG: Shaun Baker, Steven Baker and Niko French. Without their willingness to have us visit, the day would not have happened. Special thanks must also go to members Neville Sampson and Ron Widdison our photographers, and Stephen Lofthouse Social Committee member, for their help on the morning for recording and making it memorable. And finally of course, thank you to all the Club members who made the effort to come along and in particular, for making their beautiful Porsches look so good for the day. Wine & Food Appreciation Dinner C

hancery Lane Bistro was the chosen venue for the July Porsche Club Wine and Food Appreciation Dinner. This beautiful historic building and moody European style fitout was a perfect setting on a chilly Melbourne night. With this our second time attending, the wine and food appreciation dinners are increasingly popular for a reason, they are a lot of fun, very relaxed, and a great opportunity to chat, meet new friends, and of course partake in some excellently prepared and presented food and wine specialties. For this dinner, Greg Burns deliberately sent the wine menu directly overseas, with nil local content involved. I found this very refreshing, (conceptually and literally!) and the Luis Bouillot ‘Perle de vigne’ Grande reserve Cremant de Bourgogne was an excellent accompaniment to the snacks making the rounds of the room as we arrived. The cream and vanilla notes in the sparkling white worked beautifully with the gougere and salted cod rillette, crumbed camembert and Blackmore Wagyu tartare with shitake crackers.

Contextually, the sparkling white also worked as we socialised before being seated, and it was great to see familiar faces as well as new ones. Once seated Greg always ensures new members are self-introduced including of course the model of Porsche driven. Three glasses were placed as Entrees were served, and 2021 Emmerich Knoll Grüner Veltliner “Loinberg” Smaragd worked its magic with the snapper with turnip and sause bois boudran. This Austrian white is exciting and spicy, and well worth your while, if like me, you need a good lesson in how a great white wine can be. The turnip puree in particular worked well with the wine, with the acidity of the white sitting beautifully with the smooth creamy turnip. The Main was a Westholme Wagyu flank served rare and sliced, pommes frites with a delicious aioli, and chicory lettuce, blue cheese and honey salad. With a marble score of 5, this gorgeous Wagyu was exquisite in texture and flavour, tender and luxurious, with a delicate level of char on the outside.

The reds for the mains were a 2021 Daniel Bouland Corcelette Vieilles Vignes Sable and a 2020 Domaine Anne Gros and Jean-Paul Tollot ‘La Cinso’ Languedoc, a bold, spicy rich fruity burgundy from central-southern France. The Sable is a classic Beaujolais and is full, concentrated with a pleasing earthy finish. For me, such forward and strong reds are a perfect match for a night such as this, with lively conversation, and some great laughs. Dessert was chocolate crémeux, salted caramel, and chocolate sorbet. Chocolate and caramel always win when paired, and this was no exception. What was an eye opener was the 2017 Navazos casa Cel Inca Pedro Ximenez, a strong, sweet and complex sherry. The PX grape varietal was a fitting end to the night, served as we were up and about, chatting and discussing the night’s food and wine journey. For anyone considering attending the wine and food nights and maybe a little on the undecided side, rest assured you will be taken in and we definitely felt a warm welcome at our first event, which made this one feel like we were old hands!

June Club Night at Porsche Centre Brighton Wednesday 14th June

H

ow do we give up a night by the fireplace, sipping on a drop of red on such a cold winters night you ask, well, we are true Porsche Nuts at heart, that’s how. We love our club, we love the brand and we stick together like family, proud and honoured to be part of it. Our June Club night was exceptional to say the least, this time at the modern facility of Porsche Centre Brighton. The surroundings make you feel at home, as though you’re sitting in your own Porsche. We were warmly greeted by our club volunteers at the door, offered an array of options to drink, and a delectable choice of grazing platters at the table, from fine cheeses, crackers, olives and more, all simply delicious. Clyde White welcomed our Club Members and offered an apology from our Club President, who was unable to attend the night as he was attending the funeral of his mother. Clyde expressed his condolences and sympathies on behalf of the Club to Mark and his family. The crowd started to slowly grow in numbers and before we knew it, the place was a full house. The food trays made an entrance, it seemed as though they were never ending, one after the other, prawns, quiches, rice paper rolls, all mouth-watering to say the least, an exceptional effort by the caterers.

Clyde introduced our special guest, all the way from Colorado USA, the author of “The Peak of Racing”, Chris Lennon. I was fortunate to engage in a decent chat with Chris, I found him to be quite a humble gentleman, typical of a Porsche Nut of course. Chris had many a story and experience to share, and I did indeed enjoy listening, especially the part about his 911s electrification. I am not shy to admit that regardless of the propulsion type, I am a speed nut and there is no denying that electric vehicles are very fast and a tonne of fun. Chris also shared his wonderful experiences and memories from the stand for all our club members to listen to and take a glimpse at what it must’ve been like to race at the famous Pikes Peak. On a less sombre note, if you weren’t aware, we unfortunately recently lost one of our club’s previous Presidents, Jeff Thomas. We all shared a minute silence in memory of Jeff, may he RIP. Life is indeed very short, do your best not to have regrets and enjoy living. Being part of the PCV family is important to many of our members, we share stories, experiences, and of course, our passion for Porsche, it keeps us alive and looking forward to the next Porsche opportunity. We mingled, we ate great food, we drank some lovely wine and we enjoyed our evening together, as part of our Porsche family. To our club committee, please keep

up your great work, it certainly doesn’t go unnoticed, and in my opinion, we are by far, one of the best automotive clubs in Australia - I do speak from experience. Clyde introduced Robert Gettereder CEO Preston Motors Group, who expressed delight with being able to host the Club at the dealership. Clyde then thanked our Chris Lennon and made a presentation to Chris on behalf of the Club, in appreciation of a most enjoyable presentation. Next time he comes with me on a run for the briefing I will ensure his hands are tied and gaffer tape is placed across his mouth! After an informative briefing at our meeting point at Greensborough Mc Donald’s we headed out. The route took us through the scenic shire of Nillumbik and through the picturesque Christmas Hills towards Yarra Glen where there was an opportunity to let the cobwebs blow away.

Some of us stopped at the Chocolaterie and enjoyed a coffee and a chocolate or three. Others carried on through to the picturesque town of Healesville to patronise one of the many wonderful cafes on offer. We then meandered up through the Black Spur. The sun rays were shining through the tall gum trees and fern trees, making for a magical sight while negotiating the windy road. We drove through the town of Narbethong and Buxton making our way to our destination Peppers at Marysville where we all enjoyed a beautiful lunch and socialising with fellow members.

23rd July 2023 Those of us that decided to stay the night at Peppers had a very relaxed afternoon, enjoying a light dinner at either the Radius Bar and Grill (at Peppers) or the popular Duck Inn. After a leisurely breakfast some members headed straight home, whilst a few heartly souls decided to go on a further drive to enjoy the beautiful scenery and stunning roads. It was a foggy start, but that soon cleared to perfect blue skies. We set out to Taggerty, then following a request picked up the very scenic Skyline Road before taking the very windy Eildon-Jamieson Road and topping up fuel at Mansfield. A late lunch was held at Marmalades in Yea, following a quick deviation through the back roads of Caveat, Highlands and Ghin Ghin. A very relaxing end to the weekend, making the most of great company, quiet roads and our stunning cars. 28

Mid Week Run to Das Kaffeehaus, Castlemaine P AYG Mid Week runs are always popular, and this run was no exception. The attendee limit was 30, probably venue limited, and booked out in less than 24 hours. This scribe missed out, but was first on the waiting list, and fortunately was included at a later date.

Meeting at BP Calder Park was at a very civilised time of 9.45am and on our arrival we saw about 15 Porsches ranging from Stewart Allan’s excellent grey 2006 Boxster, his son Douglas navigating, to Ryan Zarb’s almost brand new blue 992 GTS. There was at least one Mid 911 and various Boxsters and Caymans. After greetings and coffee, run organisers Alvaro and Maria Del Gallo and Michael Bailey gave a concise briefing, covering the requirements for a safe and successful event. Following the briefing, members wandered out to their cars, the car park filled with that characteristic Porsche open exhaust starting sound, and with the usual sound of navigators saying “No, no, we are not leading, don’t lead”. The cruise up the Calder commenced. The exit to Woodend appeared quickly and we got onto Ashbourne Road, which is the link between Woodend and Trentham, and is a fine 11 kms of smooth winding undulating road and is a pleasure to drive apart from limited passing opportunities and slow traffic, which fortunately was minimal. The morning tea venue was At Erics Coffee Shop in Trentham and in five minutes the venue morphed from a quiet coffee and cake place with about four locals in attendance to being overrun with about thirty talking laughing noisy Porsche Club members and coffee and cake being served as quickly as it could be made. With coffee and food consumed the members quickly exited and At Erics morphed back to the four now stunned locals as again those unique Porsche exhausts filled the street with noise, and then suddenly Trentham was quiet again as we headed for Coliban Road. Following Alvaro’s advice, the sharp almost obscured right turn into Coliban Road was successfully navigated by all. The roads from Trentham to Daylesford were varied and interesting and passed quickly, Daylesford appeared, and we cruised up the main street towards Hepburn Springs. The road north of Daylesford is excellent for a Club event, the only rather minor problem was a T intersection that appeared to have vanished. About half the attendees got the required right turn correct, and headed towards Guildford, the others, this scribe included, had an unscheduled tour through the beautiful surrounds of Newstead and Green Gully, not really the correct route, but the roads were great, and all roads led to Castlemaine! Lunch venue Das Kaffehaus is situated in the 1870’s Woollen Mill complex and is a Viennese coffee house serving traditional Austrian food, and well worth another visit. With lunch completed, it was time to head for home, goodbyes were exchanged. This event was excellent, with a very enjoyable drive, and a different style of venue and lunch menu. PCV AT THE BEND

F

or those not familiar ‘The Bend’ is the first new motor racing circuit built in Australia for over 50 years. Located just out of the town of Tailem Bend, approximately 100km east of Adelaide. And what a circuit it is. Not just a circuit but a complete motor racing facility with state-ofthe-art pits, control room and even a Rydges hotel built along pit straight. For the rev heads amongst us it is the challenge offered by the ’black stuff’. The Bend certainly does not disappoint, offering a variety of layouts, all with their challenges. For our event we ran Saturday and Sunday on the 4.95km International circuit. A total of 18 corners with many being high speed and never ending, it certainly took some concentration to remember where you were and where you should be on the track.

The major challenge though was how PCV organised a competition track event 650km from Melbourne. After being pondered for several years our ‘newish’ Competition Director, Andrew Smith jumped at the challenge. Realising the cost and organisational demands

would be a lot for PCV on its own, Andrew engaged with Bruce and Petrina Astbury --- from the Marque Sports Car Association (MSCA) and together they pulled off a magnificent event. The most obvious measures of this outcome were the smiles exhibited by the drivers after each session and the comraderie that was obvious in the pit lane and at the social functions each evening. Despite the 650km journey, 48 PCV members participated in the event, along with over 110 MSCA members plus a few folk from PCNSW making the long trip down – such is the draw of The Bend for the motorsport fraternity. Nervousness associated with a first outing on a new, challenging race track was clearly apparent on Saturday morning, lots of well wishes but a rather subdued atmosphere in the pits during the early stages. We were soon off to a great start, and even with a delay to clean the track, we got through 5 sessions with enough time to freshen up for our welcome dinner.

Around 190 guests shared a meal and enjoyed a detailed corner-by-corner dissection of the circuit with Dean Canto. You could have heard a pin drop when Dean was sharing his insights, with audible a-ha! moments (“so that’s where I’m meant to be!”) and many raring to put it into place the following day. Unfortunately ugly clouds rolled in on Sunday morning and the track became super slippery. The fastest overall time was set on Saturday by PCV’s Alan Rosedie Din in his 997 GT3 Cup with an awesome time of 2:00:04, followed by Daniel Reynolds with a time of 2:00:05. That is certainly close competition. Absolute congratulations and thanks to Andrew, Bruce, Petrina and all the officials from PCV and MSCA who made the trip over to support us and keep us safe. If the reactions on Sunday night were anything to go by, we will certainly be back next year.

ark clouds and rain welcomed competitors to the eighth motorsport round of 2023 at Sandown Raceway in Melbourne’s south-east. The promise of a dry afternoon tempted many to sit out the morning sessions, but experience led most to the same conclusion- a half dry track in the morning is better than the possibility of a very wet track all day long! As it turned out, those who sat aside for the morning were rewarded with fresher tyres and brakes than the rest of the field in the afternoon as the sun dried out the track and enabled some seriously quick times with very little between the top competitors in each of the major categories. The early retirement of Peter and Natalie Jordan in their 918 Cayman S due to a minor, but day-ending mechanical fault, created an opportunity for other competitors in A1 Class to claw back some points after a dominant first half of the season by Peter ‘Ice Man’ Jordan. Notably, Guy ‘Oui Oui’ Lavoipierre , ‘Bad Boy’ Bill Toohey, and Richard Catchlove enjoyed their moments in the sun after the early retirement of the dominant PJ. Danny Loypur’s 987 Cayman took first class honours in B Class followed by Andrew Lipman in second and Dennis O’Keefe in third place in his Boxster. C Class saw Mark Chrzanowski snatch the chocolates from Troy Hungerford and Cameron ‘not so’ Goodyear in his 911SC.

Stefan Wojciechowski vanquished GT class with almost 2 seconds separating him from Anthony Bulloch and Adam Stafford, though Alan Rosie Din’s 991.2 Cup was fastest overall with a blistering 1.14.69 in session 11 (albeit in Class C92). GT2 and GT3 class saw strong competition from a broad range of cars from 996 and 997 GT3s to 718 Caymans and 991 Carreras, with the 2022’s Rookie of the year James Moyle ultimately stripping both classes of their dignity with an impressive 1.19.72 in session 13. Nigel Skinner tore Modified Class 1 up securing a time of 1.19.28 in his 991 C4S ahead of Christian Fitzgerald’s spicy 718S, and Mick ‘The Prick from Elsternwick’ Herrod topped Modified Class 2 by more than 3 seconds from David James in his Carrera and Joel Kristanta in a Boxster S. Daniel Reynold’s classy first season in a cup car continued with a winning time of 1.15.02 which was only a fraction ahead of Sally Anne Hains, Andrew Smith, and Simon Zettl who all secured times in the 1.15’s. Thanks again to the management team for another fun, safe, and well managed motorsport event at Sandown. See you all at Winton

R

acing in the wet is a whole different experience for drivers. It requires a different set of skills and tactics to navigate. You need to be cautious but brave at the same time. You need to read the track conditions, adjust speed and braking points, and be patient when accelerating out of corners. Known for being a challenging track in dry conditions, Winton becomes even more difficult when the rain starts pouring down. Technical, with many tight corners, slight elevation changes, and a challenging sweeper, in wet conditions, it requires even greater skill and balance between pushing the car to its limits and maintaining control. Whilst the rain creates more unpredictable situations, it doesn’t always. It’s best to remember that the Winton circuit direction is CLOCKWISE. We won’t name names, but one PCV member (Greg Burns) did give anti-clockwise a try! As the drizzle continued throughout the day, we saw a few drivers end up off the hard stuff. Sally Anne Haines can verify that the recovery truck works very well and Dan Reynolds and his Miss Piggy could not resist a play in the mud. Albeit inconvenient for them, it’s a true test of driver bravery and determination. Short track, long track, rain hail or shine, racing at Winton is a great experience and it’s always made brighter by a night away and dinner with your fellow competitors. As always, we thank our PCV organisers, our Marshals and Officials for their tireless effort in making the day enjoyable and seamless for us.

David Turner Class: GT3 Richard Thompson (also fourth fastest of the day) edged out Jeremy Fredersdorff who took second as James Moyle came in Third. A1 All in the top 5 fastest times of the day and with not even a second between them Nick Cascone (also second fasted for the day) took out 1st, Guy Lavoipierre in second (and third fastest of the day and pretty happy he beat Peter) and Peter Jordan in Third (also Fifth fastest for the day) Modified Matt Burton came in First with Wojtek Laskowski beating his son Dan (who came 4th) and the Silver Fox himself, Michael Herrod in Third. or many years, the Club has had wonderful competition events at DECA. You’ve all forgotten what wonderful fun the skidpan was at DECA?

Well 18 Club members hadn’t. After a cold and wet day on Saturday at Winton, we arrived early to foggy DECA Drive Centre. Soon the day brightened as lovely sunny North East Victorian day can. Under the control of our genius Andrew Bonwick, he and Corrie Quinn set up the timing for 2 courses. There were duplicate tracks, so two cars, left at the drop of the flag. The first course with the appropriate name of Dolly Parton proved popular as a starter for the day. Our club champ, Daniel ‘Run Em Over’ Reynolds, blasted out from the blocks only to find the lock on a Cup Car is limited at best, so the tight course made it very hard, with no handbrake, to get around the cones. He had so much fun and in the end managed to mow down the main cone.

It was good too, Natalie Jordan, Sally Anne Hains and Phil Treloar’s daughter, Tara all competing and going hard! Natalie finished in 2nd place in the 981 Cayman S she shares with husband Peter, beating him well and truly. Tara Treloar was in Entrée and showed Dad she can drive just as well.

By this stage, most of the competitors had the idea figured out a bit better. Here quick acceleration, heavy last second braking with an ability to get around cones fast, then braking to a stop into the two garages brought the cream to the top. Stefan Wojciechowski had a quick time of 34.13. There were 7 cars all in the 34’s, just to show how much accuracy counts. Again, Alan Hines showed the best with a time of 33.737, amazing! Alan is an old hand at motorkhana’s in his new 718 Cayman GT4 RS.

The Dolly Parton finished with Adam and Kerry Hines taking the honours, 1st and 2nd place and Adam Stafford in 3rd. There was a break while the marshals set up the next course, that proved well named, Valet Parking. We are blessed with fantastic help from Club members who give up their time to help as marshals. Josef Smith, Tas Kozaris as Chief Scrutineer, Bill and Tim Helpenstein, Rowan Burnett, President Mark Horton Andrews, Tristan De Carro, Srey Sen and Cory Quinn, all of whom were vital to the event. On behalf of all competitors, we thank you.

All 18 entrants had four runs on the Dolly Parton. The results were determined by the quickest of the four. From the results, there were very quick times and really spirited and excellent car control.

Valet Parking was a sprint from the start garage, past a cone to the end of the skid pan about 80 metres, so by that time most cars are doing about 90k’s! Brake HARD, around a cone, back about half way, round another cone, making sure you don’t hit any cone, back to the next cone, around, back toward the finish with a complete stop in a ‘garage’, then an acceleration about 50 metres back to the start garage braking hard to a stop without going through or hitting a cone. Sounds easy? Come and try next year, it is a great challenge for Porsche car and driver.

After we all packed up, the local Kiwanis Club Shepparton Childrens Welfare Charity put on country town lunch for us all. Home made sandwiches, rolls cups of tea, cakes including Swiss Roll and Lemon Tarts. How spoilt we all were. We at PCV thank Kiwanis Club very much for attending and providing such a lavish lunch. Kiwanis Club Shepparton The day proved how much we have missed a PCV skid pan event where you can show your ability rather than speed, where quick reactions, and accuracy with vehicle control of your Porsche is vital. Come and try it in 2024!.

At that point Michael Coghlan in his 981 Boxster S led class A1 with a quick time of 29.65secs. It was great to see Alan and Kerry Hines back at DECA too in 718’s, Kerry in HER GT4 and Alan, HIS GT4 RS. Alan had the quickest time too with a 28.33. Technical Night held at Greg Newton Restorations

n a cold and miserable Wednesday evening, a group of around 40 people turned up in the middle of an industrial estate in downtown Laverton North. When I arrived early I was surprised by the number of fellow members who had already arrived and were eagerly awaiting access into the “cool” workshop. (Less cold than outside). Food was prepared on site by Gary and Chris from “Ostrich and the Egg” to a pre ordered menu, and even though it was a little late it was fresh and tasty. Greg Newton was an absolute revelation on the night. His knowledge of early Porsche 356s is astounding. The crowd hung off his every word with his detailed knowledge. He can restore virtually any type of old car but specialises in early Porsches, E Types, Ferraris and Volkswagens, however, his favourite restorations are the 356. His ability to tell you if a model is historically correct is humbling. His workshop is fitted out with everything from ancient metal moulding machines to the latest 3D laser measuring devices. I tried to wind down the evening at 9.30pm as I thought Greg might want to go home but without much luck. The night went on for another 1½ hours with few people leaving. Sincere thanks to Greg for allowing PCV members access into his amazing workshop.

I

t was with great excitement and anticipation that I joined my second ever Porsche Women’s Run.

Our final destination was Mount Monument Winery. We joined our fellow participants on a blustery winter’s morning in Essendon Fields. After a fortifying coffee, lots of awesome conversations about all things cars and a hearty discussion about what the collective noun of a group of Porsche lady/women enthusiasts, is we set off with a roar to our first way point to Verdue café, Romsey. The sight of all the magnificent Porches with 22 participants was wonderful to behold. In tight formation we navigated our way through undulating hills, with picturesque countryside featuring lambs gamboling, cows lowing, and historic buildings resplendent in the weak winter sunshine. With absolute synchronicity we all arrived on mass at our waypoint eager to share our experiences of the performance of our beloved Porsches. After a short break we again set off on a new adventurous route towards our final destination. What a sight

we were to behold as once again our cars were in perfect harmony as we navigated through Porsche friendly roads with the beautiful Australian countryside swooshing by until we arrived at Mount Monument Winery to enjoy a fabulous lunch and even better company with our new found friends. Ok, full disclosure, there may have been some different ladies’ experiences but mine went a bit like this… My navigator and I got stuck behind a massive truck at the first instance, missed the lights and then proceeded to the route using a dodgy phone sat nav app whilst also trying to read the run notes without glasses. We may have missed one or more turns, had simultaneous mini strokes whilst trying to work out if we had driven over the same bridge three times or three bridges once. We had a bit of a wolf creek moment with a four wheel drive whilst playing pothole dodgem in a dead end gravel road. Not to worry, we educated the driver about the evils of misogyny via hand gestures. We abandoned all hope of the mid way point, cranked up the stereo and sang very

loudly to Tina Turner and proceeded to the aptly named Mount Monument winery. We were greeted very warmly by the proprietor who had cordoned off some parking areas for us. Lucky us, we got prime position. It wasn’t very long before our fellow drivers arrived and then the fun and frivolity continued! The lunch was absolutely superb, the wine delicious and I found myself amongst the most amazing, incredible, interesting and inclusive women. I honestly haven’t had such a fabulous time in ages. I believe all experiences are learning opportunities. What did I learn? A shared interest leads to amazing discoveries about each other, we all may travel different routes, but we all end up at the same place and what it actually takes to amass a marvelous jewelry collection! I encourage all women to come along to the next women’s run. If you don’t yet have your own car, borrow someone else’s or better yet buy your own! Oh, and the collective noun for a group of women/ lady Porsche-drivers? A Goddess.

Coffee Run to Growling Frog

hree days after the winter solstice, 50 brave PCV members and their friends headed out to Essendon Fields for an early Winter Run. On a cold morning the coffee was welcomed as people gathered, and as always members said hi to each other, some having met many times before, others meeting for the first time. Kon briefed us well as he always does, welcoming new members, reminding us to represent the club well, as well as mentioning he had put in a special request to VicRoads to ensure all the potholes were addressed before our drive. We headed off just after 10am into a sunny, though cold, Sunday morning, with our first turn onto the Tullamarine Freeway. With the lights there, this immediately broke us up into more manageable groups, with anywhere

from 5-15 vehicles getting through. For some (myself specifically!) this meant you had to actually check your run notes as you were not always with someone else. As always though, the run notes were spot on. We headed north past the airport, where we then turned off into the countryside and enjoyed the roads that weaved in and around the hillsides around Clarkefield, Darraweit Gum, Romsey and Lancefield. Unfortunately VicRoads had not quite gotten around to Kon’s politely worded request in addressing the aforementioned potholes, but thankfully with the run-notes also referencing some specifically challenging potholes, no one had any issues to report. At Lancefield, we headed east and then south as we weaved through Kilmore, Wandong, and down to Woodstock where we then pulled into

the Growling Frog Golf Course. For what was originally billed as a coffee and winter run, 40 attendees were keen to stay for lunch and we certainly filled out their function room, with our tables well positioned to overlook the wonderful fairways at the Golf Course. We had a few people who joined us directly for lunch, and we were well served by the staff at the Growling Frog, with a good selection of food and drinks catering to people’s tastes. There was plenty of friendly conversation going on amongst the tables between old friends and new, and before we knew it, another 2 hours had flown by, and people reluctantly started to head off. Congratulations again to Kon on yet another well run day with a great run, great weather, great food and of top notch members who made it all the better. Mid Week Run to Kyneton Wednesday 2nd August 2023 Story by Maria Del Gallo Photos by Simon Murray

W

e met at the BP Service Centre in Rockbank for the start of a long-awaited midweek run. It was great to get out on a Wednesday for a change as it has been a while since the last midweek run. Thanks to Natalie Griss and Simon Murray for organising. We had 15 cars which comprised of 18 people including our newest members, Wayne and Diane and Gary Fyfe. Also joining us was Kon Gogos in his beautiful recent acquisition, a Carmine Red 911 992 GTS. We headed off after an informative briefing, (watch out for the road works and pot holes!) travelling through Blackwood and Trentham on some familiar Porsche friendly roads. After arriving at our morning tea stop at the Glenlyon General Store, some of us tried the ‘best’ hot chocolate which Natalie suggested, sitting inside by the fire. Others had their morning tea outside discussing what they were driving and taking photos.

It was on to the lunch stop, Monsieur Pierre Bakery in Kyneton. We headed back through Daylesford and Trentham again taking in the beautiful scenery. After arriving we all sat outside in the sunshine, although it was cool, Monsieur Pierre Bakery had a variety of delicious food to choose from. I think most people went for the home-made pie with chunky pieces of beef, but they catered for all tastes. I was happy to volunteer to write this runs story, but I must thank Natalie for the ‘incentive’ bottle of wine I received which was from Kyneton Winery. Thanks again to Natalie and Simon, and all the other attendees for another great run.

Cayenne & Macan Register Run to Healesville

W

ith both co-captains (Jake Parsons and Reza Mohammed) of the Cayenne/ Macan register present this is was always going to be a good day. Reza was managing this event, made easier by all the participants having been on runs before and some even familiar with the roads we were due to travel on. Some of the cars had already done almost a register run just to get there coming from places like Torquay and Mount Martha. It was a Goldilocks sized group, not to too big but also not too small, at around 20 cars. There was a 997 Coupe and an eclectic group of Macans and Cayennes. It was interesting to note there was a high proportion of GTS’s which added to the aural experience with their well-tuned exhausts on start-up (and in sports mode during the run). The safety briefing was concise but we felt safe on the road with some of the unique colours in the pack including an orange (papaya) and a light blue (miami) to balance the blacks, night blue, silver, and the agate grey of the group. Other drivers could not miss us on the road. We met at Bundoora and after a coffee headed north-east and eventually cleared the city traffic at South Morang and on to Hurstbridge. It is about here that my navigator and I made an error resulting in us being a good 10 minutes behind the pack which experienced run

Door prize for Giovanni by Reza participants know is the ideal excuse to go just a little bit quicker in the twisty parts (always maintaining the speed limit of course!) to catch up. We caught the group around Whittlesea and the slightly misty conditions started to change into glimpses of bright sunshine. The light traffic and a number of very courteous drivers pulling over to let the conga line of Porsches meant an early arrival at our midway group point at Kinglake. It was amazing to see how well the area has recovered since the 2009 Black Saturday bushfires. The stop enabled us to have a comfort break but also to chat through our Porsche experiences and learn more about each other's cars. If we thought the run so far had been great we quickly realised, as we headed to Healesville and our lunch spot, the best was yet to come. As we traversed the Kinglake to Glenburn Road, the tall trees appeared together with some potholes, fallen branches, ducks and even a football at one point, providing an opportunity to practice our slalom manoeuvres. Any road to Healesville is good value but the Myers Creek Road has to be the top of the list for enjoyment. The traffic remained light and the drivers willing to show how the Macans and Cayennes, although heavier than a 911, were more than capable of handling the damp conditions.

Everyone drove within the comfort levels, some moving over to let the faster drivers through with almost all of us arriving at the Boat O’Craigo winery on the eastern side of Healesville a little earlier than scheduled. That gave us plenty of time to enjoy the view, positioning the cars and the participants for group shots, and even more chatting about what a great day it had been. If the run so far and been good value, the return on investment jumped another level once we saw what was waiting for us in terms of lunch, wines, and the stunning views at Boat O’Craigo. Lunch was a cold meat platter, pizza and salad and the food quality was right up there. We had a room just for us and the service quality matched the food. Lunch over, more of the shared Porsche experiences and a glass of wine made it enjoyable for everybody. The door prize, donated by our hosts, Boat O’Craigo, was won by our 997 driver Giovanni. The live music was drowned out by our constant chatter. Another return on investment impact was when everyone was given a Porsche cap and an international power adapter for each couple, how could they do all this for $50 per head including lunch! I

t can be a challenging time of year in terms of getting ideal driving conditions. Given the likelihood of a cold wet day, the run had been designed to avoid the higher regions (due to some areas still receiving snow) and take in the beautiful roads and scenery the Gippsland region has to offer. Despite the weather we had been experiencing for the few weeks prior, the weather gods were surprisingly kind providing some early morning fog and no rain on the forecast. Following the success of the first run, it was elected to again make it an early start. Emerald Village Bakery was the initial meeting point and didn’t disappoint. Once everyone was gathered and after an intro and briefing, we all set off on schedule at 7:30 and headed for Gembrook on a route not too dissimilar to the run earlier in the year. This took us out to Gembrook-Launching Place Road (one of my favourites) and out towards Yarra Junction. From Yarra Junction we then headed southeast towards Noojee and for the most part had a clear run through the lovely C425 all the way to Mt Baw Baw Tourist Road. A left turn had us arriving into Noojee for a re-group, toilet break, taking in the fresh mountain air and a stretch for those inclined. From Noojee we continued southeast towards Mt Baw Baw, then taking a left turn into Willow Grove Road. I’d love to do a full run up to the Mt Baw Baw summit for another time, unfortunately, August just wasn’t ideal as that road whilst amazing, is challenging even in perfect conditions. Willow Grove Road didn’t disappoint though – by that stage the sun was out and the roads were dry. Blue Rock Lake was the next meeting point where we did a final re-group and thanks to Lachlan, Adam & Lewis (legends), captured some great photos and video of the cars all parked up along the foreshore. From Blue Rock, Mark took us on a great ‘B-road’ loop through the countryside via Shady Creek, up towards Neerim and back through Old Sale Road to our final destination of Trafalgar. I had us all booked in for lunch at the lovely Criterion Hotel and by that stage it seemed everyone was thirsty and hungry for a good pub feed. The food and service were great and Sunday country pub vibes were flowing. It was a fitting end to a lovely scenic rural drive. The weather, roads and cars all made for another magic run and I’m thrilled that we were able to make it happen. Mid 911 Register Run to Innocent Bystander, Healesville

A

great day out for the Mid 911 Register Run, with a waiting list kicking in at 15 cars these small and intimate events are a great day out.

The group of 30 enthusiasts met at 9.00 at the cute café ‘Lady Savin’ at Whittlesea, which was a great back drop for our morning coffee, with lots of tables and chairs to chat with friends old and new. Paul & Karen were very excited to brief us all, making mention that their weather request had been answered, and we were all blessed with an amazing day. We left at 10am to head in the direction of our destination of Healesville. The day started on the Whittlesea – Yea Road, double lanes and magnificent country view each side. It wasn’t long before the cars migrated to a single lane of gentle winding forest roads accompanied by our large native trees encompassing the route with glorious sunshine filtering through onto the fast and dry tarmac. These roads were amazing and new to most of us, so thoroughly enjoyable.

We then made our way down Break Oak Road towards the Melba Highway, this was an amazing back road, however I am sure that the made to order weather from Paul & Karen made it even better. Once on West Bridge Road it twisted and turned onto more back roads. The linking from one fantastic drive section to the next was mind blowing. There were not a lot of cars around which added to the driving experience. We felt like we were on the Black Spur without the tourists. One word – BLISS! Once on the Healesville Kinglake Road, we has sections of tall gums, ferns, twisting roads and before we knew it we were at Innocent Bystander our lunch destination. Two large tables, lots of laughs and chatter and an overall great vibe. The first course was an amazing antipasto platter, a great variety of tasty treats. After entrée Paul was up to draw the door prizes, they had 7 bottles to give away in total, we won the first bottle for writing the article (whoo hoo) we then pulled out a name. With

perfectly written post it notes, we pulled out ‘Steven with a P’ well obviously there was some confusion as Steven without a P came up to get his bottle to be ‘ousted’ by Stephen with a P who proudly took his bottle and quietly thanked his mum for his name spelling, the other winners were David Barrett, Jim Adamson, Ari, Slyvia Rogers and Dennis Bath. With the raffle over it was time for so much more tasty food, pizzas, chips and salad. Well, we were all full and could not eat another thing, UNTIL out came the desserts! Ice cream mini cones with a difference, Lemon Meringue, Chocolate Crackles & Macaroon, if that wasn’t enough, they brought out Churros & Hot Chocolate Sauce. espite the best efforts of the BOM to scare everyone away, Melbourne bought out the perfect weather for the Turbo Register’s run to the Brandy Creek Estate winery on Sunday 18th June.

The first section of approximately 45 minutes took us down the east coast of Western Port Bay, through Caldermeade, Lang Lang and Nyora until we arrived at the morning tea stop at Loch. A great mix of highway and country roads with a sleepy town and more coffee (and cakes) at the end, what could be nicer. After a decent interlude we headed off again, heading first further south to Jumbunna, before reversing our direction and going north on some great winding roads through Korumburra, Strzelecki and Warrigal, before the final short stint to the Brandy Creek Estate.

As anyone who’s owned a turbocharged Porsche will tell you, there is nothing better than a cold crisp morning to increase the air density and enhance the thrill of the turbo rush, especially in older cars with sometimes less than optimal intercoolers. Our group of 20+ cars met up at Old Jetty Cafe & Tearooms in Tooradin, with a good spread of turbo and non-turbo cars to waken the sleepy town. After recharging with coffee we settled into the obligatory briefing from Paul who did an excellent job in his first stint as the register captain, ably assisted by Deborah. Their selection of enjoyable roads, which were mostly free of slow traffic and Victorian potholes, made for an enjoyable morning drive. There were many spirited sections of undulating and sweeping bends, with the odd hairy hair pin bend thrown in for those brave enough to try their skills on the dampish tarmac.

Once there we were treated to an excellent selection shared plate service, which didn’t leave anyone hungry. Of course there was also a good range of wines and beers available to sip while admiring the rolling hills outside the windows of the wineries restaurant. An enjoyable place to go if you’re looking for an excuse to drive into the country on a weekend. My personal enjoyment of the day was following Tony Stephens gorgeous black 993 Turbo through the twisty sections for a few kilometres, which our 930 was not brave enough to keep up with (or the driver...). Great to see

Credit again must be given to Paul and Deborah for driving the route several times before the event and creating the Google maps links which make navigating so much more enjoyable on these types of events, especially for those driving solo or with a navigation challenged partner. Congratulations to Debra Engel for winning the raffle prize kindly donated by Bowden’s Own. Werner was very impressed she now has no excuse for not cleaning their lovely black 997 turbo cab! Our new member Bernie drew Debra’s name out of the jar so we will blame him! A second Bowden’s Own prize was won by Owen Baker (myself!!) in a short “closest to the pin” competition in guessing the kms on Paul & Debs 996 turbo. A great fun day overall. ISSUE 3, 2023

Modern 911 Register Run to the Plough Hotel in Myrniong

O

n a brisk morning, the air crisp and inviting, a group of enthusiastic Porsche Club Victoria (PCV) members gathered with one shared purpose—to embark on a thrilling journey with their beloved Porsches.

Ram. The anticipation in the air was palpable as Kon briefed the participants, outlining the route and highlighting the key points of the drive. The members, eager to give their cherished automobiles a chance to stretch their legs, eagerly absorbed every detail.

This well-organized event, curated by the capable hands of Kon, promised not just a road trip, but an unforgettable experience for all participants. With the promise of scenic beauty, forging new friendships and the thrill of the open road, the PCV members were ready to rev up their engines and hit the road.

Diversity in Motion, as the convoy wound its way through the picturesque landscapes, the group naturally divided into smaller clusters of cars. The high-performance GTSs, GT2s, GT3s, GT4s, and the RS models led the charge, accelerating ahead in a spectacle of power and precision. Behind them, a handful of other vehicles managed to keep up, forming a vibrant ensemble of speed and style. The rest of the participants formed smaller groups, navigating the road at their own pace, occasionally slowed down by the quirks of traffic.

As the sun cast its early light, on a cloudy morning, the convoy of Porsches from classics to modern to future classics, set off on a journey that would be remembered. A two-hour drive lay ahead, divided into two segments, with a refreshing coffee break at the Rustic

The Scenic Splendour, the drive itself was

a visual feast. Spring had just sprung, and the fields were awash with vibrant blooms, a colourful tapestry that stretched as far as the eye could see. Adding a touch of modernity to the serene landscape, majestic wind turbines stood tall against the sky, a harmonious blend of technology and nature. While some stretches of the road were less than pristine, offering a hint of challenge to the journey, it only added to the overall thrill of the drive. Navigational Ease, Kon's meticulous planning was evident not only in the scenic route but also in the well-prepared run sheets and the detailed Google maps provided to the participants. Navigating the path was a breeze, eliminating any potential confusion and allowing the drivers to fully enjoy the experience. The joy of the journey was enhanced by the peace of mind, knowing that the road ahead was clearly charted.

The group's curiosity led them to the restroom facilities, only to discover much later, after using the facilities with no idea that they were not yet operational. A comedic scenario unfolded as a dozen members unwittingly used the non-functioning toilets. The owner's gracious redirection led the latecomers to the functional facilities, resulting in laughter and embarrassment to some. The incident became a light-hearted anecdote that the participants would fondly recall. Caffeine-Fuelled Bonding, the coffee break not only provided the opportunity to relieve any caffeine cravings but also served as a platform for members to exchange ideas, share experiences, and proudly display

the modifications and additions they had made to their Porsches. The car park, resplendent with a multitude of elegant German automobiles, painted a vibrant picture of shared passion and individuality.

The quaint pub welcomed the hungry travellers with open arms, offering a menu of delectable meals that were not just delicious but also freshly prepared. The impeccable service added a touch of luxury to the already memorable day.

As the sun began its descent, casting a warm glow over the day's memories, the participants reflected on the extraordinary journey they had undertaken. Kon's impeccable planning had transformed a chilly morning into a heartwarming adventure, rich with scenic beauty, and the exhilaration of the open road. The event encapsulated the essence of the Porsche Club Victoria—a community united by their love for exquisite automobiles and the shared experiences that make life's journeys all the more memorable.

Boxster & Cayman Register Run to Hepburn Springs

T

he day started with a very civilized 10am meet up at the Big Apple Café, which included coffee and a fine selection of cakes. A very pleasant time was spent catching up with friends. There was also happy news of an engagement between the driver and navigator of a certain white 718 Cayman, proving that drivers and navigators really can get on with each other. As the weather began to brighten, the briefing was held outside by a feature fire pit and included copious warnings about extra excitement provided by the government in the form of potholes, thankfully included in the notes. The group was then ready for the run to Hepburn. Unusually, this run consisted of a fine collection of Boxsters and Caymans only, with no interlopers, sorry, valued guests from other registers.

We set off with some brave Boxster drivers opting for the top-down experience as the sun had peaked through. While there was quite a lot of traffic causing the group to split up quickly, the roads were twisty and very mid-engine compatible. The scenery with the changeable weather was spectacular, with brooding clouds and bursts of sunshine adding to the atmosphere, and Hanging Rock looked stunning. Fortunately, there was only a little light rain, so the run was good for winter conditions. The run notes were accurate, but didn’t include the two ducks we encountered, walking in the middle of the road at about 44.8 km. To our knowledge, only one car unfortunately missed a turn and got horribly lost. Even more unfortunately it was us. This embarrassingly meant that the writer of the club magazine article and the photographer were both somewhat late to arrive at Rubens

restaurant at Hepburn. All was not lost, as the rest of the group had obviously gotten over their intense disappointment at our late arrival and were enjoying drinks and a chat, prior to the arrival of the food. The food arrived and everyone enjoyed their various choices, while the conversations continued. The raffle was held between mains and sweets, and the lucky winners including Natalie Griss, Wayne Hansen, Phil Jaquillard, and Paul Sbrissa were greeted with loud applause, that is, apart from Stephen Lofthouse who received angry calls of ‘fix’ and ‘cheat’ as he collected yet another bottle to add to his already overflowing Porche Club provided wine cellar. Finally, congratulations to Helen Zlotkowski and Rohan Connolly on their recent engagement, and many thanks to the organisers Mark and Sylvia Behan for a fun day out!
