Hi all and welcome to a brand new year. I hope you are sticking to your New Year resolutions which should include, “Spending more time with family, taking something positive out of every day, clocking up more kilometres in your Porsche and rocking the current trending hairstyle (seriously!!)”.

As further evidence of the strong social base of this fine club, just turn to the pages of this magazine to find coverage of last years Black Tie Dinner, Show and Shine and Christmas Picnic. The Black Tie Dinner is an institution of this club and is a great excuse to glam up and dine in style in a very welcoming atmosphere. I am a simple country boy (as I’m sure many of you have discovered by now) but have always been totally at ease and had a great time at this annual event. If you haven’t been before, put it on your calendar for this year. You won’t be sorry. The Show and Shine was a spectacle and a real sight to see. We had over 100 cars on show as well as some amazing vehicles provided by The Porsche Centre Adelaide and Ross Almond (Copyworld), who are always such huge supporters of our club. Thank you so much guys. Thank you also to the many club members who braved the very average weather conditions and brought themselves, and their beautiful cars to the event. The sight of all those cars, the colour, variety and the presentation was exceptional.

An interesting thing has happened to Porsche, and by default to our club also, over the past decade. The Porsche range has expanded considerably in this time, now producing a more diverse range of cars than ever before, and where in years past the 911 was the staple diet of many of our members, today this is not the case. While secretly I like to believe that most Porsche owners who don’t have a 911 would still love to see one lurking in the garage, I totally get why they might choose a Macan, Cayenne, Panamera or 718 instead. The Macan is a great entry level car and a very practical daily drive. The Cayenne and Panamera give you all the Porsche benefits of style, performance and quality, while still catering for those with a growing family, or waistline. While the 718 derivatives offer 90% of the 911 experience at a more attainable price point. Because of this change in buying behaviour we, and other states, are seeing reduced attendance numbers at our speed events. Sure, you can run a Cayenne at Mallala, and several people have done so to great effect, but for most this is not why they purchased this type of vehicle. On top of this, those with older 911’s are becoming less inclined to put them on the track, especially since values have skyrocketed in recent years. Thus we are by default seeing a steady increase in numbers attending our Club Runs and club dinners instead, to the extent that often they are booked out. And what a great sight it is to see such a diverse range of Germany’s finest cruising through the beautiful Adelaide hills, or to see tables full of Porsche enthusiasts sharing a meal and conversation at a local pub or restaurant. So rest assured, your committee has noticed this shift within the club and while still fully committed to offering a vibrant competitive arena for those who wish to drive their cars as nature (or Porsche) intended, there is an ongoing focus to support, and continue to grow the social side of our club also. Something for everyone, that’s our motto (actually it’s not, but maybe it should be).

Finally we rounded out the year with the ever popular Family Christmas Picnic. What a fabulous family event, with great food, friendship and even a present laden Father Christmas in evidence. If you have a young family and have not been to our Christmas Picnic before, put it in your calendar now. You, and the kids, will love it. On top of all that we have coverage from the Adelaide Motorsport Festival, our own and other competitive events and much more, including a very special story, all the way from Moscow. We have two fantastic new advertisers this issue. Tim and Katerina (formally of Splash Car Wash) have set up a new business called “Wingaurd” where they continue to provide exceptionally high quality protective wraps for your vehicle. Make sure you mention you are from the Porsche Club when you see them and they will ensure you get the best possible price and service. We are also thrilled to have David Light from Richmonds gracing our pages this issue. Richmonds services include buying, selling, consignment and storage of classic and sports cars. I have been to Richmonds recently and could barely drag myself away. The vehicles on display were of the highest order and the showroom superb. Get in there, your eyes will thank you. Writer and fellow Club member, Richard Holdsworth, has written an article on last year’s Adelaide Motorsport Festival, and backed it with pictures from Bob Taylor, it is being run in the May issue of GT Porsche magazine in the UK. Keep your eyes open for this issue when it hits Aus. Should be a good read.

I don’t know about you, but 2017 arrived pretty quick for me. It might just be my age or how busy we get in our later lives, but it seems we need to pack in as much as we can these days to make sure we don’t miss anything. We have now published our Social and Motorsport Calendars for 2017 on the Website and the committee is already working on attaching venues and detail to the Social activities. Our first Sprint on Feb 5 sees the introduction of a new class for Race prepared cars such as Cup cars and also different makes. This will follow throughout the rest of the year, so if you want to come up to Mallala and see some purpose built race cars compete with our Supersprint regulars, then think about making a day of it. The next Sprint event is in May, so plenty of time to plan for this. Of course if you wish to bring your Racecar out for some testing, these events are the perfect place. Club members will also be competing at the Motorkhana in March and Hill climb in April, so we will continue to have a good spread of events throughout the year. James has already planned for a breakfast club run in February and our Twilight run and dinner in March will be a little different to previous dinners – Watch for this!!

Shine. Ross is a long time member and generous supporter of our Club. I would encourage club members to make suggestions about our operations. If you know of venues that could provide great Social events or have any ideas on what we can do better, please let us know. Finally, we are a busy committee, and we run pretty lean, so if any members would like to help out through the year or become a part of the committee then please give me a call. I would love to talk to you. Currently our Webmaster, Adam Trimmer is standing aside and we are looking to fill the role. Adam has done a great job of continuing to evolve our site and also develop Facebook, which is growing every day with new followers. On behalf of our committee, I thank him very much for his contribution.

The last quarter of 2016 was very busy and there are articles in this magazine about our well supported Show and Shine, Christmas Picnic and Black Tie Dinner events. Porsche 911 GTS

Porsche is expanding the 911 product line with the GTS models. A total of five variants will be available, the 911 Carrera GTS with rear-wheel drive, the 911 Carrera 4 GTS with all-wheel drive – both of the above available as a Coupé and a Cabriolet – and the 911 Targa 4 GTS with all-wheel drive. A newly developed turbocharger for the 3.0-litre six-cylinder flat engine increases power to 331 kW. The engine delivers 22 kW more than the 911 Carrera S and 15 kW more than the corresponding GTS prior model with a naturally aspirated engine. All variants are available with a manual sevengear transmission or optional Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK). Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) is included as standard on all GTS models. The GTS Coupés feature the PASM sports chassis, which lowers the body by ten millimetres. The fastest sprinter in the family is the 911 Carrera 4 GTS Coupé: With Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) and the Sport Chrono Package as standard, it races from zero to 100 km/h in 3.6 seconds. All GTS models feature a top speed in excess of 300 km/h. The 12

frontrunner at 312 km/h is the Coupé with manual transmission and rear-wheel drive. The GTS models stand out within the 911 model line not only in terms of technology, but also in their visual design: All of the vehicles are based on the wide all-wheeldrive chassis, which measures 1852 mm even on the rear-wheel-drive models. A low front spoiler and increased rear spoiler extension height further reduce the lift forces on the front and rear axle compared to the Carrera S models. On the rear, the GTS is unmistakeable: smoked tail lights, silk-gloss black air intake grille and central black twin tailpipes of the sports exhaust system, which is included as standard. A new black trim strip between the tail lights characterises the rear-wheel-drive models. The light strip is reserved for the all-wheel-drive models. Sport Design exterior mirrors, 20-inch wheels with central locking device painted in silk-gloss black, plus GTS logos on the doors complete the side view. The characteristic Targa bar, which is supplied in black for the first time on the GTS, also lends the 911 Targa a particularly distinctive look.

GTS genes also shape the interior. The stopwatch of the Sport Chrono Package is integrated as a central component of the dashboard. GTS passengers sit on Alcantara seats with a new stitching pattern. The Sports seats Plus with GTS logos on the headrests can be adjusted in 4-ways electrically and provide increased lateral support and comfort. Other features include brushed, black anodised aluminium trim strips on the instrument cluster as well as a high proportion of Alcantara, which can be found on the steering wheel rim, centre console and armrests, for example. First deliveries are expected during the second quarter this year. 930 in a Dinner Suit 11th November 2016

The Porsche Club’s annual Black Tie event was held Friday, November 11th, 2016 and per usual was well attended by our members. The theme for the evening was the 40th anniversary of the launch of 930 Turbo. Well we thought that the 930 were launched in 1976, however it was later discovered that a few of the first 930’s were actually produced as early as 1974! Any way the celebrations continued in spite of this small hitch. The event was held again in the ballroom of the Junction Hotel and the club were very fortunate to have on display a beautiful Guards Red 930 in the ballroom. The lucky owners of the much-loved 930 were Joe and Marisa Caltabiano. I would like to thank them very much, for bringing

their car out, on what was promising to be a severe storm event. Fortunately they managed to miss the worst of the storm on their drive to and from the event. As part of our President’s (Geoff Crowe) speech, he made a point of thanking our valued sponsors, First cab off the rank was Marc Cheney and the Adelaide Porsche Centre for providing a beautiful Porsche Turbo watch as first prize. Marc also provided a couple of Porsche caps. Jim Peirson provided two Almond Co. gift packs and these were scored by our second to fifth prize winners. Mike Rogers from Cutler Brands also generously supplied each guest with a quality Porsche Club SA tumbler glass to take home with them at the end of the night.

During the evening the Maple String Quartet did a great job of entertaining us. Not to be let off the hook, I also gave a presentation on the history of the 930 Turbo followed by the owner Joe who spoke about why it had to be the 930 Turbo for him, and the history of his car and his time with it. I would like to make special mention of Joy O’Connor for helping with the decorations and Maria Obst for helping both before and on the evening. The night was enjoyed by all in attendance and I am already looking forward to the 2017 Black Tie event.

Tim and Dainis Share a Classic Victory 17th-19th November 2016

Having won Thoroughbred Trophy at the 2015 Classic Adelaide Rally in what was our first Tarmac Rally, the 2016 event was going to be a truer test of our (somewhat limited) capabilities, and I must say that there was quite a bit of apprehension going into the event for both myself and my co-driver Dainis Silins. Leading up to the event, Dainis and I had tried to schedule a ‘recce’ routine that would give us a good grounding of this year’s stages, however, time issues meant that plans didn’t quite pan out, and our stage times on Gorge Road and Castambul would soon prove that. Nevertheless, 2016 kicked off in style with a prologue stage on the Thursday night to sort the running order with a flying lap of the shortened Grand Prix circuit at Victoria Park. Friday kicked off in earnest with morning runs through the tight and twisty stages East of Adelaide, consisting of multiple runs over ‘Corkscrew’, ‘Anstey Hill’ and ‘Chain of Ponds’ before heading south to tackle ‘Nairne’, ‘Bull Creek’, ‘Greenhill’s’

and finally ‘Paris Creek’. Our stage times were looking OK at this point, with enough being done to keep us at the pointy end of the field. However, the dreaded ‘virtual chicane’ on Bull creek was going to haunt us this year. Not only did we miss the stage ‘virtual chicane’, we also copped an ‘overspeed’penalty and thus found ourselves heading into the Friday night Gouger St party in Second position, down by 7 seconds to a couple of Perth lads in a very quick 1988 BMW M3. Keeping us honest was the team of Karl von Sanden and Alex Visintin, who after some quick and consistent times in the black 944, found themselves a solid third. Unfortunately Bernie Stack had suffered throttle linkage issues on stage 1 to the tune of about eight minutes, effectively ruining any chance of a podium finish. Other club regulars in Late Classic competition, Brett Sunstrom and Guy Atkinson were sitting nicely in a very credible 12th, however, Roger Paterson and Richard Geue were Winners are grinners.

Tim Pryzibilla and Dainis Silins took out top honours for the second year running. 22

unfortunately out of contention. Despite some quick times early on, mechanical issues meant that they failed to finish the last three stages of the day. I would be hesitant to say it was clutch issues but no-one would believe that! Day two kicked off with some disappointment for all competitors, with stages ‘Teringie’ and ‘Norton Summit’ cancelled due to Norton Summit Rd being washed away by the winter storms. This hit us hard as we had done quite a bit of ‘recce’ on these stages and were looking forward to putting in some quick times. This also meant that the first stages of the day would be ‘Gorge Rd’ and ‘Castambul’, both of which would see us slip further behind the M3, but also putting us within reach of the ever reliable 944 of Von Sanden and Visintin. As we rolled into lunch on day 2 we found ourselves down by 18 seconds to the fast and consistent BMW M3, and joked about forgoing lunch in order to keep the car as light as possible for the next two stages, ‘Scott Bottom’ and ‘Mt. Bold’. These two stages would eventually prove to be a step in the right direction, with us gaining crucial time over the M3. Feeling positive with just three stages to go, we made our way back across to the final Hill’s stage, ‘Mt Lofty’, a fast and twisty run up Greenhill Rd that is quite a favourite with the Rally crowd. And so it was to become a favourite for us to, with a stage run that would see us finish 1st

in class and 8th outright for the stage, despite the speed restriction imposed on us for our category. With just the two Victoria Park night stages left, we were feeling pretty positive until we noticed smoke coming from the rear of the car. I like rallying, because ‘to finish first, first you must finish’ which means everyone’s a chance, however, at this point the prospect of not finishing was looming quite large in my rear vision mirror. Luckily my co-driver, who just so happens to work at RSR Sportscars, jumped straight into action, and after about 15 minutes returned to his seat, somewhat hotter and rather sweaty but declaring the car ‘all good’. Seems the oil catch can had started to overflow onto the headers – heart attack over! With two final runs around Vic Park, the 2016 Classic Adelaide Rally would be over. The penultimate stage would be where I discovered that the Senna Chicaneis a lot tighter than it looks on T.V. I missed it completely and launched the car into the gravel trap but luckily for us we bounced out the other side, with all but a few scratches. With the Rally over, we were grateful to have just finished given the last minute heart attack at Victoria Park and so it was of great excitement when we were told that we had again won the Thoroughbred Trophy. Whilst our campaign was a successful one, others felt the despair of mechanical gremlins. Bernie Stack and Rachel Durbridge, despite

their setback on stage 1, continued to push hard right up until the final stage, cleaning the last two stages at Vic Park. Also hard charging up until the end was Roger Paterson and Richard Geue, who with clutch gremlins sorted, finished the final day with some very quick times, also cleaning the last two Vic Park stages. 2016 would also prove a success for the team of Sunstrom and Atkinson. Their 2015 campaign was plagued with mechanical issues and so it was a fantastic effort to bring the old ‘Porka’ home in 8thOutright, with some hard and fast driving that would also see them take honours of the first Porsche home in competition. So, after consecutive wins in what is becoming a great competition within a competition, I must say that the competitors we have met and competed against really make the event one to look forward to. As much fun as it is competing, the comradery that has now been established between the competitor’s is, I think, what has been a driving success in retaining a core group of competitors for Thoroughbred Trophy. And as you’d expect, Team Jagermeister and the orange ‘track hack’ will be back for another crack in 2017. We look forward to seeing you all there.

October - December 2016

I will never forget as a young kid in the early 2000s the Classic Adelaide Gouger Street party, the cars, the party, the superstar drivers, I was in awe. So it was set, “One day when I grow up….” Fast forward 15 or so years and there I was in November this year sitting next to Alex Visintin, a good friend and a great co-driver, on the start line of the Thursday night Prologue to begin our second Classic Adelaide Rally. 3 years ago I was very lucky to purchase an original one owner ’83 naturally aspirated 944, spec’ed just as I would have from new, which over time I modified with an RS ethos in mind. So when the Sporting Car Club of SA announced that Classic Adelaide was making a come back in 2015, the stars started to align. Alex and I compete in a category called “Thoroughbred Trophy”, which is for pre 1986 cars, and runs on similar rules to Classic Outright but with a speed limit of 130kmh. This allows us to maintain a road-registered car, as a full roll cage is not required. The 2015 Rally was our first event, and with some consistency and luck we managed to pull together 3rd place behind Tim Pryzibilla (1st) in his Jagermeister IROC 911, and Kristian Downing in his 3.2 Carrera, out of 20 or so competitors. We were definitely coming back next year. With a slight change to the rules (Half roll cages now mandatory) and as the Rally’s second year running, the category’s entrants started to look a lot more competitive leading up to 2016. Phil Peak was bringing his Targa West winning E30 M3 across from Perth making the trip with John Duder and his Alpine A110. Steven Hevera had entered his very quick widebody 911, Tim Pryzibilla had resisted moving into Classic Outright, and Bernie Stack was listed in his IROC 911, so it went on. This was going to be a real challenge. This suited Alex and I as we (along with everyone else it seems) came into 2016 with much more preparation. Race suits, HANS devices, some suspension modifications and a good chunk of “Recce”, we and the turn key 944 were ready. Thursday night’s prologue was a great extension of the event. It gave everyone another day to get to know each other, and us an important 2 laps to sort our incar shenanigans out. Friday morning was the best morning to date in my book. We are incredibly lucky in South Australia with how close such amazing roads are. Friday morning with 7 stages before lunch on these amazing roads was a big one! Corkscrew 26

x3, Anstey Hill and Chain of Ponds x2 each. For safety, the first stage of all tarmac rallies has a longer base time (the advertised stage time that there is no benefit going quicker than) which we cleared! Putting us in equal first with Hevera, Pryzibilla and Peak (911,911,M3) with Dan Beck just 3 seconds behind in his immaculate Rx2 coupe. The race was most definitely on. As I hope everyone knows, these three roads are just brilliant fun. Each very different, from the tight and steep Corkscrew/Montacute combo, to the smooth and ever flowing Chain of Ponds. Each following run saw us braking a little deeper and leaning in a bit harder as we started to find our rhythm. Lifting an inside wheel as you turn into a steep downhill “3” early on Montacute, or jumping a blind left handed crest on the inside because Alex calmly tells you to in rally pace note lingo, really must be the best fun out there. (“Right entry, cut left 5 over crest, caution air...” for those interested). I hear Classic Adelaide Rally years ago was famous for its extravagant lunches, dinners and parties, and it most certainly felt like the hay day again as we rolled into Bird in Hand Winery in Woodside for lunch after the morning’s 7 stages. Rally cars on the lawn, gourmet lunch in hand, and good friend Michael Busby in the Classic Outright lead, lunch was good. As the results came out, Alex chimes in, “We’re in fourth!” We were still in the mix much to our surprise, with Pryzibilla leading Peak and Hevera, so the standings were 911, M3, 911, 944. Friday afternoon Alex and I were looking forward to longer and faster stages that really suited the lovely and safe balance of the 944. Nairne, Bull Creek, Greenhills and Paris creek are roads that come alive above the posted speed limits. It is closed roads like these that are as good encouragement as any for you to enter in 2017, even in the ‘Tour’ so to really enjoy your car. Nairne stage was just awesome, our reconnaissance and pace notes gave us sure confidence into some fast and not so clear long bends, and also over the numerous crests, over one of which we passed our second car for the stage! (cars start individually in 30 second intervals). With some quick, safe and consistent running day 1 was over after Paris Creek. I was stoked on the transport into Gouger Street with how faultlessly the 944 had run, how accurate Alex had been all day and with my driving, but it’s all in the results right? …well we hoped it would be in the results. “…We are in 3rd!” Unbelievable, on transport into the Gouger Street party, where it all started for me as

a child, holding a position in the rally well above our experience grade, this is what it’s all about. What a street party it was, Formula 1 from Bennetton and Ferrari, Bathurst winning Jaguar, rally cars lining the street and thousands of people. If you are a car enthusiast, or even someone who just likes to have fun, this was the place to be. Turning into Gouger Street, having marshals split crowds of people for you to find your park gives you the feeling that I imagine Derek Bell would find familiar at the Mille Miglia, but we don’t need that comparison, as this is the Classic Adelaide! Saturday morning, early to the car with pre departure checks and a lot of chatting amongst competitors, a really good bunch these rally folk are. First stage was the whole length of Gorge Road, with lunch following at the BirdwoodMotor Museum. As you may know, Gorge road is split almost in nature into thirds. Medium flowing at the base of the valley, wide smooth and fast as you past the dam, then tight and technical for the last third, it really has it all, and at 7 and a half minutes long it gets pretty full on in race trim. Unfortunately this got the better of a couple of competitors coming out with car issues or damage. Thankfully we made it through in 6th place for the stage and still holding 3rd overall. The pointy end, the afternoon of day two, so it was all business with Alex and I. “Safe, fast, no mistakes” or something along those lines from Alex as we counted down the final hills stage, bottom of Greenhill to Mount Lofty. This was it, lets have a safe push and see where we end up. Just awesome, and we ended up 3rd in category. 3 Seconds behind Bernie Stack who was 6 seconds behind Tim Pryzibilla both in IROC spec 911s, so close!.. The 944 faultless the whole way. Into the Motor Sport Festival, for two last special stages in the Victoria Race Park, each essentially a lap and a half of the course. With a solid lead on 4th place at this stage, and Phil Peak too far ahead in his M3 in 2nd, all we could do was hold third, so it was an obligatory Senna Chicane curb hop as the sun set to knock the cork out of a bottle of champagne for our second Classic Adelaide Rally.

Porsche Wants You

Your step into Porsche one-make racing isn’t as tough, costly or daunting as you may think… Australia is the lucky country, both on and off the race track. Sun, surf and culture aside, we have an enviable motorsport scene that, for Porsche, includes two onemake series – Carrera Cup and GT3 Cup Challenge – making us one of two regions worldwide to boast both these series. This unique ‘ladder’ has allowed Porsche to nurture drivers through its ranks (case studies include Michael Almond, Stephen Grove, Fraser Ross, Richard Muscat and Matt Campbell) improving their ability and experience behind the wheel in an enjoyable, yet professional, racing environment. With the step from GT3 Cup Challenge to Carrera Cup now well worn, Porsche is looking to bridge the gap between Porsche Clubs and GT3 Cup Challenge for those with racing ambitions. Therefore, Porsche is now reaching out to Porsche Club of South Australia members, whether you have previously dabbled in racing or are new to the starting grid, to try your hand at a one-off GT3 Cup Challenge event, of which there are four in neighbouring Victoria, to get a taste of Porsche one-make competition.

“In talking to several Porsche Club members, we found that the perceived barriers to enter GT3 Cup Challenge, including costs, eligibility and even experience, were far greater than reality,” said Porsche Cars Australia Motorsport Manager, Kurt Sakzewski.

For more information on requirements, entry, eligibility and pricing, please feel free to contact Kurt Sakzewski (03 9473 0941 or kurt.sakzewski@porsche.com. au) to discuss GT3 Cup Challenge and climbing Porsche’s unique motor racing ladder.

“We hope to entice several Porsche Club members from each state who own a Porsche 911 GT3 Cup (Type 997) into the GT3 Cup Challenge series at their nearest round to get a taste of what the series is about. It’s a fun, friendly way to be introduced into national level motor racing and compliment current Porsche Club driving activities. I strongly encourage anyone eager to join the grid to contact Porsche for more information.”

2017 Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Australia Calendar Round 1, Sandown Raceway, Victoria (April 07-09, 2017) Round 2, Phillip Island, Victoria (May 2628, 2017) Round 3, Winton Motor Raceway, Victoria (June 09-11, 2017) Round 4, Sydney Motorsport Park, New South Wales (July 07-09, 2017) Round 5, Queensland Raceway, Queensland (Aug 04-06, 2017) Round 6, Phillip Island, Victoria (September 08-10, 2017)

So what do you need in order to race? A Porsche 911 GT3 Cup (Type 997.I/ Type 997.II) that complies with the series regulations is required along with a current CAMS Provisional Circuit Licence (PC) or higher and all up-to-date safety equipment. From there, you can either run the car yourself or utilise the services of a race team to prepare and run your race car, of which there will be one near you with GT3 Cup Challenge experience.

Darien Hereen, numero uno

A warm December day, slight breeze, and more flies than the Wingfield dump provided the perfect setting for the final supersprint of 2016. With 24 entries it was a great turn out including 17 Porsches. Two of the entrants chose the option of untimed laps, giving them the opportunity of finding out their cars capabilities without the pressure of being timed. We had an amazing turn out of volunteers for this sprint, which helps to make sure the day runs smoothly. Thank you to all those who gave up their Sunday to help. There were no major incidents, although Norm Goodall in his Martini Racing 911SC attempted some “bobcat ballet” at turn 1. He didn’t even spill a drop of his Farmers Union Iced Coffee! Unfortunately Chris Ogden had to try out his “can of goo” puncture repair kit. If anyone gets a flat and needs some tips, Chris has the how to ‘You Tube’ links. Darien Hereen had a great day out, breaking his handicap in the first timed session and securing a win for the day. Tony Keenes in his 2012 Boxster S finished a close second and Roger Paterson in his ’74 RS finished 3rd and managed not to blow up anything all day. Lunch time saw smiles brought to the 42

Thanks to Roger Paterson, Greg Keene, Norm Goodall and Steve Herrera who all donated their time and accelerator pedals ensuring the recipients had an experience to remember. An ongoing friendly battle between myself and fellow committee member Steve Thiele in our “non-Porsches” managed to see my competitive streak come out. After my pit crew – Adam and 7 year old Rileyadvised me I need to break later I decided I would try out that theory. If you are considering entering a sprint for the first time, I can highly recommend it. Everyone is extremely helpful, and the experience you get from driving on the track is something you will never experience on the road. If you are interested in coming out and giving it a go but are unsure – please feel free to contact one of the committee members who would be happy to show you the ropes and help you get started.

Motorkhana Mayhem 23rd October 2016

What a thrill!! I decided to have a go at the October Motorkhana event held at the Mallala skidpan with my father to get a feel for his lovely yellow Cayman and generally have some fun.

It was a great day with a large mix of seasoned drivers and newcomers to Motorkhana. As always at club events, the more experienced club members were ready with some great pointers. I felt really welcome on the day.

A couple of my tips for the day; if there is no race day on, there may not be lunch or drinks to purchase. There is not a lot of shade/cover so a hat, sunscreen and/or umbrella may not be a bad idea.

Being a rookie the patterns took me a while to get my head around and I must give special thanks to Roger Paterson for offering to navigate a circuit and being brave enough to get in a car with me!

Watching some of Darien and Roger’s circuits on the day were precision in motion. That being said, I think I had just as much fun as anyone else – even after accruing many WD’s at comparatively much slower speeds.

One thing is for sure though, I’ll be back again to improve my skills and master some more of those tricky patterns. I hope to see you there.

Master of Mallala Championship 12th November 2016

Don Costelloe

Saturday 12th November, 2016 was the last of 4 rounds of the Master of Mallala State Championship. The small field of the Sports Cars category for Round 4 included 2016 regulars Michael O’Donnell 997 GT3 Cup, Adam Trimmer 997 GT3 Cup, Marty Ewer 997.2 GT3 Cup, Don Costelloe 996 GT3 and myself in my 1973 RS. Due to the small numbers, our races were run with a field Saloon Cars which added some extra action. Another club member and regular racer Brett Sunstrom was also at the track. This time with no race car but posted to flagging duties as his last step for full Cams licence (no more P Plates). The weather was ordinary from the morning with rain on and off most of the day. Adam and Marty prepared their cars with slicks on one side and wets on the other in readiness to make a call prior to qualifying in slicks or wets. 48

PORSCHE

REPORT

Qualifying was at 10.00am and the track was a little damp. Marty and Adam opted for wets, Michael was more courageous and went out with full slicks and qualified 1st by nearly 5 seconds. Race 1 was won by Michael, Adam 2nd and Marty 3rd. Michael took a spin at the esses in Race 2 and Adam narrowly missed him. After a quick snap spin Michael was back on the track chasing down Marty. Marty won his first ever race in Race 2. He looked very happy when he climbed out of his car with a huge smile. Marty came out with some more confidence in Race 3 and managed to get just ahead of Michael to win this race. Adam needed to check his pants after a stuck throttle at 200km/h when he went straight through turn 8 into the sand traps. He was lucky that only a front splitter was damaged. Don’s newly wrapped GT3 with RSR Sports cars livery took a couple of hits from the saloon cars. He retired the car during race 3.

Race 4 was won by Michael and Marty 2nd. The 2016 Master of Mallala Awards presentation night was held on 15th December 2016. Winners of the sports car category were; Michael O’Donnell 1st Place Adam Trimmer 2nd Place Emanuel Palyaris 3rd Place Michael O’Donnell also won the overall State Championshipbeing awarded the Master of Mallala 2016. Congratulations to Michael on his driving and determination. Racing can be very addictive and not for all. I encourage anyone considering it, to give it a go. Looking forward to racing on 2017 with all of us considering our options for category choice locally and nationally.

The Little Known Porsche 597

The Porsche 597 “Jagwagen” was a light military vehicle that was developed for a tender to the German army after World War II.

50

PORSCHE

REPORT

It was powered by an air cooled flat four (same as in the 356 of the time) which was of course located in the rear. The engine put out 37kW giving the 597 a top speed of around 100 KPH.

In total 71 Porsche 597’s were manufactured between 1955 and 1958 but with little interest from the military, primarily due to high production costs, the car was quietly retired.

Yes Comrade, There Are Porsches in Moscow Too! July 2016 October - December 2016 53

The Porsche marque has fans in just about every country of the world that possesses strips of tarmac we call roads – and none less than Russia with the Porsche Club of Russia being the guiding light for Porsche owners that want to enjoy their cars to the maximum. The Club counts some 300 members scattered across this huge country with most, logically, in the larger cities – typically St Petersburg, Krasnadar and Nizhny Novgorod and, of course, Moscow. And the Club counts just about every conceivable Porsche model in its midst –going back to the iconic 356A right up to the latest to roll off the production lines at Stuttgart – new members coming together via the Internet, word of mouth, meeting at race tracks or simply flagging down a car and its driver and saying, “Come and join us, we are all enthusiasts!” And after a trip to Russia a few months back and meeting a group of Moscow Porsche owners I am pleased to tell the Porsche world that the love of the cars is as great as anywhere you are likely to come across. But none of this has been easy! Russia may have a history that goes back thousands of years, it may be the largest country by land-mass on Planet Earth (and, incidentally, been invaded more than any other and has repelled every one of those invaders) but the hurdles to obtaining your chosen model – especially classics – are set just about as high as you could possibly get. For a start, nothing could be done until the “Wall” came down. And even when that impenetrable barrier was lifted, it took time for an environment to develop that allowed car enthusiasts to even think of putting a Porsche in the garage. The break-up of the Soviet Union didn’t happen until late 1991 and it took ten years for the first Porsche to be officially imported

into Russia, a water cooled 911. It was May 2001. The intermediate years after the breakup of the Soviet Union were not easy for the “New Born” nation. Those who capitalised on the opportunity and became entrepreneurs tended to opt for swanky cars like top-end BMWs, climb-up-andgo Jeep Grand Cherokees and big, bold Mercs. But for the real connoisseur, the Stuttgart Porsche was the car to aim at. The Internet was a great help; a car was tracked down somewhere in Europe (it was a help that both Russia and Europe are left-hand-drive) an approach made and if successful, the car was purchased. Today, it does NOT help that prices are rising so fast, and that there are such stiff import duties to Russia. But a few cars were imported, that engendered great interest, others joined, friends made and almost imperceptibly a group became a Club. My first contact was via the official Russian Travel Office in London on a visit back to the UK in July this year. I had asked Mr Google and found that the club existed. A sheet of paper was printed – hardly a single word in English – but a telephone number and Olga Pakhomova in the Travel Office soon put a call through and the reply encouraged me to respond, “Please ask if we can meet when we arrive in Moscow in a week’s time.” Seven days later and my Aussie wife, Heather, and I, are sitting in a glitzy hotel lobby in the Vega Best Western Hotel in Moscow searching the many and varied faces milling around us. So how do you recognise a Porsche enthusiast in a crowded foyer in an international hotel in Moscow and you do not speak a word of Russian? Well, the broad smiles say it all but the clincher is the bright red T-shirts emblazoned with Porsche Club Moscow being a bit of a

give-away! And I’m holding up the latest copy of Porsche Report that had come through the letter-box before we set out for the UK – that helps too! Soon a beaming Dmitry Levykin and Zaur Ezhaev are sitting opposite us and promising full co-operation in what the Club is all about and promising a day, two days, “even more” to get their efforts and their cars some publicity. “We are very grateful for your interest in us,” Dmitry tells us. “We are all very busy and it is not possible for many owners to travel long distances to join us at short notice but we will do our best – we are in your hands.” Two days later and three cars are assembled outside the hotel. Dmitry with his red 911, 993, Zaur with the dark brown 993 turbo 911 and a real icon of the Porsche world, a 356A driven by Alexey Babeev. Later we are joined by Alexander Shokarev with his 964 Carrera RS. Cameras are clicking away and then the group moves off to a local tourist attraction, the picture-postcard Kremlin Village (not THE Kremlin, I would add, but a pretty collection of old-style Russian wooden houses, church and bell tower, that provides a fine back-drop to our efforts). Wherever we go, crowds gather, husky Russian men and pretty Russian girls, clearly the interest in Porsche on this warm, sunny day in this fine city is enormous. We have to wrest ourselves away, speeding along some of Moscow’s grand new roads, on fly-overs, through under-passes. Dmitry and his colleagues want to reward us with a beer. “We drive German cars – why not enjoy a German beer in a Moscow pub?” The perfect end to our day. And an answer to our question – are there Porsche cars and fanatics in Russia? You bet!

The weather was perfect, while the Kensington Gardens reserve was expansive and well shaded, swallowing up all our cars and their passengers with ease.

Early in the afternoon we were very fortunate to have a visit from Santa, arriving in style in a Porsche of course. The kids were thrilled to see him and even more excited by the gifts he had for them. The smiles on their faces were priceless.

Catering was excellent with Gormandiser BBQ’s turning it on for us again this year with a welcome variety of meats, salads

All in all another very successful event thanks to the efforts of Helen and James in particular.

Now what can we do to spice things up even more for next year. A raindeer race, a snowman building competition or a raffle to visit Santa’s workshop at the North Pole. Or maybe it would be best if I just leave the organising to the experts. Until next year, take care.

These Club Runs are great social events and a must for those that wish to enjoy their cars in excellent company, and on some of the best roads around Adelaide. Unfortunately I don’t have photos from these events but that just gives me an excuse to share this stunning shot with you to hopefully wet your appetite for future runs. If you take photos at any of our events please don’t hesitate to send them through to me so we can share them with the membership at large through the pages of our magazine

Story: Phil Kellett Photos: Ray Pryor

Ray’s New 911 GT3 RS For those of you with a good memory, you may recall a little piece at the back of the April-June Porsche Report about Lego’s GT3 RS model kit. Well it seems several of our members decided they just had to have one of their own, such was the case with Ray Pryor. Ray informs me the kit came with a coffee table quality instruction manual and a “trillion“ (really??) bits and pieces awaiting assembly. Undeterred Ray got stuck into it and several months, and many scotches later, the masterpiece was finally completed. Ray is very happy with the result and has provided the attached photos to prove he did finish it, and did ultimately get part “A” to match with part “B” etc successfully.Good effort Ray.

Spot the Imposter We have all heard the expression “imitation is the sincerest form of flattery”. Now I don’t know if it’s just me, but from certain angles wouldn’t you agree that the new AMG Roadster GT bears a remarkable resemblance to a Porsche 911 Cabriolet? All I know for sure is that either would look right at home in my garage.

Beware The Portia Spider I know you have all heard of a Porsche Spyder, but have you heard of a Portia Spider, pronounced as in Porsche? Seems this little spider has a lot to live up to with a name like that, and to their credit they are considered intelligent hunters, are agile and, for a spider, pretty good looking little critters. Tick, tick, tick. Welcome to the club little guy.
