eason is here! And yes, we are ready for the fun, the golf, and the famous Route 41 traffic. It’s the time of the year when our nearly 200 courses start to crank it up. Many courses see the biggest percentage of their play in the 90 days of fun from January through the end of March.

We have lots of activity going on, including a great Champions tour tournament. Coming up for us is the Ace Group Classic. This Champions Tour Event brings some of the finest players to ever blast a drive or drain a putt. You can see this event at Twin Eagles, Golf Magazines “Best New Private Course of the Year”.

We continue to see new golf and non-golf community developments in Lee and Collier Counties. Every day the growth becomes more evident as you roll along past multiple new home locations throughout the area.

One of our featured communities, Talis Park, with one of only two Greg Norman and Pete Dye designed courses, is one of those outstanding venues. The course features tees, fairways, rough and greens all made of Paspalum grass. Suffice it to say, this is a very special players dream.

Alico Family Golf is new, and it’s going to be really exciting and fun. This huge 30+ acre site off Alico Road is going to bring enjoyment to young and old alike. Their plans include a really BIG driving range with 70 stalls, and some are even cooled for summer practice. They also have a special SNAG (Starting New At Golf) facility, a miniature golf course, snack bar and even professional lessons from PGA Pro Tom Speicher.

A word about SNAG -- You may not have heard of SNAG, so for those of you who haven’t, I have a quick word from the creators of SNAG “SNAG® is the skills-acquisition program used in the national school golf program headed by the World Golf Foundation’s First Tee Program. There are more than 5,000 schools that are successfully introducing children to golf in the U.S. and over 8,000 worldwide.”

Every day in the golf business, we hear the same things, we need more players, we need more members, we need to make golf fun and accessible to the masses. The opportunity to bring young people into the game is what SNAG is all about. It’s good for visitors, golfers, locals, and most importantly, young potential golfers.

Last but not least, you’ve heard it, and you know when it’s the thing to do; “Play it Forward”. Square Up to Improve Your Ball Striking

What is Square? Square is a term used to identify the lines in our stance to a target.You notice many pros and good players have sticks on the ground when practicing. These sticks are to assist the player with their alignments and ball positions. The first stick which is close to the ball is aligned at the target and is called the line of play or target line. Another stick is then placed parallel to the line of play stick near the feet which is called the body line or stance line. The body has five lines that need to be parallel, the feet, knees, hips, shoulders and eyes. If all these lines are parallel and the club is at the target we call this square. In order to make it easy to get a repetitive swing it is best to stand as square as possible. When a player intentionally wants to slice or hook a ball these lines are altered changing the path and clubface in relation to the target causing spin to curve the ball. If you are curving the ball, slices or hooks, check to see if you are square to your intended target.Some players will ask another player or there coach during practice to stand behind them to see if they are square.

Purchase some alignment sticks and used properly it will be a great investment.

Maximizing Your Mental Game for Match Play Match play is a great format for developing your mental game because it’s essentially a series of mini-matches, one hole at a time, rather than a shot-by-shot, cumulative measurement of your performance. Unfortunately, many golfers experience unnecessary pressure in match play events simply by focusing on the wrong things. To avoid succumbing to the typical distractions that can creep in and wreak havoc during match play, here are 5 rules to help you keep your head in the game Target the Right Competitor Your perception of your circumstances has a great impact on your performance, so make sure you are competing against the right opponent. In match and stroke play, your competition should always be (1) the course, and (2) improving on your last best performance, stroke by stroke. To focus on what another is player is or isn’t doing at any point will shift your attention and energy off the factors needed to maximize your own game.

Keep Your Eye on the Ball It’s important to keep your focus moving forward. Once a shot is played, it’s over, and it’s time to focus on the next opportunity that lies before you. There’s no making up in golf, so you’ve got to learn to leave the past behind you.

Choose to play within your game, attending to one shot at a time.

Ride the Wave of Pressure If you want to play competitively, you must accept the fact that you’re going to

experience pressure and nerves from time to time. Nerves may increase when you work hard to take the lead, or to maintain it. Keep in mind that the presence of nerves signals your readiness to meet the challenge before you.

Embracing your nerves will help you leverage the power they can provide to reach your full potential.

Smile When it Hurts åGolfers often have no idea that their body language reflects exactly what they are feeling inside. If you find yourself down a hole or two, don’t give your opponent more of an advantage by letting him know you are less than thrilled with your performance. The best way to maintain a winner’s attitude is to continually identify the strengths worth repeating in every shot, even the acomplete miss hits.

There is value in every shot.

Stop Trying Did you know that when you try, you are only giving yourself a 50/50 chance at success? There’s no sense in playing a shot if you aren’t completely committed to producing a successful outcome. Play the shots you know you can make, and use the clubs you know you can trust.

Believe in your ability that you’ve worked so hard to develop, and play with an expectation of success.

Take Less Loft When Chipping on an Uphill Lie A Tip From Dave Witt, Director of Golf at the Talis Park Golf Club A common mistake when hitting an uphill chip shot is coming up way short of the hole. Most amateur golfers use a club with too much loft. Remember to take into account the upward slope of the hill which will increase the loft of your club. Be careful using your sand wedge because the ball will likely fly too high and come up short.

Instead, try using a 7, 8 or 9 iron which will produce a lower shot trajectory and get the ball rolling. This takes less effort and makes judging distances much For Information Contact: easier. Good Luck!

Visit us or see our website for more details A Lesson from Tom I often see students and regular patrons spend all their practice time hitting balls, which of course is important for improved ball striking.

However, I rarely observe the same dedication to their short game, the most important ingredient for lower scores. During a lesson I ask students what their golf goals are. Most reply, “to become more consistent and lower their scores”, certainly admirable goals. After all, the object of golf is to shoot as low a score as possible, right? Let’s analyze what makes up a typical score. It’s common knowledge that a majority of your score is made up of shots inside 100 yards. According to Golf Magazine* an average golfer shooting 90 has a shot breakdown comparable to the following; 12 drives, 8 fairway wood shots, 14 iron approach shots, 23 short game shots, and 33 putts. Keep in mind these are approximates for the 90 shooter. Notice in this example 56 shots are considered short game, or 62% of the score. A few of the 14 iron approaches could be inside 100 yards as well, but are not included in this figure. It stands to reason that improving your short game should be part of the prescription for lowering your scores! Just as students have goals that we address in their lessons, my main goal as a teacher is to help actually lower their scores.

A remedy based on the example above might be to spend 60% of your practice time on chipping and putting, and 40% hitting balls.

Most golfers want a full swing lesson, which is fine and often necessary. However, I suggest starting with a short game lesson or two, especially for those who commit to ongoing lessons. I spend a significant amount of time on short game skills with my juniors. The juniors who practice even a little are rewarded with lower scores. When I began instructing

professionally, my boss and mentor told me, “If you want to know who the good players are at this club, just look out on the chipping and putting green”. How true it was!

Naturally these good players hit plenty of range balls, but they also spend an equal amount of time on their short game. I’m not advocating that you stop hitting balls, only that you include some short game practice as part of the recipe to lower your scores.If you need help with technique and how to practice, take a lesson from a PGA Professional. With a little know how and effort, you’ll break barriers you thought you couldn’t and achieve your scoring goals.

The quickest way to learn to play and lower your scores is

to use your imagination.

The drill I use to make me improve my ball striking skills, distance control and above all my imagination which, improve my confidence is to play better golf is to limit my amount of equipment.

Here is the first drill, go out to play with ONLY three balls.

Yes, for some this can be a very hard thing to do but that is the point. It should be hard as you now could be going only a few holes if you loose the three balls. The learning process is to select the shots and clubs in order to score and not loose balls. You must concentrate and plan each shot more carefully. After a few rounds, you will see the difference in how you manage yourself and strategize around the course. You then do it with two balls and eventually one ball. It will amaze you how differently you will think with fewer resources.

The next drill is to limit the number of clubs in your bag.

Pick any four clubs and a putter for a total of five clubs in all. Example, something to hit off the tee, a club for your second shot that gives you control and distance, a club for shots around the green and from out of the bunkers and a club for short shots into and around the green for options to run the ball. Now you need the imagination to make up shots to run up on the green or to lay up back from the hole to use one of the clubs you selected for this drill.

Welcome to real golf, its fun and you will start thinking more about the shots you need to hit and less on how to hit the shots.
