2023 ANNUAL REPORT AND HONOR ROLL
Our Story
Established in memory of Ron Foley, who lost his battle with pancreatic cancer in October of 2005, the Foundation bearing his name is dedicated to promoting early detection and, ultimately, finding a cure for the disease through ongoing research.
Inspiration for the first fundraising event – a Kentucky Derby party in 2009 – came when those closest to Ron in life felt they could harness the generosity of his spirit to raise funds for pancreatic cancer research. The day’s contributions were donated to pancreatic cancer research in Ron’s memory, and a tradition was born.
Encouraged by the success of that initial Derby Day gathering, and with the support of family, friends and dedicated volunteers, Ron’s widow, Barbara Foley, formed the Ron Foley Foundation. Today, this 501(c)(3) charitable organization sponsors a series of annual events to build awareness and raise funds for research, education and patient assistance.
Ron’s Rescue Fund
While we recognize that we can’t win the fight against pancreatic cancer without raising funds for research and awareness, we also know that patients and their families are under tremendous financial pressure.
Imagine receiving the devastating news that you, your spouse or another loved one may have pancreatic cancer. Your world is changed forever. You quickly become engulfed in the medical system. Financial resources are soon stretched to the limit. You may even find you’ve exhausted your savings, and the stress becomes unbearable.
That’s why we created Ron’s Rescue Fund to provide short-term financial assistance to cover expenses for essential needs that will otherwise go unmet.
Our Mission
Fund medical research leading to improved diagnosis, more effective treatment and a cure for pancreatic cancer.
Promote public awareness of pancreatic cancer through education.
Reduce human suffering caused by pancreatic cancer by giving direct financial aid to pancreatic cancer patients.

A LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
Dear Friends,
I am delighted to present the 2023 Annual Report for the Ron Foley Foundation. As we reflect on the past year, we are deeply grateful for the unwavering support and dedication shown by our donors, volunteers, and supporters. Your contributions have been invaluable in advancing our mission to fund pancreatic cancer research, raise awareness through education, and provide financial assistance to patients in need.
As a result of these efforts and your generosity, I’m proud to report our net operating revenue for fiscal year 2023 was $99,086, a 42% increase over the prior year. Our total revenue from all sources for the fiscal year 2023 was $400,276, a 36% increase over 2022. Ron’s Rescue donations increased by 67% from the prior year to $60,763 from which we funded $45,450 in grants to pancreatic cancer patients in need. Since the inception of Ron’s Rescue in 2012, we have distributed grants of over $500,000 to individuals and families stricken by the deadly disease.
Over the past year, we have undertaken a thorough review of our operations to enhance our effectiveness in combating pancreatic cancer. We are pleased to welcome Callie Schnog as our new Director, along with Kevin Dowd as Chairperson and Carolyn McKenna as Vice Chairperson. Under the guidance of our consultant, Lisa Tanen-Lafontaine, we organized our inaugural day-long Board Retreat and adopted a comprehensive five-year strategic plan. The active involvement and support of our Board have
been instrumental in this process. Additionally, our newly established Finance Committee has led us in revamping our budgeting process. We have also implemented an industryleading cloud-based accounting system, enhancing our financial reporting capabilities, and negotiated a more favorable lease with our new landlord, who has graciously become a sponsor. Furthermore, the Foundation was grateful to receive a grant for $25,000 from the Richard P. Garmany Fund. The grant is to be used to hire a parttime Executive Director to help implement these improvements.
While these operational improvements are significant, our commitment to our mission remains paramount. We have expanded our efforts to educate the public about the heightened risk of pancreatic cancer, particularly in the Black community. Our public service educational video on this important issue has reached over 800,000 households in the greater Hartford area. Additionally, we have continued to support Dr. Richard Frank and Nuvance Health in their vital research on the “Identification of novel non-invasive circulating biomarkers for treatment prediction and targeted therapy in pancreatic cancer.” Furthermore, we awarded our inaugural $10,000 Fellowship grant to healthcare professionals to foster promising work in pancreatic cancer patient care and treatment.
Our participation in the Eversource Hartford Marathon, led by Jennifer Loughran and Molly Burke, Team RFF raised a record $22,000 in October.
Barbara Foley President
We also dedicated additional resources to support National Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month in November, raising over $24,000 through initiatives such as the We CARE Card campaign sponsored by the West Hartford Center Business Association and the Battle of the Bars competition. The month culminated in our annual World Pancreatic Cancer Day Candlelight Vigil of Hope, sponsored by Prime Healthcare, at which we honored the memory of those lost to this disease and offer support to survivors.
In conclusion, the Foundation has undergone significant positive changes and reaffirmed its commitment to fighting pancreatic cancer. However, none of this would be possible without the incredible and continued support of all of you.
Thank you for standing with us in the fight against pancreatic cancer.
Together, we are making a difference.

Difference MAKING A
Ask the Experts
The Ron Foley Foundation sponsored a free “Ask the Experts” webinar with the Hartford HealthCare Cancer Institute during Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month. The topic, “Pancreatic Cancer: An Integrated Approach to Care,” focused on common risk factors, signs and symptoms, treatment options, and innovations. It was followed by a live question and answer session with Dr. Osama Siddique, board-certified in Gastroenterology, and Dr. David Curtis, boardcertified in General Surgery, both from Hartford Hospital.
Are You Ready for It? Striking Out Pancreatic Cancer
Thanks to the generosity of board member Kevin Dowd and his wife Cathy, the Foundation was able to auction off tickets to Taylor Swift’s sold-out Eras Tour. The auction was held in March and advertised to the public. The package included hotel accommodations and two tickets to the show at MetLife Stadium. The package raised $2,250 for the Foundation and was purchased by a young lady who had been personally touched by pancreatic cancer.
Ron Foley Foundation Day at Dunkin Donuts Park was a perfect day to come together to cheer on the Yard Goats as they took on the Yankees affiliate team. Foundation volunteer Zachary DeMarco threw out the first pitch, and everyone enjoyed the last home game of the season. It was a beautiful day to “strike out” pancreatic cancer!
The WEHA Dog Walk
The Foundation was honored to participate in the WeHa Dog Walk, a community “FUNraiser” in West Hartford Center. Local artists turned dog statues into works of art to benefit local charities. All dogs had signage that allowed admirers to give directly to the Ron Foley Foundation. We would like to thank our sponsor, Robin Gebrian from William Raveis Real Estate, and artist Kelly Kelly for creating our beautiful mosaic dog, “Blossom,” who was a sight to behold.

In a powerful display of solidarity and determination, Team Ron Foley Foundation laced up their running shoes and hit the pavement at the 2022 Eversource Hartford Marathon, rallying behind a shared mission to combat pancreatic cancer. As an official charity partner of the Eversource Hartford Marathon, the Ron Foley Foundation used the opportunity to raise vital funds for patients in need and spread awareness. Led by Jennifer Loughran and Team Captain Molly Burke, Team Ron Foley Foundation embarked on a journey fueled by passion, purpose, and a commitment to making a difference in the fight against pancreatic cancer. As both captain and top fundraiser, Burke exemplified the spirit of leadership and determination.
The marathon offered participants various race options, catering to runners of all levels and abilities. Whether conquering the full marathon, half marathon, or 5K, each stride taken by Team Ron Foley Foundation represented a step towards hope and healing for those impacted by pancreatic cancer. Additionally, virtual participation enabled supporters from afar to join in the collective effort, further expanding the reach and impact of the team’s endeavor.
Among the standout fundraisers were Cathy Lou King and Michael Hinman. Hinman, Ron’s grandson and a first-time runner, was also the winner of the Kids’ Race. In addition to their athletic feats, Team RFF spread awareness at Charity Village in Bushnell Park through engaging interactions and heartfelt conversations. Team RFF raised over $22,000 to support Ron’s Rescue—a lifeline of financial aid for pancreatic cancer patients in need, and proved that together, we can outrun pancreatic cancer!.
Together we can outrun pancreatic cancer!

Purple Light Vigil of Hope
On World Pancreatic Cancer Day, we hosted our 4th annual Purple Light Vigil of Hope. Attendees gathered in Veterans Memorial Park in West Hartford Center to honor and remember those touched by pancreatic cancer. It was a beautiful and poignant tribute. Thank you to Taylor Rental for providing the lighting, and to Lenny Burke for his beautiful rendition of “Amazing Grace” to end the evening.
We CARE Card
We were so grateful to be the beneficiary of this year’s We Care Card, sponsored by the West Hartford Center Business Association. The $50 card offers discounts at participating businesses in West Hartford Center during the month of November. All proceeds from the cards were donated to the Ron Foley Foundation. Thirty businesses in West Hartford Center participated and $20,000 was raised for the Foundation! Thank you to the West Hartford Center Business Association and to all the participating businesses who helped make this such a huge success.

Battle Bars of the
This year was our best Battle of the Bars yet! A friendly competition between participating bars and restaurants during the month of November helps to support the Foundation and raise awareness of pancreatic cancer. Bartenders create a signature purple cocktail, and a portion of proceeds from each cocktail sold are donated to the Ron Foley Foundation. The bar that raises the most money is the winner of the Ron Foley Foundation Cup! We would like thank Connecticut Distributors Inc., Chicago Sam’s Cromwell, William Grant and Sons, and Tony Sisti for making this year’s Battle of the Bars such a success. Thank you to Jennifer Verraneault from Outdoor Advertsing for the incredible Battle of the Bars billboards that were on display during the month of November. Compassion
In the hardest times, it’s often the kindness of strangers that offers solace and support. Such was the case for Susanna Burgess, a resident of Griswold, CT, originally from Brazil, who found herself navigating her mother’s pancreatic cancer diagnosis. It was through Ron’s Rescue that Burgess and her family found comfort in their darkest hour.
Burgess, who runs the animal rescue organization, All Paws on Deck, was no stranger to compassion. However, when her own mother, Leda Pinto, began experiencing severe stomach pains, leading to a devastating stage 4 pancreatic cancer diagnosis at the age of 68, Burgess found herself grappling with the harsh realities of a healthcare system that seemed stacked against her family.
What made the situation even more challenging was the fact that Burgess’s mother, a permanent legal resident in the US, did not have health insurance due to the fact that she and her longtime American boyfriend of a decade had never married. Despite being in the country through proper legal channels, she found herself ineligible for any kind of assistance, including Medicaid, leaving the family burdened with mounting medical bills and a sense of helplessness. In their hour of need, Burgess stumbled
upon the Ron Foley Foundation. After applying for assistance through Ron’s Rescue, Burgess and her mother were relieved to receive a grant from the foundation, which proved to be a lifeline in their time of crisis.
Reflecting on her experience with the Ron Foley Foundation, Burgess expressed gratitude for the compassionate support they provided.
“The experience was very pleasant,” she said. “Cathy [Lou King, staff member at RFF] was always so kind at a time when comfort and kindness were what I needed so much. Her emails were like virtual hugs.”
As her mother’s condition worsened and she completed her final round of chemotherapy, her mother’s desperate wish was to return to her home in Brazil. Thanks to the grant from Ron’s Rescue, Burgess was able to fulfill her mother’s wish, purchasing a plane ticket that allowed her to spend precious moments with her family and beloved animals.
Tragically, upon her return to the US, Burgess’s mother’s partner passed away, leaving her with nothing. With no treatments left and the disease progressing, she made the difficult decision to return to Brazil, where she spent three precious months surrounded by loved ones before peacefully passing away with
Burgess at her bedside.
For Burgess and her family, the support they received from the Ron Foley Foundation was nothing short of invaluable. In a time of uncertainty and despair, the foundation provided not only financial assistance but also a sense of compassion and understanding that helped them navigate the challenges they faced.
As Burgess continues her work with All Paws on Deck, she carries with her the memory of her mother’s courageous battle and the kindness of those who helped ease her burden along the way. She is determined to help change legislation that did not allow her mother to be eligible for assistance, despite being a legal resident of the United States for many years.
RON’S RESCUE FUND
Founded in 2012, Ron’s Rescue provides critical short-term financial assistance to cover expenses for pancreatic cancer patients in need. The Ron’s Rescue Fund helps keep the lights on, homes heated, and food on the table for patients who are unable to work due to their illness. To date, Ron’s Rescue Fund has provided over $500,000 in support to pancreatic cancer patients and has become the cornerstone of the Ron Foley Foundation.
During the 14th Annual Ron’s Run for the Roses event, attendees had the opportunity to hear from Laura Donnelly, an Oncology social worker at Yale New Haven Health, who shared insights into the tremendous impact that Ron’s Rescue has on patients and their families. The event saw a significant outpouring of support, with generous donations totaling over $57,000 raised to further aid patients in need.
Our pride in the Foundation’s accomplishments is completely overshadowed by our conviction that we have only just begun!

Commitment
Callie Schnog, the Foundation’s newest board member, is a beacon of dedication and warmth within the Ron Foley Foundation. As a longstanding attorney with Travelers for nearly three decades, Schnog brings her professional acumen and a deeply personal connection to the cause. Her journey with the Foundation is not merely a professional obligation; it’s a heartfelt mission rooted in personal experience and a desire to make a difference.
Having lost her father to pancreatic cancer in 1985, when he was just 54 years old, Schnog intimately understands the devastation wrought by this disease. Despite the grim prognosis of stage 4 pancreatic cancer, her father defied the odds, bravely fighting for three and a half more years. This intensely personal experience fuels Schnog’s passion for the cause, driving her unwavering commitment to making a difference in the lives of those affected by this relentless illness.
Her journey with the Ron Foley Foundation began through a serendipitous encounter with a longtime friend and fellow advocate, Lisa Tanen-La Fontaine. It was a natural fit for Schnog, who readily embraced the opportunity to lend her expertise and passion to the cause. “Unfortunately, I
have known too many people in my life that have been affected by pancreatic cancer, so this is really important to me,” Schnog shares.
Since officially joining the board in 2022, Schnog has infused the Foundation with her infectious energy and genuine warmth. For her, the essence of the Foundation lies not only in the pursuit of a cure but also in the compassionate support offered to families navigating the daunting challenges of pancreatic cancer.
“Because the mortality rate of pancreatic cancer is so high, [the Foundation] sees the need to support families and to support patients during treatment,” Schnog emphasizes.
“When I first met Callie, I was struck by her enthusiasm, intellect, and her passion for fighting pancreatic cancer, having lost her father to the disease,” said Foundation president Barbara Foley. “But as we talked, I learned that she had worked with Ron at Travelers many years ago, and that just seemed like it was meant to be. We are thrilled to have her as a part of our Board.”
Meaningful connections and shared purpose have marked Schnog’s tenure on the board. “I have enjoyed being able to meet like-minded people who are dedicated to finding a cure but
Generosity
A devoted wife and mother and successful CPA, Ashley Hanscom was the first donor who committed to a monthly contribution to the Ron Foley Foundation. Hanscom’s connection to the Foundation is a very personal one: she is the niece of Ron Foley, the Foundation’s namesake. Her father, James, is Ron’s youngest brother. Ron, whose courageous battle with pancreatic cancer inspired the creation of the Foundation, left an indelible mark on Hanscom’s life. She fondly remembers her uncle as not only a beloved family member but also as a source of inspiration and guidance.
“My uncle’s brave battle with pancreatic cancer was my first experience with the illness and loss of a loved one and forever changed my life,” Hanscom reflects. “Ron was the inspiration for me to become a CPA, as he was. Most importantly, he taught us to love life to the fullest as if each day is our last.”
Driven by her deep admiration for her uncle and his legacy, Hanscom made the decision to become the first monthly donor to the Ron Foley Foundation. Her financial commitment serves as a testament to her belief in the Foundation’s mission of providing support to those affected by
pancreatic cancer and funding critical research endeavors.
“I am so proud of the incredible work that the Foley Family has done with creating this Foundation in memory of my Uncle Ron,” Hanscom shares. “All the staff and volunteers tirelessly work to make the Foundation a success through supporting those touched by this cancer and by funding further research. I am honored to be able to contribute monthly to this effort and assist in providing financial support to others in their time of need.”
Hanscom’s dedication to the foundation extends beyond her financial contributions. Recently, she had the opportunity to refer a friend who was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer to the Foundation. This individual, a hard-working single father without health insurance, faced grim prospects due to his inability to work and the high cost of travel to Boston for treatment. Hanscom provided him with information about the Foundation and within a week, he received a care package and financial support from Ron’s Rescue. This assistance enabled him to access the best possible care in Boston and focus on making cherished memories with his daughter. For Hanscom, this act of kindness and support embodies
also helping families,” Schnog reflects, highlighting the sense of community and shared resolve that defines the foundation’s ethos. For Schnog, serving on the Board is not merely a philanthropic endeavor for Callie but a profoundly personal calling rooted in her connection to the cause and a way to give back to something that means so much to her.

her uncle’s generous and loving spirit. The ongoing support facilitated by monthly donations plays a pivotal role in sustaining the Ron Foley Foundation’s ability to assist pancreatic cancer patients who are in need. These regular contributions also enable the Foundation to persist in its mission of funding crucial medical research initiatives that are essential for advancing our understanding of pancreatic cancer and developing more effective treatments. Hanscom’s commitment to the Foundation ensures that her uncle’s legacy lives on, bringing hope and healing to countless families affected by this devastating disease.

Community
Tony Sisti, the Community Ambassador for the Ron Foley Foundation, holds a crucial role in raising awareness, fostering partnerships, and driving fundraising efforts. Leveraging his professional acumen and unwavering dedication, Sisti makes a profound impact in the fight against pancreatic cancer.
With a diverse professional background spanning several areas of information technologies at Travelers Insurance, Sisti brings a wealth of expertise to his role. However, it was his personal connection with Ron Foley, a senior executive at Travelers, that ignited his passion for the cause. Attending the inaugural Ron’s Run for the Roses event, hosted in their backyard by Barbara Foley, Ron’s wife, sparked Sisti’s desire to contribute more significantly. Despite Barbara’s initial intention to keep the event intimate, Sisti envisioned its potential to become a grand affair held at an equestrian venue. Through his efforts, the event has evolved into one of the premier Kentucky Derby gatherings in Connecticut, attracting hundreds of attendees each year.
In his role as the RFF Community Ambassador, Sisti actively engages with business, professional, and social organizations to promote the foundation’s mission. “I actively look for appropriate opportunities to promote the organization’s mission by building new business collaborations and personal relationships. One of the key organizations that I have partnered with over several years is the West Hartford Chamber of Commerce. This partnership has afforded me the opportunity to reach out to new connections to share the opportunity for them to personally get involved in the RFF organization’s mission,” explains Sisti.
One of Sisti’s most notable contributions to RFF is the creation of the “Battle of the Bars” fundraiser—a dynamic initiative that has captivated the community and garnered widespread support. “For several years, the Delamar Hotel West Hartford has been a partner by turning their external water fountain purple in November to support pancreatic cancer awareness month. Building on this relationship, I came up with a creative fundraising idea in 2021 to host a friendly competition between the Delamar Hotels in West Hartford and Southport to raise money by selling purple drinks,” Sisti explains. What began as a local event
quickly expanded, encompassing establishments throughout West Hartford Center and across the state of Connecticut.
“The Battle of the Bars competition has afforded RFF the opportunity to significantly increase the exposure of its mission. Most importantly, the Battle of the Bars is raising funds to financially support pancreatic cancer patients in need.” Reflecting on his involvement with the Ron Foley Foundation, Sisti emphasizes the organization’s profound impact not only within West Hartford but also across Greater Hartford, the state of Connecticut, and beyond. He underscores the foundation’s multifaceted approach, including raising awareness about pancreatic cancer, funding cutting-edge research, and providing crucial financial assistance to patients. Sisti finds inspiration in witnessing the tangible results of the foundation’s work and the dedication of its hard-working volunteers and staff. “I am constantly motivated by the fact that a local nonprofit with a small administration, staff, and a large array of hard-working volunteers continues to grow the organization’s mission and achieve great milestones,” says Sisti.
Tony Sisti’s dedication to the Ron Foley Foundation serves as an inspiration to us all. His unwavering commitment, innovative spirit, and compassionate nature exemplify the true essence of community service. As he continues to champion the cause, Sisti reminds us that by coming together, we can make a meaningful difference in the fight against pancreatic cancer.
THE RON FOLEY FOUNDATION’S FIRST PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT RAISES AWARENESS ABOUT PANCREATIC CANCER IN THE AFRICAN AMERICAN COMMUNITY
The Ron Foley Foundation has taken a significant step in its mission to educate and raise awareness about pancreatic cancer, particularly within the African American community. This past year, the Foundation created its first public service announcement (PSA) focusing on the increased risk of pancreatic cancer among African Americans and the higher mortality rates associated with the disease in this population. Pancreatic cancer is one of the deadliest forms of cancer, with a low survival rate often due to late-stage diagnosis. What makes this issue even more pressing is the disproportionate impact it has on African Americans. Studies have shown that African Americans are more likely to develop pancreatic cancer and are also more likely to die from it compared to other racial and ethnic groups.
The PSA, which was aired for the first time during Black History Month in February 2023, targeted a specific audience in Connecticut. The goal was to reach individuals within the African American community and provide them with crucial information about the risk factors, symptoms, and importance of early detection.
“We believe that education and awareness are key in the fight against pancreatic cancer,” said Barbara Foley, Founder and President of the Ron Foley Foundation. “By creating this PSA and airing it during Black History Month, we aimed to reach those who may be at higher risk and empower them with knowledge that could ultimately save lives.”
The Foundation’s efforts extend beyond this PSA, forming part of a larger initiative to engage with the greater Hartford African American community. Through community outreach programs and educational campaigns, they are working to bridge gaps in understanding, encourage regular screenings, and promote healthy lifestyles that can reduce the risk of pancreatic cancer.
Kim Demarco for their participation in the commercial’s production.
The success of the PSA wouldn’t have been possible without the collaboration of dedicated individuals. Special thanks go to David Chmielewski for producing the PSA and to Foundation volunteers Zachary and
The impact of the PSA was significant, reaching over 10,000 viewers within the targeted audience during February 2023. This achievement marks a crucial milestone in the Foundation’s ongoing efforts to combat pancreatic cancer and save lives within the African American community. As awareness continues to grow and initiatives like these gain momentum, there is hope for a future where early detection and effective treatments lead to improved outcomes for all individuals affected by pancreatic cancer.
