Ron’s Rescue Fund Established in memory of Ron Foley, who lost his battle with pancreatic cancer in October of 2005, the Foundation bearing his name is dedicated to promoting early detection and, ultimately, finding a cure for the disease through ongoing research.
Inspiration for the first fundraising event – a Kentucky Derby party in 2009 – came when those closest to Ron in life felt they could harness the generosity of his spirit to raise funds for pancreatic cancer research. The day’s contributions were donated to pancreatic cancer research in Ron’s memory, and a tradition was born. Encouraged by the success of that initial Derby Day gathering, and with the support of family, friends and dedicated volunteers, Ron’s widow, Barbara Foley, formed the Ron Foley Foundation. Today, this 501(c)(3) charitable organization sponsors a series of annual events to build awareness and raise funds for research, education and patient assistance.
While we recognize that we can’t win the fight against pancreatic cancer without raising funds for research and awareness, we also know that patients and their families are under tremendous financial pressure. Imagine receiving the devastating news that you, your spouse or another loved one may have pancreatic cancer. Your world is changed forever. You quickly become engulfed in the medical system. Financial resources are soon stretched to the limit. You may even find you’ve exhausted your savings, and the stress becomes unbearable. That’s why we created Ron’s Rescue Fund to provide short-term financial assistance to cover expenses for essential needs that will otherwise go unmet.
Our Mission Fund medical research leading to improved diagnosis, more effective treatment and a cure for pancreatic cancer. Promote public awareness of pancreatic cancer through education. Reduce human suffering caused by pancreatic cancer by giving direct financial aid to pancreatic cancer patients.

A LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear friends, Looking back on 2021, our second year of the COVID-19 pandemic, I’m proud our Foundation exemplified resilience amid an ever-changing and unpredictable landscape. Thanks to the tireless work of our staff and volunteers and the continued support of our sponsors, we were able to hold not one but two successful, socially safe, inperson fundraising events - an incredible feat in any year. Due to the cancellation of Ron’s Ron 2020 in early March, we faced a large void in our fundraising schedule. Thanks to the creativity and support of Alison Patricelli and Folly Farm, we were able to host our first drive-in-style event, Park ‘N Picnic in early September. I would be remiss in failing to mention our remarkable Honorary Chair, Tony award winning actor, director and pancreatic cancer advocate James Naughton, who didn’t hesitate to honor his commitment at this later date and graciously provided worldclass entertainment for our lucky guests. If that wasn’t enough, on May 1, 2021, we held the 12th Annual Ron’s Run for the Roses. The event was drive-in style and virtual. Our incredible Presenting Sponsor, New Country Motor Cars Group, displayed an enticing array of cars in front of the big screen. Foundation Board Member and WTNH cochief meteorologist, Joe Furey, presided passionately over the auction with his good friend and
our Honorary Chair, WTNH Anchor Dennis House. There was joy and resolve in the air on that beautiful day. In this Annual Report you will meet some of the exceptional people with whom we’ve had the honor to work. Individuals who have motivated us with their courage and strength like Robert Thout, a multiple Ron’s Rescue recipient. And those dedicated to help others, like Foundation volunteer, Gail Gretzmacher and St. Francis Hospital Social Worker, Lee Tremback. While the world shut down, pancreatic cancer never disappeared. Mortality rates remain the bleakest of all major cancers at a five-year survival rate of just 10%. In 2021 nearly 60,000 people were diagnosed with the disease. During the pandemic routine medical care for pancreatic cancer patients was often missed or delayed, treatments and surgeries were faced alone and many clinical trials were postponed. Through it all the Foundation never wavered in our commitment to raise public awareness of this deadly disease and to provide direct financial aid to patients in need. The same can be said about you, our sponsors, supporters and donors for in this bleakest of years your generosity never faltered. We were able to remain a fiscally healthy organization dedicated to our mission, with your help. In fact, during this

past fiscal year the Foundation received a stock donation of $100,000 - our single largest donation from an individual donor in our history. In closing, I can’t help but think about our Candlelight Vigil, held every World Pancreatic Cancer Day in November. We welcome anyone to join us to hold a candle and remember their loved ones, those lost to pancreatic cancer and those battling the disease. The event is held outdoors and while the weather can be quite cold, the event always warms my heart. It reminds me of our shared losses and the hope that binds us together in the fight against pancreatic cancer, not only that night but throughout the year. Reflecting on this past year and your incredible support, I can’t help but be excited to see what we can achieve in 2022. Together, we can make a difference.

Happy Endings The pandemic upended many plans over the past year, but patience paid off for our lucky 2019 Kentucky Derby raffle winners, Lisa and Eddie Richardson. Outdrive Pancreatic Cancer Golf Challenge For the 6th year in a row, the Foundation was pleased to participate with the Travelers Championship, Birdies for Charity program. Eversource Hartford Marathon – Virtual We didn’t know what to expect with the first-time ever virtual marathon, but Team RFF surpassed the Foundation’s wildest expectations. The RFF team raised the most it has ever raised during our previous five years of participating in the Eversource Hartford Marathons. Nine runners/walkers raised $13,355 to help patients through Ron’s Rescue Fund.

The Foundation received 100% of sales from theses delectable treats. West Hartford women’s clothier, J. Motivation
Monica Lamoureux joined the Ron Foley Foundation as Director of Community Relations in 2018. “When I read the job description posted online and did a bit more research about the Foundation – I knew it was somewhere I wanted to be,” she says. That’s because Monica lost her mom to ovarian cancer. “Although it’s a different type of cancer, they are both rarely discovered until late stages, and there’s not a lot of awareness around either.”

With a background in marketing and PR, Monica also felt she had the skillset to help the Foundation continue building that awareness. While she’s responsible for marketing and community relations day-to-day, she joined the Foundation right as planning for the 10th Annual Ron’s Run for the Roses was in the final stretch. “I always say I sort of learned backward, seeing how everything runs and what makes it successful by just jumping in,” she explains. Monica began by helping pull together the auction items, which people and businesses donate to raise funds for the Foundation. What she says she saw from the start was an incredible passion from everyone involved. “There’s just a different kind of drive,” she says. “Everyone has their own experiences and reasons for being involved, and they bring their best talents together for a great cause.” What has also struck Monica over the years is that the relatively small Foundation is doing tremendous things. “When I first walked into the office, I was blown away by all the copies of the checks that line the walls and the amount of money we’ve given to research, education and patients,” she says. What Barbara Foley has done with her army of people is just incredible.” And that’s how Monica feels about everyone she works with. “I have close friends who have lost their own parents and relatives to pancreatic cancer, and while I have not been directly impacted by it, I am motivated every day by the people who have been and who volunteer and donate to the Foundation”
We Cannot Do It Without Our Volunteers Our volunteers are a tremendous resource for the Foundation. The Volunteers work tirelessly offering their time and talents. Our volunteers, Board of Directors, Foundation Officers, and Medical Advisory Board could spend their free time doing anything, and yet they chose what they believe in -the Foundation’s mission.
World Pancreatic Day Candlelight Vigil In the face of the unusual state of times in 2020, we were grateful to continue the annual tradition of holding a Candlelight Vigil on World Pancreatic Day to honor and remember those we have lost to, or are battling, pancreatic cancer. The cold weather did not tamper the mood of the gathered
Foundation staff and volunteers who could keep this tradition going- even during the pandemic. It was a heartfelt and emotional evening for all that attended. We look forward to gathering with more in attendance for the next candlelight vigil.

During these uncertain times, the Ron Foley Foundation has stayed focused on its mission to raise much needed funds for research, education, and direct aid to pancreatic cancer patients. Our unwavering commitment was only possible because of our incredible supporters, donors, and staff. Our staff adapted quickly and worked tirelessly to create an event that was safe and successful. Their vision and creativity brought our inaugural outdoor Park n’ Picnic event. The event was live streamed, allowing over 150 guests to attend, both in person and from afar. It was a perfect day to sit outside and reunite, to celebrate life, and to remember loved ones we have lost to pancreatic cancer and those

who are battling this dreadful disease. Guests had the opportunity to look at an impressive array of Mercedes, BMWs, and Mini Coopers, thanks to our Presenting Sponsor, New Country Motor Cars Group – thank you to Tim Parker for his continued friendship to the Foundation. Guests enjoyed gourmet picnic fare and cocktails with friends and family from the safe confines of their car. A large screen on the stage allowed attendees to watch the presentations and bid on auction items with Auctioneer and Master of Ceremonies, Joe Furey. The delightful afternoon was topped off with a serenade by our talented Honorary Chair, James Naughton.

Ron’s Run for the Roses, the Ron Foley Foundation’s signature event, has been held at Folly Farm in Simsbury, CT, since 2010. Originally the country’s premier Jersey dairy, the Patricelli family purchased the Farm in 1981. In addition to hosting a limited number of seasonal events each year, the family has built the Farm into a leading equestrian facility and full-service polo club and school. Today, Alison Patricelli oversees all aspects of the Farm’s business and has been instrumental in helping the Foundation grow Ron’s Run for the last several years. Then came 2020 and a pandemic that sent much of the world home for months. “Even before Barbara reached out to tell me they’d decided to cancel the Derby Day event, I’d been thinking about how we could bring Alison Patricelli people together in a safe way,” explains Alison. “I felt we all needed that kind of connection, and I didn’t want to see them cancel altogether.” So when Barbara called, Alison pitched the idea for what would eventually become the Park ‘n Picnic. “My vision was to hold a picnic-type event where we could all lay out our purple blankets and stay within our bubbles – but also be part of something bigger,” she says. The Foundation provided attendees with a picnic lunch and the opportunity to have beautifully curated picnic baskets delivered to anyone in the country. “People could purchase a basket for a pancreatic cancer patient, for instance, or someone in a nursing home who might have been feeling isolated because of COVID,” says Alison. She also proposed a virtual component so people across the US and even the world could Zoom in or share video messages. The first Park ‘n Picnic was held in September of 2020 and was such a success that the Foundation kept the format for 2021’s Ron’s Run as the pandemic lingered. “I think the event really brought the focus back to pancreatic cancer – on helping people and building community.” And that, says Alison, is what she loves most about the Foundation. “It was started with a singular purpose in mind, and they’ve stuck to it,” she says. “Barbara is a force of nature who is willing to think outside the box to keep things moving forward. I’ve enjoyed our partnership and the opportunity to connect our beautiful property to philanthropy in such a meaningful way.”

In 2010, Bob Thuot underwent gastric bypass surgery. Doctors no longer practice this particular procedure because it negatively impacted the gallbladder – something Bob knows only too well. “Years after the surgery, I was having these bouts where I had no energy and couldn’t get out of bed,” he explains. At first, he was just taking Tylenol, which did seem to help. Then one weekend, after taking the Tylenol and resting as usual – while he felt better on Sunday, his symptoms were back by Monday morning. “It had never recurred that quickly before,” says Bob. So he went to the emergency room and subsequently had emergency gallbladder surgery. It was during the surgery that doctors saw something suspicious, so they took samples for biopsy.
Bob Thuot, 3-time recipient “I was diagnosed with Stage 4 pancreatic cancer,” Bob says. “My liver of Ron’s Rescue Fund was also involved, but I never had any pain. If it hadn’t been for the gallbladder surgery, they would never have found it.” Bob started chemotherapy right away and joined a clinical trial that eventually ended due to adverse side effects. The treatment left him feeling run down and short of breath, making it difficult to work. That’s when his social worker at UMASS Medical Center in Worcester told him about the Ron Foley Foundation and Ron’s Rescue. “I was looking for any help I could get, and the Foundation really came through for me,” says Bob. “The process was very straightforward, and the payments came so quickly I was astounded.” In July 2021, he received his third check from Ron’s Rescue and has used the money to pay outstanding bills and repair his car. “Everyone has been so wonderful,” he says. “Anyone going through what I have should talk to their social workers and seek out whatever support groups they can.” Bob’s last scans showed that the tumor, which was initially about the size of a quarter, had not grown.

Ron’s Run for the Roses 2021 What an exciting day! Over 200 in-person and virtual guests attended the 12th Annual Ron’s Run for the Roses at the beautiful Folly Farm Equestrian Center in Simsbury, CT. It became a national and international event with virtual guests joining us from Hawaii, California, Idaho, Virginia, Washington DC, Germany, and Fiji. The event was co-hosted by Joe Furey and Honorary Chair Dennis House from Channel 8 news. It was a perfect day to sit outside and view the showstopping cars provided by our Presenting Sponsor, New Country Motor Cars Group. Guests enjoyed gourmet picnic fare while placing bids on the
exciting silent and live auction items that the Auction Committee worked tirelessly on. Jeff Probst, from the show Survivor, surprised the guests with a video to offer his support and auction off his own Survivor hat and parchment paper to, “Vote Off Pancreatic Cancer!” His video helped provide more excitement and garnered more donations for Ron’s Rescue Fund. The beautiful event was a culmination of hard work, determination, joy, dedication, and passion by our sponsors, volunteers, vendors, and donors. Their unwavering support of the Foundation’s mission is second to none. The memorable event ended with a viewing of the 147th running of the Kentucky Derby.

Empathy Lee Tremback’s career in social work began in her 20s, eventually leading her to be the director of social work at St. Mary’s Hospital in Waterbury, CT. When that position was eliminated in the mid-90s, she went on to accept a job as the bone marrow transplant social worker for UCONN Health Center. “It was a great fit, and I’ve been in oncology social work pretty much ever since,” says Lee. Today Lee works for the Smilow Cancer Hospital at Saint Francis Hospital in Hartford. Here, she met Marge DiGalbo, a long-time volunteer for the Ron Foley Foundation, who was a case manager at Saint Francis at the time. “At some point through our connection, I became aware of Ron’s Rescue – in which Marge has always been heavily involved,” she explains. “It wasn’t long before I started submitting grants for patients.” Where submitting grants to other foundations can be cumbersome
and require a lot of paperwork, Lee says Ron’s Rescue makes it easy. “They’re just wonderful. It’s a brief application, and typically within a week, my patients have a check in hand,” she says. The funds cover everything from a broken refrigerator to rent and utilities to furniture like a lift recliner to make patients more comfortable.

Over the years, Lee has referred somewhere around 40 patients to Ron’s Rescue. “The staff is very responsive and truly show a great deal of empathy,” she says. “Empathy is different than sympathy – it’s about more than feeling bad for someone, but really trying to understand their suffering and do something about it. That’s my role, and that’s how I see the staff and volunteers of the Ron Foley Foundation.”
It’s that empathy that drives Lee to guide patients with pancreatic cancer to try to live as they would with any chronic illness. “While there is no cure yet, I tell my patients to think of it as just a new stressor in life. The key is to pay more attention to adding good things into their lives to balance out the stress and to keep meaning and enjoyment in their lives.” Part of doing that is asking for help, which is why the Ron Foley Foundation – and particularly Ron’s Rescue – is so important.

Our pride in the Foundation’s accomplishments is completely overshadowed by our conviction that we have only just begun. There is an urgent need to improve the chances of survival for the 57,500 individuals diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2020. This devastating disease has caused over 47,000 deaths in United States in 2020.

Inspired Gail Gretzmacher first got involved with the Ron Foley Foundation when she was working in IT at Travelers. “I’ve since retired, but when I was there, I was a member of the Employee Club and served on the Volunteer Services Committee,” she says. “My friend, Tony Sisti, who has always been heavily involved with the Foundation, reached out to me and told me about what they were doing.” Of course, Gail had heard of Ron Foley as he was a well-known and much-loved executive at Travelers but didn’t know about his pancreatic cancer. “I just couldn’t believe how devastating a cancer it is and how little awareness there is about it,” she says. “And when I met Barbara Foley, she was just so inspirational – I knew this was an organization I wanted to support.” Gail began as a volunteer at Ron’s Run for the Roses at Folly Farm in Simsbury several
years ago. Over the years, she’s also helped out at other events, reached out to businesses for auction item donations and assisted in the office. What Gail really liked from the start, however, was how the Foundation not only raised money for research – but also that they had a targeted fund for people with pancreatic cancer struggling financially. “So in addition to supporting the Foundation by bidding on auction items, I started donating directly to Ron’s Rescue at the end of each year,” she says. “I like that the money I give will help someone with their mortgage or car payment or whatever they need.” And then came COVID-19, which led her to increase her gift significantly in 2020. “I just had this sense that the Foundation in general and Ron’s Rescue in particular probably needed extra funding last year,” Gail explains. That’s because the pandemic caused
