Our Story

Ronald Edwards Foley

Ron’s Rescue Fund Established in memory of Ron Foley, who lost his battle with pancreatic cancer in October of 2005, the Foundation bearing his name is dedicated to promoting early detection and, ultimately, finding a cure for the disease through ongoing research.

Inspiration for the first fundraising event – a Kentucky Derby party in 2009 – came when those closest to Ron in life felt they could harness the generosity of his spirit to raise funds for pancreatic cancer research. The day’s contributions were donated to pancreatic cancer research in Ron’s memory, and a tradition was born.

Encouraged by the success of that initial Derby Day gathering, and with the support of family, friends and dedicated volunteers, Ron’s widow, Barbara Foley, formed the Ron Foley Foundation.

Today, this 501(c)(3) charitable organization sponsors a series of annual events to build awareness and raise funds for research, education and patient assistance.

While we recognize that we can’t win the fight against pancreatic cancer without raising funds for research and awareness, we also know that patients and their families are under tremendous financial pressure.

Imagine receiving the devastating news that you, your spouse or another loved one may have pancreatic cancer. Your world is changed forever.

You quickly become engulfed in the medical system. Financial resources are soon stretched to the limit. You may even find you’ve exhausted your savings, and the stress becomes unbearable.

That’s why we created Ron’s Rescue Fund to provide short-term financial assistance to cover expenses for essential needs that will otherwise go unmet.

Our Mission Fund medical research leading to improved diagnosis, more effective treatment and a cure for pancreatic cancer.

Promote public awareness of pancreatic cancer through education.

Reduce human suffering caused by pancreatic cancer by giving direct financial aid to pancreatic cancer patients.

A LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Friends, As I think about this Annual Report for our fiscal year ending June 30, 2020, it’s clear that it reflects the efforts of the Foundation for two distinct periods; one before and another after the onset of the Coronavirus pandemic.

From September through December 2019, the Foundation was busy pursuing our traditional fundraising and awareness events. In this Report, you will learn about Team RFF in the Hartford Marathon, Rock Away Pancreatic Cancer, hosted by our wonderful friends at New Country Motor Cars Group, and the many awareness activities held in November of 2019, Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month. I’m so proud of the energy of our incredible volunteers and so very grateful to our supporters.

In December and January, planning began in earnest for our 12th Annual Ron’s Run for the Roses. Many of our loyal sponsors responded positively; vendors were confirmed and volunteers were activated. In short, we were off to the races.

I will never forget the moment I realized guests and volunteers would be put at grave risk if we proceeded with Ron’s Run. The world was changing by the second, and we needed to adapt quickly. Our last in-person volunteer meeting at our office was in mid-February.

By March, we, like the rest of the world, began our relationship with ZOOM. It was horrifying to read about our friends at Nuvance, Hartford HealthCare, St. Francis and Yale working around the clock to help COVID-19 patients, with inadequate resources and little downtime.

I’ll be forever grateful to all first responders and essential workers who persevered at their own risk.

Our inability to hold Ron’s Run 2020 led to a substantial financial loss for the year.

However, to understand the reported net loss of approximately $165,000 for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2020, we must recognize that this loss treats as a deduction, our payment of $35,000 to Yale and $85,000 to Nuvance, fulfilling our outstanding obligations to fund research grants approved in prior years. I’m also proud to report that not one Ron’s Rescue patient was turned away.

In this year’s Annual Report, you will read how our dedicated staff learned to produce, direct and execute our first all-virtual event, Ron’s Run Reset. It marked the day of the original 12th Annual Ron’s Run for the Roses, and served as a platform to announce our next big fundraiser, Park ‘n Picnic for Pancreatic Cancer, held in September 2020 (which was successful beyond our hopes.)

While we at the Foundation learned much about how to adapt, pancreatic cancer patients were forced to adapt in unthinkable ways. They had to receive treatments and surgery while alone; lose hope provided by clinical trials that were cancelled; and were robbed of the ability to visit or see loved ones, all due to COVID-19.

These new realities for pancreatic cancer patients only strengthened the Foundation’s resolve to carry on with our mission and to seek new ways to do so in the coming year.

Striking Out Pancreatic Cancer It was a perfect summer night on July 25, 2019 for “Ron Foley Foundation Day” at Dunkin’ Donuts Park, cheering on the Hartford Yard Goats and raising awareness of pancreatic cancer. Hannah DeMarco, Barbara Foley’s granddaughter, threw out the first pitch on behalf of the Foundation. With the generosity of 65 supporters who attended the game and the Hartford Yard Goats, we raised more than $750.

Ask the Experts Since 2013, the Foundation has been the proud sponsor of twentythree “Ask the Experts” seminars on pancreatic cancer with support from physicians from Hartford HealthCare. These free, two-hour sessions have drawn in more than 450 patients, caregivers, family members and medical staff. Each session provides educational information about the disease, including signs, symptoms, treatments, and a ray of hope.

In November 2019, and during Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month, two seminars were held at Hartford HealthCare’s Glastonbury and Wethersfield offices with more than 30 people attending across both. In June 2020, and with the power of web conferencing, we had one of our highest attended sessions with 40 people joining from all over Connecticut and as far away as Florida.

Thank you to Barbara Foley for making a donation of $10,750 from the sale of her late husband’s 2005 Mercedes-Benz CL55 AMG. Driving this high-performance coupe was one of Ron’s joys before he passed away in October 2005. Along with Barbara’s donation, Bring a Trailer, the auction firm that handled the sale in September 2019, donated its buyer’s fee of more than $1,000 to the Foundation.

Outrun Pancreatic Cancer For the fifth year in a row, the Ron Foley Foundation was honored to be an official charity of the Eversource Hartford Marathon on October 14, 2019. We want to thank the ten Team RFF runners who ran on behalf of the Foundation and their donors who helped us raise more than $11,000 during the event. Thank you to the twenty volunteers cheering on the runners and those at Charity Village manning the information table.

A Gift of Giving Over the years, we have had many people ask their friends to donate money to the Foundation in lieu of receiving birthday presents. One example is Michael Hinman, grandson of Barbara Foley, from Dedham, Massachusetts. When he celebrated his 8th birthday in June 2019, he asked his buddies to make a donation in memory of his grandfather Ron. With this special request, Michael raised $230.

And in Tampa, Florida, Amanda Laffin celebrated her May 2020 birthday in COVID-style with just her boyfriend Alan Weiss, their two pets and one good friend. “I wanted people to donate (to the Ron Foley Foundation) this year instead of giving me birthday gifts because I knew how hard of a year it would be for those battling pancreatic cancer. My mom, Debbie Laffin (a Ron’s Rescue recipient), always LOVED parties - it didn’t matter if she was hosting them or just attending, they were always special. I wanted to make sure that someone else had a special day and that my family, Michael Hinman friends and I could help make that happen for them this year.” (center) with friends Amanda used the Facebook fundraising platform to raise $745.

Leading Edge Research On July 15, 2019 the Ron Foley Foundation’s Board of Directors approved the funding of a grant for $80,000 to Dr. Richard Frank, Director of Cancer Research, and his team at Nuvance Health (formerly Western Connecticut Health Network). The Foundation’s support will enable Dr. Frank to complete analysis of ncRNA from extracellular vesicles and create goals that build on these findings in pursuit of a new prognostic or diagnostic biomarker for pancreatic cancer. Gratifying

Nancy Wall – a fourth-grade teacher in Avon, Connecticut – was in a curriculum meeting with her colleagues on December 1, 2014, when she got a text from her twin sister, Jane. Jane’s husband, Willie, had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, which had spread to his liver.

“I burst into tears,” says Nancy – adding that she knew she had to do something. “I’d been wanting to volunteer for a while, but also knew it needed to be something meaningful that I could enjoy after a long day of teaching,” she explains. That’s when she remembered her good friend, Diane Gent, who worked with the Ron Foley Foundation. “When I reached out, Diane invited me to the Foundation’s next meeting.”

The meetings then were held in the basement of Chris Gent’s office building, a Board Member and executive officer, and Diane’s husband. “I was greeted so warmly by everyone, and I felt an immediate connection,” Nancy recalls.

“Most people were there because the disease had impacted someone in their family – it was just so nice to be with others who knew the severity of it.”

That was six years ago, and in that time, Nancy has pretty much done it all. She’s helped set up and breakdown events, stuffed envelopes, organized auction items for Ron’s Run for the Roses – the Foundation’s Kentucky Derby Day fundraising event – and more. “One of my daughters lives on Block Island. I usually solicit donations from local businesses there so I can put together a package for the auction that covers the ferry to and from the island, a hotel stay and a night out for two people.” Nancy has also been instrumental in rounding up students from area high schools to volunteer at Ron’s Run. “I really will do whatever is needed to keep things moving forward,” she says. “Barbara and everyone at the Foundation are so appreciative – they inspire you to want to do more for them.”

Willie passed away three months to the day of his diagnosis. “We have a very close family, and his absence has left a huge hole. I am so thankful I began working with the Foundation while he was still alive,” says Nancy.

One of the cornerstones of the Foundation’s success is the commitment and loyalty of our volunteer team. Their dedication, creativity, time and energy are paramount to all that we do. From soliciting auction items and finding sponsors for our events, to raising money and running for Team RFF in the Eversource Hartford Marathon races, to delivering Ron’s Rescue bags to hospitals for pancreatic cancer patients, to brainstorming ideas at volunteer meetings — no task is ever missed with our volunteer team.

To celebrate our 2019 achievements and thank all of the wonderful people who helped us, a volunteer holiday party and viewing of “Christmas on the Rocks” at TheaterWorks in Hartford was a delightful way to end the year.

Dawn Burke

Throughout their life together, one of Dawn and Lenny Burke’s favorite quotes was “Success is not a destination, it is a journey. The value of that journey is not determined by where you are when you’ve completed the journey, but by what you become along the way.” Lenny says this is something Dawn instilled in their children – Kevin, Kelly, Matthew and Molly – and in everyone whose life she touched. “Her life and career revolved around contributing to other people’s success,” Lenny says.

“Whether raising money for good works or trying to put people in a position of confidence by giving them hope and inspiration – Dawn always made sure you knew how special you were.” Generating fun and laughter were always her key ingredients to that, he adds.

In June 2018, Dawn was diagnosed with Stage 4 pancreatic cancer. During the course of her battle, Kelly began researching how she could contribute to pancreatic cancer research and awareness. She found Project Purple – a Connecticut-based non-profit that, like the Ron Foley Foundation, is focused on raising funds to support patients and research. Kelly joined the organization’s running team, raising $17,000 from donations supporting

“Barbara is such a beautiful person inside and out. She was amazingly supportive,” says Lenny. “It’s truly unique how she can engage and touch people’s hearts. You just want to help.” Kevin and Matt have since gotten involved in the Foundation and Lenny says he’s committed for life.

“I want to see better results – earlier diagnosis – in my lifetime, and I think they are really on the right track.”

“For my mom, it was never a question of whether or not she would get better – it was when. And she always said when she did, she was going to raise money for pancreatic cancer. She loved the Ron Foley Foundation because it was West Hartford-based and that a backyard event grew into a truly spectacular fundraiser, Ron’s Run for the Roses. She really wanted to be a part of it to help change the outcome for those diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. It’s the way she lived her life, giving back and always trying to make a difference in the lives of others, and I want to follow in her legacy.”

“Dawn was so excited to see all the good her kids were doing and the money being raised – because it’s what she did her whole life,” says Lenny. When she passed in December of 2018, Barbara Foley reached out to Lenny, attending Dawn’s Celebration of Life. “Barbara stepped forward at the most devastating time of my life. I was deeply touched to the core by her heartfelt caring,” he says. Since then, friends have continued making thousands of dollars in donations in Dawn’s memory to Project Purple as well as the Ron Foley Foundation.

“My mom’s legacy lives in her charitable work and her love of life. When she was diagnosed, I knew it was serious because her father passed from the same disease.

I found myself wanting to do something more, to honor who she was, because she always gave so much of herself to other people. Raising money to fight the disease that took her to help others extend their lives is the way in which I try to honor her memory.”

Grateful

Melissa Faulkner is a Clinical Research Coordinator at UMass Medical School in Worcester. “My first introduction to pancreatic cancer was 18 years ago when my mother was diagnosed,” she explains.

Then, four years ago, after working at UMass for nearly two decades, Melissa had the opportunity to join Dr. Giles Whalen, the Chief of Surgical Oncology at UMass Memorial, enrolling patients into a human tissue study. “One of our main focuses is Brian Thorin pancreatic cancer, which I had been wanting to devote some time to.” About a year later, Melissa was asked to see a patient – Brian Thorin. As it turned out, they knew one another. Brian had been a security guard on the UMass Medical Center city campus when Melissa worked for the ambulance service.

Melissa has been advocating for Brian and other patients ever since and has been by his side through his Whipple procedure in January 2019, which Dr. James Lindberg performed, to his diagnosis of metastatic disease later the same year. “The oncologist estimated he had four to six months to live,” says Melissa. “Instead, he’s still here – and has beaten COVID on top of that. He’s one tough guy.”

First diagnosed in July of 2018, Brian acknowledges that it has been challenging but hasn’t all been negative. “I’ve been fortunate to have the Ron Foley Foundation in my life, for example.” Since being introduced to the Foundation by Melissa, Brian and his wife have received two gifts from Ron’s Rescue Fund, which was established to help cancer patients and their families to cover short-term expenses for essential needs. This is critical to Brian now that his income is going completely toward The Meadows, the skilled nursing facility where he lives. “I’m also very blessed to have an extended family,” says Brian. For him, that means his wife and his two children, her six children, their six grandchildren, Melissa, Dr. Lindberg, and so many more.

“Ron’s Rescue and the Foundation have been just astronomical in supporting our patients,” says Melissa. “We’re thrilled to have this partnership and hope that we continue to work together for these patients – but also help the Foundation grow.”

We Are Growing Over the past two years, there has been a tremendous increase in the number of pancreatic cancer patients receiving Ron’s Rescue grants in Massachusetts. The first Massachusetts Ron’s Rescue applicant came to us in 2016 and between 2016 and 2018, we only had four applicants. Through our World Pancreatic Cancer Coalition partnerships and direct outreach to some Massachusetts hospitals and cancer centers, we funded 16 applicants in 2019 — like Brian Thorin mentioned above — and 11 applicants in 2020.

Thank you to social workers at Dana Farber Cancer Institute in the Greater Boston area, St. Anne’s Hospital in Fall River, Southcoast Health Center for Cancer in Fairhaven and Fall River, and UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester for helping their pancreatic cancer patients learn about the Ron’s Rescue program.

One of our major goals is to reach out to all hospitals and cancer centers within New England, New York and New Jersey so that we may help many more pancreatic cancer patients in need.

Paying It Forward Thank you to Kelly Sheehan, Program Manager and social worker at St. Anne’s Hospital in Fall River, for securing a $500 donation from their parent company, Steward Health Care, to the Foundation. Kelly noted, “On behalf of Saint Anne’s Hospital, I was happy to nominate the Ron Foley Foundation for financial funding, as you were quick to support our cancer patients soon after we learned of your organization”.

Committed ConnectiCare, a leading health plan based in and serving Connecticut, has been sponsoring Ron’s Run for the Roses – the Ron Foley Foundation’s premier fundraising event – since 2011. Kim Kann, Senior Director of Public Relations and Corporate Communications for the company, says they decided to become a sponsor because they felt the Foundation’s work is in step with their own mission, which is to create healthier futures for our customers and community. “After learning about what they did when they approached us with the sponsorship opportunity combined with the fact that they are a Connecticut-based organization, made it clear this was a good fit for us,” Kim explains.

Being involved with the Foundation was also meaningful to the group, who’d lost their colleague Donna Stevenson to pancreatic cancer. “We really liked the idea of using our sponsorship ad to honor Donna’s memory,” says Kim. “She just had the most amazing smile and made you happy every time you saw her.” Then, a few years later, the team tragically lost another colleague to pancreatic cancer – Terri Bellefeuille and added her name to their sponsorship ad. “Terri was always willing to help anyone,” Kim says. “They were both too young, and we miss them so much.”

Over the years, ConnectiCare has continued to support the Foundation in various ways, including this year’s Park ‘n Picnic that replaced Ron’s Run due to concerns over COVID-19. “They have a great team and are very passionate about what they do,” says Kim. “Most people probably know them for Ron’s Run but might not know the breadth of what the Foundation does.” This includes what they offer to patients and caregivers, she says. “Their website alone is an incredible resource to people facing pancreatic cancer, whether their own or a loved one’s.”

To date, ConnectiCare has donated more than $21,000 in memory of Donna and Terri. Kim says she and her colleagues and the entire company are very happy to be involved with the Foundation and support all they do.

What is Pancreatic Cancer?

Pancreatic cancer is the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States.

Pancreatic cancer begins when abnormal cells within the pancreas grow out of control and form a

tumor. The pancreas is a gland in the abdomen that lies behind the stomach and in front of the spine, with two main functions: digestion and blood sugar regulation.

Know the symptoms It is important to remember that symptoms can be caused by more common things. They can also be caused by conditions such as pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas), gallstones, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or hepatitis (inflammation of the liver).

Dreams Really Do Come True Imagine attending the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs in spectacular style, viewing “Run for the Roses,” live and in person. The Foundation was thrilled to have the opportunity to raffle off this bucket-list item in 2019. Worth more than $21,000, our VIP package included Clubhouse seats at the 146th Kentucky Derby & Oaks, accommodations at the historic Brown Hotel, gourmet dining experiences, a personal bourbon tasting tour, and private car transportation while in Louisville.

This was truly a dream come true win for Lisa Richardson from North Carolina when she received the call from Tim Parker, Vice President of New Country Motor Cars Group, that she was the lucky winner. Due to COVID, Lisa and her husband Eddie are planning to attend the Kentucky Derby in 2021.

Thank you to the more than 200 people who bought raffle tickets, helping the Foundation raise more than $30,000 in ticket sales.

Reaching Out In A Virtual World

Ron’s Reset Virtual Happy Hour, May 2, 2020 As the reality of the pandemic settled in early in the year, it became evident our major and beloved Kentucky Derby day fundraiser, Ron’s Run for the Roses, would not be viable on the first Saturday of May.

delicious cocktail was enjoyed by many as they dined on take-out from their favorite restaurants, including southern fare prepared by Russell’s Creative Global Cuisine in West Hartford.

Like so many non-profit organizations around the world, the Foundation staff and volunteers learned how to adapt, transform, pivot and challenge ourselves to create an event that would still mark the day of Ron’s Run for the Roses. We learned that with our new friend “Zoom”, we could go from our beautiful white tent at Folly Farm to the virtual world and into our supporters’ living rooms. On May 2, we launched Ron’s Run Reset Virtual Happy Hour, embracing our traditional day and join as a community to honor those who have survived pancreatic cancer and remember those no longer with us.

Joining Joe was our dear friend Tim Parker, Vice President of New Country Motor Cars Group and this year’s Presenting Sponsor for the eighth year in a row. Tim had the opportunity to interview Lisa Richardson, our VIP Kentucky Derby raffle winner, tell a few jokes and help Joe with our Ron’s Rescue fundraising appeal.

Leading our virtual event was Joe Furey, Foundation board member and WTNH/Channel 8’s co-chief meteorologist. As Ron’s Run for the Roses emcee for many years, Joe created an evening of fun, excitement and surprises for the supporters joining from all over the country. To begin the celebration, Erin Conway, bartender from Plan B Burger Bar - Simsbury, taught us all how to prepare the perfect mint julep. This

One of our biggest blessings during these uncertain times was the opportunity to get to know Tony Award winning actor and director James Naughton, who had signed on to be our 2020 Ron’s Run for the Roses honorary chair. Along with Joe and Tim, James helped us design and plan Ron’s Run Reset, meeting with us virtually over several weeks leading up to the event. James was personally touched by pancreatic cancer with the loss of his dear wife, Pamela, from the disease in 2013.

During the event, Barbara Foley talked with James to learn more about his time growing up in West Hartford, meeting Pamela while both of them attended Conard and Hall High schools, and their journey with Pamela’s illness. James continued

on with a discussion with Dr. Richard Frank from Nuvance Health, who was Pamela’s oncologist. Dr. Frank also leads important pancreatic cancer research that the Tribute to Pamela/The Naughton Family and the Ron Foley Foundation are proud to support.1 To wrap up the evening, James provided a little light entertainment singing a few of his favorite songs and fashion stylist Debbie Wright selected our best hat contest winner, Kathy Viani.

Though we were unable to host Ron’s Run for the Roses in 2020, we were honored to sustain a majority of our event sponsors whose donations were received during our fiscal year 2019/2020. The Foundation is so very grateful to our sponsors for their continued support during such challenging times. In a year that so many organizations were financially challenged, our sponsors continued their support and commitment to the work that we are doing to find a cure for pancreatic cancer and make a difference for those struggling with the disease.

Thanks to all who participated in Ron’s Reset, we raised more than $12,000 for our Ron’s Rescue Fund to provide aid to pancreatic cancer patients in need.

THE POWER OF

PURPLE

There were splashes of purple in West Hartford in November as the town helped recognize Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month.

As part of World Pancreatic Cancer Day on November 21, 2019, the Foundation hosted a lighted vigil at Veteran’s Memorial Park in West Hartford Center to honor and remember individuals who battled pancreatic cancer as well as those who have lost the fight. We want to thank the more than 50 people who attended the vigil, lighting candles and speaking their loved one’s names.

Thank you to our friends at The Delamar West Hartford who once again put a purple glow to its water fountains. Inside the hotel, The Artisan Restaurant offered its guests a signature purple cocktail. With the proceeds from the sales of these delicious libations, the restaurant raised more than $600 for the Foundation during the month of November.

And once again, our beautiful Power of Purple banners were hung in the Center, as well as our huge banner on Aetna’s parking garage in Hartford. Thank you to all of the businesses who put a purple glow on their buildings and friends who hung their purple lights in their homes.

We were thrilled to have the Como Brothers, an incredibly talented musical duo from Long Island, join us again for our third annual Rock Away Pancreatic Cancer event on November 15, 2019. Hosted by New Country Motor Cars Group of Hartford in their Mercedes-Benz dealership showroom, more than 75 donors, friends and volunteers attended, helping us raise more than $4,000.
