Welcome!

Welcome Friends, Thank you all for being here today, both on-site and on-line. We so appreciate your attendance and your support. This may not be the traditional Ron’s Run for the Roses under our big white tent, but I think this just might be our most extraordinary event ever.

When the Foundation cancelled Ron’s Run last May, we had no idea of the challenges our world would face in the coming year. We had no idea of the lives that would be lost and the families that would be torn apart by COVID-19. And we had no idea that medical professionals and frontline workers would become our everyday heroes. Today, we tip our hats to remember and honor you all.

I am grateful to the researchers who worked around the clock to perfect multiple vaccines to protect us from the threat of COVID-19 and pray this effort will lead to medical breakthroughs in pancreatic cancer prevention, early detection, and a cure.

Today we take the time to remember that pancreatic cancer did not go away.

During 2020, over 57,000 people were diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and over 47,000 lost their lives to the disease. Many lifesaving clinical trials were halted and treatments and palliative care were administered to patients with little or no family support.

In preparation for today’s event, our tireless volunteers have created a Kentucky Derby Day gala that everyone could enjoy, at all comfort levels.

I hope that you have a wonderful afternoon, seeing friends, on-screen or inperson, and embrace this moment to join us in the fight against pancreatic cancer.

Please bid high on the many exciting auction items and please give generously to Ron’s Rescue to help pancreatic cancer patients in need.

Imagine receiving the devastating diagnosis that you, your spouse or other family member may have pancreatic cancer.

Your world is forever changed.

You hear the words, “pancreatic cancer” and it sounds like “the end of the world.” This devastating diagnosis brings a lot of emotional and financial stress to you and your family. Watching your loved one fight the hardest battle of their life, while balancing bill paying and other types of planning - transportation, child care, counseling, estate planning, and on and on – it seems as though there are not enough hours in the day, not enough money in the bank to assist you in this tremendously hard time.

That’s why the RON’S RESCUE FUND was created - to lend a helping hand.

Established in 2012, the Ron’s Rescue Fund is the caring “heart” of the Ron Foley Foundation. Donations to this restricted fund are dedicated solely to providing financial assistance to patients fighting pancreatic cancer and to help alleviate any financial burdens. Over the past eight years, Ron’s Rescue has provided over $315,000 in financial assistance to pancreatic cancer patients not only in Connecticut, but throughout all of New England, New York, New Jersey, Ohio and Texas.

2021 Honorary Chair Dennis House Chief Political Anchor WTNH Channel 8 .

Named one of the “12 Most Influential People” by Hartford Magazine, Dennis House is one of the most experienced and highly regarded broadcast journalists in Connecticut. A native New Englander and Emmy award-winning journalist, Dennis’ work over the years led to many changes in state government and campaigns and his interviews were picked up by local and national media organizations including the Wall Street Journal, the Washington Post, the Politico, MSNBC and others.

Dennis served as the moderator of numerous political debates and has emceed countless charity and business events. In 2017, he was honored for his work in his field and community, by being inducted into the prestigious National Academy of Arts and Sciences Silver Circle.

Dennis has traveled extensively to cover breaking news events and find the Connecticut angle for the viewers at home. On September 11, 2001, he reported live from lower Manhattan talking with Connecticut survivors of the terrorist attack on New York. Eight and a half years earlier, he reported live from the World Trade Center after it was attacked the first time by terrorists using a truck bomb.

Among Dennis’ other live reports from the scene: the funeral of Pope John Paul II, the O.J. Simpson trial, a World Series, a presidential inauguration, conventions, a Final Four, along with many storms and natural disasters. He’s walked through wildfires, hurricanes, blizzards and floods.

Dennis was born and raised in Norwood, Massachusetts and graduated from Xaverian Brothers High School. He holds a bachelor’s degree in foreign affairs from Assumption College. He lives in Hartford with his wife Kara and their two children. In his spare time Dennis enjoys coaching his son’s football and basketball teams, spending time with his family, playing golf, racquetball, painting, going to the beach and researching his Italian heritage. He also tackles home improvement projects and loves to tinker with his antique Buick.

He describes serving the people of Connecticut as “absolutely awesome,” saying, “I love journalism and I love television. I feel very blessed to be in a field that allows me to meet so many people, both here in Connecticut and beyond.”

Joe Furey has been delivering weather forecasts to residents of Southern New England on both radio and TV for the last 37 years. He is currently Co-Chief Meteorologist for News 8 WTNH as well as I-Heart and WZBG Radio Meteorologist.

After graduating from Villanova University in 1983, Joe spent more than four years at Western Connecticut State University as a graduate student and then assistant director of the weather center under the direction of Dr. Mel Goldstein.

Joe became Director of the New England Weather Service in the early 1990s doing weather forecasts for major corporations like Northeast Utilities while doing the FOX61 News, and WFSB CH 3. He did the morning drive weather on 3 great radio stations for 28 years; WTIC News Talk 1080, 96.5 TIC-FM and Lite 100.5 WRCH. Currently, Joe can be seen weeknights on News 8 WTNH Joe is married with four daughters.

He joins us today to honor the memory of his wife Tracy’s cousin, Debbie Laffin, who lost her battle with pancreatic cancer in 2012. Debbie was our first Ron’s Rescue recipient.

Mint Julep Cocktail Recipe The Mint Julep has been the traditional beverage of Churchill Downs and the Kentucky Derby for nearly a century. In 1939, it actually became the event’s official drink. Racetrack managers realized that visitors were stealing the water glasses that juleps were served in, and decided to start selling the glasses as souvenirs. Today, the julep is embedded in Derby ceremony itself: at the Winner’s Party, the governor of Kentucky toasts to the victor with a sterling silver julep cup.

Each year, almost 120,000 Mint Juleps are served over the two-day period of Kentucky Oaks and Kentucky Derby weekend at Churchill Downs Racetrack. These drinks appear to be a most innocuous concoction, but have a potent kick, as anyone who has tasted them for the first time can testify. The drink should be sipped slowly and not tossed off at a gulp! When to actually add mint leaves into the Julep drink is debated by Southerners. Arguments rage over its proper usage, some voting for muddling the leaves with water and sugar, others for infusing them in the syrup, and a third faction maintaining that a sprig as garnish should suffice.

INGREDIENTS

2 oz. Bulleit Bourbon 1/2 oz. Simple Syrup 3 Fresh Mint Leaves Crushed Ice INSTRUCTIONS

Express the essential oils in the mint and rub them inside the glass.

To the same glass, add simple syrup, bourbon, and crushed ice. Stir.

Garnish with more ice and fresh mint.
