2022 ANNUAL REPORT AND HONOR ROLL
Our Story
Established in memory of Ron Foley, who lost his battle with pancreatic cancer in October of 2005, the Foundation bearing his name is dedicated to promoting early detection and, ultimately, finding a cure for the disease through ongoing research.
Inspiration for the first fundraising event – a Kentucky Derby party in 2009 – came when those closest to Ron in life felt they could harness the generosity of his spirit to raise funds for pancreatic cancer research. The day’s contributions were donated to pancreatic cancer research in Ron’s memory, and a tradition was born.
Encouraged by the success of that initial Derby Day gathering, and with the support of family, friends and dedicated volunteers, Ron’s widow, Barbara Foley, formed the Ron Foley Foundation. Today, this 501(c)(3) charitable organization sponsors a series of annual events to build awareness and raise funds for research, education and patient assistance.
Ron’s Rescue Fund
While we recognize that we can’t win the fight against pancreatic cancer without raising funds for research and awareness, we also know that patients and their families are under tremendous financial pressure.
Imagine receiving the devastating news that you, your spouse or another loved one may have pancreatic cancer. Your world is changed forever. You quickly become engulfed in the medical system. Financial resources are soon stretched to the limit. You may even find you’ve exhausted your savings, and the stress becomes unbearable.
That’s why we created Ron’s Rescue Fund to provide short-term financial assistance to cover expenses for essential needs that will otherwise go unmet.
Our Mission
Fund medical research leading to improved diagnosis, more effective treatment and a cure for pancreatic cancer.
Promote public awareness of pancreatic cancer through education.
Reduce human suffering caused by pancreatic cancer by giving direct financial aid to pancreatic cancer patients.

A LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
Dear Friends,
Your support of the Ron Foley Foundation during 2022 has been nothing short of remarkable. The COVID-19 pandemic brought new, unforeseen challenges and like much of the world, we continue to recover. During these difficult times, the Foundation has been hard at work adapting our events to ensure the health and safety of our growing community. I am proud to say that the Ron Foley Foundation remains a strong leader in the fight against pancreatic cancer and continues to support research and patients battling this terrible disease.
Throughout this past year, we have reintroduced many of our in-person events, such as the Ron’s Run for the Roses Kentucky Derby gala. I am so grateful for our friends, family, and community who joined us both in-person and virtually on May 7th. The support and generosity each participant offered has made it possible to grow and develop new events throughout this year, such as Battle of the Bars.
In November 2021, we launched the first Ron Foley Foundation Battle of the Bars contest between our friends at Artisan West Hartford and Artisan Southport. This event was a terrific success, raising over $8,000. I would like to congratulate our winners at Artisan Southport for their support of this amazing event. The Foundation looks forward to future Battle of Bars events for the years to come. In addition, I would like to give a special thank you to our Eversource
Hartford Marathon team, led by Molly Burke and Jennifer Loughran, for competing in the 2021 Hartford Marathon. This incredible team raised over $25,000 for our patient support program, Ron’s Rescue.
I would also like to recognize my granddaughter, Hannah DeMarco, for raising over $1,200 at the Newington High School Powder Puff football game earlier this year on behalf of the Foundation. Hannah’s passion for helping others has inspired all of us at the Ron Foley Foundation and her leadership reminds us that anyone can make a difference.
As you can see, our progress over the last year would not have been possible without the incredible Ron Foley Foundation volunteers. Their enthusiasm and devotion have been extraordinary.
In addition to these new initiatives, the Ron Foley Foundation has been rapidly growing its patient financial aid program - Ron’s Rescue. I am proud to announce that in 2022, Ron’s Rescue did not turn down a single patient request. In fact, this amazing program has provided assistance to more than 300 patients.
During the last year, the Ron Foley Foundation has also provided funding for new and exciting pancreatic cancer research at Yale University School of Medicine. We believe scientific research is the key to understanding and ultimately stopping this deadly disease. We are hopeful that Yale’s research,
led by Drs. Anup Sharma and Nita Ahuja, will advance pancreatic cancer detection methods, and encourage additional funding for future pancreatic cancer research.
In closing, we should note a bit of encouraging news about pancreatic cancer. The 5-year survival rate has gradually increased to 11%, up from 5% when Ron died in 2005. Despite this improvement, pancreatic cancer remains the 3rd deadliest cancer in the United States with the highest mortality rate. It is expected to become the 2nd deadliest cancer by 2030. A standard early detection method remains elusive and the number of those diagnosed with the disease each year is on the rise. This is what motivates all of us at the Ron Foley Foundation to work harder each year.
Please accept my sincerest thanks for joining us in the fight against pancreatic cancer. Together we are making a difference!
Barbara Foley President

MAKING A
Ask the Experts
Difference
The Ron Foley Foundation sponsored two “Ask the Experts” webinar events with the Hartford HealthCare Cancer Institute during this fiscal year. The first webinar was held in November with presenters Dr. Lindsay Ann Bliss, Board Certified in General Surgery; and Dr. Vaibhav Mehendiratta, Board Certified in Gastroentereology & Internal Medicine. The webinar was titled ‘What You Need to Know About Pancreatic Cancer.’ The second webinar was held in June with presenters Dr. Osama Siddique, Board Certified in Gastroenterology; and our returning expert, Dr Lindsay Bliss, Board Certified in General Surgery. That webinar was entitled ‘An Integrated Approach to Care.’ The healthcare providers offered insight into the disease, as well as hopeful information on new research and innovations. A live Q&A followed the presentations with each of the experts.
Girl Power
Whether it’s softball in the spring or powderpuff football in the fall, the girls outdid themselves raising awareness of pancreatic cancer through their high school sports. Our hats are off to these talented and supportive young ladies and their coaches.
Striking Out Pancreatic Cancer
Ron Foley Foundation Day at Dunkin Donuts Park in Hartford was a great night to bring friends and volunteers together to cheer on the Yard Goats. The first pitch was thrown out by our own volunteer, Aaron Goldenthal. The Foundation raised $630 thanks to the generosity of our enthusiastic supporters. Thank you to the Yard Goats staff for allowing the Foundation to bring awareness of pancreatic cancer on the jumbotron to all in attendance. Let’s strike out Pancreatic Cancer!
The WEHA Bear Fair
The WEHA Bear Fair is a community-wide FUNdraiser, sponsored by local businesses and individuals. Each sponsor selected an artist to design its bear, as well as a nonprofit organization to benefit from proceeds raised by visitors to the fair. The Ron Foley Foundation would like to thank its sponsor, Westfield Bank, and the creative artist, Anne Gogh.

The Ron Foley Foundation was once again proud to be an official charity of the Eversource Hartford Marathon Foundation. Under the team leadership of Jennifer Loughran and Molly Burke, Team RFF raised more funds than ever. A total of $25,000 was raised for Ron’s Rescue Fund. Thanks to the virtual component offered to runners, we had representation not only in Hartford but also in Boston, Notre Dame, IN; Fairfax, VA; Washington DC; and Parmelan Peak, France. The Team RFF spirit building started a week before the Marathon with a pasta dinner hosted by Judie and Rick Goldenthal and donated by the New England Pasta Company. Thank you to these runners and fundraisers: Stephanie Berman, Molly Burke, Kelly Burzacchi, Kerry Hanson, Phil Kenyon, Cathy Lou King, Jennifer Loughran, Allison Lowe, and Carolyn McKenna. Together we can outrun pancreatic cancer!
RON’S RESCUE FUND
Ron’s Rescue Fund was created to provide short-term financial aid to cover some essential needs of pancreatic cancer patients. The fund was started in 2012 and through the end of this fiscal year, Ron’s Rescue has assisted over 300 patients in financial need. American Cancer Society estimates 62,000 men and women in the United States will be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2022. We are here to help those
patients in financial need throughout New England, New York, and New Jersey.
Many attendees of the 13th Annual RRR heard the plea of one of the fund recipients to please dig deep into their pockets and hearts and donate to Ron Rescue’s Fund. Paddles were raised high with donations pouring in to support the fund. In less than a half hour, over $31,000 was raised
to help keep the lights on, homes heated, and food on the table for patients who so often are unable to work due to their illness and the side effects of their medical treatment.

Our pride in the Foundation’s accomplishments is completely overshadowed by our conviction that we have only just begun!
Candlelight Vigil
It was only fitting to honor family and those still fighting the disease on World Pancreatic Cancer Day at our 3rd Annual Candlelight Vigil of Hope. This beautiful and heartwarming tribute included the reading of names of those touched by pancreatic cancer. The event was sponsored by Prime Healthcare PC and presided over by our own Lenny Burke, who ended the evening with an inspiring rendition of
School of Rock Benefit Brunch
Thank you to Roux CT and School of Rock West Hartford for sponsoring this great event during pancreatic cancer awareness month, to support the Ron Foley Foundation’s mission in the fight against pancreatic cancer. Proceeds from the event were donated to the Foundation.
Donuts Drive Donations
For the second year in a row Donut Crazy has supported the Ron Foley Foundation during November by creating a special purple donut. Proceeds from their sales were donated to the Foundation. Donut Crazy ran out of purple donuts every day thanks to PeoplesBank buying so many donuts for their staff and customers. Not only purple – but delicious!

delicious “Purple Orchid” cocktail made with Hendrick’s Gin raised over $8,200 for the Ron Foley Foundation. Artisan Southport is proudly displaying the “Hendrick’s Cup” at their bar. A big thank you also goes to Jamie Montesi with William Grant & Sons for donating the handsome Hendrick’s Cup and the Hendrick’s gin used in this fundraiser.
We were thrilled to be a part of the BK & Co virtual fashion show, with proceeds going to the Foundation. Thank you to Barbara and Karen for selecting gorgeous outfits for us to model and for your continued support.
Thank You, J. McLaughlin
Thank you to J. McLaughlin in West Hartford for supporting the Ron Foley Foundation by offering a discount to their customers and a portion of the proceeds benefiting the Foundation. A big thanks to Marissa and her staff for their continued support fighting pancreatic cancer.
Gratitude
As a meteorologist for WTNH News 8 covering New Haven and Hartford, CT, Joe Furey is used to making predictions about the weather. But nothing could have prepared him for the storm that resulted when his wife’s cousin, Debbie, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer nearly seven years ago while in her mid-40s. “In one short year she went from being a busy, vibrant mother of two, to needing my wife, Tracy’s, help to perform even the most basic of tasks and passing away almost a year to the day of her diagnosis,” he shares.
While the family did their best to remain hopeful, they all knew the odds weren’t in Debbie’s favor. And because her youngest daughter was only about five at the time, Debbie wanted to make sure the last memories her little girl would have of her were filled with happiness and laughter, not the illness ravaging her body. According to Joe, Tracy left no stone unturned when it came to her cousin’s care,
and she tirelessly sought out whatever resources were available to support Debbie in her fight. When she came across the Ron Foley Foundation, Joe said she could tell immediately it was a special place.
“The Foundation was there for Debbie in so many ways, but it was their last gift that really made an impression on me,” recalls Joe. “They organized and paid for a trip to Disney World, creating an experience Debbie and her girls would never forget.” When Debbie passed away a few months after the trip, her loved ones were overjoyed by the dozens and dozens of smiling Disney photos displayed at her wake.
“I couldn’t be more grateful. It was a gift we could never truly repay, but I decided right then and there I would spend the rest of my life trying.” Now, year after year, Joe has been the MC “extraordinaire” and auctioneer for the Ron’s Run for the Roses event, helping not only to raise money to support
Compassion
As an oncology social worker specializing in GI cancers at Smilow Cancer Hospital in New Haven, Laura Donnelly meets her patients and their families at an extremely difficult time in their lives.
Every day Laura spends time with her patients, learning about who they are and the things they love and finding ways and resources to support them on their medical journey. And while all cancer diagnoses can be unsettling and frightening, pancreatic cancer is particularly devastating, which is why Laura is especially grateful for her department’s long-standing relationship with the Ron Foley Foundation, sharing, “As a social worker I have a list of organizations at my disposal to help guide and support my patients, but there are definitely those which stand out, and the Ron Foley Foundation is one of them.”
As one can imagine, finding out they have a cancer with an 11% five-year
survival rate is a shocking revelation. In addition to concerns about their health, the financial burden can take its toll, even with insurance coverage. But when Laura connects her patients to the Ron Foley Foundation, she can see how it changes their perspective.
“Being able to offer them a resource dedicated to their support, one that makes them feel so cared for and listens to their more practical concerns, it makes a world of difference to their stress level,” she explains.
“And whenever I reach out to the Foundation, without fail, they are easy to get in touch with, responsive, overwhelmingly generous both financially and compassionately, and completely present in their desire to make an impact on someone’s life.”
While Laura is committed to giving every one of her patients 150%, there is only so much she can do for the individuals in her care. Having a place like the Ron Foley Foundation
patients, but also to raise awareness, especially as the incidence of pancreatic cancer is on the rise. “There are many organizations that lend their support to research and discovering more effective treatments, but what the Ron Foley Foundation provides is so personal and has a direct and immediate impact on these families. I know how much their support meant to us and I want to be a part of doing that for others. Whatever the Foundation needs, I’ll be there.”
step in on such a personal level is a game-changer. “They have a real understanding and appreciation for what my patients are going through, and as a result the impact they have on their lives, and the lives of their loved ones, is truly remarkable. It’s a blessing to work with an organization that is as personally invested in each of my patients as I am, because they deserve nothing less.”

Yale
University Research: Pancreatic Cancer Rates in African Americans
Earlier this year, the Ron Foley Foundation awarded Anup Sharma PhD and Dr. Nita Ahuja MD at Yale University School of Medicine with a $50,000 grant to research pancreatic cancer in African Americans. Pancreatic cancer incidence and mortality rates are significantly higher among African Americans when compared to all other ethnic and racial groups. While pancreatic cancer survival rates have significantly improved since 2005, African Americans have been notably unresponsive to existing treatments. African Americans are 50% more likely to develop pancreatic cancer and 37% more likely to die from this disease. “[African Americans] are not responding to pancreatic cancer treatment and [the] research has been very poorly funded…Our goal [with this research] is to bridge the gap of biological consequences in African Americans.”
According to Sharma, the genetic profiles of African Americans and Caucasians are considerably different, yet there is little knowledge of how these genetic differences are implicated in pancreatic cancer. As such, Dr. Sharma and his team are studying the epigenetic basis of pancreatic cancer among African Americans.
Epigenetics describes changes in gene expression caused by behavioral and environmental factors. In other words, epigenetics is the process of switching genes on and off. Fortunately, epigenetic changes are reversible, including those seen in cancer. Therapeutics successfully targeting these changes would be a huge development for treating stage I and II pancreatic cancer in African Americans. “Epigenetics
gives more flexibility to come up with a reprogrammable strategy.” Understanding epigenetics will make it possible to convert cancer cells back to a normal state.
In the long-term, understanding the epigenetic profiles of African Americans will advance prognostic biomarkers for pancreatic cancer. Given the extreme aggressiveness of late-stage pancreatic cancer, Dr. Sharma is eager to develop effective screening methods for African Americans. “It is much more likely to identify early stage cellular damage, which is why we are emphasizing so much on early-stage detection and screening.”
Lack of patient data has severely limited researchers’ ability to holistically understand pancreatic cancer. The grant award to Dr. Sharma and Dr. Ahuja has made it possible to send African American patient samples for epigenetic sequencing, a highly accurate and affordable genomics tool. Sequencing of these patient samples will provide researchers with data critical to improve African American
pancreatic cancer detection methods and treatments.
Funding for pancreatic cancer research is rare, and the financial support provided by the Ron Foley Foundation allows researchers to develop the next generation of pancreatic cancer detection methods and treatments. Dr. Sharma and Dr. Ahuja’s study will build a strong foundation for pancreatic cancer research in the years to come.
Dr. Sharma, Dr. Ahuja, and the Ron Foley Foundation encourage African Americans to get screened for pancreatic cancer at Yale New Haven Hospital. Access to information about your health reduces your risk of developing this terrible disease and may save your life.

Hope
As the largest radiology practice group in Connecticut, Jefferson Radiology prides itself on providing a level of diagnostic and therapeutic radiology expertise unparalleled in the region. But sometimes those services result in difficult news for their patients – especially those with a pancreatic cancer diagnosis. This is why partnering with the Ron Foley Foundation since 2012 as both a generous supporter and a Ron’s Run for the Roses event sponsor has been especially gratifying.
“A pancreatic cancer diagnosis is one of the worst things a family can face, and the Ron Foley Foundation gives these patients hope. Knowing support is available and that the Foundation will be by their side to help them live life to the fullest, it has such a dramatic impact on a patient’s outlook,” explains Caroline Leger, Jefferson Radiology’s Marketing Director. “We love working with organizations that are as committed to making a difference as we are.”
Though Jefferson Radiology’s altruism extends to over fifty charities, Caroline is quick to acknowledge the Foundation’s unique ability to find creative and engaging ways to bring people together for a worthwhile cause. They truly know how to elevate the experience. After each Run for the Roses, I hear from our radiologists how impressed they are with not
Passion
When Mike Zaskey, President and Owner of Zasco Productions, first worked with the Ron Foley Foundation over ten years ago, their Ron’s Run for the Roses event only required a few TVs, a PowerPoint presentation, and some basic setup assistance. As the Foundation grew, it relied on Mike’s expertise and support to ensure each successive event was bigger and better than the last, ultimately incorporating a large LED wall screen and utilizing a full array of audio and visual capabilities. Even covid didn’t stop Zasco or the Foundation for long, with Mike and his team helping to create a drive-in version of the event that was as safe as it was successful.
“Working with the Ron Foley Foundation is definitely a highlight for myself and my team,” shares Mike. “The level of passion we encounter from every single person involved in their event is unparalleled. Yes, we are

only the event itself but the sense of community, enthusiasm, and support it engenders. They know they are part of something that is making a difference in people’s lives in a very direct and personal way.
During his pancreatic cancer battle, Ron Foley was a patient of Jefferson Radiology. After his passing they were honored to help Barbara in her quest to bring more awareness to such an awful disease and provide support and hope to those affected by it. According to Caroline, “I know the enormous amount of work, dedication and love involved in everything the Foundation does. I am so grateful for the opportunity to be a part of their extraordinary generosity to others. Some things just make us bigger than ourselves and supporting the Ron Foley Foundation is one of them.”
there to do a job, but we can’t help but get caught up in the energy all around us. These are people who are going above and beyond to help others and you can see their heart in everything they do.”
As someone who works with quite a few non-profits, Mike is always impressed by the Foundation’s keen understanding of how important it is to deliver a quality event. “They recognize the importance of giving their supporters a fun time to thank them for their generosity. They don’t see obstacles, only opportunities for how they can make things better every year, and in turn, help more people. They are tremendously intelligent and thoughtful in the way they approach everything, and it really makes a difference.”
Mike is grateful for the opportunity to lend his support to such a worthwhile

cause and to an organization that knows how to get things done, saying “I am truly honored the Foundation has trusted me all these years with one of their most important fundraisers. As our relationship has grown, so has my admiration not only for what they do, but the way they do it. I look forward to being a partner in their mission for many years to come.”

Our volunteers are a tremendous resource for the Foundation. Without our volunteers, we would not be able to organize and run such successful fundraising events, like Ron’s Run for the Roses. Our event committees work tirelessly to help the Foundation by offering their time and talents. Not only are many of our programs run by volunteers, but our entire Board of Directors, Foundation officers, and Medical Advisory Board are comprised of volunteers. We are grateful to our incredible volunteers for their hard-work, creativity and dedication. Together we ARE all making a difference.
Kindness
As an employee of Traveler’s Insurance Company, Annette Landers was immersed in a culture of giving back and she enjoyed taking part in many of the company’s volunteer opportunities. So, when one of her co-workers recruited Annette to help a small non-profit that had been created in honor of one of Traveler’s own, she enthusiastically lent her support. Thus, her long-standing relationship with the Ron Foley Foundation was born.
“My first year I was assigned to the Ron’s Run for the Roses silent auction, and I did whatever they needed me to do. And then each year after that I learned more and more, absorbing as much as I could because I was so blown away by everything they were doing. I wanted to be a part of it all!” Now, in addition to working on the auction, Annette helps with everything from stuffing envelopes to mailing out the all-important patient support packages to assisting with other events the Foundation is involved in, such as the Hartford Marathon – and of course, recruiting her own set of volunteers (including her sister Charlene!) to be part of a mission that means so much to her.
“The Ron Foley Foundation touches people in such a special way, it’s like one big family helping other members of our family and spreading kindness wherever they go,” says Annette. She noted that even during the pandemic and the additional challenges it presented, the Foundation found ways to be there for those who needed them. For example, converting their annual Ron’s Run for the Roses Kentucky Derby Gala into a successful drive-in event. “That’s what family does, they find a way to make things happen for the people they care about.”
According to Annette, the Foundation’s founder, Barbara Foley, has the biggest heart in the world, and her positive energy permeates every event, every sponsor, every volunteer. “It’s just a wonderful organization filled with wonderful people doing wonderful things, and the friendships I’ve experienced along the way are the cherry on top. The Ron Foley Foundation isn’t just changing the lives of the people they help; it changes the lives of everyone involved. Who wouldn’t want to be a part of that?”

Ron’s Run for the Roses 2022
13th Annual Ron’s Run for the Roses on May 7, 2022, in Simsbury, Connecticut
Our 13th Annual Ron’s Run for the Roses was a spectacular event and definitely LUCKY 13th!! The positive energy and passion for our cause were certainly felt under the tent despite the cold and windy weather. It had been 3 years since our traditional Ron’s Run for the Roses, but through the perseverance of our volunteers, staff, and vendors, it turned out to be one of our most memorable Ron’s Run for the Roses yet! The Foundation’s deepest gratitude goes to the wonderful team for its creativity, adaptability,
kindness and dedication. A big thank you to our Presenting Sponsor, New Country Motor Car Group, and to our Oaks Room Sponsor, Hartford HealthCare. The event would not have been such a success without our Master of Ceremony, Joe Furey, and our Honorary Chair, Dr. Andrew Salner. We are so grateful for their continued support. Paddles were raised, and raised often, and the Foundation raised over $250,000! It was a spectacular event, ending with a viewing of the 148th running of the Kentucky Derby.
