Role Models

Chuck Weisenbach R’79, President A role model is generally considered to be someone who influences another person(s) through their actions and words. There are positive role models who influence others in a good way through their actions, words or thoughts. There also are negative role models, those we learn from by not following their actions, words or thoughts. Positive role models are invaluable, some may say a necessity, in our lifelong quest to be the best version of ourselves we can be. I am confident that our students cite members of our faculty and staff as significant, positive role models in their lives.

I recall having positive role models in my life as early as first grade and continue to have positive role models in my life six decades later. Some role models have remained constant during that time. Others have come and gone. Regardless, the positive impact these people have had and continue to have on my personal and professional lives is one of my life’s greatest blessings. In this article, I share a very small sample of the many, many significant, positive role models in my life and the lessons I took from them. Before or after reading this article, I encourage you to reflect on who are and/or have been positive role models in your life. If they are still living, it is always a nice gesture to drop them a note or send them an email thanking them for the positive impact they have had on your life.

Role models in my early years Mom and Dad - The importance of faith and family, along with the value found in a strong work ethic and just “showing up” every day, even when in the midst of life’s challenges. Grandma Weisenbach - Faith, prayer and the importance of the Eucharist Shirley Dreyer (3rd grade teacher) - What “joyful” looks like and also the first person I recall having a profound love of music. Sr. Marie Bernadine (principal at St. Jude) - How being intimidating can be a good thing, and, later in life, why running a tight ship is important to the success of a school. Bob Kirkhoff, Bob Robisch, Vic Sahm (7-8th grade CYO basketball coaches) - Hard work, teamwork, sacrifice and being well-prepared. Teen and young adult years Bob Tully (high school religion teacher) - The power and joy found in being positive, seeing the positive in others and giving thanks to God every day! Rita Koors (high school chemistry teacher) - This was the first class that seriously challenged me academically, and in which studying was required for success. It was my first taste of rigor! John Wirtz (high school basketball and baseball coach) - What “hard-nosed” looks like when competing and why the “little things” are so important if you want your team to succeed.

Fr. Wilmoth (high school chaplain, friend) - Made religion real for me; taught me why it was essential to have Jesus in my life daily; I no longer “had” to go to Mass; instead, I “wanted” to go to Mass.

Marvin & Luella Feldman (successful business people, lifelong friends) - How the power of positive thinking (Zig Ziglar) when mixed with hard work and good people can lead to achieving success at the highest levels! How to be the best in the business while remaining humble and hungry.

Professional Life Bill Kuntz (fellow educator, championship coach, friend) - What championship coaching consists of relationships, trust, love, preparation and attention to detail.

Personal, professional and faith life for the past 43 years Jane Weisenbach (wife) - Her positive impact on my life is endless, varied and the most treasured part of my life.

Elaine Jerrell (fellow educator)- What goes into being a master teacher and what that looks like in the classroom.

I reiterate, this is just a tiny fraction of the positive role models in my life. I am forever grateful for each and every one of the countless people God has placed in my life who have helped me grow in my personal, professional and faith lives.

Joe Hollowell (fellow educator, my boss for 31 years, friend) - The art of being a visionary leader and how to make those visions a reality!

Don’t ever underestimate the impact you are having on the lives of others as a role model in their life.

Kathy Schembra (fellow educator, championship coach, friend) - Unbridled passion and the impact it can have on young people!

Join me in thanking God for all the positive role models He has placed in our lives! We could not have accomplished much good without them.

Dan Elsener (former boss as Superintendent of Catholic Schools for Archdiocese of Indianapolis, friend) Leadership, what it is and what it isn’t. Accountability, do your job well or we will find someone who will. One of the best nuggets of wisdom was his refrain, “What gets measured, gets better!”

NEWLY ORDAINED PRIESTS On June 6, Archbishop Charles C. Thompson ordained three Royals, deacons Sam Hansen R'18, Timothy Khuishing R'17 and Khaing Thu R'18 to the priesthood at Saints Peter and Paul Cathedral. Surrounded by family and friends, these alumni stepped into their holy vocations. We caught up with Father Sam, Father Timothy and Father Khaing to ask how Roncalli shaped the shepherds they have become today.

For all three, Roncalli was a vital incubator for their faith. Fr. Timothy recalls that "being at Roncalli helped me to stay connected to my Catholic faith during an important time in my life," noting that the school's "Catholic identity strengthened my relationship with God." Fr. Khaing agrees, noting that "the many opportunities for prayer, daily Mass, the presence of the clergy on campus and the retreats helped me to grow in prayer and listen to God's call more clearly." Fr. Sam points to the community culture, describing Roncalli as "a place where the faith was taught, friendship and hospitality were shown and with an infectious school spirit that

really made me feel like I was part of the church." Our new priests also credited the educators who guided their steps. Fr. Sam shares, "I owe my vocation in particular to Mr. Milroy, who focused his English classes on parts of personal faith experience that we often don’t talk about, Mrs. Hibner for being a joyful example of the Catholic faith as she taught it and especially Mr. Striby for all that he did in running the Roncalli retreat program." He adds that with so many supportive teachers, "it’s hard to pick." Fr. Khaing found inspiration in the daily witness of Mr. Ratliff, Mr. Shelburn and Mr. Brown. "I saw them living their own vocation faithfully through their conduct and their manner of prayer," he explains, adding that they always encouraged him to become the man God called him to be. For Fr. Timothy, a single introduction changed everything: "Mr. Traylor introduced me to Fr. Eric Augenstein, who is the vocations director for the Archdiocese of Indianapolis. Looking back, that

introduction played an important role in helping me move forward, which led me to the priesthood."

that fact. That means going to Mass every chance we get and intentionally preparing to receive Jesus.

Now looking back, these priests offer powerful guidance for current Royals.

• Self-control and self-denial might be the greatest battles of our younger years. This is part of why we find sports and arts so exciting. Saying no to both sin and luxury sets our hearts on fire for God.

Fr. Timothy advises students "not to be afraid to live out their Catholic faith," urging them to "embrace the opportunities to grow spiritually... and trust that He has a plan for your life. Prayer is the source." Fr. Khaing highlights the campus support system, noting that "Roncalli offers many opportunities for you to grow in faith." He reminds students that faculty are always there to help, so "do not be afraid to reach out, to trust in God and to persevere in faith and in academics." Finally, Fr. Sam leaves the student body with four practical pieces of advice: • God is in the Eucharist. Our lives will feel so much more true if we live by

• The fundamental fact about God is that He is merciful. We are here and we can experience joy because of His mercy. I especially encourage the sacrament of reconciliation as a place to encounter this. • Everywhere and at all times, live the fourth! The Last Time

Terese R. Carson, Hon’18, Vice President for Institutional Advancement This year has become a year of "lasts" as I prepare to retire in May 2027. The last Board of Directors meeting. The last Advancement Committee meeting. The last ROAR. The last Walkathon and Open House. The last donor visit. The last annual appeal. The last time I will walk across campus knowing I have a role to play in helping sustain the mission of this remarkable place - Roncalli High School. When I first began working in the Advancement Office in July 2002, I never imagined how deeply connected I would become to the life of the school. I thought my work would be about fundraising, events and stewardship. And while it has certainly been all of those things, it has also been about people. It has been about witnessing generosity in action. It has been about listening to alumni tell stories of teachers who changed their lives decades ago. It has been about meeting parents who sacrificed so their children could receive a Catholic education. It has been about seeing donors invest not only in buildings and programs but also in young people and their futures. As I move through my final year at Roncalli, each "last" arrives quietly. Sometimes I recognize it in the moment; other times, I realize afterward that a chapter has closed.

There is a bittersweetness to these moments. It is difficult to say goodbye to work that has been meaningful and to relationships that have enriched my life. Yet there is also gratitude. Gratitude for having been entrusted with a role that helped support the mission of Catholic education. Gratitude for colleagues who became friends. Gratitude for students whose enthusiasm and faith reminded me daily why our work matters. Working in advancement often happens behind the scenes. Success is measured in dollars raised, admissions of new students and projects completed. But the true impact is found in the lives touched along the way. Every gift represents someone's belief in the school's mission. Every dollar for tuition assistance represents an opportunity. Every campaign represents hope for the future. As I experience these final months, I find myself paying closer attention. I linger a little longer after meetings. I appreciate familiar faces. I take in the sounds of students in the hallways and the traditions that make this school unique. I am learning that endings invite us to notice what we may have taken for granted. Catholic education teaches us that every season has a purpose. There is a time to begin and a time to move on. While this school year marks the end

of my chapter at Roncalli, the mission and vision continues. New students will arrive. New alumni will graduate. New donors will answer the call to support future generations. And so, as I encounter each last event, last meeting and last milestone, I choose to view them not as endings alone but as reminders of how blessed I have been to be part of something larger than myself. When the final "last" arrives, I know I will leave with a heart full of gratitude— for the people, the mission and the privilege of serving this community. 15 ROYALS PERFORM OVER 400 HOURS OF SERVICE The Class of 2026 completed 54,551 community service hours during their four years at Roncalli. Roncalli asks its students to complete a minimum of 18 hours of service each semester. The members of the Class of 2026 have been completing service hours for the past four years, and many have "gone the extra mile" in serving the needs of others. A total of 76 seniors received their service cord, which signifies a student completing 50% more than the expected hours. Among that group, 15 students exceeded all expectations and clearly answered the call to "be Christ to others" by performing over 400 hours of service over the past four years. They will be honored with their name on a plaque that hangs in the school’s cafeteria and received their service cord worn at graduation. Those students are:

SENIOR REFLECTION Speaking before the Senior Mass on Monday, May 18, senior Madelyn Kitchens delivered a deeply personal reflection on how her four years as a student brought her closer to God. Looking beyond typical milestones, Madelyn offered a vulnerable look at how high school shapes the soul through both immense joy and unexpected suffering. Madelyn noted that her time at Roncalli was fundamentally defined by spiritual growth, highlighting morning adoration as a crucial anchor through the chaotic storm of high school life. However, the true test of her resilience arrived the summer before her junior year, when she was diagnosed with melanoma on her calf. The required surgeries completely sidelined her for the majority of her cross-country season. While not being able to run was a massive struggle, she explained that the experience taught her to surrender control, turn toward God and trust in a bigger plan. Madelyn emphasized that she did not walk through this valley alone, noting how her cross-country teammates stepped up to support her. Even now, facing the lingering anxiety of ongoing dermatologist check-ups, she spoke of finding God in the "little ways" through the people around her, recalling how an immediate text offering prayers from her retreat leader

instantly calmed her nerves during a fearful doctor's appointment. It wasn’t all hardships, though. Madelyn proudly celebrated an extraordinary senior year for the Class of 2026, highlighting major school milestones: the cross-country team clinching its first sectional title in school history, the show choir winning their first state championship and a thrilling trifecta of football, basketball and volleyball state games. As she prepares to head off to college, Madelyn admitted that leaving the place she has called home is bittersweet. From freezing time to enjoy a few more laughs with friends to visiting her mother, Cathy (Howard) Kitchens R'01, between class periods, her attachment to the school is profound. Yet, she leaves with a rock-solid foundation, concluding with a final charge to her classmates that no matter how far they go, Roncalli has prepared them with the knowledge that God SCAN FOR SPEECHES is always very present.

Congratulations to eight Roncalli Royals, Lexi Dunscomb, Lucy Hammerschmitt, Alana Hawkins, Vivie Hayes, Jillian Kruer, Thomas Mallers, Lydia Traylor and Anna Wagner, who have been accepted into the Leadership Johnson County Youth Leadership Academy. The youth leadership academy is a five-month program designed to bring together a select group of Johnson County high school students to learn more about their community and practice leadership skills in a fun learning environment. Each program day is designed to foster an opportunity for increased self-awareness, a better understanding of the local community and an opportunity to meet and network with peers from across Johnson County. Modeled after the Leadership Johnson County Signature Program, the Youth Leadership Academy will provide students with an extraordinary opportunity for in-depth leadership training from experts around the state. Youth Leadership Academy participants must attend an opening retreat in late July, attend four regularly scheduled classes throughout the year, attend and present at the graduation celebration and complete a community service project.

For the past 42 years, Gerard Striby, Hon'09, has faithfully served the Archdiocese of Indianapolis. He spent his first eight years at Scecina Memorial High School, followed by 34 years as a theology teacher at Roncalli High School. During his time in education, Gerard served as service coordinator and led numerous mission trips to Appalachia. In addition, he was the director of the

For 16 years, Mary Sheets worked in the guidance office as the registrar. What started out as a volunteer position, then became a temporary position, turned into 16 years of service to our students and staff. Mary said that the people in the guidance department then and now are the reason she stayed. We thank Gerard and Mary for their service and wish them a retirement filled with well-deserved rest and enjoyment.

CREWS RECEIVES WEST POINT APPOINTMENT In May, Roncalli was thrilled to announce that Caroline Crews R'26 accepted her appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point! Caroline is now beginning her journey as a cadet. She will graduate from boot camp on August 15 and enter the academy for her first semester.

The daughter of Hazel and John Crews and a member of Saints Francis & Clare of Assisi Catholic Church, Caroline received her nominations from Representative Jefferson Shreve and Senator Jim Banks. ARCHERY TEAM AT NATIONALS Following a stellar fifth-place finish at the state tournament, the Roncalli archery team traveled to the national competition in May. Competing against the top programs in the country, the Royals delivered their highest score in program history at the national event, placing 202nd out of 262 teams. The future looks incredibly bright for the program, led by standout performances from two freshmen on the national stage. Alandra Deardorf shot a personal best to finish in the top 5% nationwide, placing 131st out of 2,697 girls. This year, Roncalli proudly celebrates the 10th anniversary of the German American Partnership Program (GAPP) — a decade of fostering cultural understanding, lifelong friendships and authentic language learning. The story of GAPP at Roncalli began in 2016 when German teacher Joy Gieschen established a partnership with Rudolf-Hildebrand-Schule in Markkleeberg, Germany. Continued by Tabitha Zimmerman and Matthew Hurley R'12, the program is led today by Louise Hibner R'12. Thanks to administrative support from Chuck Weisenbach R'79 and Kevin Banich R'09, GAPP remains a cornerstone of Roncalli's global education. The reciprocal program allows students to serve as both hosts and guests. Each fall, German students travel to Indiana to live with Roncalli families and experience American school life. The following summer, Roncalli students travel to Germany, staying with those same families and attending school while exploring Markkleeberg, Leipzig and the surrounding region. Through this shared daily life, students gain firsthand cultural understanding, boost language confidence and build lifelong friendships. Participants quickly discover that the greatest lessons happen outside the classroom through everyday conversations and shared meals. GAPP alumna senior Mira Pacholski credits the experience with transforming her language skills. "Simple interactions, such as ordering food, having 'small talk' and introducing myself to others, helped me learn the most," Pacholski said. "Having a supportive host partner and family was so crucial."

"Before I left, I made sure to get their socials so I could talk to them after I got home," Jones said. "There may even be a future trip where we all meet up again." The impact extends far beyond the traveling students. Jamie Daming, whose daughters Grace R'25 and Madeline R'25 participated in the 2024-2025 exchange, noted the deeper cultural connection. "Participating in the GAPP exchange gave our family the unique experience of getting to know the more personal side of a different culture," Daming said. Mary Kay Bishop, mother of Ansley R'23 and Ellie R'26, agreed. "GAPP has helped our kids understand that peers their age across the world are not different as people," Bishop said. "It has led our kids to want to experience more cultures and travel the world." Coordinators on both sides also recognize its lasting value. Jacqueline Redlich, an English teacher managing the German side, said the program strengthens international ties. "It strengthens the understanding between our countries and creates meaningful connections that last far beyond the exchange itself," Redlich said. Hibner, Roncalli German teacher and GAPP coordinator, added that the exchange changes how students approach schoolwork. "Students participate differently in classroom learning knowing that they are working towards real, meaningful interactions with native speakers," Hibner said. "Helping students build language and life skills like problem-solving is incredibly rewarding." What began as a single school partnership has become a powerful bridge connecting languages, families and cultures. Here's to the next decade of curiosity, connection and global friendships!

Five state championship wins in a row! Not many high school teams can say they’ve won five state championships in a row, but the Roncalli boys volleyball team can! The season as a whole was a dominant one. The Royals went 33-3, and they did not lose a single match to an Indiana team. In the championship round, Roncalli defeated the Carmel Greyhounds in three sets to advance to the finals. In a rematch from last year’s finals, the Royals faced the Cathedral Irish. The Irish proved to be little match for the Royals, as Roncalli cruised to a straight-set victory, winning 25-21, 25-16 and 25-13 to complete the sweep. UPDATE MAGAZINE SUMMER 2026

It was an all-around great performance by the team, led by the 2026 Mel Young Award Winner (state tournament MVP) Xavier Lawrie R’26 and the IBVCA Coach of the Year Nick Jennings R’11. It was a week to remember for Coach Jennings. Between a championship victory and individual recognition, he took a moment to reflect on the accomplishments: “This is a special group of players and coaches, and I’m honored to be recognized with this award. In reality, it’s a reflection of the incredible staff and players we

have in this program. This is one of the most disciplined and hard-working teams I’ve coached in all my years, and our coaches deserve just as much credit for helping develop the game plans, practices and culture that made this season possible. This team found the perfect balance of focus and fun, trusted each other and fully bought into the system that led us to another championship. When people talk about the greatest teams in Roncalli history, this group deserves to be part of that conversation. Coaching at Roncalli has been a dream come true, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to create memories

It was another special season for the Roncalli boys track program, and the guys earned every bit of the success that came their way. Winning the conference championship was a direct result of their hard work and willingness to compete every day. Five Royals earned AllConference, including seniors Alex Beard, Jake Irwin, Anthony Litz and Dom Nelson and junior Will Lewis. Beard, Litz and fellow senior Andrew Woodruff were also recognized as Academic All-State, showing the same commitment in the classroom that they brought to the track. Nelson won a sectional championship in the shot put, while Litz and Lewis were selected as Indiana All-Stars. The Royals also saw several school records fall this season, with Litz setting a new mark in the 300-meter

hurdles (38.87), Beard breaking the 100-meter record (10.71) and the 4x200 relay team of Beard, Litz, seniors Owen Lewis and Cole Huff setting a new school record of 1:30.18. At the state level, Nelson qualified in the shot put, Beard qualified in the 200 meters and the 4x400 relay team of Beard, Huff, senior Alex Toth and O. Lewis earned a trip to the state finals. State Qualifier - Lydia Stahley The Lady Royals track and field team concluded their season with strong performances, demonstrating their ability to compete under pressure when it mattered most. The girls worked hard throughout the season and consistently delivered their best performances at the championship meets. Two Royals were conference champions this year, including freshman Lotanna Okeke in the 100-meter hurdles and junior Emilia Reutubuch in discus. Juniors Clara Kazmierzak, Tessa Mize and senior Ava Shirley all earned Academic All-State honors. Seniors Madelyn Kitchens and Reagan Turk, practice partners since grade school, ran the fastest 800-meter times on the team this season at sectionals. The pair finished just 0.02 seconds apart, clocking times of 2:28.65 and 2:28.67, respectively. The 4x400-meter relay team of freshmen Brooklyn Ahaus and Taylor Seibert, junior Alana Hawkins and sophomore Ellie Littell ran a season-best 4:15.03 at the highly competitive Marion County meet. Junior Caroline Schoettle recorded a personal-best throw of 34'10.25" in the shot put at regionals, earning a ribbon. The 4x800-meter relay team of Kitchens, senior Ximena Zarza-Diego, Littell and Turk posted their season-best time of 10:00.03 to qualify for the regional meet. Additional regional qualifiers included senior Shirley (1600m), junior Tessa Mize (3200m), sophomore Alex Dew

(100m), Okeke (100m hurdles), senior Becca Engel (long jump) and Kitchens (800m). Eight athletes earned spots on the Royals Top 5 List, either improving their standing or making their debut on the list. Okeke ran 15.36 in the 100-meter hurdles to become the second-fastest hurdler in school history. Two distance runners also improved their places on the all-time list. Mize moved to third alltime in the 1600 meters with a time of 5:16.43 and fourth all-time in the 3200 meters with a time of 11:24.52. Shirley also recorded a personal best of 5:25.37 in the 1600 meters. The 4x100-meter relay team of Dew, Seibert, sophomore Rosanna Spearing and Hawkins ran a season-best 50.37 at the regional meet, becoming the thirdfastest relay team in school history. In the high jump, senior Lydia Stahley qualified for the state meet once again and cleared a personal-best height of 5'4", moving her into third place on the Royals Top 5 List. This capped off her high school athletic career by completing a remarkable three-peat, qualifying for the state finals in all three of her sports— volleyball, basketball and track and field. Circle City Conference Champions The 2026 season was another strong year for Roncalli baseball, and winning a third straight Circle City Conference championship was a great way to cap it off. With the conference coming to an end, it means a little more to walk away as the final champions. A number of players were recognized for their performances this spring. Seniors Collin Ash and Luke Baker, along with juniors Gio Ardizzone, Ayden Hartman and Luke Roeder, were named All-Circle City Conference.

Ash, Baker and Ardizzone also earned First Team All-Marion County honors, while sophomore Dane Burton was named Honorable Mention All-Marion County. Collin Ash will also represent Roncalli in the Indiana All-Star Game

after being selected to the South team as an All-District Outfielder. The Royals finished the year with a 20-6 varsity record and a 14-8 JV record. The expectation in the program is to compete for championships every year, and the team is already looking forward to getting back to work for next season. SOFTBALL 2026 REVIEW Head Varsity Coach: David Lauck R’94

Assistant Varsity Coaches: Maria Poteet Maggie Mills Mallory Marsicek R’16 Alyssa Schoettle R’14 Lauren Dill R’18 The 2026 Roncalli softball team put together another outstanding season, finishing 20-6 and accomplishing two of its biggest goals: reaching the 20-win mark and bringing home the conference championship. The Royals proved they could compete with anyone, earning impressive regular-season victories over Avon, Carmel, Franklin Central, New Palestine, Plainfield and Westfield. While the postseason didn't end the way they had hoped, it doesn't take away from what this group accomplished throughout the year. The Royals were recognized with plenty of postseason honors. Seniors Elise Baker, Kayla Brewer and Bennie Leffler, along with junior Morgan Curtis, earned All-Marion County

and All-Conference recognition. Baker capped off an outstanding career by being named First Team All-State and was selected to represent the South in the SCAI All-Star Game. Leffler also earned All-State honors, being named 3rd Team All-State by SCAI.

The Lady Royals finished the 2026 season with a 10-15 record, but that number doesn't tell the whole story. The team played a tough schedule that included several state-ranked teams, and the girls competed hard every time they stepped on the court. Reaching double-digit wins against that level of competition is something to be proud of and gives the program a good foundation moving forward.

The record may not have been where they wanted it to be, but the team met the expectations set at the beginning of the season. What stood out most was the way the girls continued to fight. No matter the score or situation, they showed up ready to compete and never backed down. A couple of moments really stand out from this season. Seeing seniors Evie Eble and Sammie Kegerreis advance in the state tournament was a great reward for all the work they put in over the years. Another highlight was junior Lola Neitzke stepping up and clinching

a tight match against Heritage Christian in front of a big crowd. We're excited about where this program is headed. The Royal golf team had a solid year with some great highlights! The team that started three juniors and two sophomores finished second place five times, most of those losses were by just one shot. They also pulled off a big win in the North Central Invite, and the team achieved an important third place at sectionals to advance to regionals. Individually, junior Kolton Bertram won the Marion County championship with a round of 70 and followed it with a strong performance at regionals, missing a playoff for a spot in the state tournament by just one stroke. Junior Sam Eckhart shot 74 for a third place finish in the team’s sectional tournament. He also made the AllCounty team, shooting 73. Sophomore Jagger Rund moved into the third position in the lineup and produced many solid scores, most of which were in the upper 70s. Sophomore Jimmy Kessenich and junior Gabe Sulit both were able to shoot scores in the 70s at different times during the season. Seniors Alex Maled and Chuck Dugan

played important roles as leaders and glue guys! Coach Poole shared, “In the off-season, the team needs to understand that being a good team with everyone coming back is a responsibility. It is important to recognize where they are and what they can achieve in 2027! BOYS LACROSSE 2026 REVIEW Head Coach: AJ Ablog

The Roncalli boys lacrosse team had a bit of a rebuilding year, going 4-9 on the season. The team was young and inexperienced, but they learned a lot showing resilience and fight! Coach Ablog said, “The triple-overtime win against Columbus North is one of the most memorable moments from this season. They were a very seniorheavy team, who were much more athletic. With the mechanics and IQ that we brought to the match, we held Columbus to just four goals the entire game. Freshman Trevor Welt had 21 saves, a new Roncalli record, and our defense was led by junior captain Alfredo Rodriguez and senior Sam Dressman. After 45 minutes of overtime, senior Brendan Marack, wearing Roncalli's number 11 legacy

jersey, scored the game-winning goal. Passed down each year from one number 11 to the next, the jersey is reserved for the player who best represents the character, leadership and values of the program. To me, this game represents Brendan and Sam’s careers perfectly. Sam, our long stick midfielder, has been the workhorse of our team. He consistently caused turnovers and got the ball to our offense, sacrificing himself in 40-60yard sprints, while being swung on by metal sticks. He did this 30-50 times that game. He did not complain once. Brendan’s veteran presence kept our spirits up all season, and he consistently scored when we needed it. I think that game is just a full reflection of our team's character, highlighting the grit and servant leadership we take pride in.” With a young team, and four contributing freshmen this year, the future of the Royal Lacrosse program is very bright. GIRLS LACROSSE 2026 REVIEW Head Coach: TJ Marsh

Assistant Coaches: Lylian Iman R’22 Reagan Riddle Julia Gorski R’20 This season was the best overall season the Royals have had in the 10-year history of Roncalli girls lacrosse. From top to bottom, this group competed at a really high level, and they had more scorers, more assists and controlled the draw better than any team before them. Winning possessions the way they did completely changed the pace of the games, and it gave them a lot more opportunities offensively. The Royals also proved they could compete with strong programs. The Royals beat every sectional opponent, outside of the eventual sectional champion, and they were winning games by bigger margins than expected. The girls put in a ton of work throughout the season, and it showed every time they stepped on the field.

Coach Marsh stated, “What stands out most to me, though, is the way this team carried itself. These girls competed hard, treated people the right way and represented Roncalli with a lot of class. The chemistry on this team was special. One of the most exciting parts of the season was watching some of the newer players grow in confidence. Many came in unsure of themselves, but by the middle of the season, there was a palpable difference in their demeanor. The girls were playing fast, communicating, smiling and really becoming part of the team. The coaching staff loved seeing that growth, and it was one of the most rewarding parts of the year.

The Roncalli boys volleyball team just continues to win, win, win! The Royals won their 5th-consecutive state championship this year after going 33-3 on the season. They did not lose a match to an Indiana team all season, and only dropped one set to an Indiana school. The Royals secured their secondstraight Marion County tournament championship along the way to the state title. In the national rankings, the Royals reached as high as number three in the USA Today poll and number nine on MaxPreps. They held the number one ranking in the state all season long.

The Royals were led by senior captains Jack Hovanec, Xavier Lawrie, Noah Meyer and AJ Morris. All four athletes were named to the Circle City AllConference team and 1st team AllRegion. Lawrie also earned the Mel Young Award for his excellence in play and leadership, and he broke the school record for career kills with 1,032. He is the first Royal to ever break 1,000 career kills. Meyer broke the school digs record with 440 digs on the year. For the first time in school history, two Royals had over 500 assists with Morris having 549 and junior Brennan Pierle adding 550. Additional recognition went to these Royals for earning Academic All-State honors: seniors Charlie Coffman, Hovanec, Lawrie, Gavin Louthain, Meyer and Morris and juniors Mitchell Mader, Ben Pierce and Pierle. The Unified Track team had 44 amazing athletes this year, including 14 spectacular seniors. Sportsmanship, leadership, encouragement for teammates and determination were the foundation of the team. It was great to see friendships form and develop throughout the season, and it was common to see members of the Royal team making friends from other schools at the different meets.

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHTS

Dr. Kyle Stephenson ’03 and Bradley Stephenson ’05 For brothers Dr. Kyle Stephenson R’03 and Bradley Stephenson R’05, the path to a career in orthopedics began long before medical school or professional training—it started on the athletic fields of Roncalli High School. Both brothers were deeply involved in sports throughout their youth and their years at Roncalli. Kyle was a member of Roncalli’s 2002 state championship football team and continued his athletic career at the University of Indianapolis, where he played both football and baseball for four years. Bradley was part of Roncalli's state championship football teams in 2002, 2003 and 2004. “Sports gave us an appreciation for how the human body works,” Bradley explained. “Training, competition and even injuries sparked our interest in medicine and ultimately led us to orthopedics.”

That early passion guided each brother through years of education and training. Kyle attended medical school at the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in Bradenton, Florida, completed his residency through Michigan State University and pursued fellowship training at New England Baptist Hospital in Boston. Bradley earned his undergraduate degree from Indiana University before completing a second bachelor's degree in health sciences and a master’s degree in physician assistant studies. While their educational journeys took different paths, their shared vision for patient care eventually brought them

back together to establish Joint Health Center of Indiana. The brothers found common ground in their belief that healthcare should be personalized and proactive. Through countless conversations about medicine, faith, family and patient care, they recognized an opportunity to serve patients in a way they felt was often overlooked. “We've always believed that preventative care is better than sick care,” Kyle said. “Every patient is unique, and not everyone benefits from the same treatment plan.” That philosophy became the foundation for their work together. Inspired by a shared commitment to helping patients improve mobility and quality of life, they built a practice centered on providing individualized care and exploring innovative treatment options for patients who may not yet be ready for surgery. Their approach focuses on what they call “the gap”—patients who have exhausted conservative treatments but are not prepared for more invasive surgical procedures. By helping patients understand the full range of available options, they aim to support long-term health and function while empowering individuals to make informed decisions about their care. Throughout their careers, both Kyle and Bradley have remained grateful for the values instilled during their time at Roncalli. The discipline, teamwork, faith and commitment to service they learned as students continue to influence their professional and personal lives today. As alumni, the Stephenson brothers represent the lasting impact of a Roncalli education— combining faith, knowledge, service and leadership to make a difference in the lives of others. For Kyle and Bradley, the journey from state championship athletes to healthcare professionals has come full circle. What began on Roncalli's playing fields has grown into a shared mission of helping others stay active, healthy and engaged in the lives they love.

For us, Roncalli is more than just a high school; it is the heart of the southside Catholic community. The high standards for academics, athletics, and citizenship expected of Roncalli High School students have propelled its graduates to wondrous things great and small. The teachers, staff and coaches of Roncalli have dedicated their careers not only to pushing their students to reach their potential but also to passing on the Catholic faith to generations of young people. Members of Roncalli’s 1976 varsity baseball team, the program’s first sectional champions, were honored Friday, May 1, at the Roncalli vs. Perry Meridian varsity baseball game. The 1976 team secured the school’s first sectional title with a 2-1 victory against Perry Meridian. Junior Paul Dodson R'77 pitched a complete game, limiting the Falcons to three hits. The Rebels clinched the win in the seventh inning when senior Ed Perry R'76 delivered a walkoff double, scoring senior Dan Lutgring R'76. Team members gathered at the Kennedy Memorial Pavilion for a reunion that included refreshments, camaraderie and the presentation of commemorative

baseball hats. In a spirited pre-game moment, the Roncalli baseball team formed a tunnel to cheer on the players as they were introduced.

Ahead of the commencement ceremonies for the Class of 2026, Roncalli welcomed the Golden Guard Class of 1976, who graduated 50 years ago. The alumni enjoyed a catered breakfast and were presented with a Golden Guard pin and a mini-diploma, which allows free admission to athletic events and fine arts performances hosted at Roncalli.

Michael Eagan R'77 received the Ball State University College of Architecture Distinguished Alumni Award for his notable career achievements as an architect and liturgical consultant. Michael is an AIA and AFRAA professional who earned his Bachelor of Architecture from Ball State University in 1982. He has worked in alignment with his professional mission to lead ecclesiastical communities in achieving their vision, to create meaningful environments and spaces that inspire worship, fellowship and

education and to offer guidance and counsel to religious leaders as they pursue noble and appropriate aspirations. He has been recognized through multiple design and service awards, affirming the quality of his renovations and designs of ecclesiastical structures. Michael serves as principal and director of faith-based design at Browning Day.

Dr. Chris Browning R'94 was named Optometrist of the Year by the Indiana Optometric Association, a prestigious honor recognizing his outstanding contributions to patient care and the optometry profession.

Christina Erazmus R'01, the head girls volleyball coach at Roncalli, was named Coach of the Year at the 2026 Indiana High School Sports Awards, following a season in which she led the Royals to back-to-back state championships.

Dean Stahley R'02 and Maria (Watness) Stahley R'09 welcomed Sebastian “Bash” Dean Stahley on January 8, 2026. Bash is already loved and adored by his two proud older sisters, Camilla (8) and Colette (4), who are thrilled to welcome him into the family. Professionally, Dean works in supply chain management at Stryker and remains active in the community through his role with Roncalli football and leading the Royal Football Club. Maria is the founder and creative cirector for Lulabelle. The Stahley family is grateful for this new blessing and excited for the memories ahead as a family of five.

Matthew Pfarr R'05 is a 2009 graduate of the US Air Force Academy and a Combat Search and Rescue helicopter pilot. Matthew is a lieutenant colonel and was recently promoted to squadron commander of the 41st Rescue Squadron at Moody Air Force Base. Matt's group, the Jolly Greens, became well known during the Vietnam War. Their motto is "That Others May Live," and it is the mission that drew Matt in and keeps him there. Matthew is pictured with his family after returning home after his last deployment.

Maykayla Gilley R'19 married Matthew Bratt on August 30, 2025. Matt is in the Army Special Operations as an Army Ranger. Maykayla is a certified anesthesiologist assistant.

Madysen Strykowski R’16 welcomed a baby girl, Eleanor Ann, on June 21, 2025. Evan and Savana (Roach) Christopher R'16 welcomed their first child, Lachlan Lee, on April 10, 2026 at 2:38 PM. Lachlan weighed in at 8 pounds, 11 ounces.

Jansen and Olivia (Lauck) Robinson R'19 welcomed their first child, Hudson Charles, to the world on June 1, 2026. Hudson was 7 pounds, 11 ounces and measured 20 inches.

Meredith Mader R'20 married Albert Navarro on June 13, 2026 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with the reception at the Tinker House Event Center. Meredith and Albert met at Ball State, both in the landscape architecture program. Roncalli alumni in the ceremony included Madeline Mader R'22, Meghan Mader R'24 and Isabelle Blackwell R'20. The couple honeymooned in Portugal and are settling into their house in Beech Grove. Proud parents include Kim and Jeff Mader R'93 and Chris and Al Navarro.

Brayden Collins R'26 was named the recipient of the Courage Award at this year's Indiana High School Sports Awards. Brayden was diagnosed with leukemia in June 2024 but returned to the Roncalli basketball team and even played as a senior, making a 3-pointer in his first appearance back on the court in January. Reagan Turk R'26 was named Marion County Female Athlete of the Year. Reagan is a threesport athlete leading her fellow teammates at Roncalli to their first girls state basketball championship and backto-back girls volleyball state championships. Reagan will attend West Virginia University in the fall to continue her education and collegiate volleyball career.

Katie (Groves) Hibner R’10, Director of Campus Ministry It’s bittersweet that this is my last Update article! As I make this transition out of the role of director of campus ministry, I want to make sure I say first and foremost how much being an employee of Roncalli has meant to me. This community is nothing short of life changing. The Holy Spirit dwells in the people in this building, and I have been incredibly blessed to be a part of the staff here. I look forward to continuing to cheer on Roncalli as a loyal friend and future parent! I’ve been at Roncalli for 13 years with five of those years being in ministry, so I thought it might be appropriate to share what I’ve learned and will take with me.

Ministry really is just knowing your people really well and responding to that. I wish I could go back and tell terrified college Katie that. Don’t get me wrong, knowledge of the Church and our faith is crucial, but to be a really effective minister, all you need to start with is knowing your people. Ministry is not really about talking but so much more about listening. Every good conversation, program, event or ministry stems from a listening ear. Ministry is done well when the faith is brought to the needs of the people right in front of you. I’ve been so fortunate to learn this from so many people who have ministered to me! My five years as the director of campus ministry have all been surrounded by the Eucharistic Revival and man, what a time to be a minister! The Church is indeed in revival as we’ve seen in the astounding numbers of people entering the Church and all of the fruits that have come from the National Eucharistic Congress. I’ve seen this in the number of people who come to adoration at Roncalli, and that packed chapel is just such a gift of hope for the Church. The Eucharist is the best source for revival, and we are blessed to be in the midst of such an intentional effort by our bishops and priests. Seek the Eucharist, you won’t be disappointed. High school is so special. For anyone who thinks it’s not, you haven’t been in a high school lately or at least not Roncalli. Students at this age are amazing. Their questions are coming from such a good place: desiring beauty, truth and goodness. Don’t stifle the questions and do not be afraid of them. They’re not asking them to trip you up or trick you, they’re asking because they genuinely want to know the answer; the real, authentic answer, to life’s burning questions. If we shut them down, they won’t ask. I loved working in a high school because today's youth still have the courage to ask the hard questions of life. High school is so special, and I have learned so much more from the students than I ever taught them. What a joy!

Praise God for the presence of our Church and to be able to minister in it. I am leaving Roncalli a more faithful Catholic, a better listener, a more informed minister and an overall more joyful disciple of Jesus Christ. I also leave Roncalli knowing that the campus ministry program is about to be abundantly blessed by Amy (Miles) Wilson R'96, our new director of campus ministry. For the past 25 years, St. Roch Catholic School has been home. I have been blessed to serve the community as both a teacher and principal, and the relationships I have built with students, families and colleagues have shaped who I am as an educator and a person. While leaving a place I love is bittersweet, I am incredibly excited to begin this new chapter as director of campus ministry at Roncalli.

At the heart of everything I do is a belief that ministry begins with relationships. I believe in listening well, walking alongside others and leading with a servant’s heart. My faith has taught me that some of the most meaningful moments happen not in grand gestures, but in everyday encounters where people feel seen, heard and loved. I am humbled and grateful for the opportunity to serve the Roncalli community and cannot wait to get to know the students, families, faculty and staff. I look forward to growing in faith together, celebrating the joys of our community and accompanying one another through life's challenges. I am excited to see where God leads us and grateful for the chance to begin this ministry together.

Packing Parachutes Kevin Banich R’09, Principal Principal Banich's speech during Senior Mass. I have been grappling with what I wanted my final message to be for this incredible group of seniors. My standard practice is to draw a connection between the theme at the opening school assembly and reflect on the past year. Yet I believe that approach falls short for the Class of 2026. Instead of looking back at just this past year, we must reflect on the incredible run of these past four years. A tradition at Roncalli is that at the end of Freshmen Orientation, we ring the bells at the Sacred Heart Chapel to announce that a new class of Royals is entering our community. Since those bells rang for this class, Roncalli has been on a remarkable journey.

During your time as Royals, we have been recognized as a Blue Ribbon School of Excellence, a Purple Star School, a Champions Together Unified School and a Disney on Broadway School of Excellence. In athletics alone, our teams have gone on to be National Champions, State Champions or State RunnerUps eleven times. It felt like every week we were announcing soldout shows and student sections, records being broken, history being made and “first-time in a long time” achievements. Gold ratings, perfect scores and undefeated seasons nearly became the norm. The title of Grand Champion has, in many ways, become synonymous with being a Roncalli Royal. You took one of our marketing lines, “Choose Excellence, Choose Roncalli,” and turned it into a lived reality. You chose Roncalli, and you made it excellent. I often find myself asking if there is a better four-year resume in the previous 56 graduating UPDATE MAGAZINE SUMMER 2026

classes. There is no denying that what this class has accomplished is historic and arguably unprecedented. But even more important than what you have done is who you are. Our theme for the year focused on going beyond accomplishments and getting to the heart. We reflected on the story of Vietnam War pilot Charlie Plumb, who challenges us to ask, “Who packs your parachute?” Without the literal and figurative parachutes in his life, he would not have survived his time as a prisoner of war. Yet the most powerful part of his story is not the crash or captivity. It is the realization that someone he never truly saw had been faithfully working in the background to help keep him alive. For all of us, there are people who pack our parachutes, those who quietly prepare us, support us, pray for us, believe in us and carry us in ways we often do not recognize in the moment. The Class of 2026 would not be standing here today without them: parents, guardians, siblings, teachers, administrators, directors, moderators and coaches. As the saying goes, it takes a village to raise a child. During this last week of school, and as you enter open house season, make sure you take time to thank those who have brought you to this moment in your journey. Thank them not just for their cards, cash or gift cards, but for the unseen work, the unseen prayers and the unseen sacrifices they made to help you land safely as a graduate of Roncalli High School. Just as importantly, do not forget this: many of you have also been packing parachutes without even realizing it. Throughout the year, I asked faculty and staff to share moments when they witnessed this in action, and the list is nearly endless.

Sometimes it was as simple as asking a teacher how their day was going, checking in on a classmate who seemed to be struggling or offering a sincere thank you at the end of class. Other times it was giving your time, talent and energy to help someone in need through tutoring before a test, staying after school to support a teammate or quietly stepping in when someone needed a friend. We watched you turn season-ending injuries into opportunities to mentor younger Royals. We saw you encourage teammates from the sidelines when you would have rather been on the field. We saw you help classmates understand material you had already mastered. Week after week, we heard your Wednesday prayers, moments of honest reflection, deep gratitude and faith-filled witness that uplifted the entire school community. We also watched you face difficult moments and respond with hope, faith and resilience. You showed up when it would have been easier not to. You forgave quickly, laughed freely and carried one another through seasons that were not always easy or fair. You brought joy into hallways and classrooms that needed it more than you knew, prayer into moments of despair and light into moments of darkness. Even in your most incredible achievements, I watched you be more excited to hold my daughter than to hold a state championship trophy. That is who you are. Your accomplishments will be recorded in yearbooks, but your character and faith will be remembered far longer in the hearts of those you have impacted. On Saturday, the bells of the Sacred Heart Chapel will once again ring. This time they will announce that the Class of 2026 is

entering the world. Your time as Royals has come to an end, and now you take with you the foundation built by your families and the lessons learned at Roncalli. Unfortunately, the world that you are entering thrives on the opposite of what you have lived here. Society is more interested in self-promotion instead of selfsacrifice. There is little talk about packing parachutes and far more emphasis on stuffing bank accounts. Society celebrates the number of followers you have instead of celebrating following Him. And yet, you are not being sent unprepared. You are being sent, formed, grounded and called, not as spectators, but as witnesses. The path of faith has never been about status or self-promotion. It has always been about service. As Jesus reminds us in Mark 10:45, “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve.” So do not settle for a life built around being served. Instead, build a life centered on serving your families, your communities, your neighbors and even those you do not yet know. Somewhere along the way, someone will need what you have learned here: how to pack a parachute for someone who may not even realize they are falling. Go forward to live boldly and love deeply. Serve without hesitation. Never underestimate the quiet, unseen power of what it means to lift someone else. In the end, the question was never only who packed yours. The question is whether you will become the kind of person who packs them for others. To the Class of 2026, the world is about to discover what we already know. This group thrives on lifting the lives of others. Well done, good and faithful Royals.
