Pride A Roncalli Catholic High School Publication | Winter 2023
A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Roncalli Catholic Family, With the holiday season upon us, it is the perfect time to reflect on and be thankful for everyone in our Roncalli Catholic community. Our alumni, parents, teachers, students, and friends continue to go out of their way to support the mission of Roncalli Catholic. I am continually grateful and amazed by the dedication of this incredible community that we call family. As I reflect on this past year at RCHS, my heart is filled with gratitude for the hard work and dedication displayed by our staff and students. I am so proud of the incredible effort put forth by everyone. It brings me great joy to witness the passion and commitment that makes our school special. I am also thankful for the tremendous support offered by the Roncalli Catholic community. Our RCHS family is generous not only with their financial support, but always seem to go above and beyond when it comes to volunteering at our events, providing sponsorships, supporting student scholarships and providing gifts for projects. In this magazine you can find our annual donor report for the 2022-2023 fiscal years. We are embarking on a historic time here at RCHS. We are thrilled to announce this fall the launch of our capital campaign. With this campaign, we have the opportunity to transform our school into a state-of-the-art institution that will benefit our students and staff. Currently, we are in the preparation phase of the capital campaign, and I am excited to see how our community will come together in prayer and generosity in support of our school. As we approach the end of the first semester and begin the second, our hearts are filled with gratitude for the amazing progress our students have made. We are so proud of their accomplishments and we know that they have worked tirelessly to achieve them. As we move forward, we humbly ask for your prayers and support so that our students can continue to flourish in their journey of growth and development. Your encouragement and guidance will help them to cultivate the virtues of Wisdom, Courage and Faith that will serve them well throughout their lives. Thank you for your unwavering commitment to our students and their success. We are truly blessed to have you as part of our community. Sincerely,
Sean Keisling Fall 2023 | 1

RCHS Launches Capital Campaign Roncalli Catholic High School is a unique place, and in August we began the process of taking the school to the next level. RCHS teamed with Steier Group in late September to launch a capital campaign with the goal of making the RCHS campus even better. President Sean Keisling, school leadership and the RCHS Board of Directors are committed to providing its staff and students with all the resources necessary to be successful everyday. Committing to the capital campaign is a key step toward making sure that happens. The process started with a feasibility study and an online survey to effectively engage the RCHS community. The study identified three specific needs. • • •
Renovation of Science Lab Classrooms. Renovate/Update the Student Services Center. Turf football field and resurface track.
We are in the early stages of the campaign preparation phase that is scheduled to occur over the next two to three months. Key tasks being conducted during this phase include recruiting volunteers, formulating campaign materials and identifying all donor prospects. We are excited to share our campaign theme - Pride In Our Future. RCHS will continue to update the Roncalli Catholic Community as the project moves forward. See the complete feasibility study below on our website.

Running to win! RCHS senior Gus Lampe captures Class C gold
Roncalli Catholic senior Gus Lampe
put together the best race of his high school cross country career on Oct. 20 at the Kearney Country Club and was able to stand upon the podium as Class C’s champion. The Class C individual championship was the first ever for a Crimson Pride athlete. Lampe finished just ahead of second-place finisher Tyler Hertz of Gothenburg with a time of 16:33.8. Lampe credits his strong faith in God and his hard work over the summer as two of the main reasons for his success. Lampe finished in tenth-place last season as a junior while competing in Class B. He just missed out on earning a medal as a sophomore, finishing 17th in the Class B field. Teammate and fellow senior Cooper Brungardt also left Kearney with a medal RCHS senior Gus Lampe finished ahead of the rest of the field at the Class C NSAA State Chamaround his neck. pionships in Kearney on Oct. 20. Brungardt ended up 11th in this year’s Class C race after crossing the finish line with a time of 17:24.4. Sophomore Shelby Willis capped an excellent season for RCHS and finished in the top half of the 120 Class C runners, crossing the finish line in 51st with a time of 23:01. RCHS Fall Sports Recap! The Duchesne/Roncalli Catholic softball team made an historic run to the 2023 NSAA State Softball Championships this season. It was the first time a Roncalli Catholic SB team qualified for the state tournament. The Pride played extremely well on Oct. 7 and pulled out two upset wins over Gering in the Class B-2 district tournament. The Cardinal-Pride squad beat the Bulldogs twice to advance to state. RCHS student-athlete Brigid McGill was named first team all-conference after leading the team with a .493 average. She also broke the school record for stolen bases in a career. RCHS student-athlete Agnes Lampe established a new school record for steals in a season with 14. The Roncalli Catholic football team was considered one of the top teams in Class C-1 this season and advanced into the playoffs as the 12 seed, drawing the fifth seed and defending state champ Pierce Bluejays. The Pride battled valiantly, but saw their season end with a 34-14 setback. RCHS finished with a record of 7-3. Senior Brady McGill finished the season with 1,742 passing yards and 26 touchdowns. McGill added 458 yards rushing and eight more scores. Senior Luke Orr caught 45 passes for 820 yards and 13 TD’s. Senior Chris Haman-Macias led the team with 652 yards rushing and 10 TD’s. Senior Clay Shafer led the defensive charge with 86 tackles. The Crimson Pride outscored its opponents 347176 in 10 games.
“At the beginning of our tennis season, most of the team was still learning, but with our coach’s help, our team was able to improve and become good,” said freshman Finnigan Clements. “The best part of tennis was the people. The people on our team were funny and the people we played against were very kind. Our practices were fun and productive. Although our team is small, we all became better and had fun throughout the tennis season.
The Roncalli Catholic volleyball grew as a team throughout the season and the time spent with teammates will not soon be forgotten. One of the highlights of the 2023 season was the fabulous performance the team turned in at the Ashland Invitational. The Pride defeated Plattsmouth in three sets and were able to claim the consolation championship while playing some of their best volleyball of the season.
The Roncalli Catholic golf team was led by senior Lily McGuire who medaled in 5 of 6 invites. She just missed out on qualifying for the state tournament by 3 strokes. Coach Don Jensen has a good nucleus coming back next year with junior Victoria Bilotta and freshman CeCe Moran.

- RCHS ALUMNI FOCUS Naisha (Turner) Davis (‘15) RCHS graduate Naisha (Turner) Davis has spent time traveling across the globe and living life to its fullest over the past eight years. Turner got married in 2022 and spent the entire summer in the Dominican Republic with her husband, learning Spanish and experiencing a new culture. “I am trying to become more fluent in Spanish (what a challenge), but I love learning it each day, also my husband only really talks to me in Spanish,” stated Turner. After graduation from RCHS in 2015, Turner left Omaha with her mom and brother and moved to Alabama to attend college at Alabama State University. After years of hard work and dedication to her studies she graduated with a degree in Marine Biology. In June of 2022, Turner moved to San Antonio where she works in the hospitality industry, but remains interested and involved in marine biology. She also has plans to start a family soon, but until then, she is working hard and spending as much time traveling as she can. Turner believes that the foundation of her success was built at RCHS where she was held accountable with her studies (she was a member of National Honor Society) and was encouraged to build new relationships while staying busy with extra-curricular activities. “RCHS was a place where I could cry, laugh, joke with my friends mess up and not be criticized, nor judged,” Turner stated. “Every student, every teacher, the entire four years I was present at Roncalli was truly the best.”
Jason Bergevin (‘92) In 2022, RCHS graduate Jason Bergevin was appointed by then-Nebraska Governor Pete Ricketts to serve as a District Judge in Nebraska’s Fifth Judicial District. The appointment was the realization of a life of hard work for the 1992 RCHS graduate. After high school graduation, Bergevin attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln where he attained a Bachelor of Science degree in Secondary Education. Bergevin later earned a Juris Doctorate degree from Western New England University. He was a teacher and high school coach after college in Omaha and Connecticut before working as the Deputy District Attorney at the Weld County Attorney’s Office in Greeley, Colorado. Bergevin returned to Nebraska and worked as the Deputy County Attorney at the Lancaster County Attorney’s Office in Lincoln and as an Assistant Attorney General at the Nebraska Attorney General’s Office in Lincoln. Bergevin and his wife Dr. Jenna Fiala just celebrated their 26th wedding anniversary and the couple has three children: Grant (20), Lance (17) and Blair (15). Grant is a junior at Creighton University and Lance and Blair are students at Pius X High School in Lincoln. “My favorite memory is the early morning gameday rosaries with my brothers on the football team,” Bergevin said. “I fondly recall the great teachers I had and the feeling of community. I remember watching the student news channel in TAC and eating hotdogs and nachos for lunch.”
- RCHS ALUMNI FOCUS Chris Mitchell (‘19) When Roncalli Catholic graduate Chris Mitchell got an opportunity to teach at his Alma Mater he was excited about the opportunity to give back to a school that shaped him into the person he is today. “I knew when I was a student here that it would be a great opportunity to come back and teach here,” Mitchell said. “In my opinion, Roncalli Catholic is the best high school in the Archdiocese.” Mitchell teaches music, is the band instructor and is in charge of the high school musical. Having your dream job does not come without challenges. With COVID-19 all but shutting down extra-curricular activities including band and music, Mitchell has found himself in rebuilding mode, trying to re-establish interest in the theatre, band and chorus. “We are in a challenging cycle right now,” Mitchell stated. “The kids coming into high school now were in junior high when COVID-19 hit and many of the opportunities in the arts and music were taken away. My job is to get students involved with the arts and music and show them how much fun it can be.” Being a recent graduate, Mitchell has had to get used to something new when roaming the halls at RCHS. His teachers have now become his peers. “I can call them all by their first names,” exclaimed Mitchell. “That took some getting used to, but I’m getting there.”
Emma (Heldt) Foster (‘15) Heldt calls her decision to transfer to Roncalli Catholic High School in the middle of her sophomore year ‘The best decision I made’. Heldt played volleyball, basketball and tennis and was a member of the dance team. She was also active in student government. After graduating in 2015, Heldt attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln majoring in Family Science and minoring in Psychology and Gerontology. During college, Heldt worked as a CNA to build up her resume in preparation for grad school. She was accepted and moved to Mesa, Arizona where she earned her Doctorate of Occupational Therapy. She completed her studies in Occupational Therapy. She returned to Nebraska and currently works as a Home Health Occupational Therapist in Omaha and Lincoln. Heldt was recently married to husband Adam Foster on Aug. 12 at St. Cecilia Cathedral. She remembers her time spent at Roncalli fondly. “What I remember most about Roncalli is the family atmosphere and closeness you felt with staff and students. It was welcoming and inclusive. It felt like home. Some of my favorite memories are from high school and I truly cherish those days,” said Heldt.
Swing with Pride 34th annual golf event hosts 216 players Temperatures in the mid 90’s could not keep people away from the 34th Annual Swing with Pride A. Len Leavitt Memorial Golf Open held at the Players Club at Deer Creek on July 24th. Alumni and friends got the day started with lunch and fellowship and followed it up with 18 holes of golf. After golf, participants were able to enjoy dinner and also got a chance to win raffle items. “It’s a day filled with laughter, smiles, and a shared commitment to supporting our school. The funds raised from this event are crucial in helping us achieve our goals, but the sense of unity and camaraderie it fosters within our community is priceless,” said RCHS Vice President T.J. Orr.
The event raised more than $60,000 for RCHS and is one of the pivotal fundraisers held throughout the year. “Our fundraisers enable us to provide our students and staff with the essential resources they need to succeed every day at RCHS,” stated President Sean Keisling in a professional tone. We’d love to see you at our next event! Learn more about upcoming events at Roncalli Catholic High School by visiting https://www.roncallicatholic.org/ our-school/events.
