We’d like to thank our amazing staff and volunteers for taking the beautiful photos found in this report. In particular: Santino Martirano, Micah Ness, Lauren ‘LP’ Panasewicz, Maria Penayo, and Amy Sabreen.
In August, we were honored to deliver our 5,000th prosthesis to 63-year-old ROMP Ecuador patient, Manuel. He is a farmer who lost his leg in June 2022 to complications from diabetes. Upon receiving his prosthesis, Manuel expressed immense gratitude and was overjoyed about being able to start walking. He dreams of becoming mobile enough to return to caring for his livestock.

Thanks to your generous support in 2023, ROMP ensured access to high-quality prosthetic care to more patients than ever in Guatemala, Ecuador and beyond. Our global teams and volunteers exceeded the 2023 production goals for deliveries and patient visits.
During the next two years ROMP will increase prosthetic device production by 37%, will provide Community-Based Rehabilitation services to half of all Guatemala prosthesis recipients, will increase mobile clinic outreach and partner with Universidad Don Bosco, the best Prosthetic & Orthotic University in Latin America, to offer clinical internships to the next generation of Latin American prosthetists.

After relocating our Guatemala operations to Guatemala City in Q3 of 2022, we hired our new Country Director: Davy Martinez. Under her leadership in 2023 we hired new ROMP Guatemala staff, renovated the workshop and fabrication lab, and had the most impactful year yet in ROMP Guatemala’s history.
In Guatemala, we provide prosthetic care year-round via our permanent ROMP Clinic in Guatemala City. We operate our Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR) Program and conduct Mobile Clinics to reach patients in their communities.
• Decentralized care via mobile clinics.
In 2023, we started a mobile clinic in the Caribbean town of Puerto Barrios, which is an easier point of access for patients from neighboring Honduras and Belize.
• Advanced our Community-Based Rehabilitation (CBR) program. Doubled our patient graduates in our CBR Program and expanded to six new departments. CBR now covers patients in 20 of the 22 departments in Guatemala.
Meet Cristóbal García, a 10-year-old pediatric patient in the Community-Based Rehabilitation (CBR) program. Cristobal lost his entire right leg to osteosarcoma on January 9, 2023. Recently equipped with his first prosthesis, Cristobal is now actively working towards regaining his mobility. As a CBR patient, Cristobal has successfully regained both mobility and independence. His dream is simple yet powerful – to run once again with his peers.
• Integrated physical and occupational therapy in our clinical care model. This year, we added physical and occupational therapists to our clinical team. This ensures that every patient receives complete care through the preprosthetic, prosthetic, and post-prosthetic phases of their rehabilitation.
• Redesigned and renovated our new clinic space. We finished the construction of a dedicated workshop, fabrication lab, and component storage area resulting in a world class prosthetic clinic and rehab center.
In Ecuador, we provide prosthetic care yearround at our permanent ROMP Clinic in Quito. We also conduct Mobile Clinics and operate a Satellite Location in Macas, in the Ecuadorian Amazon, to provide prosthetic care to patients from the region.
• Established a Satellite Clinic in the Ecuadorian Amazon. In 2023, we opened a satellite clinic in the capital of Macas in the Morona-Santiago region. Our Quito-based team now makes periodic trips to Macas to provide sustainable care to the indigenous communities in the area. We also plan to provide CBR services at the satellite within the next two years.
• Decentralized care via mobile clinics. This year we continued our mobile clinics to key locations around the country such as Manta, on the Pacific Coast, and Lago Agrio, in the Ecuadorian Amazon, where there are little to no options for prosthetic care.
• Dreaming big through adaptive sports. We are taking mobility to the next level by supporting patients who aspire to be high level athletes. This year, six of our patients participated in the VII National Games of Adaptive Sports in Ecuador and brought home three medals! We hope to provide more activity-based prostheses each year to help our patients reach their goals.
More than a decade ago, Miguel Mora lost his right leg below the knee after being hit by a car. He has had significant challenges throughout his limb loss journey, including having his prosthesis stolen. Without a prosthesis, Miguel resorted to crawling around selling candy to raise money for a new device. Thanks to the generosity of his friend, who helped sponsor his prosthetic leg through ROMP, Miguel received a new prosthesis in 2023. Miguel’s goal is to see how far his prosthesis will take him; he plans on learning to run for the first time!
In February, we established a Satellite Clinic in Macas. This has helped us reach more indigenous patients in the Ecuadorian Amazon who have never had sustainable access to care. We also started the second phase of attention in Lago Agrio (Amazon region) in alliance with the local government.
In the United States, we collect prosthetic components from numerous private clinics through our Components for a Cause (C4C) Program. These components supply our clinical operations in Guatemala and Ecuador with approximately 95% of all required materials. We also operate Volunteer Programs in which United States clinicians travel to our Guatemala and Ecuador clinics to increase bandwidth and exchange knowledge with local clinicians.
• Utilized global inventory management system. In 2023, we implemented a global, cloud-based inventory-management system. This enables us to maintain a tight control and valorization of all prosthetic components, across all countries of operations, at all times.
• Provided first US-based clinical program. In partnership with Baylor College of Medicine Prosthetics & Orthotics Program and Prescott’s Prosthetics & Orthotics, we provided prosthetic care to seven access-limited people with amputation in the San Antonio area.
• Hosted multiple Limb Disassembly Days. Our amazing partners collect donated limbs and activate their communities to help by disassembling the limbs, and then cleaning, testing, and sorting components. These volunteer days take a huge amount of work off of our ROMP warehouse staff. Huge Thanks to many partners including Saint Joseph’s University, Ability P&O, Carroll University, Hanger Clinic, and Penta Medical Recycling!
We worked with our long-time partner Baylor College of Medicine once again in 2023. Students from the program served with us in clinical volunteer programs in Guatemala and, for the first time ever, in the United States where they helped provide care to a number of access-limited patients from the San Antonio area.
• Improved global inventory management system. In 2023, we implemented inFlow, a global, cloud-based inventory-management system that offers a more precise way to catalog inventory across Guatemala, Ecuador and the US.
• Performed component valorization. We appraised the value of the components in our warehouse enabling us to understand the economic impact of recycling and distributing prosthetic components throughout ROMP clinic sites.
• Expanded supply of components and materials. We began to supply our Guatemala and Ecuador clinics with new types of components and materials like Sealing-Ring Liners and Vivak Plastic. This has directly enabled us to pursue new fabrication techniques and constantly improve quality of care.
• Continued partnerships to increase impact. Our ongoing partnership with Penta Medical Recycling has allowed us to trade components and sizes that benefit both of our organizations based on the patient demographics we serve.
In 2023, ROMP received a major donation of plastic from long-time partner Curbell Plastics. This plastic enabled ROMP to begin blister forming sockets, which opened the door to using new suspension systems for prosthetic care.
Our 5th Annual Mobility May was the most successful in our history and raised more funds than all previous years, combined! As a community, participants shattered both mileage and fundraising records, raising $56,244 and moving 33,597 miles. In total, 37 ROMP patients received prosthetic devices throughout the month of May.
ROMP’s overall theme of 2023 was “Dream Big.” During our end-of-year celebration, ROMP staff and supporters dreamed bigger than ever before! That evening, our community raised over $62,000. Hosted by reality-tv star Cameron ‘Cam’ Ayala and ROMP Co-Founder/Executive Director, Dave Krupa, the evening included sharing the organization’s dreams, unveiling plans for the future, and celebrating our community of dreamers.

2023 ROMP Climb Team Dreams
• Raised over $50,000 in Chicago. In August, ROMP went back to where the organization began and hosted an intimate gathering with our supporters in Chicago. Together, we raised over $50,000 that evening to directly support our programs.
• Attended four major limb loss and prosthetic industry conferences. ROMP was present at AAOP, AOPA, Amputee Coalition and Hanger Live.
• Continued partnership with the Colorado Brewery Run series.
Since 2018, ROMP has partnered with the Colorado Brewery Running Series, supplying volunteers to 3-5 of their 5k races each summer. In exchange, the Brewery Run donates a portion of their proceeds; in total, they have donated over $16,000 to ROMP.
To bring awareness to the need for better access to prosthetic care, Jessica Huang and her team of friends successfully summited the world’s tallest volcano above the sea, Ojos del Salado (elevation 6,893m/22,615ft). The group raised more than $8,500 for ROMP.
After a 2019 rock climbing accident that required extensive rehabilitation, Huang learned how challenging gaining access to treatments/ adaptive equipment can be.
“ I would like to use my regained mobility to support more people in increasing their mobility. Together, we can create a world where everyone can enjoy movement and access nature!”
Representation Matters: Dolls that look like me
Long time ROMP volunteer Rebecca Cook CPO, along with her Hanger Clinic team from North Carolina assembled 20 dolls with 3D-printed prosthetic legs for ROMP patients in Guatemala and Ecuador. The goal of the project is to promote inclusivity within the limb loss community and to give our young patients a doll that looks like them!
Climbing for ROMP was established in 2015 to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). It has since turned into a global awareness campaign, highlighting the importance of access to prosthetic care and the international significance of legislation protecting rights for those with disabilities. The signature climb each year is an expedition to some of Ecuador’s highest peaks with adaptive athletes and disability rights advocates from the U.S. and Latin America.
Two weeks after our 2022 team successfully summited Cotopaxi, the mountain closed to climbers due to volcanic activity. Our 2023 team attempted Cayambe for the first time in 5 years, since Cotopaxi’s last eruption.
“What’s
2024 is the 10th annual Climbing for ROMP campaign and we want you to join us. Our goal is to raise $500,000 for prosthetic care. By climbing our mountains, we can help ROMP patients take their first steps towards their own summits. We believe that when you have access to the right tools, the right team, and the right mindset, no summit is too high. You can join us anywhere in the world and climb for change, climb for mobility, climb for ROMP!

Honoring those in the ROMP community that have passed on in 2023.
Max Neufeld (1941-2023)
“Max was a New Yorker through and through. His passion in life was his family and the values he passed on to his children of the importance of kindness, hard work and generosity is also why he supported and believed so deeply in the ROMP mission.”
– ROMP Co-Founder Eric Neufeld
Kevin Rogers (1990 - 2023)
“Kevin and I loved supporting ROMP through participating in volunteer programs in Guatemala and fundraising with our family during Mobility May. Kevin could often be found sporting his ROMP apparel and sharing ROMP’s mission with family and friends. He has always loved deeply and had a servant heart and is greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.”
– Brittany Rogers, ROMP Ambassador and loving wife to Kevin
Barbara Bensel (1941-2023)
“Barbara Bensel lived a large portion of her later life with a prosthetic leg. It offered her freedom, mobility, independence and confidence. While her life was dedicated to her loving family, she cared deeply for others. She concerned herself for those less fortunate and when she passed, her children honored her wishes in helping those without proper access or ability to get high quality prosthetic care. She did this by partnering with ROMP. The mission and work of ROMP offered those the access to mobility and in turn, inherent dignity. This is one small piece that will keep our mother’s love for others living.”

Jesus Velez received his first prosthesis and his ROMP doll in November. At just nine years old, Jesus lost his leg in a motorcycle accident in May of 2023. He loves his studies and he said the hardest part of his amputation was being in the hospital instead of being at school. With his prosthesis, he wants to run again and play hide and seek with his friends.
