About the Project â—?

On May 25, 2020 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, George Floyd was killed by the police spurring protests all over the world. The result was months of daily protests, marches and demonstrations supporting the Black Lives Matter Movement.

Mapping the Movement is our team's attempt to document this historic moment and engage with users on a personal level to advance the conversation of race and policing in this country.

The goal of this project is to highlight the power of collective action to make change and help communities overcome injustice. Since the inception of the project we have worked with local organizations to support similar efforts in using data visualization and community organizing as key components for creating social change.

Mapping in Real Time: Using social media and local news sources we mapped over 900 protest locations within the first week across the United States.

Sourcing Local Content: The map links to images and local news stories about the protests in big cities and small towns across the United States.

Ground Truthing & Crowd Sourcing Information: Using ESRI’s Survey 123 and Collector App, we collected images and locations from users to validate specific details about protest locations.

Creating Simple User Interface ●

Clickable points allow users to view information about each city’s protest

Locations without local media sources/validation appear in grey

●

By clicking on an unverified point, users can add information about that specific protest location

●

Once verified by our team, protest locations with sources to local media outlets appear in orange

Adding Global Data: As protests continued to erupt across the world, our team collected data from all 7 continents making our map the most comprehensive dataset of the BLM Movement.

More than Just Protests: The outpouring of support for the Black Lives Matter Movement stretched far beyond protests to include street art, the removal of statues and the creation of new policies and ballot initiatives to advance racial justice.

More than Just Protests: The new user interface allows visitors to easily toggle the layers on and off to show the massive amount of protests locations, street murals, and contested statue locations all around the world.

Running Dashboard: Since May 25, 2020, our team has been quantifying full impact of demonstrations and activism around the world. Our new dashboard allows users to filter the large dataset and see images of protests, artwork and statues that have been removed around the world.
