0 1 . TRANSFORMATION OF WASTE [JUXTAPOSE, NET POSITIVE SPECULATIONS ON THE 21st CENTURY CITY] Waste products of industrial economies and growing populations increasingly stress our e n v i r o n m e n t , c a u s i n g p o l l u t i o n , w h i c h a ff e c t s o u r h e a l t h a n d d e g r a d e s t h e e n v i r o n m e n t , and climate change, resulting in rising sea levels and more extreme weather. These factors collide in the New York City waterfront where storm surges cause damaging flooding around marine transfer stations which export the city’s 20,000 tons of daily waste. Yet these areas are among the most economically desirable development sites in one of the planet’s most vibrant megacities. In collaboration with Vanshika Gandotra, we are proposing an integrated waste treatment plant that will define water as a means of transport, eliminating a signficant amount of trucks that would be needed to export residential trash and, therefore, decrease harmful greenhouse gas emissions and pollutants produced by those 2,500 collection trucks. The propsal comprises three main waste-management facilities: a floating immobile wastewater treatment plant along with a sludge treatment center, a floating co-generation plant that collects municipal solid waste from a network of sites, and an adjacent supporting material recovery facility. Wa(s)terlily has responded with both a humanistic and experiential approach to waste processing. By combining separate cohorts together, including blue-collar and white-collar workers as well as local residents and tourists, the proposal juxtaposes them with essential infrastructure functions that have a negative stigma associated with physical proximity to the waste systems. The Wa(s)terlily provides a framework for self-sustaining sites to operate through a network of modular systems, extending past the island of Manhattan to be situated on any coast or waterfront, creating global marine networks of trash transport and water purification. Through fleets of variously sized CSO collectors, any body of water can be purified, and through fleets of variously sized incinerators, the transport of trash and the process of cogeneration can become s i g n i f i c a n t l y m o r e e ff i c i e n t . P l a c i n g o u r s i t e a n d t h e s c o p e o f t h e s e t w o d e t r i m e n t a l issues in a larger context, we can anticipate how these systems can create a vast global network to work towards a sustainable future through self-sustaining cities.

Our proposed design is a mobile coastal waste collector and purifier. It is a buoyant structure designed to mitigate the effects of NYC’s trash and CSO problems. In a man-made world threatened by overwhelming amounts of waste, this design draws inspiration from one of nature's finest coastal water and air purifiers, the Water Lily. Just as the waterlily’s roots are anchored to the ground while it floats and gathers nutrients, our design proposal collects waste from around Manhattan that is then processed to generate power and other byproducts. Hierarchically relating to function, the largest petals are the wastewater treatment plant and the cogeneration boat with the smallest being the connecting bridges.

HUMANIZING BRUTALISM
[COALESCE, LONDON’S SOUTHBANK CENTRE IN THE 21st CENTURY] Two of London’s defining characteristics are its physical legacy of post-war brutalist architecture and its cultural tradition of English drama. This studio explores the seminal integration of these two art forms at London’s landmark Southbank Centre and study how they may be adapted, reinterpreted, and further developed to serve the needs and capitalize on the technological opportunities of the 21st Century. This semester-long individual project addresses the design of a flexible 500-seat performance chamber, with the goal of symbiotically integrating the existing venues and transforming the Centre’s identity. Focuses are master planning the Centre’s expansion, building design, and morphology of form and surface holistically. The view of the studio is that critical practice is defined as ‘how to make a real building’. The design focus of the studio is also; conceptual, sustainable, urban, and comprehensive, accompanied by interdisciplinary collaboration with drama, arts management, and lighting departments. My project directly addresses and attempts to place emphasis on the beauty of London’s Waterloo Bridge. The bridge has played a seminal role in the country’s history, industry, and culture. Through the commemoration and victories of wars, the advancement during the Industrial Revolution, and its austere and simple architecture alongside the Southbank Centre, the name Waterloo holds a lot of significance for the city of London. The bridge also houses some hidden history; though largely undocumented, Waterloo is also referred to as “The Ladies’ Bridge”, as much of the workforce was female during WWII. The presence of females in a centre largely built by males (Royal Festival Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall, and Hayward Gallery) should not be unaccounted for; it should be represented and glorified, just as the bridge has been. Representing both hidden and apparent beauty, the Waterloo Bridge can easily become the new center of the center of arts and culture in London, ameliorating the lack of communication between the existing buildings and, quite literally, bridging the gap between these cultural hubs. Gilbert Scott’s intention to bring “lightness and sweetness” to the underside of the bridge should be paralleled in its dynamic site context as well, extending the structure and its femininity into Southbank Centre.

ECO-MORPHOLOGY
[ FLOW, ENVIRONMENT, FORM, AND FEEDBACK: WATER COMMUNITIES ] This project attempts a discussion of converging social and environmental practices to fabricate ecological housing, rejecting the argument that these issues are separate and instead supporting the claim of a symbiotic relationship. It garners attention t o w a r d s t h e e ff e c t o f n a t u r a l a n d i n f r a s t r u c t u r a l w a t e r p a t t e r n s o n a r c h i t e c t u r a l o b j e c t s , and my project focuses on the agenda to foster a community while simultaneously adapting an ecological component in an urban setting. My design is formulated upon a potential solution for the improvement of water quality, both around the given site (Sixmile Island and the neighborhood of Sharpsburg) and any other applicable body of water. The issue of Combined Sewer Overflows (CSOs) and pollution of chemicals in water bodies is an increasing problem in the world as the population is dramatically increasing and available resources for freshwater is thereforce quickly becoming scarce. In my design, by the filtration through distribution applied by a system of tubing, I have combined private and public, housing and recreation, that congregate in terms of collection and use of clean water for various and readily available use. In addition, the visibility of the pipes from all over the site allows for the public to acknowledge and understand a significant ecological process.
