HUMANIZING BRUTALISM

[COALESCE, LONDON’S SOUTHBANK CENTRE IN THE 21st CENTURY] Two of London’s defining characteristics are its physical legacy of post-war brutalist architecture and its cultural tradition of English drama. This studio explores the seminal integration of these two art forms at London’s landmark Southbank Centre and study how they may be adapted, reinterpreted, and further developed to serve the needs and capitali z e o n t h e t e c h n o l o g i c a l o p p o r t u n i t i e s o f t h e 2 1 s t C e n t u r y. The design focus of the studio is also; conceptual, sustainable, urban, and comprehensive, accompanied by interdisciplinary collaboration with drama, arts management, and lighting departments. ECO-MORPHOLOGY

[FLOW, ENVIRONMENT, FORM, AND FEEDBACK: WATER COMMUNITIES] This project attempts a discussion of converging social and environmental practices to fabricate ecological housing, rejecting the argument that these issues are separate and instead supporting the claim of a symbiotic relationship. It garners attention towards t h e e ff e c t o f n a t u r a l a n d i n f r a s t r u c t u r a l w a t e r p a t t e r n s o n a r c h i t e c t u r a l o b j e c t s , a n d m y project focuses on the agenda to foster a community while simultaneously adapting an ecological component in an urban setting. M y d e s i g n i s f o r m u l a t e d u p o n a p o t e n t i a l s o l u t i o n f o r t h e i m p r o v e m e n t o f w a t e r q u a l i t y, both around the given site (Sixmile Island and the neighborhood of Sharpsburg) and any other applicable body of water. The issue of sewage overflow (CSOs) and filtration of chemicals in water bodies is an increasing problem in the world as the population is dramatically increasing and available resources for freshwater is thereforce quickly becoming scarce. In my design, by the filtration through distribution applied by a system of tubing, I have combined private and public, housing and recreation, that congregate in terms of collection and use of clean water for various and readily available use. In addition, the visibility of the pipes from all over the site allows for the public to notice and understand a significant ecological process.

ENVIRONMENTAL CHARTER SCHOOL

[COMMUNITY, ENVIRONMENTAL CHARTER SCHOOL] This project aims to design and construct a new branch for ECS, the Environmental Charter School, the global agreement to intrinsically interweave all subjects (STEM to STEAM), which stands parallel with the program and my concept -- to encourage an interactive environment and community space for the students. Since the most important aspect of the school is the students, the classrooms and their placement is significant in the project. The client requested that these spaces be meticulously designed, with varying types of classr o o m s a n d s e a t i n g a r r a n g e m e n t s f o r d i ff e r e n t t e a c h i n g s t y l e s . I n a d d i t i o n t o c l a s s r o o m s , the client requested that there also be a Think Lab, a space that would provide materials and lab equioment for extra study and teaching space. As for the rest of the building, the school should also include a multi-purpose space to be used as a cafeteria, auditorium, and any type of large assmebly space. Also included are administrative areas, communal and p r i v a t e b a t h r o o m s , a n d t h e n e c e s s a r y o ff i c e s f o r f a c u l t y a n d s t a ff . Through an abundance of green spaces, outdoor areas, curtain walls, and large apertures, the program seamlessly combines indoor and outdoor spaces. The large outdoor atrium stair captures the public’s initial attention, leading into the school through its grand main entrance and safety vestibule, and eventually leading to a large green roof on the third l e v e l , d i r e c t l y a b o v e t h e c a f e t e r i a / m u l t i - p u r p o s e a s s e m b l y s p a c e . C o n t i n u i n g v e r t i c a l l y, the outdoor spaces extend to another green roof on the fourth level across from the large think lab with its abundant glazing towards the south, extending even higher to the green roof at the top level.

CENTER FOR URBAN AGRICULTURE

[REVEAL, SANKOFA, GROW COLLECTIVE] Following an extensive site analysis, this project instructed us to design an urban agriculture center within the context of both the South Homewood neighborhood and the broader P i t t s b u r g h a r e a . T h r o u g h a n e ff o r t t o d e f i n e u r b a n i s m a n d a g r i c u l t u r e a n d i n t e g r a t e t h o s e into an architectural language, the center focused on growth and production as well as e d u c a t i o n a n d c o m m u n i t y. The relationship between the public and growing spaces is emphasized, the center acting as an interactive classroom. It consists of primarily open space: the second floor is entirely exposed, both the first and second floors are partially exposed through glass, and the ground floor includes an outdoor market and cafe. Social and production depend on each other and are paired together, i.e. the path lined with greenery on the ramp and the central ground space that the public tend to gravitate towards. The interaction between public and private, social and growth is crucial to the development of the center’s design.
