Jason G Fordham

Memorial Endowment Fund

We are very pleased to announce the creation of the Jason G. Fordham Memorial Endowment Fund.

Gifted by an individual who asked not to be identified, the Jason G. Fordham Memorial Endowment Fund was established to honor the memory of Jason Fordham, who passed away September 24, 2013, following a 4-year battle with cancer. Jason was a supporter of the arts in Rome and Floyd County, Georgia, particularly related to theatre and the preservation of the Historic DeSoto Theatre and was a member of both the Rome Little Theatre Board of Directors and the Historic DeSoto Theatre Foundation Board, serving as president of the Rome Little Theatre Board of Directors from 2009-2011. The designated purposes of the Jason G. Fordham Memorial Endowment Fund are: (a) to honor Jason Fordham’s contributions to theatre; (b) to serve as Jason Fordham’s legacy; and (c) to provide on-going support for Rome Little Theatre and the Historic DeSoto Theatre Foundation. The income from the investment of monies in the Jason G. Fordham Memorial Endowment Fund will be equally divided between Rome Little Theatre and the Historic DeSoto Theatre Foundation to be used in whatever manner the individual organizations deem appropriate in support of the arts in Rome and Floyd County, Georgia. In addition to the $100,000.00 initial donation to establish the Jason G. Fordham Memorial Endowment Fund, both Rome Little Theatre and the Historic DeSoto Theatre Foundation gladly accept donations to the Endowment Fund to honor Jason’s legacy and his many contributions to theatre as well as provide on-going support for Rome Little Theatre and the Historic DeSoto Theatre Foundation. Donations earmarked for the Jason G. Fordham Memorial Endowment Fund may be safely made at romelittletheatre.com or mailed to the Historic DeSoto Theatre, 530 Broad Street, Rome, GA 30161.

MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR It has been a distinct honor to direct this wonderful play. The cast and crew have been fantastic to work with and I have particularly enjoyed watching these young actors grow in their craft. Tom Sawyer is a classic American novel written early in Mark Twain's career, when humor trumped pessimism in his work. I have tried to emphasize the humor in this production, as well as the the sheer wonder of youth as seen through the eyes of Tom. It is not all fun and adventure though, as we see Tom struggle with a crisis of conscience. Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn are two iconic American characters, and I could not be happier with the fine young actors we have playing them in our production. I would like to thank everyone who helped out with this production, in particular, Neil Brackett, who spent many hours working on our set. Neil is extremely easy to work with and is seemingly unflappable. I would also like to thank the remarkable musicians who brought so much life to the production. And I would like to thank Lauren Jones, my assistant director, on whose eyes and instincts I can always rely. And I finally wish to thank the parents, for allowing me the opportunity to work with their talented children.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRODUCER The Adventures of Tom Sawyer holds a special significance for my family and me. Prior to the 2004 production, our family’s involvement was limited to Kim’s performance in the pit orchestra for musical shows like Oliver! and Camelot. Since Kim is a percussionist, my involvement was the usual role of the spouse of a percussionist: roadie. The 2004 production marked the start of greater involvement for the rest of our family at the RLT. Our sons Evan and Chase auditioned and made their first appearances on the RLT stage as fence painters. Through the show, we got to know John Barnett, Debbie Brown and Wanda Jones. I have to mention a few other names from that show as well. This was Jonathan Chisolm’s first show and he has graced our stage many times since. And, Adam Isabel performed as Joe Harper… Adam returned to the stage later in a show that I produced a couple of years ago, The Man Who Came to Dinner.

Another significant entry to the RLT also occurred in the 2004 production. Grayson Keating played the role of Ben Rogers. His mom, like myself, was just another backstage parent. Today, Megan Keating serves the RLT as our Executive Director. In this production of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, our third son Isaac is onstage for the show, and my own commitment to the show is far greater. With this show I am thankful for the growing involvement of several other families at the Rome Little Theatre. I look forward to seeing these young actors grace the stage many more times in the coming seasons. We appreciate all our friends and families at RLT who work so hard to bring a production to its final form on our stage. Many thanks to all of you who make the Rome Little Theatre such a great place.

A Guide to

Theatre Etiquette Arrive early It's a good idea to arrive at least 30 minutes early so you can have plenty of time to find a parking spot, pick up your tickets, use the rest room and get something at the concession’s counter. Use the restroom BEFORE the show and DURING intermission Turn your cell phone off Even if you have it on vibrate, people can still hear the buzzing and it's very distracting. Don't talk or text on the phone DURING the performance. If you need to take a call, please wait until a scene change before you leave. Coming and Going Please don't get up and leave during the performance unless it's an emergency. If you do need to leave or come back in, please wait until there is a scene change. Fidgeting Please sit still. Bumping your elbows into your neighbors or kicking the seat in front of you is annoying. If you have kids, please keep them in control. « Sight lines Try to avoid large hairdos and hats. Also avoid snuggling up to your date because it might block someone's view behind you. Photos Videotaping and taking photos during the performance is a distraction to the performers, other patrons and is often illegal. Please don’t take photos during the show. Other Etiquette Guidelines « Please refrain from talking, humming, or singing along with the show, except when encouraged to do so by the performers. « Please wait for an appropriate time to dig something out of your pocket or bag.

7

« Please do not make noise with candy wrappers or popcorn bags. « Outside food and beverages are not permitted in the DeSoto Theatre. « Go easy with the perfume and cologne, many people are allergic. « The Overture (intro music at the start of a musical theatre show) is a part of the performance, so please be quiet when it begins. « Don't put or throw anything on the stage. « Pay attention to the announcements that are being made prior to each show about the rules and regulations and the location of the fire exits. « Do not whistle or scream out to the performers, except for a Bravo or Brava in the finale. Now for some Dos: « Do laugh in appropriate places. « Do applaud with enthusiasm in the appropriate places. « Do tell all your friends, after the show, what a great time you had. « Do applaud when the performance is over; doing so shows the cast and the crew how much you appreciated their hard work and effort. « Stand and applaud if you really thought the show was great.

THE ADVENTURES OF TOM SAWYER BIOGRAPHIES Ryan Acree - Ben Rogers This is Ryan's second production with RLT. His original breakout role was Sebastian in The Little Mermaid Jr. Ryan, age thirteen, first appeared in theatre at the age of six, performing with Hiawassee Childrens’ Theatre and traveling with the "Singing Stars" youth chorus until 2010. He has been cast in various roles including the Caterpillar in Alice and Wonderland and he had the lead role of Peter Pan. He has also been a featured performer at the Georgia Mountain Fair. He is active in his school's chorus and musical theatre department and is a member of the International Thespian Society. His other interests include playing the piano and computer gaming. He is a 7th grader at Darlington School. Ryan thanks his mom and dad for their love and support. He hopes you enjoy the show! Anna Amos - Widow Douglas Anna is 12 years old and in the 7th grade at Rome Middle School. This is Anna's 4th production at Rome Little Theatre. She has appeared in Alice in Wonderland, Charlotte's Web and Oliver Twist. She also appeared as Dianna in Anne of Green Gables at the Dalton Little Theatre. Anna loves the theatre. She loves spending time with her friends at the theatre, both old and new. She loves bringing the characters to life for the audience. When she is not at the theatre she enjoys cheerleading, swimming and singing. She would like to thank her family and friends for their support and encouragement. She hopes that you will enjoy the show.

35

Isaac Brackett - Joe Harper Isaac has appeared a dozen other times onstage at the Desoto, including roles in Scrooge: The Musical, Alice in Wonderland, Gypsy, Peter Pan, Oliver Twist, as a tap dancing Jitterbug in The Wizard of Oz, and in last season’s Frankenstein. He has also performed in a number of R.O.M.E. shows. He is a member of the Spivey Children’s Choir at Clayton State University under the direction of Dr. Martha Shaw. He studies dance at the Dance Centre and plays soccer. You rarely see Isaac without one of the many hats from his hat collection! Neal Brackett - Producer This is Neal's tenth time in the producer's chair. Last season he collaborated with Virginia McChesney to bring you The Dixie Swim Club. They will work together later this season with The Outsiders. Neal began his career with the Rome Little Theatre helping his wife, Kim, bring percussion equipment into the theater for the Prospect Theater production of Kismet. His wife has appeared in the orchestra for many musicals and serves frequently with lighting design teams and as a board operator. Neal has appeared onstage numerous times with the RLT including To Kill A Mockingbird, Footloose and Gypsy. Neal serves the Rome Little Theatre as the VP of Public Relations. By day, Neal wears a number of other hats as the veterinarian at North Broad Animal Clinic, a father of three and a social entrepreneur.

THE ADVENTURES OF TOM SAWYER BIOGRAPHIES Jon Caruvana Jr Tom Sawyer Jon is a home-schooled student in the sixth grade in Rome, Georgia. This is Jon’s fifth performance with The Rome Little Theatre. This adventure has been a lot of work, but he has enjoyed being on the stage with his theatre friends. Jon loves using his imagination while exploring outdoors, building contraptions, and reading a good book. He would like to say a big, “Thank you!” to Wayne and Angela Jones who offered him his first adventure on the RLT stage. By jings, let’s get on with the show! Joy Christie - Mrs. Thatcher Joy is an eleventh grade student at Model High School. This is Joy’s fourth RLT production. Joy’s first appearance was as an Ozian woman in the 2013

RLT musical, The Wizard of Oz. Her second appearance was as the Newscaster in the 2013 RLT production of The 3 Little Pigs and The Trial of the Big Bad Wolf. Joy appeared as Carlotta in the musical, The Little Mermaid Jr. Joy enjoys playing the piano and guitar in her spare time. She also sings in the Celebration Choir and the Youth Praise Team at Sherwood Forest Baptist Church. Joy would like to thank the casting committee, cast, and crew for another wonderful experience. Jacob Faile - Muff Potter Jacob is 16 years old and is a junior in high school. His grades are perfectly adequate, so quit giggling about his unfortunate surname. He has starred in many productions around the world including The Taming of the Muffin, The Muffin of Venice, and MacMuffin. However, he has yet to win any awards in Guatemala, Turkey, and Timbuktu. Jacob likes to think of himself as a writer, philosopher, and comedian but in actuality he is just a stereotypical twit with an overactive imagination and an unhealthy obsession with muffins. His hobbies include tracing his genealogy down to random Austrians and teaching penguins how to fly. Molly Finnegan - The Minister’s Wife Molly is excited to be a part of her 7th play at RLT! Her last role was Flotsam in The Little Mermaid Jr.,and she loved transferring the evil from one play to the next! She sings and plays guitar and is a member of FBC Rome's Chapel Choir. She is a sophomore at Providence Preparatory Academy where she runs cross coun-

36

THE ADVENTURES OF TOM SAWYER BIOGRAPHIES try and competes in her school's annual literary competition. She would like to thank her parents for taking her to rehearsal and the director and producer, Michael and Neal. Reid Finnegan - Hooper Reid is an 8th grade student at Providence Prep in Rome. His hobbies include tennis and cross country. He is also a member of the Chapel Choir at FBC Rome. After watching his sister on stage for years, he decided it was his turn to be in the limelight. This is Reid's first RLT production. He would like to thank his parents for taking him to and from rehearsals, his friends for encouraging him to audition, and all the cast and crew for making this show happen! THE ADVENTURES OF TOM SAWYER BIOGRAPHIES Lauren Jones - Assistant Director Lauren returns to the Rome Little Theatre stage once again in her third round as an Assistant Director. Her most recent show was Frankenstein where she portrayed Elizabeth Lavenza, as well as being the Assistant Director. Having shared directorial duties with Michael Hillman twice now, Lauren is convinced that she and Hillman have uncannily similar theatrical visions that provoke her to fix Hillman with a piercing stare that clearly says, "Get out of my head, Hillman. This is just weird." Lauren is immensely proud of the Tom Sawyer cast and crew and is blown away by their talent and hard work. For her day job, she works at the Hospitality House for Women, Inc. as an Outreach Advocate and a freelance writer. In her spare time, she enjoys being ignored by her diva cats Stella and Bella, reading, performing monologues in the shower where no one can judge her and doing yoga to calm down. Alex Mitchell - Injun Joe Alex Mitchell is a seventeen year old senior at Coosa High School. He is the son of Roy and Suzette Mitchell. Alex is overjoyed to have finally been in enough plays to be considered more than just “Zac Mitchell’s brother.” This is his fourth play with Rome Little Theatre and his first play where he speaks both before and after intermission. Alex Mitchell is your regular Alabamian. He’s missin’ some teeth (seriously, he has no bicuspids) and loves his whole family, especially his cousins. Alex’s eyesight is terrible, and he loves him some sweet tea.

Zac Mitchell - Judge Thatcher It’s been a busy year on stage for the Coosa Middle 8th Grader. Aside from this stint as Judge Thatcher, he was Brett in Theatre Centre’s August production of Children’s Letters to God. In May, Zac was the evil wizard Murlox in New Horizon’s performance of The Golden Knight. Back in April, Zac donned the stage as Chef Louis in Rome Little Theatre’s The Little Mermaid, Jr. When not at rehearsals and performances, Zac’s eclectic tastes include card tricks, bow ties, fedoras, and listening to the Broadway channel on the radio. Gloria Murray - Becky Thatcher Gloria is a seventh grade student at Saint Mary’s Catholic School and is a member of the Drama Club. She was recently inducted into the International Thespian Society as a Junior Thespian at the end of her sixth grade year. Tom Sawyer is Gloria’s fourth performance at Rome Little Theatre. She has also performed in The Wizard of Oz, The Three Little Pigs and the Trial of the Big Bad Wolf, and most recently in The Little Mermaid, Jr. Gloria would like to thank her family and friends for their help and support. Enjoy the show! Olivia Parker - Mrs. Harper Olivia is performing in her 6th show at Rome Little Theatre as Mrs. Harper in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. She is 13, and attends Coosa Middle School in the 8th grade, where she participates in Chorus, and the Coosa High School Marching Band. Rome Little Theatre has really become such a humongous part of Olivia’s life, and she is so very grateful to have been part of this magnificent show, and such a wonderful community. 38

He hopes to continue volunteering at RLT and to be involved in as many ways as he can in all productions and events at RLT this season. He is always looking forward to the next show and light design in the near future.
