Historic DeSoto Theatre Foundation PRESENTS
September 20, 2014 PROCEEDS TO BENEFIT THE PRESERVATION OF THE HISTORIC DESOTO THEATRE
“To lead a community effort to restore, maintain and operate the DeSoto Theatre as a historical, cultural and economic asset.”
Message from the President Welcome to the Historic DeSoto Theatre. Thank you for attending tonight’s concert, “This Magic Moment with The Drifters”, presented by the Historic DeSoto Theatre Foundation and State Mutual Insurance. This has been an exciting year for the Historic DeSoto Theatre Foundation as we have worked to fulfill the above mission statement and our promise to restore this wonderful historic icon. With the help of strong partnerships the HDTF has formed with the Fox Theatre Institute, an arm of the Fox Theatre dedicated to the preservation of theatres, Rome Little Theatre, our resident theatre company and Seven Hills Fellowship, our neighbor church and friend who holds worship services in our auditorium on Sundays, we have made great strides. This year, we are also proud to announce new partnerships with Venuedog.com and the Rome Area Council for the Arts which have enabled us to expand the programming we are able to offer and bring more spectacular events to Rome. We have also benefited from the tireless work of many volunteers and from generous donations from members and friends. A special thanks to HDTF Programming Chair, Jim Powell, and Vice President, Michelle Picon who have worked tirelessly to foster these community relationships and build a coalition of support for the DeSoto. Additionally, tonight would not be possible without my friends, Ansley Saville and Fran Bagley; the true ‘architects’ of “This Magic Moment.” Tonight, we are excited to present a much transformed auditorium from this time last year. Those of you who joined us for the spectacular “Tam’s” Concert last fall remember that the very next day, we, along with help from the Rome Little Theatre and many of our volunteer friends went to work unbolting and removing the old seats from the auditorium. Those seats have been replaced with beautiful, historically accurate seats that pay homage to the theatre’s beginnings while providing all of the comforts of the 21st century. Pay special attention to the plaques that adorn the arms of many of the seats. Each plate bears the name of a patron or a loved one that has been memorialized by friends of the HDTF as part of our “Name a Seat” Campaign. Members of our community are embracing this unique way to help restore the DeSoto. Please take time to visit our new concessions area, renovated lounge space and updated restrooms which have been made possible by the generous donations to this campaign. Our architects, designers, and builders have worked together to create spaces that have a classic art deco feel with a modern edge. I especially want to thank, HDTF board members, architect, Mark Cochran and contractor, David Clonts, for lending their time and expertise to this phase of the renovations. We have many more plans in store for the theatre and we need continued support from the community to make them possible. We look forward to working with you in achieving our mission.

Message from the Event Chair Friends of the DeSoto, Thank you for "This Magic Moment" and for your ongoing support of our DeSoto Theatre! The DeSoto has been an integral part of the Rome community since 1929. It has brought joy and entertainment to the lives of many dedicated performers, volunteers and audience members over the decades. Being a part of the Foundation’s HOST COMMITTEES over the past four years has made me realize how much we have accomplished. In the past two years, we have completely refurbished the refreshments area, the new lounge, the two very large and wonderful men’s and ladies’ restrooms, and the auditorium. The new theater seats are exquisite, with more than 100 already named in memory or honor of a loved one. I remember the DeSoto in its former glory ~ the same glory that is being revived once again through the help of donors like you. The race is still on and I challenge each of you to follow us to the end! While much has been completed, there is still much to accomplish. Stay a part of this wonderful landmark and continue to support our community through the growth and restoration of the magnificent DeSoto Theatre. Thank you!

Jason G Fordham
Memorial Endowment Fund
We are very pleased to announce the creation of the Jason G. Fordham Memorial Endowment Fund.
Gifted by an individual who asked not to be identified, the Jason G. Fordham Memorial Endowment Fund was established to honor the memory of Jason Fordham, who passed away September 24, 2013, following a 4-year battle with cancer. Jason was a supporter of the arts in Rome and Floyd County, Georgia, particularly related to theatre and the preservation of the Historic DeSoto Theatre and was a member of both the Rome Little Theatre Board of Directors and the Historic DeSoto Theatre Foundation Board, serving as president of the Rome Little Theatre Board of Directors from 2009-2011. The designated purposes of the Jason G. Fordham Memorial Endowment Fund are: (a) to honor Jason Fordham’s contributions to theatre; (b) to serve as Jason Fordham’s legacy; and (c) to provide on-going support for Rome Little Theatre and the Historic DeSoto Theatre Foundation. The income from the investment of monies in the Jason G. Fordham Memorial Endowment Fund will be equally divided between Rome Little Theatre and the Historic DeSoto Theatre Foundation to be used in whatever manner the individual organizations deem appropriate in support of the arts in Rome and Floyd County, Georgia. In addition to the $100,000.00 initial donation to establish the Jason G. Fordham Memorial Endowment Fund, both Rome Little Theatre and the Historic DeSoto Theatre Foundation gladly accept donations to the Endowment Fund to honor Jason’s legacy and his many contributions to theatre as well as provide on-going support for Rome Little Theatre and the Historic DeSoto Theatre Foundation. Donations earmarked for the Jason G. Fordham Memorial Endowment Fund may be safely made at romelittletheatre.com or mailed to the Historic DeSoto Theatre, 530 Broad Street, Rome, GA 30161.
The Drifter’s History Formed in 1953, The Drifters are a trend setting Rhythm & Blues group with numerous chart-topping hits to their credit. First entering Billboard's Top 40 in June 1959 with “There Goes My Baby", The Drifters went all the way to the number two position. The hits were non-stop as the Drifters rose in popularity on Billboard's Top 40 on the Atlantic record label. In September of 1960, The Drifters hit again with, "Save the Last Dance for Me", a number one recording that spent fourteen weeks on Billboard's Top 40. "Up on the Roof", made 1962 a memorable year followed in 1963 by the ever-popular "On Broadway". In July of 1964 The Drifters entered the Top 40 again with the unforgettable "Under the Boardwalk", a number four hit single that spent twelve weeks on the charts." The Drifters have played with many phenomenal groups, including The Temptations and Four Tops. The Drifters have had a long list of singers: Clyde McPhatter, Bill Pinkney, brothers Gearheart Thrasher and Andrew Thrasher, Ben E. King, Johnny Moore, Rudy Lewis, and Charlie Thomas. But of all their lead singers, Bennie Anderson is still singing today. Since their chart-topping days, Georgia Beach Band, The Drifters have continued to entertain thousands on the concert stage and at corporate events and conventions from coast to coast. Combining their million selling hits with current chart favorites, The Drifters leave audiences everywhere filled with nostalgia and hungry for more.

DeSoto Theatre History In early 1928 O. C. Lam, the owner of Lam Amusement Company, laid plans to construct a new movie theatre in downtown Rome, Georgia. Lam wanted to build a movie palace — a luxurious theatre modeled after New York’s Roxy. Lam purchased a section of prime real estate on the main street of downtown Rome for $50,000. The building’s exterior and Georgian interior stylishly housed a number of recent movie palace innovations. Designed as a “talkie” theatre, it was the first venue in the South to be designed and built for sound pictures. Rome’s new house boasted a Vitaphone sound system. And, the theatre was heated and cooled by an innovative blower-fan air conditioning and tubular boiler system. Additionally, the theatre was equipped with state of the art fire safety equipment. Fitted with many exits, the theatre could be emptied in two minutes. Lam named his new movie palace for Hernando DeSoto, who was thought by many historians to have passed through the area that is now Rome in 1540. The DeSoto was completed at a cost of $110,000 and opened in August of 1929. At that time, the theatre seated well over 1000 patrons, making it one of the seven largest movie venues in Georgia at the time. The theatre was an instant success and the pride of Rome. The DeSoto was one of the main sources of entertainment for Northwest Georgia and Northeast Alabama for the next fifty years. In 1982, The DeSoto closed as a movie theatre, but soon reopened as the venue for Rome’s local amateur theatre group. Now seating 498 patrons, the Rome Little Theatre has staged dozens of plays in the 23 years it owned the DeSoto, and the theatre is one of the venues for the annual Rome International Film Festival. The DeSoto continues to be a source of entertainment in downtown Rome. The DeSoto still retains its Art-Deco marquee, French mirrored entrance hall, and Georgian interior design. RLT deeded the facility to the Historic DeSoto Theatre Foundation in order to preserve and protect the building.
