“To lead a community effort to restore, maintain and operate the DeSoto Theatre as a historical, cultural and economic asset.”

A Warm Welcome from the Historic DeSoto Theatre Foundation!

S

it down, take a deep breath, and look around. You’re about to experience what’s probably the most special evening that the DeSoto Theatre has seen in our generation. Our Hometown Diva Jamie Barton sings at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York on Saturday evening, hops on a plane, and sings at the DeSoto Theatre stage on Sunday evening. We are immensely proud to be the stage that gave Jamie her first audience, and humbled by her wish to return to help with our mission. Not that long ago, the idea of restoring the DeSoto Theatre seemed like an unattainable dream. When the Historic DeSoto Theatre Foundation was founded in 2008 the plan was to raise funds through an aggressive capital campaign and do as many of the renovations as possible all at once. Then the economy crashed around us, and we had to go to Plan B. “Forget about raising money,” advised our mentor, the Fox Theatre Institute. “Concentrate on raising friends.” This was simple but on-target, invaluable advice that we have stood by. Friends are… priceless! Our thanks to Jamie Barton, Wayne and Pat Vick, Clayton and Connie Vick, Heritage First Bank, Kevin Snodgrass, Helmut Cauthen, AllStar Foundation, Randy Land, Ken & Laura Davis, and so many others, whom by their leadership in supporting this concert are helping inspire even more friends to join our circle, helping us get closer to the next stage of the restoration. The HDTF Board constantly evaluates priorities, balancing the immediate maintenance needs of an old building -such as air conditioning and heat updates, roof repairs, improving electrical safety -with less critical but just as important and, oh so beautiful, updates such as installing a new carpet or improving sound quality. The better we look, the more popular we get! Increased rentals are a welcome source of income for HDTF.

In addition to the recent installation of 500 new seats, renovated auditorium, marble bathrooms and art-deco chrome fixtures that were followed by our new carpet, we finally end this first stage of renovations with the completion of the brand-new concessions area and catering kitchen! Designed by the combined geniuses of architect Mark Cochran and interior designer Tommy Lam, whose grandfather O.C. Lam built the theatre, our concessions counter has an art-deco feel and is a fabulous space for parties and rentals. We thank Ann Arnold and the Downtown Development Authority for helping us secure the $20,000 grant from the Georgia Council for the Arts and the Economic Development Administration, and we thank you, our supporters, for helping us raise the matching funds to complete the project. Going forward, this concert has already allowed us, among other things, to repair and paint the outside of the building so as to protect the plaster from further water damage. The historic plain white color from 1929 didn’t seem to be a popular choice, so we asked our historian Selena Tilly to research alternatives. When the new red marquee was added in the 1940’s the building was painted gray, so our Lam and Cochran team found the perfect shade. With donations earmarked specifically for dressing room renovations and for the gorgeous balcony curtains, our Jewel of Broad Street is spruced up and ready to welcome her Downtown Diva! We are extremely proud of what the Historic DeSoto Theatre Foundation is achieving. We hope that you, our friends, also feel proud of the role that you play at the DeSoto. Sincerely, Chris Jackson, President, HDTF Michelle Picon, Vice President, HDTF

Messages from the Event Co-Chairs

T

he DeSoto Theatre is a Rome treasure and a tradition. It has been a tradition in my family for three generations. My mother and her brother, back in the 1950’s, would look forward to the hot dogs and other refreshments at the DeSoto. In the 1960’s I would often enjoy visiting the theatre, watching movies such as Topo Gigio, Song of The South, Fiddler on the Roof and, later on, Love Story. For my children the DeSoto was their first theatre experience, and to them the stage was huge. Now another Rome treasure is reliving her first childhood experience on her first stage. What an honor and a privilege to know Jamie Barton! I first heard her sing at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York as she performed Norma. My next experience hearing her was at Mt.Tabor Methodist Church in Everett Springs, Georgia. It is difficult to sing hymnals standing next to an Opera Diva. From the big stage to the little stage and back again, none of this would be possible without the hard work of The Historic Desoto Theatre Foundation. Michelle Picon and Jim Powell work tirelessly for the DeSoto and we thank them; and to Jamie Barton, thank you for this past year, I enjoyed the ride, much love!

hen I was a little girl in the late 40's and early 50's, the DeSoto Theatre was a very important place to me. My brother and I would go most Saturdays to see the movies, news reel and the cartoons. We would stay all day. Jamie Barton told her father, Jim Barton, and Wayne Vick, that she would like to do a benefit for the DeSoto Theatre. That was where she spent a lot of her childhood and where she gave her first performance. She wanted to save this building for Rome. Jim talked to Connie Vick, who had gotten involved with the DeSoto and Rome Little Theatre as a volunteer. I told her I would like to help raise money for the preservation of this building. From there Wayne Vick went to Heritage First Bank armed with

Connie Vick information on Jamie and the Theatre. They said YES and off we went. The bank directors have been generous and we all appreciate their help so much. I hounded my friends and neighbors and we are here today with lots of hard work from Connie Vick and our committee, especially Jim Powell. Connie and I knew nothing of the procedures to put on such a show and with his quiet but firm guidance we managed. Thank you to all of the committee for your help and guidance. Thank you Michelle Picon, for pulling it all together. I know you will all enjoy Jamie's concert and hopefully it will be financially successful for the Historic DeSoto Theatre Foundation.

DeSoto Theatre History

I

n early 1928 O. C. Lam, the owner of Lam Amusement Company, laid plans to construct a new movie theatre in downtown Rome, Georgia. Lam wanted to build a movie palace — a luxurious theatre modeled after New York’s Roxy. Lam purchased a section of prime real estate on the main street of downtown Rome for $50,000. The building’s exterior and Georgian interior stylishly housed a number of recent movie palace innovations. Designed as a “talkie” theatre, it was the first venue in the South to be designed and built for sound pictures. Rome’s new house boasted a Vitaphone sound system. And, the theatre was heated and cooled by an innovative blower-fan air conditioning and tubular boiler system. Additionally, the theatre was equipped with state of the art fire safety equipment. Fitted with many exits, the theatre could be emptied in two minutes. Lam named his new movie palace for Hernando DeSoto, who was thought by many historians to have passed through the area that is now Rome in 1540. The DeSoto was completed at a cost of $110,000 and opened in August of 1929. At that time, the theatre seated well over 1000 patrons, making it one of the seven largest movie venues in Georgia at the time. The theatre was an instant success and the pride of Rome. The DeSoto was one of the main sources of entertainment for Northwest Georgia and Northeast Alabama for the next fifty years. In 1982, The DeSoto closed as a movie theatre, but soon reopened as the venue for Rome’s local amateur theatre group. Now seating 500 patrons, the Rome Little Theatre has staged hundreds of plays in the 25 years it owned the DeSoto, and the theatre is one of the venues for the annual Rome International Film Festival. The DeSoto continues to be a source of entertainment in downtown Rome. The DeSoto still retains its Art-Deco marquee, French mirrored entrance hall, and Georgian interior design. RLT deeded the facility to the Historic DeSoto Theatre Foundation in order to preserve and protect the building.

A Heartfelt Thanks to J.T. Watters, III and Patriot Mills for turning the Historic DeSoto Theatre into a

Red Carpet Celebrity! Our recently donated custom-made carpet feels like expensive silk and evokes the movie theatres of the past. It has brought the renovation efforts of the Historic DeSoto Theatre Foundation to a new level, giving us yet another glimpse of what HDTF and the Rome community can achieve together.

Thanks PAT VICK for the donation of the Balcony Curtains that now grace our auditorium and for the Dressing Room Renovations that will welcome Jamie backstage. Pat remembers the nice balcony curtains of the past and wanted to bring them back. She also wanted Jamie to be in a very nice dressing room tonight. Inspired by the donation of the carpet in the spring, and knowing that her wish list would not be a financial priority for HDTF at this time, she made a restricted gift to fund her projects. She wants others to know that restricted gifts are a great way to donate to the Historic DeSoto Theatre Foundation.

We are proud to support the

Historic DeSoto Theatre, our beautiful hometown stage,

and Jamie Barton, our beautiful Hometown Diva, who is now on the world stage.

Congratulations

Jamie Barton and the

Historic DeSoto Theatre Foundation.

We wish you continued success!
