MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR Earlier this season, I was stopped by several RLT patrons who wanted to know when we were next doing a “Ladies’ Night Out” production. It is, first, lovely to know that we have an audience that enjoys such performances/productions and, second, an honor to be directing that production! Thank you, dear ladies, for asking! I know you have heard me say before what a pleasure it is to direct for RLT. There are several reasons. The first I want to address is the fabulous talent that abounds in Rome and the surrounding area. The five lovely, talented women you will watch tonight are proof of that. Let me tell you a little more about them. They are all devoted thespians from quite varied backgrounds. They have allowed me to explore with them their character development and working as a team in ways I never have before. They have been both filling me with challenges and rewarding me with incorporating everything I have suggested. Another RLT director said a show can be successful with a good script and good actors. That is, in part, true and does indeed make the director’s job much easier! I am sorry you have not been party to all these wonderful women have done but you do reap the rewards of all their hard work and desire to present the playwrights’ work in a legitimate manner. The next is the hard work Neal Brackett and family will do to get what I want on the stage. Neal is devoted to this theatre and works, excuse the exaggeration, millions of hours whether he has help or not. He takes my ideas and flies with them. I think we make a pretty good team! Thank you, Neal! I am sorry you, the audience, do not see all he does and the enthusiasm with which he does it. I have been amazed by the generosity of the community in providing the usual and unusual props we have needed for this show. This would be where I add the
shameless request that if you have furniture, dishes, glasses, decorative items, clothing that could be costumes, a stuffed lion you are not going to use again, fabric for the project you have abandoned, and the like, you give us a call and we will gladly use them on the stage. I also want to acknowledge the willingness of the several individuals and organizations that have played along with us in creating everything from head shots to set parts! You never see the backstage crew and the persons who do all the tech for a show. We could not survive without them. They each have a special place in my heart. Welcome Sawah Smith who is a first time stage manager. I look forward to seeing the many things she will do in the future. She is already building a fine troupe of assistants! The other day the playwright, Jessie Jones, called the theatre to thank RLT for doing this show, to give the usual “break a leg” to everyone in the cast and crew. I called to invite her and the rest of the trio to our show. Unfortunately, they had to decline. However,
she did ask me to thank each of you for coming to see this production. I cannot tell you the last time a playwright called us nor when I have invited a playwright to see an RLT production! I certainly think they would enjoy what we have done with their script. Thank you for finding the time in your busy schedule to attend this show. Without you, our audience, we would have no reason to exist! Your generosity and kindness are greatly appreciated. Many sincere thanks. Ladies, you will see yourselves, your family, your friends in this show. Men, I hope you have a better understanding of what makes us work, our shared secrets, our joys, our fears, our sorrows. And how much we need our “sisters” and our “men” in our lives! “The faster WE swim, the sooner WE win!”

A Guide to
Theatre Etiquette Arrive early It's a good idea to arrive at least 30 minutes early so you can have plenty of time to find a parking spot, pick up your tickets, use the rest room and get something at the concession’s counter. Use the restroom BEFORE the show and DURING intermission Turn your cell phone off Even if you have it on vibrate, people can still hear the buzzing and it's very distracting. Don't talk or text on the phone DURING the performance. If you need to take a call, please wait until a scene change before you leave. Coming and Going Please don't get up and leave during the performance unless it's an emergency. If you do need to leave or come back in, please wait until there is a scene change. Fidgeting Please sit still. Bumping your elbows into your neighbors or kicking the seat in front of you is annoying. If you have kids, please keep them in control. « Sight lines Try to avoid large hairdos and hats. Also avoid snuggling up to your date because it might block someone's view behind you. Photos Videotaping and taking photos during the performance is a distraction to the performers, other patrons and is often illegal. Please don’t take photos during the show. Other Etiquette Guidelines « Please refrain from talking, humming, or singing along with the show, except when encouraged to do so by the performers. « Please wait for an appropriate time to dig something out of your pocket or bag.

« Please do not make noise with candy wrappers or popcorn bags. « Outside food and beverages are not permitted in the DeSoto Theatre. « Go easy with the perfume and cologne, many people are allergic. « The Overture (intro music at the start of a musical theatre show) is a part of the performance, so please be quiet when it begins. « Don't put or throw anything on the stage. « Pay attention to the announcements that are being made prior to each show about the rules and regulations and the location of the fire exits. « Do not whistle or scream out to the performers, except for a Bravo or Brava in the finale. Now for some Dos: « Do laugh in appropriate places. « Do applaud with enthusiasm in the appropriate places. « Do tell all your friends, after the show, what a great time you had. « Do applaud when the performance is over; doing so shows the cast and the crew how much you appreciated their hard work and effort. « Stand and applaud if you really thought the show was great.

Show Synopsis The Dixie Swim Club focuses on five Southern women, whose friendships began many years ago on their college swim team, who set aside a long weekend every August to recharge those relationships. Free from husbands, kids and jobs, they meet at the same beach cottage on North Carolina’s Outer Banks to catch up, laugh and meddle in each other’s lives. The Dixie Swim Club focuses on four of those weekends and spans a period of thirty-three years.

We are expanding for 2014: Two-week camp for ages 8 – 16 (plus interns) and half-day two week camp for ages 5 – 7 (plus interns). The purpose of Theatre Arts in the Park shall be to (a) offer a two-week theatrical camp during the summer of each fiscal year, (b) present amateur theatrical productions, (c) encourage interest in drama, and (d) contribute to the cultural and educational life of the community in theatrical arts. Theatre Arts in the Park shall be an active supporter of the Arts in Cave Spring, Rome, Floyd County and surrounding areas.

THE DIXIE SWIM CLUB BIOGRAPHIES Marie Kindred - Vernadette Marie works at Brown & Brown Insurance as a Commercial Account Manager and part time at Schroeder’s on Broad. This is her second appearance on stage at RLT. She portrayed the Matron of The Big Doll House in Hairspray. Marie would like to thank her family for being supportive, understanding and her source of inspiration. She would also like to thank the incredible cast and crew of The Dixie Swim Club for the wonderful new friendships that will forever be cherished. Marie would like to extend sincere gratitude to Virginia for going out on a limb and having faith in giving her this opportunity of a lifetime. Jeanette Long - Lexi Jeanette is excited to return to the RLT stage. She is grateful to her husband, Bronson and daughter, Allison, for being wonderful. Many thanks to her family and friends who have and continue to encourage her. What a joy this experience has been! Virginia M McChesney - Director Virginia is a native Roman. Having received both her Bachelors and Masters degrees in Fine Arts in Drama and Theatre from UGA, she returned home to decide what to do and found a job teaching special education for the Floyd County Schools. 41 years and two more degrees later, she has retired from teaching but still has not left Rome. She has done everything from acting and directing to knocking out seats and cleaning restrooms for RLT. She has been involved in some way in over 120 shows for RLT and other producing companies while in Rome. She directed last year's Shakespeare in Hollywood.

Donna Riordan - Dinah Donna is an English teacher at Armuchee High School, where she just finished her 27th year in the classroom. She caught the "Theatre Bug" six years ago and has been seen onstage in several RLT productions. She has also worked as Stage Manager and backstage crew and served on several committees. Other than theatre, her favorite pastime is entertaining Sophie, her Labrador Retriever. Liz Tierney - Jeri Neal Liz is delighted to be back on the RLT stage after a long hiatus. She has appeared in several RLT productions including Don't Drink the Water, for which she won a Roman for Best Actress. She has enjoyed once again working with Virginia and making new friends, Donna, Jeanette, Marie and Mary, with whom she hopes to be able to "play" on stage again very soon. She would like to thank her husband, John Mike and son, Jonathan for their love and support. But most of all, she would like to thank her friends, both old and new, for their inspiration, humor, support, honesty, love and sisterhood. Mary Walker - Sheree Mary has been involved with RLT for ten years, both on the stage, and backstage. She is a member of the Board of Directors and loves her RLT family!! This experience (The Dixie Swim Club) has been a blessing: getting to work with such a talented, beautiful bunch of women (Director Virginia McChesney included!!) has been an experience she will treasure always!
