Memorial Endowment Fund

We are very pleased to announce the creation of the Jason G. Fordham Memorial Endowment Fund.

Gifted by an individual who asked not to be identified, the Jason G. Fordham Memorial Endowment Fund was established to honor the memory of Jason Fordham, who passed away September 24, 2013, following a 4year battle with cancer. Jason was a supporter of the arts in Rome and Floyd County, Georgia, particularly related to theatre and the preservation of the Historic DeSoto Theatre and was a member of both the Rome Little Theatre Board of Directors and the Historic DeSoto Theatre Foundation Board, serving as president of the Rome Little Theatre Board of Directors from 2009-2011. The designated purposes of the Jason G. Fordham Memorial Endowment Fund are: (a) to honor Jason Fordham’s contributions to theatre; (b) to serve as Jason Fordham’s legacy; and (c) to provide on-going support for Rome Little Theatre and the Historic DeSoto Theatre Foundation. The income from the investment of monies in the Jason G. Fordham Memorial Endowment Fund will be equally divided between Rome Little Theatre and the Historic DeSoto Theatre Foundation to be used in whatever manner the individual organizations deem appropriate in support of the arts in Rome and Floyd County, Georgia. In addition to the $100,000.00 initial donation to establish the Jason G. Fordham Memorial Endowment Fund, both Rome Little Theatre and the Historic DeSoto Theatre Foundation gladly accept donations to the Endowment Fund to honor Jason’s legacy and his many contributions to theatre as well as provide on-going support for Rome Little Theatre and the Historic DeSoto Theatre Foundation. Donations earmarked for the Jason G. Fordham Memorial Endowment Fund may be safely made at romelittletheatre.org or mailed to the Historic DeSoto Theatre, 530 Broad Street, Rome, GA 30161.

A Guide to

Theatre Etiquette Arrive early It's a good idea to arrive at least 30 minutes early so you can have plenty of time to find a parking spot, pick up your tickets, use the rest room and get something at the concession counter. Use the restroom BEFORE the show and DURING intermission Turn your cell phone off Even if you have it on vibrate, people can still hear the buzzing and it's very distracting. Don't talk or text on the phone DURING the performance. If you need to take a call, please wait until a scene change before you leave. Coming and Going Please don't get up and leave during the performance unless it's an emergency. If you do need to leave or come back in, please wait until there is a scene change. Fidgeting Please sit still. Bumping your elbows into your neighbors or kicking the seat in front of you is annoying. If you have kids, please keep them in control. « Sight lines Try to avoid large hairdos and hats. Also avoid snuggling up to your date because it might block someone's view behind you. Photos Videotaping and taking photos during the performance is a distraction to the performers, other patrons and is often illegal. Please don’t take photos during the show. Other Etiquette Guidelines « Please refrain from talking, humming, or singing along with the show, except when encouraged to do so by the performers. « Please wait for an appropriate time to dig something out of your pocket or bag.

« Please do not make noise with candy wrappers or popcorn bags. « Outside food and beverages are not permitted in the DeSoto Theatre. « Go easy with the perfume and cologne; many people are allergic. « The Overture (intro music at the start of a musical theatre show) is a part of the performance, so please be quiet when it begins. « Don't put or throw anything on the stage. « Pay attention to the announcements that are being made prior to each show about the rules and regulations and the location of the fire exits. « Do not whistle or scream out to the performers, except for a Bravo or Brava in the finale. Now for some Dos: « Do laugh in appropriate places. « Do applaud with enthusiasm in the appropriate places. « Do tell all your friends, after the show, what a great time you had. « Do applaud when the performance is over; doing so shows the cast and the crew how much you appreciated their hard work and effort. « Stand and applaud if you really thought the show was great.

DeSoto Theatre History In 1928, O. C. Lam, the owner of Lam Amusement Company, laid plans to construct a new movie theater in downtown Rome, GA. Lam wanted to build a movie palace - a luxurious theater modeled after New York’s Roxy. Lam purchased a section of prime real estate on the main street of downtown Rome for $50,000. The building’s exterior and Georgian interior stylishly housed a number of recent movie palace innovations. Designed as a “talkie” theater, it was the first venue in the South to be designed and built for sound pictures. Rome’s new house boasted a Vitaphone sound system. And, the theater was heated and cooled by an innovative blower-fan air conditioning and tubular boiler system. Additionally, the theater was equipped with state-of-the-art fire safety equipment. Fitted with many exits, the theater could be emptied in two minutes. Lam named his new movie palace for Hernando DeSoto, who was thought by many historians to have passed through the area that is now Rome in 1540. The DeSoto was completed at a cost of $110,000 and opened in August of 1929. At that time, the theater seated over 1000 patrons, making it one of the seven largest movie venues in Georgia at the time. The theater was an instant success and the pride of Rome. The DeSoto was one of the main sources of entertainment for Northwest Georgia and Northeast Alabama for the next fifty years. In 1982, the DeSoto closed as a movie theater, but soon reopened as the venue for Rome’s local amateur theatre group, and continues to be a source of entertainment in downtown Rome. Rome Little Theatre has staged hundreds of performances in the 24 years it owned the DeSoto, and the theater is one of the venues for the annual Rome International Film Festival. Now seating 500 patrons, the DeSoto still retains its Art-Deco marquee, French mirrored entrance hall, and Georgian interior design. In 2006, Rome Little Theatre created the Historic DeSoto Theatre Foundation, in order to preserve and protect the building.

Message from the Director Thank you for coming to Rome Little Theatre’s production of Bleacher Bums! I grew up in the Midwest, where baseball ruled the summer. My heroes were George Brett, Ozzie Smith, and the Cub great Ryne Sandberg. Too often, I would come home after school in the fall or spring, throw my homework on the bed, and sit down to catch the Cubs play on WGN. I would watch the boys in blue play under “God’s own lights,” think about the smell of freshly cut grass, listen for the sound of wood striking leather, and smile. When the game was over, I would throw little pop flies over my bed and then safely make the diving catch for the last out, just like The Hawk, Andre Dawson, might do. Even though my mother was a dyed-in-the-wool Cardinals fan, she wasn’t able to keep me from my calling as a member of the Cubby faithful. I can remember vividly watching the Cubs win their division in 1984, and subsequently blow their shot at the World Series. I’ve seen them do it over and over again, (‘89, ‘98, ‘03, ‘07, ‘08) but, like the late Ron Santo, I’ve never given up faith that the next year would be THE year. So what? Why would anyone care about this exercise in futility all the way down here in Rome, Georgia? The answer: this play isn’t only about the Cubs. It’s really about the human experience.

It’s about the willingness to hope for the best in the face of futility, to believe in the possibility of the impossible. It’s about that moment we can all understand, when we look defeat in the eye, wipe the tears from our faces, and say “I still believe.” It’s about innocence lost, and found again. It’s about friends, family, and fanatical loyalty. It’s about a love for the game. It’s about baseball, and it’s about humanity. I think this cast has done a wonderful job of capturing this vision. The multitalented Chris Davidson has faithfully brought Wrigley Field to our stage, and Michael Scott’s sound design will have you feel like you are sitting in the middle of the field during a game. Producer Chuck Morris has worked tirelessly to keep us on point and working towards our goal. To everyone in the cast and crew, the RLT Board of Directors, the membership, and our loyal patrons, I say “thank you” from the bottom of my heart. My mother would often scold me after little league games, saying “Chris, you can’t hit the ball if you don’t swing the bat!” I think we took a big swing with this show, and I hope it’s a home run for you. Enjoy the show, and “Welcome to Wrigley Field!” P.S. This one’s for you, Mom.

Chris Parker

Sue Montgomery was a lifelong Cardinals fan. She enjoyed baseball tremendously. Having performed on stage in high school, Sue was also a patron of the theatre. Sue passed away this past April of cancer, and we wish to dedicate this production to her memory.

The Roster Tony Angio - Security Guard Tony was born and raised in Chicago, IL., so therefore Wrigley Field is a well known friend, as is Comiskey Park, the Cubs, the White Sox and the Bears. He has spent many an afternoon sitting in the bleachers at Wrigley Field cheering on the Cubs as they constantly fought so hard to win, an outcome that came only once in a blue moon. Although this is Tony's first acting experience, the environment and characters in this play are very familiar. He also served in the Army Reserves with Glenn Beckert and Don Kessinger, Cub players who were on the 1969 team that almost made it. In 1969, the Cubs were lovingly referred to as "the most celebrated second-place team in the history of baseball." Tony wishes to thank Chris for giving him this chance and his fellow actors who have given him a very enjoyable experience. John Barnett Vendor John has had a passion for baseball from childhood when his father coached his 8 and under team at Rome

Boys Club many years ago. John may have been type-cast for his role as “vendor in Bleacher Bums, having been seen in Concessions for all RLT and HDTF events/shows. John has been seen on stage in many shows since 2004, has served on Rome Little Theatre Board of Directors, and, most recently, as House Management Chairman. He would like to give a shout out to his wife (of 42 years), Kay, for her undying love and support, as well as, to all of his family for their support of him. Nicole, Todd, Anna, Nash, Rebekah (Beka), Brandon and Aaron have all served with him at Rome Little Theatre and the Barnett Family is honored to be volunteers of RLT. John now asks that you just sit back, relax, enjoy the show and let's all "Play Ball"! GO CUBBIES! Isaac Brackett - The Kid Isaac has appeared in fifteen other productions onstage at the Desoto, including roles in Scrooge: The Musical, Gypsy, Peter Pan, and Oliver Twist. He was a tap dancing Jitterbug in Wizard of Oz, young William Frankenstein in Frankenstein, and earlier this season, portrayed Joe Harper in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. Isaac will portray Pouncival in the upcoming Upstagers Theatre Company production of Cats. He has also performed in

The Roster a number of Sam Baltzer’s R.O.M.E. shows. Isaac is a member of the Spivey Children’s Choir at Clayton State University under the direction of Dr. Martha Shaw. He studies dance at the Dance Centre and plays soccer. You rarely see Isaac without one of the many hats from his hat collection! Chris Cole - Cheerleader This is Chris' 2nd appearance this season on stage at RLT, having just performed in Spamalot as a member of the ensemble. He also appeared in last season's performance of A Few Good Men. Chris first appeared on the RLT stage in 2007, in the musical Annie Get Your Gun. Chris has worked for the United States Postal Service for 25 years, and has also been affiliated with the Floyd Postal Credit Union and the Atlanta Postal Credit Union for a combined 18 years. First as a board member and then as a part time employee. Chris and his wife of 31 years, Diane, have two daughters and three grandchildren. His wife has shown extreme patience for the past several months, as he has been involved in two shows back to back, and she realizes that no matter how old he gets, he will not act his age! Chris also performs as "Jumpin" Jake Blues with the musical group "The Georgia Blues Brothers". The group formed in 2008, and since

then have performed all around the Southeast, headlining many festivals, 4th of July shows, and Rome's First Friday Concert Series. They have also performed as the opening act for the Swingin' Medallions, the Las Vegas act Bruce In The USA, and country star Jimmy Wayned. They are also slated to open for The Charlie Daniels Band later this fall. Chris would like to thank his wife for her support, and Chris Parker and Chuck Morris and the entire team that has worked so hard on this production. Growing up in Northern Illinois, Chris attended several Cubs games at Wrigley Field, and is excited about reliving some of his youth! Paul Culotta - Decker Until I moved to Georgia, I was a fanatical Seattle Mariners fan from their first game in 1977. So the Cubs-Cardinals rivalry in Bleacher Bums is very familiar, just like that between the Mariners and the rightfully despised New York Yankees. After moving here in 2008, of course I became an Atlanta Braves fan, although I still cheer like a fool when the Mariners beat the Yankees. On the acting side, I have been portraying villains and unlikable characters since Babes in Toyland in 2009. So acting the role of Decker, a true good guy (although a bit vulgar at times), was a stretch. So

The Roster was having to learn well over 200 lines! Finally, we discovered that there is no intermission in this play, just like a baseball game, so we cast members had to soldier on for nine straight innings of fun, fun baseball. Huge thank-yous go to Chuck Morris, our tireless producer, Chris Davidson, our talented set designer, and Chris Parker, our director. Chris had a great vision for the play and directed with encouragement and superb suggestions, so that each cast member could overcome all challenges and do his/her very best. Finally, big thankyous go to my four cats and my wife, Shari, who put up with my countless hours of taking over the cats’ back porch to learn all those lines! So now enjoy the game! Play ball! Play ball! Brian Hales - Herb Zikowski "Zig" Brian's first productions since moving from Texas were RLT's production of A Christmas Carol and, Spamalot in which he played Scrooge and King Arthur, respectively. Brian wanted to relate that his father was a great baseball fan. That his Springs and Summers with his dad always included playing catch from the time his dad got home to dinnertime. Though always pooped after a long days work, there was time for hitting Brian some grounders or throwing a ball sky high, so high they looked as though they went out of sight, and

when he caught one on reentry he was very, very proud. As a direct result Brian can add to his bio that he was all star 1st baseman for the Betty Jane Elementary School Giants (last place), and all-star first baseman for the Orangewood Elementary School White Sox, (first place 3 years in a row). No autographs please! Brian's dad passed last July and so in some way this production is a homage to those, like Brian, who listened to the games on the car radio with dad on warm summer nights at the drive in diner. Or watched the home team over soda pop and hot dogs. Play Ball!! Jim Hellriegel - Ensemble Jim is back on stage after working back stage over the past year. Jim appeared in The Man Who Came to Dinner and A Few Good Men and has worked backstage on more shows than can be listed. Jim was brought to Rome Little Theatre by his wife, Tracy, to see Twelve Angry Men several years ago. Although he said there would be Thirteen Angry Men, he came to the show with his wife and loved it. Since that time, Jim has continued to frequent the theater and has become a valuable asset for set build, back stage crew, strike, special events and for occasional onstage appearances. Jim is an employee of Southeastern Mills and has been a resident of Rome for 37 years.

The Roster Michael Hillman - Greg Michael is extremely honored and excited to be part of this fantastic cast. Michael is an English teacher at Calhoun City High School. He has been involved in theater for about 12 years and has been in several productions at RLT, including the role of Alan in Play it Again, Sam, Renfield in Dracula, and Tom in The Glass Menagerie. Prior to being involved at RLT, Michael was in several plays in Calhoun Little Theater, including the role of Tony in Dial M for Murder and Meyers in Witness for the Prosecution. Michael is so excited about being in this baseball-related theatrical venture that he is currently looking for other sports-centered plays to do. For example, if anyone knows of a play set in the world of curling, he would love to know about it. Michael would like to thank Lauren and his family for their love and support. Jim Hunter The Announcer Bleacher Bums is Jim's second Rome Little Theater production. His very first time on stage was as Major Markinson in the successful

2014 drama - A Few Good Men, which earned Jim a Roman nomination for Best Showstopper. Jim's only other gig in show business was as an extra in the blockbuster movie - The Firm. Jim is excited about landing a role where he is only heard and not seen. He gives thanks to his Dad for passing down his "radio voice." Lauren Jones - Melody King Lauren returns to the DeSoto stage after recently dancing and singing in Spamalot. Throughout her six-year career at Rome Little Theatre, she’s acted in six shows and assistant directed three. For her 9 to 5, Lauren is the Marketing Director for the Rome-Floyd Parks and Recreation Authority. She would like to thank her family for their support, Michael for doing this with her all over again, Eliot for helping her with the Bleacher Bums trailer, and Chris for giving her the teeniest inkling of what it’s like to be a Cubs fan. Lauren would like to thank her father, specifically, for talking about John Smoltz so much that one time he took her to a Braves game, ensuring that among baseball fans, she can drop his name and then nod and agree with everything else that is said thereafter. Lauren bats right and catches on accident.

The Roster Billy Leffler - Ensemble Billy is a junior at Coosa High School. When not competing on the wrestling mat, he can be seen in the stands at other sporting events cheering on the Eagles, often times sporting black and white body paint. This is Billy's second production on the DeSoto stage, appearing previously in Coosa High School's production of The Rules of Comedy. Betsy Mitchell - Ensemble Betsy is a local Realtor with Keller Williams Realty. She is a graduate of Georgia State University with a major in English Literature and a minor in film and video production. This is her first production with Rome Little Theatre. She has worked on numerous film and television productions as a stand-in/photo double and as background talent. She also appeared in The Walking Dead as a featured "W" Walker. She is currently pursuing a career in acting alongside her career in real estate and is happy to be a part of the amazing cast and crew of Bleacher Bums!

Chuck Morris - Producer Chuck is a partner at the law firm of Parker and Lundy, and serves as an Associate Juvenile Court Judge for Polk and Haralson Counties. Chuck is president of Rome Little Theatre, cofounder of the Cedartown Theatrical Performers’ Company, and serves on the Board of Directors for the Cedartown Civic Arts Commission and the Historic DeSoto Theatre Foundation. Chuck received his bachelor’s degree in Theatre Arts and Speech from the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee, and worked as a touring actor with several regional children’s theaters after graduation. Since he began his legal career, Chuck has directed or produced over a dozen community theater productions. Robert Moulard - Marvin (Well, here he is again, and audition committee confidentiality rules being what they are, we will probably never know whom to hold responsible. We urge you to remember this is community theater and we must make do with the resources we have. So, in a spirit of Christian forbearance and forgiveness let us put Mr. Moulard's bio behind us so we can watch this otherwise quite funny play, and get on with our lives. --The Board.) So far, in this, his eighth season at RLT, Mr Moulard has managed to avoid prosecution. In a somewhat-snippierthan-it-needed-to-be review, a

The Roster spokesman for the Floyd County prosecutor's office said, "While Mr. Moulard's perpetration of Emil Drosselmeyer in The Nutcracker last year at the Auditorium was artistically fraudulent and aesthetically reprehensible, but he did keep his pants on, and did not violate any felony statute we could find in the Georgia Code, annotated. My kids loved his Christmas Polar Express show, though." Mr. Moulard is a graduate of the Schola Cantorum Dysmelodia in Pavo and is musical and artistis director of his world-ignored troupe of eating and sleeping felines, The Cats of Thousands. Stinky and Petey say "howdy" and remind you that if you're having half as much fun watching Mr. Moulard perform as he's having performing for you, then he's having twice as much fun as you. Carol Murchland - Ensemble Carol is thrilled to be a part of Bleacher Bums. She is a lifelong baseball fan and this show has taken her back to her childhood. She remembers as a young girl watching the Saturday game of the week, usually the New York Yankees, on a black and white TV. She had a glove and ball instead of dolls. She remembers as she got older tirelessly playing catch with her neighbor. One of her fondest memories is being at the first Atlanta Braves vs. the Pittsburgh Pirates game on April 13, 1966. That was the begin-

ning of many trips to the ballpark. Through the years, she has visited many ballparks all over the country. Along the way, she became a Cubs fan watching games on WGN. Bleacher Bums has been a nostalgic trip that has brought back a flood of wonderful memories of great times at the ball game. She wishes to thank Chris Parker and Chuck Morris for giving her this special opportunity to be a part of such a sweet journey. So, let this show take you to a wildly entertaining game at Wrigley Field. Play ball and Go Cubbies!!! Chris Parker Bats: Right Throws: Right Position: Director Chris studied theatre at Berry College, and currently teaches English at Coosa High School. This is Chris's first outing as a director at RLT. He was previously the assistant director for The Best Christmas Pageant Ever. This year, he directed Coosa High School's The Rules of Comedy.

The Roster Chris's recent on-stage experience includes Faith Healer with the Ad Hoc Theatre Company, and the role of Colonel Jessup in RLT's A Few Good Men. Chris is a die-hard Chicago Cubs fan. His mother Sue Montgomery was a life-time St. Louis Cardinals fan, and she and Chris spent many memorable hours together teasing each other while watching the Cubs and Cardinals play. The friendly rivalry they shared over these two teams captured what is best about baseball and the fan experience. Sue passed away this April. It is with great love that Chris wishes to dedicate this show to Sue's memory. Jeff Ward - Ensemble/ Greg Understudy Jeff is thrilled to be a part of the Bleacher Bums cast. This is his second production at RLT, his first was A Few Good Men last year. Jeff is excited to be reunited with so many of the wonderful cast and crew from A Few Good Men, which was a major reason he auditioned. Jeff hopes you have as much fun watching the show as he had being in it. Todd Williams - Assistant Director Todd is the husband of Nicole Williams. They have two children, Anna and Nash. When not on stage,

he enjoys playing golf and tennis. Todd also enjoys hanging out with friends and playing games or doing a little karaoke. He was in drama club in high school where he played the lead role in Sganarelle. He played the Tin Man in The Wizard of Oz and Bob Bradley in The Best Christmas Pageant Ever. He was also in Grease, Legally Blonde the Musical, Experience Christmas and The Rocky Horror Show. He will be serving on the Board of Directors next season. Erika Wilson - Rose This is Erika's first performance with Rome Little Theater, but she has been involved in community theater off and on since junior high school. Some of her favorite roles have been: Myra Bruhl in Deathtrap, Judy in Perfect Wedding, Jo Beth in Seeing Stars in Dixie, and Berthe in Boeing Boeing. Erika is married to Craig Wilson and is a stayat-home mom to three boys, Patrick, Simon, and Elliot.

The Roster James Woodall - Richie James is a safety director for Total Logistics located here in beautiful Rome. He also works part time at Rome Respiratory. He is a father of two beautiful 11 month old twin girls, Maggie and Jayden. James has been married almost 5 years to Ashley Woodall. During his time off he loves to go camping, fishing and spending time with his family. This is James’ first theater performance ever and is glad Chris Parker allowed him the chance to perform with a great cast to guide and teach him. This hopefully will not be his last performance!
