August 9 is Women’s Day August is Women’s month.

We may ask ourselves how relevant this is. After all, we have an extremely progressive constitution guaranteeing the rights of us all and even specifying certain areas.

It is difficult to talk Women’s Month without having the input from some remarkable women. We have highlighted it all by the story of Poppie Nongema and an interview with our own Sybil.

That is where we put in a discussion of where it all came from and the background. Without that, we might end up with a ‘Mother’s Day’ instead. A Mother’s Day that is full of well-wishes but has no teeth.

Women’s Day is coming from a background of struggle and we decide how much ‘teeth’ we want it to have.

That, we believe, can only propel our society forward although it might be painful.

Women’s Day Women’s Day is having a long history. It is not just something new that came around after UN recognised Women’s day in 1977.

It is something very different from Mother’s day. Mother’s Day has many good intentions. There we are looking at saying ‘thank you’ to the mothers across the globe that brought up the nations.

Mother’s Day has no sharp edge, but Women’s Day has.

What time frame are we talking about? And what were the issues?

We look at the 1900s. Sure enough, women in general (across the globe really) did not have the right to vote, could not own property or sign business deals, could not enrol at university, could not …. A plethora of things.

So what changed? The industrial revolution which required a lot more industrial workers. Women got out of the house and into the factories.

As more women got to be bread-winners and acting in their own right (not just a companion to a husband), the demand for recognition was sharpened.

1909 saw the first ‘Women’s Day’ (USA) and it was soon followed with the International Women’s day - from 1910 and onwards.

First World War saw the entire established order of ‘society’ being turned upside down.

Social changes were demanded and equality was on the agenda. The first major obstacle (and victory) was the right to vote.

Society again changed after Second World war. Women were suddenly to be found as soldiers or factory workers or business owners and in essence; as individuals in their own right. And the rights to go with it were indeed demanded now.

The laws of the countries changed (by and large). Equality as we see it is enshrined in the constitutions around the world.

But we can ask ourselves: is it enough?

The theme for Women’s Day according to UN is “Generation Equality”.

It does point out that equality is not achieved in all countries. There are still pockets of oppression.

South Africa’s constitution guarantees an equal society. However, one thing is the law another is culture and tradition. And that is where we as South Africa should now look.

Do we still see a male-dominated environment? Do we still see malejobs and female-jobs? Do we see differences in salaries based on gender? Do we see gender-violence?

This is where attitudes in society must change to reflect the intentions of law. … and that is why Women’s Day is still relevant!

Science is great: Science is wonderful. This month we look at ‘meat’. Should we re-define what ‘meat’ is? Why have animals around if we can grow ‘meat’ via science? Or avoid ‘meat’ in meat altogether?

Cultured meat: We can also call it ‘non-slaughter meat’.

Let us recap a few things: not all people are in favour of killing animals for eating purposes. However, not all would like to be vegetarians.

Imagine we take a collection of cells from a cow (the fillet is a good example) and grow the cells via the usual means we now have available. This is also called ‘Tissue Engineering’.

The living cells are kept in an environment where the right amount of cell nutrients, Ph, temperature and other factors are controlled. Techniques such as self-replicating are used to create an exact copy of the cells. That is the new ‘fillet in a bottle’.

Are such things done? Yes. It is possible to ‘grow’ a new heart valve, new veins, skin grafts and a lot of other things. That is not really a problem.

By and large, the engineering aspect for medical purposes is solved. We can do all of these things, but not at an industrial scale.

Can we grow say two pounds of fillet for the Sunday joint? That is where the problem comes in.

: Meat-free meat The current stage is that what can be grown is more like mince. It is not anything like any of the cuts of meat we expect.

Reason? It is not just the strands of ‘meat’ that form a T-Bone steak. It is the amount of oxygen in it, the blood vessels, the fats, the … and all of that must be grown and ‘shaped’?. We can’t do it today.

So, we have some mince thing. A ‘burger patty’ was grown in 2013 (after two years of development). The cost was $300,000. It is expected that the cost might come down to $9. A far cry from average price of $1 as it is now.

Taste? It does not taste lekker at all (according to some who tried it). And it is like eating a rubber hose.

Women in Agriculture: Neo Leburu We continue with the theme of remarkable women. This time we look at a tough and difficult job: farming.

When they say ‘future is female’, there are actually women leading the forefront and making ‘present is female’ in various industries. Neo Leburu is taking the agricultural sector by storm by quitting her day job to fully farm with goats.

She fell in love with goats when a doe (female goat) and two kids (literally the kids of the goat), were gifted to her mother. Since then she has never looked back and has chosen her love for goats over a job in the big city Johannesburg.

By profession, she is a qualified sound engineer with a diploma in administration. Even though she had the job, her love for farming was calling her back to her rural home in Ganyesa near Vryburg in the North West.

Leburu is an advocate for women, and she is keen on sharing information with others. “I do not have much but there are a lot of equally passionate young women out there whom I interact with on Facebook and they show a lot of interest in farming. They engage on the subject.

I am here for them and one day I will take many of them under my wings and empower them in all possible ways� Leburu said.

One of the other reasons why Neo Leburu is farming with goats is because the goat industry is thriving. As she puts it, she is happy at how her goats have multiplied over the years and continue to as she strives to get to that stage of a thriving goat farm.

Her intention and vision is to grow into a stud breeder dealing with specifically Boer Goats while at the same time selling the meat and other goat products.

However, she acknowledge that there are challenges with farming.

The cash flow is very important. In fact, she is running a takeaway and delivery food business to sustain her farm. Despite these challenges, Leburu affirms that she finds joy and self-fulfilment in the Kraal.

With this, her love for farming is expected to multiply and have a ripple effect on others as she not only aims to inspire, but to being an employer.

What is NSFAS?

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) is a government entity under the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET)

What does NSFAS do?

Supports access to and success in, higher education and training for students from poor and working-class families who would otherwise not be able to afford the cost of studies at a public university or Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) college.

How to elect a president Let us just recap a few facts. The US system is the one which came about by seriously thinking about ‘governance’. It was strongly influenced by all the thinkers of US and Europe, basing their deliberations on fairness and inclusive government.

Look at it: The UK system (which is the model for a lot of countries – also SA) came from ‘horse trading’ between the barons and King John – 1215, Magna Carta. Although refined over centuries, it can be said not to be coming from ‘democracy’.

US is different. We have the executive – that is the president. We get back to that. Then the legislative, consisting of lower chamber – House of representatives – and then the senate.

House of representatives consists of 435 members, each representing a voting district. Districts are determined according to population census to give some equal measure of number of people per district.

It means that to be elected one has to campaign in the district and win real ‘grass root’ support.

Senate consists of 100 members, two from each state, elected by a state-wide vote.

Note the first thing: the voice of say Alaska is equal to the voice of California in the senate. It gives smaller state a larger influence beyond their population numbers. It is deliberate for not drowning out minority states.

Presidential elections are of course different again.

Each state has an electoral college with a set number of members. When voting for a president in a state, the state’s entire members of the college will then vote for the candidate with the most votes in that state.

So where is this electoral college coming from? It is again an invention to ensure that even smaller states with few citizens can impact the election of the president.

Electoral college has 538 members. Each member is obliged to vote according to the majority vote for a candidate in that specific state.

Although California (44 million) is by far the most populous state, it has 55 college members. Alaska with a population comparable to Bloemfontein has 3 members.

It forces any candidate to campaign in all states to win enough college members. It is not enough to win in just say three states and ignore the rest.

A lot of thought went into it!

Is it a fair system?

Let us look at the very first thing: A candidate is favoured by a vast and huge majority in a few populous states. The candidate is not favoured in a range of smaller less-populous states. Can the number of electoral college votes outweigh the majority population vote?

Yes it can. And it is indeed happening. That is why the US lists the presidential vote (electoral college) and the popular vote. George W. Bush won the election in 2000, but not the popular vote. Trump did not win the popular vote in 2016.

Do we see huge discrepancies? Not really.

But it is of course something worth debating.

However, the intention was exactly to force a candidate to campaign throughout the country and not just focus on say, California, New York, Texas and Florida. Those 4 states alone count for about one-third of the entire US population.

The issue has been growing as we see the urbanisation where more people are moving to cities and leaving rural states. That means that what was a reasonable spread of people across all states is not there

anymore. The four states above have grown disproportionally bigger.

Is it a real problem? It is surely something that a dynamic democracy will debate.

If the House of Representatives really reflect the will of the people at a grass-root level, why have the Senate?

The senate was a compromise. It is intended to create a less partisan environment, catering for more balanced views and debates. More like the House of Lords in the UK. The creation of the senate was also supposed to introduce a bit of checks and balances. The popular sentiments in the House could be balanced by the states wishes.

Does it work? It does introduce a ‘second thought’ into the legislative efforts. As anything in a democracy: it is worth debating!

How to write music in the future (if we even want to?)

For a very long time I have never seen the importance of learning the theory of music or sheet music. Sheet music as in having written it all down with all those symbols on five-line paper. I realise that for others to play a song, exactly as the composer (like me) did the first time, it is needed to write it down in a way that anybody can access. That is sheet music.

However, that is not the way I and other hip-hop artists work! I am a self-taught artist and what I have learned this far is I can do it without the rules.

The thing is: how will another person be able to play my music without knowing? Without having written it down, it must be by listening. But then it will never be the same as the next person will ‘interpret’ my music.

Putting their own twist on it.

The discussion for next time can be whether that is good or bad.

My normal routine of writing is simple: I listen to the beat I have designed, I come up with a concept for the song, then I start writing and while I write I will be refining the melody and tune for the song and when I am done I jump in the booth and start recording.

Next step is for the sound engineers, taking care of the mixing and mastering of the song.

Can it be written down?

Maybe, but traditional notation does not lend itself to the instruments we use (guitar, synthesizers, etc).

New ways of notations are graphic representations. It is all based on software now.

Though one of my dreams is to perform with an orchestra, it puts me in a position where I really feel I need to know how to read and write sheet music and to also have a better understanding of the process.

Maybe that can be fulfilled by the cooperation between myself and one who is classically trained. Then the orchestra part is sheet music and my part is graphic representations?

That way my music can be conserved and will never go away and others can perform my music hundred years from now. Learning this skill is not a bad idea at all. Though I don’t like the rules behind it I still have a lot of respect for musicians who have acquired this skill.

I am 26 year old and the owner and founder of Boi Boi Apparel.

My little brother and I lost our mother when we were very young and we were raised by our aunts and uncles. Growing up without our mother was very tough on me but I think it has made me a stronger person.

I have always had the passion for drawing, music and dancing and from young I decided to find information about where I could get a school that would offer me the best education when it came to the arts.

Fortune smiled at me. After I completed matric I went on to study textile and fine arts at the TUT arts campus in Pretoria. This has equipped me with the skills that I have today, not just art but also the business aspect of it all.

I established Boi Boi Apparel during my 1st year in varsity simply because I used to make clothing myself. That has always created a lot of demand amongst my peers and now it also helped me with extra cash.

My current offerings are print, textile and interior design services and I also have a non-profit organization that focuses on providing skills and training to kids in the townships.

Since I started the business I have worked with so many artists who are using my brand such as Ayanda Dawetu (cumani from scandal), Driemandskaap, DJ Juicy and Lezy De Yong just to name a few.

A piece of advice that I have for young people who also wish to start their own business is to be passionate about it and also be patient.

Starting a business and running it is very demanding. It is 24/7 and no leisure time. But it is so fulfilling to be your own boss. Therefore: go to school and get equipped with the necessary skills to be an entrepreneur if that is your dream.
