Essential Experience Hands-on experience is a cornerstone of the Rollins MAT – Secondary Education program. Before student teaching begins, students complete two discipline-specific pre-internships—one 50-hour middle-school placement and one high-school 50-hour placement. This dual experience builds confidence across grade levels 6-12 and helps students identify the environment that best fits their teaching goals before committing to a full-semester placement. Throughout the internships and student teaching experience, students are supported by a robust network of mentors. Rollins’ director of field supervision partners with local school districts to secure strong placements, while on-site teachers offer day-to-day classroom guidance and deep disciplinary knowledge. Each candidate is also paired with a Rollins faculty mentor in their content area, who observes, provides feedback, and helps chart next steps across all three field experiences.
