Academic Internship Program The Academic Internship Program (AIP) promotes career development and self-awareness by integrating academic learning with applied workplace experience. By participating in Rollins' AIP, students can earn course credit while exploring various career fields as an intern for a professional organization. The academic assignments are specifically designed to enhance the learning experience through in-depth reflection and critical analysis of the work environment. Each semester, students report that by engaging in this practical experience, the internship has help clarify their career goals, and has enhanced their academic, personal, and professional development.

Register now for the Spring 2014 Internship course All A&S, CPS, and Hamilton Holt students can now register for a spring 2014 academic internship via FOXLINK by clicking on “Academic Internship Registration Form” in the left-hand column under the appropriate student tab.

Registration Deadline: Wednesday, January 15, 2014 by 5:00pm.

Excerpts from Summer 2013 Intern Journals What has been most enjoyable about your job?

Nicole Franco, Christian Help

“One of the things that I most enjoy about my internship (Christian Help) is that I am able to fearlessly throw my ideas to the table. It makes me feel as though my opinion is considered during the projects that are taking place. Since I have experience with e-commerce, my main focus has been on the jewelry e-commerce business at Christian Help. Recently, I had the opportunity to join another member of the jewelry project on a ‘mini’ shopping spree for jewelry making supplies at a local supply shop. Not only was I able to pick out supplies of my choice, but I was allowed to freely design pieces. I received positive feedback upon showing my samples to the women part of the jewelry project and other employees at Christian HELP.” - Nicole Franco, Holt Class of 2014, Christian HELP in Casselberry, FL

How have your academic experiences helped with your internship?

“My time at Where Orlando has greatly influenced my perception of my classes at Rollins and has helped me narrow down a possible career field. It was my first opportunity to put into practice the things that I had learned in my Critical Media/ Cultural Studies classes, like advertising techniques and demographics. It makes me look forward to classes I will take in the future as I now can picture how the things I learn will apply to the real world. I have developed skills in social media and promotion by creating posts and updates for the company’s Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram pages. This improved my writing skills immensely by pushing me to find enticing ways of promoting local events or the magazine as whole.”

What Challenges do you expect from your internship?

“This summer, I anticipate being challenged as a writer and journalist. I predict that the coming weeks will be consistently busy and filled with more time constraints. My learning objectives include growing as a writer through exposure to various beats and styles of writing: real estate, tourism, health care, technology, and economic development. Furthermore, I will learn the editorial process of newspaper publishing by attending monthly staff meetings and weekly news department meetings. Above all, I will gain publication experience by meeting deadlines within a fastpaced newsroom and receiving professional feedback from knowledgeable journalists.”

Tip of the Week This fall semester, the internship reflection course began a new initiative to help students make the most of this valuable learning experience. With the ‘Tip of the Week’, students receive a weekly blog posting with helpful suggestions on how to expand their understanding of the world of work, and apply these tips during their internship. Lessons learned from my Summer 2013 Internship Interview with Taylor Wejkszner, Class of 2015 Internship Site: Lehigh Valley Health Network Location: Allentown, PA Q: What is the name and location of your internship site?

A: I was chosen as a Research Scholar in the Department of Gynecology at Lehigh Valley Health Network in Allentown, Pennsylvania.

Q: What is your major and how did this internship relate to it?

A: I am a biochemistry major with a minor in Spanish. During my internship, I was exposed to every aspect of the healthcare field. I assisted with surgeries, completed rounds on the hospital floor, and also was involved with completing research project that is in the process of being published in The Journal of Minimally Invasive Surgery.

Q: What exactly does this company/place do?

A: Lehigh Valley Health Network includes 3 hospitals in Allentown and Bethlehem PA. The mission of the hospital is to heal, comfort, and care for the people of the community. Today, the hospital offers 95 clinical specialties as well as opportunities for clinical research and education, including a medical school partnership with the University of South Florida.

Q: What were your personal responsibilities as an intern?

A: As an intern, I was expected to take on the role as a medical student completing their residency in the Department of Gynecology. My mentor, Dr. Martino specialized in minimally invasive gynecologic surgery. In simpler turns, he used a DaVinci robot to perform procedures, instead of the traditional surgical procedures. I was also responsible for compiling data, running data analysis and meeting with different departments to see how we can "better" the hospital.

Q: What did you learn and/or find enjoyable?

A: I am truly blessed to have had such an eye-opening experience that exposed me directly to the medical field. One of the biggest aspects I learned about myself is how much I enjoy research. Though it can be tedious, the end project is worthwhile and is helpful to other professionals in the medical field.

Also, being exposed to the new technology such as the DaVinci Robot was definitely a huge advantage of interning in the Gynecology Department. I have no doubt that this new technology is going to revolutionize the way in which procedures are performed in the medical industry.

Competitive Internships for the Summer 2014 Do you have plans for Summer 2014? How about doing a summer internship? Below are a few highly competitive Summer Internship programs:

SCIENCES, BUSINESS, AND ENGINEERING (BIOLOGY, CHEMISTRY, COMPUTER SCIENCE, MATHEMATICS, ECONOMICS, ETC.) BP American Internship Program Work on real world projects, learn about the industry and see how BP is meeting the world’s growing energy needs.

The paid summer internship program is looking for students in engineering, science, and business majors, which lasts anytime from 8-12 weeks. BP also has co-op programs, which typically occur during the academic year, may run longer. If you are not sure whether your major is accept by BP, please visit Degree matcher.

Deadline: February 3, 2014 Bain & Co Summer Associate and Associate Consultant Internship Bain's Associate Consultant Intern (ACI) program is ideal for top-performing undergraduate students (typically between their third and fourth year), and for master's candidates considering a management consulting career after graduation.

Deadline: December 13, 2013 Google Internships Google offers a variety of internship opportunities in different locations specialized in technical support and product management.

SCIENCES (BIOLOGY, BIOCHEMISTRY, ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES, MARINE BIOLOGY, PHYSICS, COMPUTER AND SOCIAL SCIENCE) NOAA-NGI Internship Program. (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) Internships with NOAA provide career exploration in a variety of fields studied by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and Northern Gulf Institute (NGI) scientists including coastal science, fisheries management, climate change, ecosystem management, engineering and socioeconomic data analysis.

Deadline: March 14, 2014

Summer Internship at the National Institutes of Health in Maryland Summer programs at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) provide an opportunity to spend a summer working at the NIH side-by-side with some of the leading scientists in the world, in an environment devoted exclusively to biomedical research. Internships cover a minimum of eight weeks.

Research Experiences at Mote Marine Laboratory in Florida Since 2003, Mote Marine Laboratory has been a host site for the National Science Foundation's Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Program. The Mote REU Program offers paid research training experiences in estuarine science to 10 undergraduate students during a 10-week period between late May and early August.

VARIOUS MAJORS (NOT SPECIFIED IN THE REQUIREMENT) Governor Internships Program The Governor’s Internship Program provides a unique opportunity for Florida’s brightest students to gain valuable professional experience while helping make Florida the greatest state in the nation to live, work and play. Interns will gain an understanding of the inner-workings of state government and have one-of-a-kind opportunities to interact with elected and appointed officials, government agencies and the media.

Florida Attorney General Internships The Attorney General serves as the attorney for the State of Florida and as a member of the Florida.

Working for the Office of the Attorney General affords undergraduate and law students an opportunity to gain practical experience in a legal, law enforcement, criminal justice, victim services, or technology field and offers students a chance to perform meaningful work toward the completion of their degree.

Pre-Med Shadowing Program Again this Winter Intersession, the Health Professions Advising Program has partnered with Florida Hospital, and now Nemours Children’s Hospital to offer pre-med shadowing opportunities for Rollins students. With the addition of pediatric medicine, this year’s shadowing program had a highly competitive applicant pool, making the selection extremely difficult. To this end, from January 6- 10, 2014 the following six pre-med students have been selected to observe physicians and residents within the Residency Training Programs at Florida Hospital and Nemours Children's Hospital: Megan Single – Pediatric Orthopedic Surgery, Nemours Children’s Hospital Ibrahim Musri – General Surgery, Florida Hospital Cristina Figueroa – General Surgery, Florida Hospital Catherine Psarakis – Emergency Medicine, Florida Hospital Jayce Breig – Emergency Medicine, Florida Hospital Jamie Wadovick – Emergency Medicine, Florida Hospital
