Annual General Meeting
The Volkstanzfest is held every two years in different cities around Australia. Over the Easter weekend 4 & 5 April, numerous German, Austrian and Swiss dancing and folklore groups from across the nation came together to dance and enjoy fellowship. Adelaide’s Bavarian dancers, the ‘Bund der Bayern’ hosted the event at the Adelaide German Club and in Hahndorf. The Bavarian dancers worked hard to organise the event and make arrangements for 14 dance groups, including 3 visiting groups from Bavaria (over 300 individual participants!), who came together to share experiences and learn different techniques to ensure that
the German-Austrian-Swiss traditions in Australia remain alive and well. ‘Die Brücke’, the National Council of German Speaking Clubs in Australia and New Zealand, was the main sponsor, with many others offering support for the event. Our own Folk Dance Group Alpenrose was the only Swiss group to participate. Sylvia Hochuli, the leader of the group: “we felt privileged to be so warmly embraced by all the Austrian and German groups.” “It was a very busy time for all participants. The Saturday morning bus trip to Hahndorf in our beautiful Tracht will always be remembered fondly. The Alphorns and singing saw was of great
interest and entertainment for the many tourists.” “Our beautiful Swiss costumes and smiles will be shown all over the world with all the photos that were taken. The colourful costumes and dances from different countries and regions showed the diversity and commonalities of our cultural heritage. It was particularly interesting to watch the younger generation performing ‘Schuhplattler’ in a modern style.” “Our sincere thank-you to the ‘Bund der Bayern’ and all involved, especially Reinhard. We had a fantastic weekend!” The Volkstanzfest 2017 will be held at the ‘Harmonie German Club’ in Canberra.
