For a start, the old lady is 154 years old, making her one of the oldest surviving artifacts, dating back to the early years of Swiss migration to Australia . It is not just the age that is special, but also the elaborate embellishments. ‘Die Schweizer in Melbourne’, together with the year 1859 and a lovely flower arrangement, have been embroidered, and the crests of 22 cantons surrounding the Swiss Cross have been painted on. Chris Hostettler, the President of the Swiss Yodel Choir Matterhorn, contacted Swiss Society President Franz Schnellmann, and Franz in turn consulted with Barbara Kündig, President of the Swiss Club. It did not take much convincing and it was

soon agreed that the Swiss Society, as the oldest Swiss organisation in Australia, would become the new owner, and the Swiss Club Restaurant a most worthy location for the flag to be on permanent display. Continued on page 7
