That’s how we celebrated Swiss National Day! As in years past, the eight large flagpoles alongside St.Kilda Road, between Flinders Street Station and Federation Square, proudly flew the white cross on red background signaling Switzerland’s 721st birthday. At sunset, families started to assemble at the usual spot and I wondered if we’d get as many people as last year, because the weather looked rather doubtful. There was no cause to worry, soon there was a large crowd of mums and dads and their children all getting their lampions ready. There were even some new faces which was great to see. The sound of Gerd Schwärzler’s drum got everyone up in line and off we went. It must have been quite a spectacle for bystanders watching this noisy procession of people with bells, waving flags and carrying lampions of many shapes and
sizes, making its way slowly along the Yarra River towards the MCG. Many, I’m sure, were wondering what football team this crowd was barracking for. Thankfully, the rain was holding off and we arrived at the Club in dry condition. The children and parents headed upstairs to the 2nd floor, where some yummy food was awaiting. Continued on page 5
